3 Idiots Record: Which film can break it?

3 Idiots released during Christmas 2009 and broke every possible record that existed back then. The film did about Rs 80 crores in Week 1 and the word-of-mouth was so good that it more than tripled its first weekend collections!

3 Idiots was a rare combination of the biggest actor in the country (Aamir Khan) paired with one of the most popular female stars (Kareena Kapoor) and in-arguably the most commercially successful director of the last decade (Rajkumar Hirani). A director who connects with both the masses and the urban audiences.

And like pointed out by one of our readers in the comments section, it requires a real special film to break the lifetime records set by 3 Idiots.

So which amongst the upcoming films are capable of beating the Rs 200 crores record set by 3 Idiots? Here are 5 films that we think, might pose a threat.

Note – we assume the all the films below will be liked, because otherwise there is absolutely no chance of coming close to 3 Idiots.

  • Bodyguard – Going by the trailer that has just released, Salman Khan has yet another box office monster. A sure-shot blockbuster unless something goes terribly wrong. It has Kareena  who commands a strong fan-following of her own. Director Siddique has experience on his side, but has never directed a Hindi film before. Chances of Bodyguard beating 3 Idiots – 40%.
  • Ra One – Shahrukh Khan’s dream project and be rest assured, the superstar will be going all out to promote it. It releases during the 5 day Diwali weekend and is likely to beat the opening week record currently held by Dabangg (80.5 crores). But for it to beat the 3 Idiots record, it has to be exceptionally good.  Chances of going past the 200 crore mark – 70%.
  • Don 2 – Going by the lifetime collections of Don 1, the sequel is unlikely to come close to 3 Idiots. Even at its best, this SRK – Priyanka starrer will fall well below the 150 crore mark. The only reason we have included Don 2 is because it releases without any major competition during the Christmas weekend. Chances of beating 3 Idiots – 35%.
  • Krrish 3 – Some of territories have already been sold to distributors, which clearly shows that the superhero film has massive demand already. Rakesh Roshan is one of the most successful commercial directors ever and him teaming up with his superstar son after 6 long years ensures a earth-shattering initial. If good, Krrish 3 has great chances of going past 3 Idiots since it most likely will release in 2013 – 80%
  • Dhoom 3 – Aamir Khan in a Dhoom film. Enough said. It all comes down to  Vijay Krishna Acharya though, who last directed the disastrous Tashan. But when Aamir is there, All izz always well!  And yes, releases during Christmas 2012. Chances  of beating 3 Idiots – 95%.

What do you think? Any other film that can break the 200 crore record? Tell us, below in the comments section.

  • @sonam: Ok i might agree with you to some extent but then how Ghajini became a record breaker if not because of Aamir, can u explain plz?
It was the frist film in history of indian cinema to cross 100cr nett plz don’t tell me that was because of the great direction of R.Mugadoss, Ghajini didn’t fall it continued good ran furing 3 weeks, and opened extremely well of course not only because it was during christmas or because of the recent PR. The first and biggest thing which helped Aamir, was reaching out to audience and connecting with them one on one, through his blog or live chats. Later on, he also started meeting his fans in person, more often. People were delighted to connect with him, and interacting with him even dispelled some of their misconceptions about him (created by certain sections of the media).
Ghajini showed him in a completely different light. And after a decade, people were seeing Aamir in a full-on heroic avatar, doing this mass entertainer. It was something which no one expected from him. So it didn’t just open well, but also did well. Marketing and hype is an added bonus without a doubt.
3 Idiots is an another case, yes Aamir helped to the earth chattering opening, but Aamir should also be credited, in fact SRK rejected it. The Munnabhai series were equally good films(if not better), but why do you think they didn’t succeed the way 3 Idiots did? I mean no one expected a film about education system to break all records right?
Aamir should be credited for choosing that kind of cinema and conbining commercial cinema with masala and entertainment to give path breaking films to the audience. But i agree that Raju H should becredited the most no doubt. But Ghajini it’s all Aamir film no doubt about it.

  • And who told you Dhoom 3 can’t break 3 Idiots record, it’s releasing in Christmas, with Aamir as lead, it’s the 3rd film of Dhoom series, did you forget how the trashy Dhoom 2 was a big hit and a record breaker despite being a crappy one. Dhoom 3 will break some records no doubt, but if it’s good and people loved it believe me 3 Idiots record will be like a cake. And Ra.One!! sorry who told you that it will be loved like 3 Idiots? It will open well(same for D3) but to continue good run here i tend to disagree no one knows how the film will be so let’s just wait.

  • Those who r srk haters i feel very pity for them bcz srk will always rule bollywood nd they can’t bear srk’s success so its very painful for them. They must be very jealous by nature. Ra 1 nd Don 2 will be another punch on the faces of srk haters. I m proud to be srk fan.

  • @sonia
dhoom 3 will have earth shattering opening only because of aamir khan.it will never break 3 idiots record for sure because it is being directed by one of the worst director ever who gave disastrous tashan .no one even in his dream expected tashan to perform so badly.can you tell me what happened to tashan inspite of huge star cast?same is going to happen with dhoom 3.

  • Going by the lifetime collections of Don 1, the sequel is unlikely to come close to 3 Idiots. Even at its best, this SRK – Priyanka starrer will fall well below the 150 crore mark. The only reason we have included Don 2 is because it releases without any major competition during the Christmas weekend. Chances of beating 3 Idiots – 35%.

Indcine what the f***k is this ? It have all the chances if it is at its best . and not the christmas weekend but srk is also the reason.

  • @sonam: sorry dear can’t agree with u, even Ra.one is directed by one of the worst directors of the country anubhav sinha who directed flicks worse than Tashan then also forget about Ra.one beating 3I record in that case. And about the director of Tashan, i found tashan a decent film not a disastrous one, the concept was good it was not disastrous as it made out to be but maybe people expected more from it so they were disappointed. Also the director of Lagaan, ashu G gave disasters like Baazi and Pehla Nasha before Lagaan would you think that he could have made an oscar nominated movie. Let’s just be positive, if the script is good and well written we can expect a good film why not.

  • Anubhav sinha directed the trashy Cash if i’m not mistaken in the addition to other B-grade flicks which all were disasters and now directing a big project like Ra.One and people expecting it to beat 3 Idiots.
Get a life people, if u’re expecting Dhoom 3 to be a disaster then don’t expect too much from Ra.one; also i have faith in Aamir’s script sense so D3 can never be bad not the case with Ra.one though :)

  • well said sonam
now let us harvest bollywood reign and see whomis the true king
Shahrukh Khan (Urdu: ??? ??? ???, Hindi: ??????? ????; born 2 November 1965), often credited as Shah Rukh Khan, is an Indian film actor, as well as a film producer and television host. Often referred to as “The King of Bollywood”, Khan has acted in over 70 Hindi films.[2][3][4]
Khan began his career appearing in several television serials in the late 1980s. He made his film debut in Deewana (1992). Since then, he has been part of numerous commercially successful films and has earned critical acclaim for many of his performances. Khan has won fourteen Filmfare Awards for his work in Indian films, eight of which are in the Best Actor category (a record). In 2005, the Government of India honoured him with the Padma Shri for his contributions towards Indian Cinema.
Khan’s films such as Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (1995), Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), Chak De! India (2007), Om Shanti Om (2007) and Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (2008) remain some of Bollywood’s biggest hits, while films like Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham… (2001), Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003), Veer-Zaara (2004), Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006) and My Name Is Khan (2010) have been top-grossing Indian productions in the overseas markets, thus making him one of the most successful actors of India.[5]
Since 2000, Khan branched out into film production and television presenting as well. He is the founder/owner of two production companies, Dreamz Unlimited and Red Chillies Entertainment. Globally, Khan is considered to be one of the biggest movie stars,[2] with a fan following numbering in the billions[6] and a net worth estimated at over 2,500 crore (US$557.5 million).[7] In 2008, Newsweek named him one of the 50 most powerful people in the world.[2]

  • Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (Hindi: ??????? ????????? ?? ??????; English: The Big Hearted Will Take the Bride), also known as DDLJ,[3] is a Hindi language film released on 20 October 1995. A romantic comedy, the film marked the directorial debut of Aditya Chopra, and stars Shahrukh Khan and Kajol.
Earning over Rs 106 crore in India and Rs 15 crore overseas, the film became the biggest Bollywood hit of the year,[4] as well as one of the biggest Bollywood hits of all time.[5][6] It remains the longest-running film in the history of Indian cinema. As of 2011, it is still playing at the Maratha Mandir theatre in Mumbai.[7]
Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge was included in the Cinema India showcase, “The Changing Face of Indian Cinema”, which toured the United States in July and August 2004.[8] Indiatimes Movies ranks the movie amongst the 25 Must See Bollywood Films.[9] It was one of the two Hindi films in the 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die list (the other being Mother India).[10] It was also placed twelfth on the British Film Institute’s list of top Indian films of all time.[11]

  • Chak De! India (Hindi: ?? ?? ?????? English: “Come on! India”)[3] is a 2007 Indian sports film about field hockey in India. It is directed by Shimit Amin, produced by Yash Raj Films, written by Jaideep Sahni, sports action by ReelSports, and stars Shahrukh Khan as Kabir Khan, the former captain of the Indian hockey team. After a disastrous loss to the Pakistani hockey team, Khan is ostracized from the sport. He and his mother are further forced from their ancestral home by angry neighbors. Seven years later in an attempt to redeem himself, Khan becomes the coach for the Indian women’s hockey team with the goal of turning its sixteen contentious players into a champion team. After leading the women’s team to the Gold, Khan restores his reputation and returns with his mother to their home, welcomed by those who had shunned them years before.
Chak De! India explores religious bigotry, the legacy of partition, ethnic/regional prejudice, and sexism in contemporary India through field hockey.[4][5][6] Screenwriter Jaideep Sahni decided to write a fictional screenplay based on the winning of the Gold by the Indian women’s field hockey team at the 2002 Commonwealth Games after reading about it in the newspaper.[7][8] Thus the characters, while inspired by the real team and coaches, were invented by Sahni.[9] Although some media outlets compared Kabir Khan to real-life hockey player Mir Ranjan Negi,[10] Sahani has stated that he was unaware of Negi’s tribulations while writing the script and that the resemblance with Negi’s life was coincidental.[11]
Earning over Rs 639 million, Chak De! India was the fourth highest grossing movie of 2007 in India[12] and was critically acclaimed.[13] Chak De! India has won numerous awards (including eight for Best Film) and received the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment.[14] The suspension of the Indian Hockey Federation in April 2008 emphasized the film’s influence. After a new hockey council was formed, former hockey player, Aslam Sher Khan, stated in an interview, “We have to make a Team India as you have seen in bollywood blockbuster Chak De! India. There are players from several parts of the country. We have to unite them to make a powerful force.”[15]

  • My Name Is Khan (Hindi: ??? ??? ??? ????);[4] commonly referred to as MNIK,[5] is a 2010 Bollywood film directed by Karan Johar, with a screenplay by Shibani Bathija, produced by Hiroo Yash Johar and Gauri Khan, and starring Shahrukh Khan and Kajol,[6][7] who reunite after nine years (their last film together was Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham in 2001). It was overseen by both Dharma Productions and Red Chillies Entertainment and distributed by FOX Star Entertainment, which bought the rights for the film for a sum of INR 1 billion, thus becoming the most expensive Bollywood film of 2010.[8] It is also the highest buyover for any Indian film, breaking Ghajini’s record of INR 900 million.
My Name Is Khan is the fourth directorial venture of Karan Johar. Cinematography is by Ravi K. Chandran, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy composed the film’s score, choreography is by Farah Khan, and lyrics were written by Niranjan Iyengar.[9] Visual Effects are by Red Chillies VFX.
My Name is Khan debuted in Abu Dhabi, UAE on 10 February 2010.[10] It released globally in cinemas on 12 February 2010.[1] It was also screened as part of the 60th Berlin International Film Festival’s official selection the same month.[11] In the months leading up to its release, the film has also been involved in some controversy related to international airport security and Indian politics.
Upon release, the film broke many box office records, and became the highest-grossing Bollywood film overseas.[12] Within four weeks, the film crossed the INR 700 million mark in India and became the first film of 2010 to do so. In the overseas markets, the film grossed Rs. 110.34 crores ($28.25 million).[13] The film was released in India on DVD on 28 April 2010. Blu-ray in India, plus a DVD release worldwide followed on 10 August 2010.[14]

  • My Name Is Khan was not India’s official entry to the Oscars as best foreign language film, but it made it to the reminder list of films eligible for the 83rd Academy Awards.[93] This means that it was eligible to win in any category.[94]

  • In 1993, Khan won acclaim for his performances in villainous roles as an obsessive lover and a murderer, respectively, in the box office hits, Darr and Baazigar.[27] In Khan’s entry in Encyclopedia Britannica’s “Encyclopedia of Hindi Cinema” it was stated that “he defied the image of the conventional hero in both these films and created his own version of the revisionist hero.”[28] Darr marked his first collaboration with renowned film-maker Yash Chopra and his banner Yash Raj Films, the largest production company in Bollywood. Baazigar, which saw Khan portraying an ambiguous avenger who murders his girlfriend, shocked its Indian audience with an unexpected violation of the standard Bollywood formula.[29

  • Dil Se (Hindi: ??? ??, translation: From the Heart) is a 1998 Hindi film directed by Mani Ratnam. The film stars Shahrukh Khan, Manisha Koirala, and Preity Zinta. Mani Ratnam also co-wrote the screenplay for the film. It is the third in Ratnam’s trilogy of terror films that depict human relationships against a background of Indian politics, after Roja and Bombay.[2][3]
Dil Se was shot in Himachal, Kashmir, Assam, Delhi, Kerala, and other parts of India and Bhutan over a period of 55 days. The film is considered an example of Indian Parallel Cinema. The highly stylized film won awards for cinematography, audiography, choreography, and music, among others. Despite being a failure at the Indian box office, the film was a success overseas, becoming the first Indian film to enter the top 10 in the United Kingdom box office charts.[4][5]

  • Release and reception

Dil Se was screened at the Era New Horizons Film Festival and the Helsinki International Film Festival The film went on to win the Netpac Award for Special Mention at the Berlin International Film Festival, two National Film Awards, and six Filmfare Awards. The film was not a commercial success in India; in fact it was a failure. The intense political agenda of the film with the trials of the Assamese on the India-China border, the love story and the fact that it coincided with the 50th Independence Anniversary celebrations were cited for its failure at the time. [10] Interestingly, however, it became a major success overseas, particularly amongst the South Asian diaspora in the west.[11] It became the first Indian film to enter the top 10 in the United Kingdom box office charts. [4] Even two months after its release in September 1998 the film was still screened on five screens, five times per day with an average of 3000 spectators a day for each screen alone in the 14-screen Cineworld complex in Feltham, West London.[10]

    Chaiyya Chaiyya

“Chaiyya Chaiyya” (Hindi: ??????? ???????, “[walk] in shade”) is a Hindi song from the 1998 Hindi film Dil Se directed by Mani Ratnam. It is one of India’s most popular songs and is often used at cultural and festive events in the country.
The song was composed by A.R. Rahman, written by Gulzar, and sung by Sukhwinder Singh and Sapna Awasthi. It quickly became popular upon release and its music video gained the same status, partly because it was filmed on a moving train. The Hindustani version of the song is called “Chaiyya Chaiyya”, while the Tamil version is called “Thaiyya Thaiyya”.
In 2003, ?the BBC World Service conducted an international poll to choose the ten most popular songs of all time. Around 7000 songs were selected from all over the world. According to the BBC, people from 155 countries voted “Chaiyya Chaiyya” ninth in the top 10 songs.[1]

    [edit]About the song

The lyrics of “Chaiyya Chaiyya” are based on the Sufi folk song “Thaiyya Thaiyya” with lyrics by poet Bulleh Shah. Singer Sukhwinder Singh originally suggested the song to A.R. Rahman who was looking for a Punjabi devotional song to include on the soundtrack of Dil Se. Gulzar subsequently rewrote the lyrics and changed the name to “Chaiyya Chaiyya”.[2]
“Chaiyya Chaiyya” reached the top of the charts in India and became popular in the United Kingdom.
It is also featured in the opening of the second act of the musical Bombay Dreams, in which the train sequence from Dil Se is recreated on stage. Remixes of the song were used in the opening and closing credits of the 2006 film, Inside Man, starring Denzel Washington and Clive Owen, directed by Spike Lee and produced by Brian Grazer. The opening credits have an abridged version of the original with additional trumpet accompaniment and the closing credits feature a hip-hop-inflected remix featuring Punjabi MC (“Chaiyya Chaiyya Bollywood Joint”).
The song was featured in the pilot episode of the television show Smith. A cover of this song was performed in episode 5 of season 5 of CSI: Miami.
The original track and a live version of “Chaiyya Chaiyya” are featured in AR Rahman’s compilation album, A.R. Rahman – A World of Music.
The song was used during the opening ceremony of the 2010 Commonwealth Games held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, New Delhi on October 3, 2010.
“Chaiyya Chaiyya” became famous in Indonesia, after Norman Kamaru, a policeman from Gorontalo, Indonesia recorded himself lipsync-ing it and uploaded the video to Youtube. The name of the video is “Polisi Gorontalo Menggila”.[3]
    [edit]Music video

The video was filmed on top of the Ooty train (the Nilgiri Mountain Railway) in mountainous Tamil Nadu, southern India while actor Shahrukh Khan dances with model/actress Malaika Arora and other dancers. The film was directed by Ratnam and photographed by Santosh Sivan. The choreography was completed in four and half days by Farah Khan.[4] No major back projections or post-production special effects were used in the music video. Malaika Arora, one of the performer recalls: “Would you believe it? Well, the “Chaiya Chaiya” song was shot exactly as you see it on the screen: No camera tricks, no back projection, no post-production special effects!”[5] She also said that “…One of the unit members tripped and hurt himself. Other than that, things were safe.”[6]

  • What a foolish idea of predecting the fate of a movie according to the director’s achievement, a director can give a disastrous movie but then can also give a masterpiece. And like sonia said, Ashu had Pehla Nasha and Baazi in his achievements before Lagaan and wasn’t even taken seriously as a director. But after that he shocked everyone with Lagaan but also after he gave another disaster which is WYR.
I can name many directors who have done duds and also masterpieces so let’s just be positive and hope the film is good.

  • WTF! Guys stop being childish and copying wikipedia that won’t prove anything! PLz indicine team delete such dumb comments.

  • theses are not dumb comment dumb ass these are facts which prove shahrukh khan acting power and prowess and also his worldly recogntion what s more is that

  • Devdas (Hindi: ??????) is a 2002 Hindi film based on the Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay novella Devdas. This is the third Bollywood (Hindi) version and the first colour film version of the story in Hindi. The film is directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and stars Shahrukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit, and Aishwarya Rai in the leading roles.
At the time of its release, Devdas was the most expensive Bollywood film ever produced, with a reported budget of Rs 50 crores.[3] The film was released in six alternative language versions: English, French, German, Mandarin, Thai, and Punjabi.
Shahrukh Khan’s performance as the rebellious alcoholic Devdas is often considered one of his best performances, and won him a Filmfare Award. The song Dola Re Dola became a hit with its unique dance duet between Aishwarya Rai and Madhuri Dixit.
The film won five National Awards, ten Filmfare Awards including Best Film, and received a BAFTA nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. It was also India’s entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars. It was ranked #74 in Empire magazines “The 100 Best Films Of World Cinema” in 2010.[4] Time Magazine named Devdas as the best movie of 2002 among all the movies released around the world in 2002.[5]

  • Reception

The film received overwhelmingly strong critical acclaim from critics.Subhash K Jha, Indiatimes Movies gave 4.5 stars out of 5 and said Swades is a unique experiment with grassroot realism. It is so politically correct in its propagandist message that initially you wonder if the government of India funded the director’s dream.
Mayank Shekhar, Mid-Day gave 4 stars and called it ‘bravo!’ and added I cannot think of a better film for the longest that deserved a stronger recommendation for both touring cinemas of India’s villages, and plush multiplexes of Mumbai or Manhattan.
Jitesh Pillai, Sunday Times of India gave 4 stars and said After Lagaan, what? The answer’s blowing in the wind. Swades. Here’s the verdict: This is a gusty and outstanding film. Welcome back to real, solid film-making. and said Swades is undoubtedly the No 1 movie of the year.
Shradha Sukumaran, Mid-Day gave 3.5 stars and said At the end of it, Swades is a far braver film than Lagaan. It could have hit the high note — if it hadn’t tried so hard.
Most of the critics felt that Shahrukh Khan’s performance in Swades is his best performance till date
Swades went on to become a cult classic and currently holds a rating of 8.4 out of 10 on the Internet Movie Database, and Khan’s performance as Mohan Bhargava is considered to be one of his best by many. [13]
