3 Idiots released during Christmas 2009 and broke every possible record that existed back then. The film did about Rs 80 crores in Week 1 and the word-of-mouth was so good that it more than tripled its first weekend collections!
3 Idiots was a rare combination of the biggest actor in the country (Aamir Khan) paired with one of the most popular female stars (Kareena Kapoor) and in-arguably the most commercially successful director of the last decade (Rajkumar Hirani). A director who connects with both the masses and the urban audiences.
And like pointed out by one of our readers in the comments section, it requires a real special film to break the lifetime records set by 3 Idiots.
So which amongst the upcoming films are capable of beating the Rs 200 crores record set by 3 Idiots? Here are 5 films that we think, might pose a threat.
Note – we assume the all the films below will be liked, because otherwise there is absolutely no chance of coming close to 3 Idiots.
- Bodyguard – Going by the trailer that has just released, Salman Khan has yet another box office monster. A sure-shot blockbuster unless something goes terribly wrong. It has Kareena who commands a strong fan-following of her own. Director Siddique has experience on his side, but has never directed a Hindi film before. Chances of Bodyguard beating 3 Idiots – 40%.
- Ra One – Shahrukh Khan’s dream project and be rest assured, the superstar will be going all out to promote it. It releases during the 5 day Diwali weekend and is likely to beat the opening week record currently held by Dabangg (80.5 crores). But for it to beat the 3 Idiots record, it has to be exceptionally good. Chances of going past the 200 crore mark – 70%.
- Don 2 – Going by the lifetime collections of Don 1, the sequel is unlikely to come close to 3 Idiots. Even at its best, this SRK – Priyanka starrer will fall well below the 150 crore mark. The only reason we have included Don 2 is because it releases without any major competition during the Christmas weekend. Chances of beating 3 Idiots – 35%.
- Krrish 3 – Some of territories have already been sold to distributors, which clearly shows that the superhero film has massive demand already. Rakesh Roshan is one of the most successful commercial directors ever and him teaming up with his superstar son after 6 long years ensures a earth-shattering initial. If good, Krrish 3 has great chances of going past 3 Idiots since it most likely will release in 2013 – 80%
- Dhoom 3 – Aamir Khan in a Dhoom film. Enough said. It all comes down to Vijay Krishna Acharya though, who last directed the disastrous Tashan. But when Aamir is there, All izz always well! And yes, releases during Christmas 2012. Chances of beating 3 Idiots – 95%.

Well i don’t think it’s difficult to predict, i mean the 3rd Dhoom is back in action, with Aamir Khan, the script is good no doubt, it will be the biggest opener in the history of indian cinema and then if it’s a good movie(i hope so) it will break all records be it 3 Idiots, Ra.One….any record will be broken mark my words just wait for christmas 2012 you can expect anything from Aamir.
To be really honest i didn’t like Dhoom, nor Don nor Krrish all sucked in my opinion(esp Krrish).
I hope sequels will be better.

If the crappy Dhoom 2 which sucked and almost no one liked can gross 150cr in 2006 imagine Dhoom 3 with Aamir in 2012 and that too in christmas! Forget about the content of the film, it will break all records even if it sucks, but if it’s good let us not talk better! 500cr lifetime at least.

I think Hrithik’s krrish-2,krrish-3 can do it.cause hrithik is well known all over the world and he has a huge fans all over.on the other hand don-2,ra.1,dhoom-3,can but akki can’t cross 100 crore with 2 movie ha ha ha.let’s see

1. Ra 1 >>> 95%
2. Don 2 >>> 98%
The following three movies will break records of ra 1 nd don 2 bcz at that time 3 idiots record will already be broken. I think these three will easily pass 3idiots record nd even can set new records by surpassing the previous records.
3. Dhoom 3 >> 98%
4. Yash raj film >>> 99%
5. Dabang 2 >> 95%
So for me 3 idiots record is in very much danger. All three khans r best. But one has to be best amongst best. Lets wish for the best to win.
@hi: yeah i thought about that too, but the movie does not look like a commercial flick. I don’t think it’ll become a big hit coz it’s a suspence thriller but i’m sure it’s a good movie no doubt. Can’t understand why Aamir took 2 years break after 3 Idiots!! Did he lost it? I mean he was enjoying success that no one enjoyed but as usual he should stay at home to solve personnal problems launch his wife’s career and his nephew’s marriage, same what he did after Lagaan and Dil Chahta Hai, he left us 4 years!!!!

Same applies to that Hrithik who took even more breaks, he takes a break every year! and doing 2 films in 5 years will lead him nowhere. At least one film per year it’ll work.
Yash raj film means yash chopra film with srk nd kat. This movie has best people from the industry in each field like AR Rehman as music producer nd i think javed akhtar nd gulzar for lyrics nd many others.

Ahhh, Aamir Khan!! what can i say about this man? He has always been kind of whimsical and has always tested his fans’ patience. I remember talking to an older fan of AK, and she did say that his fans were shocked and protested like hell, when he announced that he would do only 1 film a year! A certain section of fans still keeps requesting him to do at least 2 per year!!
The worst thing is that post 2001, he has even stopped doing 1 film per year!! That 4 year break was disastrous to say the least! He was on top of everyone’s minds and darling of the nation post Lagaan and DCH. Instead of capitalising on the fame and success, he went totally underground and made himself irrelevant!
Had he continued to work, he would have managed at least 2-3 successful films in addition to the ones he already has, in this decade!
It seems he only knows one way to deal with problems – take a break for years altogether!
Even now, I think it was nothing but foolish to take a break of two more years, right after giving two back to back ATBBs like Ghajini and 3 Idiots, plus a series of successful and much loved films like RDB and TZP in past. His fans wanted him to complete a hattrick of ATBBs or at least continue and make the most of the momentum…but he simply dashed all hopes and took 2 years break to produce so-called world cinema art films (which are basically one time watch kind of films). The 2 year break post 3 Idiots is not justifiable by any means at all!
He could have given a successful film as an actor last year and released another potential success for this year too. Ideally he should have tried his best to make the most of the status which he has attained now as a star. But strange as he is, he chose to produce arty films or get his nephew married or launch his wife’s career!
I don’t buy the personal issues excuse much. Salman has had more tumultuous personal life issues, than him, but still he continued to work and didn’t disappear like he never existed! Kajol also suffered a miscarriage in 2001. But I don’t remember Ajay Devgn giving up all work and taking years of breaks to help her deal with the crisis. Many actors and actresses have lost their family member or faced personal ordeals, but no one took years and years of breaks to ”deal with it”. Whereas Aamir takes years and years of breaks, either because he had a divorce or coz his father expired or coz his second wife had a miscarriage or because he has to get his nephew married or get his brother settled in some work, after he recovered from illness!

Aamir and SRK rock they are the best and the most brilliant actors of the last 2 decades, both fantastic actors in their own ways, both redifined films in Hindi Cinema. Wonderful acting skills, unforgettable films, exellent performances…those who i call by real superstars. They do not cheat their audience nor disappoint their fans, they have people who love them but not blindly, their fans give them honest feedback not go crazy or gaga gaga over them, their films are the most awaited films, they get big openings but also people love thier films. These two Khans have been two different phenomens in Hindi Cinema both took Bollywood to a new level, hats off to them. Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar suck!
I mean what did they add to the indian cinema, well Salman at least have MPK, HAHK, HDDCS and Dabangg but apart from those i don’t remember any other siginfant films of him, besides those films rocked not becuase of him but because they rocked. HAHK was a Madhuri show and she took all credit from him, Andaz Apna Apna you all know about it where Aamir overshadowed him and stole the show. HDDCS too it’s rememebered by Ajay the most if i’m not wrong. Akshay better not talk about him, from the start of his career starred in B grade movies, his movies of the early 2000’s were fine but post Garam Masala what the hell was he thinking about?
Anyways let’s hope the best to Bollywood.
After 2 days surfing internet in various websites and blogs to figure out the buzz of Bodyguard trailer I have come to conclusion that All are 100% confident that it will be above 100Crores Grosser but there is a fight between Salman Fans and those who oppose that it can beat 3 idiots or not. Salman fans are 90% sure it will beat 3 idiots and those who oppose are 100% (Cant bear the burn, the trailer has generated) confident that it will not break records. If there is 100% collection (both multiplex and SS) on day 1 then the collection would be above 25Crores on day one but no film can have 100% collection. 1st week record will be broken damn sure or might cross 100Crores in Week one and it will sustain 2nd week but has competition from Meri Brother ki Dulhan. If that moves then 185Crores are guaranteed but remaining should be covered with Salman Fans if they want to see Bodyguard break the records of 3 Idiots. But one thing is sure now that Whatever critics say or oppose Salman is now the Undisputed King of Hindi Film Industry.
Story is concerned it will touch your heart. Siddique has mastered Bodyguard remake. To those who oppose – Chill, when your favourite stars are criticised you too feel worst. Instead try to say good things if you like it or oppose if you don’t but be lovable and adorable. So that if u post something then people can trust you.

The best response to the trailer this year is garnered by Bodyguard and then Don2 and then Ra1. Level of Chances of breaking 3idiots records by bodyguard comes in between medium to difficult and hence Don2 and Ra1 cannot even surpass 180 Crores in life time in INDIA. But definitely overseas Don2 may set new records. Ra1 not sure about overseas. But all three films will have profits, either thearitical or non-thearitcal.

how many hits aamir has given before ghajini and 3 idiots?it was srk who has given consistent hits upto 2007.it all began from 2008 when sallu and amir overtook srk in terms of box office collection.srk is the sachin of bollywood.in the history of bollywood tell me which actor has enjoyed commercial success more than srk.if you combine the box office collection of india and overseas then it is 10 times more than sallu or amir films.be assured just like sachin every record will be in srk’s name by the end of the day.after all he is called king for nothing.
@sonu: You’re right when you say SRK is the most consitent actor in giving hits, but sorry not in giving good performances. Aamir on the other hand have been consistenly giving exellent performances and path breaking films just from 1992, JJWS, HHRPK, AAA, Rangeela, AHAT, Ghulam, Sarfarosh, Earth all were mind-blowing performances and exellent movies but it’s his bad luck that such film didn’t do well at BO while trashy movies succeeded at that time. SRK on the other hand delivered hits from 1993 but after DDLJ can u tell me apart from Swades and DCI which were his other credible performances?
Also most of his hits were the same kind of movies, with the same directors, co-actors, banners, overacting in each one…be it KKHH, K3G, DTPh, Veer-Zaara, KANK…same same same, same SRK in every movie, watch them and you’ll see SRK personnality in them, people still remmeber them because of him. But do you call this versatility? Is this creativity?
Sorry dear even though Aamir’s old movies weren’t successful they were brilliant and treat to watch, i’ll choose them over any of the craps that were made at that time.
