AskIndicine: Live Now

Begu2The first set of 7 questions have been answered. Next update at 9:45PM. Q. Will any film be able to beat Baahubali 2 soon? Even you guys underestimated Baahubali. What about Randamoozham? A. It’s impossible to estimate or predict outperforming films like Bahubali 2.  We can only make realistic predictions based on hype, advance booking etc – but to expect a dubbed film to beat the opening day collections of holiday releases like Prem Ratan Dhan Payo or even Sultan – on a non-holiday Friday, is impossible. Even on Friday morning it was difficult to predict the film would touch 40 crore. Even our LBO predictions became a bit of a joke. We started with 200 crore before release, which was almost double of the first film (Bahubali The Beginning) – but no one expected it to do nearly 4 times the business. Randamoozham is in the planning stages. It can be big if it manages to rope in superstars from various industries, but even then it would have to be an extraordinary big-screen experience for it to come anywhere close to Bahubali 2: The Conclusion. At the moment, we’d rather put our money on Robot 2.0 than Randamoozham. Q. How much can Dangal collect from China? Also can Bahubali 2 create record in China market also ? A. Lifetime in China cannot be predicted. But if it trends as well as PK, then it can collect somewhere between $40-50 million (Rs 260-320 crore). That itself would be double the lifetime collections of PK in China. On Bahubali 2, the first film didn’t do well, so the second might not even find takers. Even if it does, it’s unlikely to be as big as PK or Dangal. Q. Can you please tell us why Rajkumar Rao is so much underrated inspite of being the most talented youngster.. will he end up being underrated like Nawaz Siddiqui and Manoj Bajpai? A. Rajkumar Rao, Nawazuddin and Manoj are certainly not underrated actors. Their performances are almost always praised. If you mean mainstream acceptance, then the only way for the ‘niche actors’ is to follow the route which Nawazuddin Siddiqui has taken. They need to get to play parts in major films, only then can they reach out to a larger section of the audience. If they continue doing films like ‘Trapped’ which very few people watch, then their audience will always be limited. Q. Would you mind telling when will Dutt Biopic release and what’s your expectations from movie? A. It’s expected to release later this year. We stick to what we said long ago; Dutt Biopic will take the Padmavati date and Tiger Zinda Hai will get a solo release. Do note, that this is not official. It’s more of speculation, just like the time when we said Aamir would move Secret Superstar to a different date – soon after Toilet was announced for Independence Day weekend. It’s the most sensible thing to do for Dutt biopic, no point getting involved in a clash when Bahubali 2 has shown that a good film can collect at any time. Q. What are the chances of final collection of Bahubali 2 in Hindi?? Is there any possibility of 500 cr.?? A. Like we mentioned in the article earlier today, Bahubali 2 Hindi will collect 440 crore plus if it collects as much as Dangal did after its 9th day. But since it’s collecting at a much higher level than Dangal, it could do more than 450 crore and 500 crore net cannot be ruled out. Q. If Judwaa 2 earns big then will Varun joins the likes of Ranveer Singh and Ranbir Kapoor? A. Varun is already bigger than Ranveer and more consistent too. Ranbir is certainly a bigger star. In the right film (Dutt biopic could be that film), his audience will be back in big numbers. Q. Don’t you think you should have posted the article of Tubelight teaser response a few days later as the response would have been more clear. You were bashed a lot and the response isn’t that mixed, its on positive side even outside social media. I hope you will clarify your stand. A. Almost all our articles are well-researched, analysed and we take enough time too. What you get to read on social media, especially on big films – is far from the reality. We know several trade guys who praised the teaser on social media, but off-record said the teaser was average. The point here is, none from the trade will publicly criticise a big film. It could be for the fear of getting bashed, trolled or because of their close relationship within the industry or with the actor/filmmaker/banner involved. Our article was constructive criticism, all we said was that the film did not require a teaser, it hasn’t created the necessary impact which a teaser should and that they should come up with a better trailer. The second part of QnA below: Q. Can Tubelight collect 400 crore and why there is lot negativity regarding teaser. People saying it a remake. A. 400 crore cannot be predicted at this point in time. If it connects with the audience as well as Bajrangi Bhaijaan did, then it will certainly have a good chance of surpassing 400 . The negativity around the teaser is because of the similarities with the Hollywood film ‘Little Boy’ and because it was just a normal teaser – it hasn’t had the impact which teasers of Sultan / Ek Tha Tiger or even Bajrangi Bhaijaan did. It isn’t negative, but mixed. Many have liked it, many haven’t. And the dislike ratio will probably be higher at mass / smaller centres, which is Salman’s core fan-base.. that’s because it doesn’t have those entertaining elements which his audience like to see him in. This could well change after the trailer, which should be watched by a larger section of the audience. Q. How would you rate Tubelight teaser out of 10? What are your expectations from the movie now? A. 5 / 10. Expectations box office-wise doesn’t change, people will still come in big enough numbers because its a Salman Khan film. But it really need to outperform after Ramzan in every circuit to challenge the records set by Bahubali 2. Q. What will be final world wide gross of Baahubali 2? A. 1250 crore plus worldwide gross. Q. Is Aamir really a global superstar if we exclude China? A. Why do we need to exclude China when his film is expected to collect more than the highest ever overseas grosser – just in China? North America he leads with Dangal and PK – the only films to cross $10 million (which now Bahubali 2 has also done). Only in UAE/GCC his films haven’t really set records – apart from that his films are strong in almost all other traditional and non-traditional markets. Certainly the biggest globally when it comes to current standing. Q. Will the adaptation thing affect Tubelight? If Tubelight turns out to be like Little Boy, will it connect the Pan-India audience? A. It won’t affect the film. Most of the Indian audience hasn’t watched ‘Little Boy’. It’s a Indian version with Indian emotions, so the fate of Tubelight depends more on the writing, Kabir Khan’s direction and Salman Khan’s performance.. more than whether or not the film is inspired. Q. What Will Be The Opening Day Collection Of ‘Tubelight’? A. We expect it to be around the 30 crore mark – given the fact that it’s releasing during Ramzan when the muslim audience doesn’t watch films. It also doesn’t have those massy ingredients that ensure a bumper opening, so it’ll be interesting to see how Tubelight tracks. It doesn’t have a heroine or a strong supporting cast. So the selling points will only be Salman Khan and his combo with Kabir Khan. Music could also play a role, so we’ll have to wait to see how the soundtrack is. Q. People saying Prabhas is bigger star than all Bollywood superstar barring Salman Khan or may be even SRK. Is this correct according to you? A. Not true, he’s not even close in the Hindi markets. But Prabhas does have the potential to be a pan-India star and he does have a following with the Hindi audience now. So we’ll have to wait and see how his next film ‘Saaho’ performs. Some more questions answered.. Q. What is Hrithik’s next project before Krrish 4? A. We haven’t heard anything. Q. When will younger generation star give 300cr. Can Ranbir and Ranveer do it as they are the only one who are doing big budget movies with big director? A. Ranbir could with Dutt biopic. If the film is as good as Hirani’s other films, then 300 crore is definitely a possibility – which is one of the reasons why they should avoid a clash. Q. Can Tubelight cross 40 crore mark on any day? How weekend 1 & week 1 are you expecting? Plz reply A. Watch out for the business on Sunday and Monday (currently listed as government holiday for Eid). It could cross 40 crore on those days – provided the word-of-mouth is very good. Q. Does the mixed response to the teaser of TUBELIGHT going to affect its opening day collection? A. It shouldn’t – Salman Khan and Eid has become a habit and the star is too big at the moment. But a good trailer is important. Q. What is Hrithik Roshan’s next film and around when will it release ? Indicine…we all know Hrithik Roshan is a bigger superstar than Akshay Kumar…Hrithik has been far more consistent than Akshay and has by far the better success ratio and Akshay was good only last year . Why do u tell Hrithik is 5th and Akshay is 4th ? In reality Akshay is far behind at 5th and Hrithik is just behind SRK at 4. A. We can only talk about the current standing. Akshay has been much more consistent and does far more films (which is again very important). If an actor does 1 film in 1-2 years and comes with a big disaster like Mohenjo Daro, it simply isn’t good enough. Even Kaabil didn’t open well, but reached a decent total due to word-of-mouth. Q. Don’t you think there should be regular collaborations of south and Bollywood stars to fully utilise the full potential of Indian film market which itself will give bigger budgets for potentially more movies like Bahubali or pan Indian film your take on that. A. The South-North combination does have a lot of potential. Crores of people have watched Bahubali just in the two states of Telangana and Andhra – most of that section of the audience do not watch Hindi films in theatres, even the biggest of films. So if the two industries do collaborate and come up with bilingual mass entertainers – then the film do have the potential to be huge box office wise. A Salman Khan teaming up with Pawan Kalyan or Mahesh Babu could prove to be interesting both for the Telugu as well as Hindi audience. Q. Can Bollywood make a movie that will be watched by pan India audience like baahubali? if yes then which actor/director can make it possible. Plz answer this question, I’ve never got a answer in your Q n A session. A. Apologies for not answering your previous questions. Now that we know the potential of film business in India, some our banners could well be looking at exploring possible opportunities to bring the Pan-India audience to watch a film. The credit should go to Karan Johar for taking a Bahubali from regional to the Hindi audience across the country. If Robot 2.0 we could well be seeing more South-North combinations. Q. What are the next new things which Indicine is planning to bring upon their websites? A. We are currently waiting for clarity on GST from the government. After that some announcements will be made. Thanks for you interest. Q. Is booking EDX about starpower or who is desperate for it. You once said that top stars are those who have the potential to book and ensure a solo release for their film on EDX. So putting the Khans aside, if we take a look at Hrithik, Akshay and Ajay, Ajay is way ahead of Akki and Hrithik in booking Diwali and has a good record on that weekend. Hrithik had just 2 festival releases in his entire career(Mission Kashmir and Krrish 3) while Akshay’s last festive release was in 2010(Tees Maar Khan). Does it mean Ajay is bigger star than Hrithik-Akshay or why are Hrithik and Akshay not eager to book Diwali or Eid-Xmas? A. It isn’t that simple. Any producer can book any date, but holding on to the date and getting a solo release – like Sultan did last year, is what we call true star power. Even next year’s Eid has no announcement as yet, because most in the industry know that the weekend belongs to Salman. A franchise like Golmaal or Dhoom isn’t about stardom alone, the franchise itself is more powerful than the star. Q. Is it true that Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif are trying to be together again? Salman Khan, who once never used to talk about Katrina Kaif nowadays posted and welcomed Kat in Viber and even facebook. What is their relationship status? A. Please do not post any question relating to the personal life of stars. Thanks. Q. Good morning indicine Big fan of your site and great job always. I have a question pls. Between Aamir Khan Salman Khan Ajay Devgan Shah Rukh Khan who was the youngest among them to win the back then respected Filmfare award for Best debut actor. Thank you. A. Aamir Khan was the youngest. He won the away in 1989, before Salman made his debut. All three Khans are of the same age, Ajay is about 2 years younger. Q. Who is the highest paid actors in the industry today? Can you name five of them with their charge per film? A. Most of the top actors are producing their own films. We can only go by market value – which is the same as the Top 5 – Aamir, Salman, SRK, Akshay, Hrithik. Aamir would probably command a bigger pay check because his films earn more globally and he does fewer films as compared to Salman. Q. Doesn’t Akshay have the best lineup of movies? At times when most of the films are the routine rom-coms, look at how diverse films he has, each film something new to offer- Airlift, Rustom, Jolly LLB 2 followed by Toilet, Padman, 2.0, Gold, Crack and Mogul. A. It’s a strong line-up for sure. But most of those films are ‘content-driven’ and not commercial or massy. So it’s also about content finding acceptance, especially for a film like Padman which looks quite risky on paper. Q. Do you think there is any chance of averting clash between SRK with Imtiaz and Akshay’s Toilet Ek Prem Katha… A. We still have 3 months to go, so it’s enough time to avert the clash. But it’ll have to be the SRK films that’ll have to move. We doubt the makers of ‘Toilet:EPK’ will move now. They already knew the SRK film was releasing, so we doubt they’d want to move now. Q. Can 2.0 be a major grosser? How much will losing a weekend like Diwali affect it? A. We’ve seen ‘Bahubali 2’ now. It was a normal weekend and it’s Hindi version alone is going to beat Dangal. If the audience is interested in watching and the film is good, the weekend of release does not matter. Q. I have no questions.. But from the heart, I wanna say Thank You soo much for all your effort that you bring up each day to entertain us. Its been more than 2 years since I have become the regular Indiciner and will continue to love and support you. Love From Nepal!!!!!! A. Thank you so much. Do keep visiting and reading. Q. What is GST and how it will increase footfalls of movies? A. GST is Goods and Service Tax which is expected to come into effect from 1st July. Whether it will increase collections or footfalls is something that we have to wait and see. The reason we’ve said in the past that GST could increase footfalls is when taxes are reduced and if theatre owners decide to pass on the benefit to the consumer – then tickets could get cheaper, which should encourage more people to watch films. GST could also affect the South film industries, because some say there won’t be tax exemption for South films after GST. Q. What are the total collections and verdicts of Jolly LLB 2, Rangoon, Trapped, Commando 2, Badrinath Ki Dulhania, Phillauri, Naam Shabana, Begum Jaan, Noor, Fast 8 (in India) and The Ghazi Attack (Hindi+Tamil+Telugu) versions ? A. Jolly LLB 2 116 crore (Hit), Rangoon 20 crore (Disaster), Trapped 2.85 crore (Flop), Commando 2  25 crore (Flop), Badrinath Ki Dulhania 118 crore (Super Hit), Phillauri 26 crore (Below Average), Naam Shabana 36 crore (Below Average),  Begum Jaan 18.5 crore (Flop), Noor 7.5 crore (Flop), Fast 8 87 crore (Super Hit), The Ghazi Attack 21 crore (Average). That’s it for today. We have many more questions. We’ll answer some of the unanswered questions next Sunday. Thank you for joining us.

PK, Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Sultan, Dangal, Bahubali 2: 300 crore films collection comparison

Only 5 films have crossed the 300 crore net mark in the Hindi markets. Until now it was PK, Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Sultan, Dangal – two each to Aamir Khan and Salman Khan. But the latest film to join the ‘300 crore club’ is S.S. Rajamouli’s ‘Bahubali 2 The Conclusion’. Over the next few days, what will be most interesting to see – will be the trend of ‘Bahubali 2’. So far, on a day to day level, ‘Bahubali 2’ has easily outperformed all Hindi films – barring the 5th day of ‘Sultan’ which was a Sunday and the 7th day of ‘PK’ which was a holiday for Christmas.

Bahubali 2 becomes 1st Indian film to cross 1000 crore

Bahubali 2 has become the first Indian film to cross the Rs 1000 crore mark worldwide and it has managed to do so in just 10 days after its theatrical release. The previous highest grosser was Aamir Khan’s Dangal – which is running successfully in China and coincidentally crosses the 800 crore mark globally today. Bahubali 2 had collected approximately Rs 840 crore gross worldwide in its first week, which has touched close to 960-970 crore at the end of Saturday (Day 9). The film has / will cross the 1000 crore mark today.

Dangal’s extraordinary box office collections in Taipei, Taiwan

Aamir Khan’s Dangal is performing extraordinarily well in markets that aren’t known to open up for Hindi Films. The collections in Taipei (capital city of Taiwan) are beyond extraordinary as the film is showing excellent trend – with collections sustaining and growing with each passing week. The film is expected to collect more than $5 million in Taiwan, with collections from Taipei itself expected to cross $2.5 million.

Bahubali 2 North America Collections: Set to smash Dangal

S.S. Rajamouli’s Bahubali 2 will become the highest grossing Indian Film in North America (USA / Canada) in just 6 days – as the film is on a record-breaking, historic run. The highest grossing Indian film of all time is Dangal, which collected $12.37 million. Bahubali 2 has already collected nearly $11 million and should cross the lifetime business of Dangal on Wednesday as the collections on Tuesday are phenomenal.

Bahubali 2 vs Dangal: Box Office Collection Comparison

Bahubali 2 is on a historic, record-smashing run at the box office the world over, but it would be an understatement to say the collections from the Hindi version has shocked the trade. The film has destroyed the record of the biggest of Hindi releases on its opening day as well as its first weekend and the trend suggests the 4-month-old record of Dangal – which collected Rs 387 crore at the domestic box office – will soon be history.

Bahubali 2 Worldwide Box Office Collections

S.S. Rajamouli’s Bahubali 2 has collected close to $80 million (510 crore) worldwide in its first weekend at the box office. This includes a record-breaking earth-shattering weekend for the Hindi and Telugu versions – with only the Tamil version failing to break records in the state. All other states have either broken the previous weekend records, or doubled / tripled the previous best.

Bahubali 2 Monday Advance Booking Report

The advance that Bahubali 2 got in its opening weekend was surprising, but not shocking because the film was carrying unprecedented craze. But the advance booking for Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday across the country is unbelievable. In fact, at most major cities, almost all shows will be running to 90-100% occupancy for most part of the day.

Bahubali 2 Day 2 Box Office Collections

Bahubali 2 is on a legendary run at the box office. The Day 1 all-India collections were nearly 3 times more than any other Indian film and Day 2 is no different. Saturday was record-breaking at multiplexes, with metro cities recording better than Friday. A section of the trade is yet to digest the fact that a dubbed film like ‘Bahubali 2’ is performing as well as it has in the core Hindi markets.

AskIndicine: 30 Questions Answered

First 10 questions answered: Q. Will the Hindi version of Baahubali cross Dangal lifetime collection in India? A. Difficult to put any number at this point in time. It all depends on the level of business during the weekdays. If Bahubali 2 Hindi holds above the 25 crore mark on Monday, then there is a chance of beating Dangal. If collections are at 30 crore plus levels, then Dangal will be history. The advance booking for Baahubali 2 is excellent for Monday. Better than the opening day advance of all Hindi films this year. Q. Can Sanjay Dutt biopic cross 200 cr? What will be the position of Ranbir after that? A. It should, given Rajkumar Hirani’s track record. But it’s very difficult to put any number with certainty without watching the trailer or without even knowing the exact release date of the film. Even then it’s difficult to predict now, because 200 crore requires the film to be good. Hirani is a fantastic writer / director, but when the expectations are big, the chances of disappointing the audience is high too. Q. Even after seeing what Bahubali 2 has pulled off…will the silly egoist Bollywood filmmakers stop washing dirty linen in public for the release dates of superstar movies..? Will the EDX factor thing gets decimated and more and more superstar big budget movies will get released in normal weekends thus getting a free run without much competition…? If not now then when will Bollywood wake up…? A. The trend of booking festive weekends in advance is unlikely to change. Why would someone like a Salman let go of the weekend that he created, just because a film like Bahubali 2 has worked during a non-holiday/festive weekend. But we hope, filmmakers realise that a good film can work any weekend. The Jungle Book collected 190 crore in April, Bahubali 2 is setting records in the same month – which was not too long ago considered to be weak due to IPL. Even Badrinath Ki Dulhania did very well considering the exam period. So it’s not about getting the release date right, it’s about getting the film right. Filmmakers in the Hindi film industry need to realise that there is a huge audience for Indian films out there, but if you make urban films for the Juhu / Bandra audience, 95% of the movie audience won’t be interested. The obsession behind holiday, could also be the pressure and insecurity of a superstar, that makes him feel more comfortable with the boost that a extra holiday or two provides. But going solo during a normal weekend is better than a clash like Raees/Kaabil during Republic Day. Q. What is the LBO Bahubali 2 according to you, is this Indian Avatar movie A. We have no idea at the moment, we’ll probably give the final LBO prediction tomorrow because it’s unpredictable at the moment. It isn’t a normal Hindi film and it could pretty much do anything depending on how it sustains over the weekdays. On an all India level, it has raised the bar for film business in India – like Sholay, Hum Aapke Hai Kaun and maybe even 3 Idiots. It has also shown the true potential of a Pan-India film – it’ll go past a Dangal in a short span of 3 to 4 days. But even when it comes to a film like ‘Bahubali 2’ only around 8-10 crore (expected) of the 130 crore population will be watching the film in theatres. It’s still 2 or 3 times more than the biggest of Hindi films in the last couple of decades, but back in the 70s and 80s, Amitabh Bachchan films used to get as many footfalls as a Bahubali 2 of today. With plenty of entertainment options and piracy, times are different, but still there’s tremendous potential for film business in India. Q. How are the inside reports of Tubelight from your trustworthy sources? Anywhere same as Dangal? I hope I will get an answer this time dear Indicine. A. We don’t know any trustworthy source who has seen the film, but internally the reports are positive. Q. Do you think the Opening day record of Baahubali 2 will cross by any other films in the next 2/3 years..??? Is there any Bollywood film in development to compete with Baahubali in terms of scale and appeal..? A. Again, it’s impossible to predict the future. Most of us in the trade thought the Dangal record is safe for the next couple of years, but Bahubali 2 Hindi could beat it if it holds for 2-3 weeks. There’s Robot 2.0 too.. it’s a unique combination of Bollywood + South. So if it turns out to be very well made and entertaining.. who knows? Rajnikanth is massive in the entire south, Akshay will add star value in the north and Shankar has top-class masala director, whose films have excellent repeat-value. Let’s not even get into 2-3 years, when a film releasing in 8-9 months has big potential. Q. Looking at the craze can bahubali 2 cross 400crs in Hindi version only ? As the weekend collections are looking like 120+Cr.. what’s your take ? A. Possible, but improbable. Let’s wait to see where it lands on Monday. Q. SRK once said that he is going to do a film with Adithya Chopra which is made on a huge budget with heavy dose VFX. After that there were no updates…So do you think the film will happen…?? If its big on scale and appeal do you it will have a impact on all India Level like Baahubali? A. Just because a Bahubali 2 released, does not mean unrealistic expectations. And even a Bahubali 2 has happened because of unique circumstances. Also, our Hindi stars are not watched by the core audience of South films, which pretty much rules out any possibility of a Bahubali 2 like scenario. The only film that can closest to Bahubali 2 is Robot 2.0. Q. Vinod Khanna or Dharmemdra… who was the bigger star? A. Dharmendra. Q. Briefly compare the careers of Akshay and Ajay from 1991-2017…. in three portions 1990-2000, 2000-2001, 2010-2017? A. Akshay Kumar has been ahead all the way through, barring those years when Golmaal 3 and Singham Returns released. The Singham Returns year (2014) was a mixed year for both stars, both had one big success and one failure. 2010 belonged to Ajay, when Golmaal 3 finished off Action Replay during Diwali. This page will be updated with 10 more answers at 10PM Indian Time: Q. Would u please explain how can a film earn 80+ crore from just 3000-3500 screen like Bahubali did in south where the Bollywood movie are grossing just 45 Crore with 4500 screen. A. Hindi films are heavily taxed in the major states of business, whereas South /Regional films either get complete tax exemption or pay very low taxes compared to 30-40-50% for Hindi films. The net figures are after deduction of entertainment taxes, while the gross figures include tax. This is likely to change after GST and the tax system will be uniform all across. Regional films may not get tax exemption, which will negatively impact them and benefit the Hindi Film Industry. Q. Which movie can break records of Bahubali2 in Bollywood? A. We don’t see any Hindi film coming close to Bahubali 2 in the next few months / years. Q. Padmavathi, Thugs, Dragon , Dhoom 4*, Krrish 4, SOS2, Ra One 2 ….all are expected to be a once in a lifetime Theatre experience movies in terms of Indian movie standards . All these films will also be in the Baahubali scale …yet do you think it can generate high collection from South just like Baahubali 1 ( avoid Baahubali 2)did in Hindi movie market if all these films get good response ? A. Bahubali 1 was a fantastic film, but the makers were lucky to get a filmmaker like Karan Johar to back it and promote it. Once the base was provided, the content took over. People who watched the film in theatre, were eager to watch the second part.. while those who missed out and watched it on TV.. wanted to experience the second film on the big screen. Without the boost that television provided, it was impossible to get the kind of opening that it got. Welcome Back and Singham Returns had similar recall value, although both performed at a much lower level, television provided a boost. The problem with Dhoom series is.. inspite of it being extremely popular, the quality of films is going lower with each new film. Dhoom 1 was the best, then comes Dhoom 2 and Dhoom 3 was probably the weakest film. It lessens the brand value and the eagerness of the audience to watch it in theatres. Krrish suffers to an extent because of constant comparisons with Hollywood superhero films. The collections were very weak in ‘class’ circuits like Mysore. The problem is limited budget. How can a Hindi superhero film compete with Hollywood.. when they invest Rs 1500 crore and we have only 100 crore? Bahubali makers spent nearly 250 crore plus on the two films.. yet somewhere the VFX wasn’t upto the mark in the second film. The scale was there though and that’s because of the genius of Rajamouli. So while the audience come to see Bahubali for the film.. Krrish series is more about Hrithik himself, put anyone else and it’ll fall flat. Sequel of Ra One should not even be attempted, it was a rejected film. Let’s see how the other films go. Q. Hello indicine . Absolutely love your work . You guys are gem. My question : Bahubali is huge everyone knows that . How big is it gonna be for the star cast I.E. prabhas and Rana in their upcoming movies ? Does this movie make the biggest stars up south and put up against newcomers in Bollywood or it’s the content that’s the star here ? Since Bahubali is such huge grosser in two days that khans numbers looks puny specially srk’s . Does it also affect the khans since almost everyone today is more curious and driven by the number it grossed than the content . Will it put pressure on them ??Reason for asking is everyone on web is mentioning the numbers Bahubali grossed than the efforts whole team made specially Prabhas , Rana and Anushka Shetty except of course the reviewers which no one is interested in for this movie. You made right move not reviewing this . Admire your decision :) A. Thank you. The decision to not review the film is because Bahubali is a big-screen experience. People know exactly what to expect. Even otherwise, we believe the audience should decide whether to watch a film or not for themselves by watching the trailer. Reviews create preconceived notions, which can ruin the pleasure of watching a film in a theatre and there’s the big difference in taste between what critics and the normal audience like to watch. To answer your main question, it’ll be interesting to see if Prabhas can make a mark in the Hindi film industry. If he’s presented well and he can do a commercial film under commercial directors— then he could become the first male star to make a mark in the Hindi market. He definitely seems to be interested in going Pan-India, has excellent screen presence and he has a bi-lingual film Saaho that is being on a big budget and shot simultaneously in Telugu, Tamil and Hindi. As for the Khans, they’ll largely remain unaffected by Bahubali, but the pressure of box office will be there. They’ll have to take things to the next level now, especially Salman because he is the biggest we have when it comes to box office initial – especially at smaller centres. Q. Do you think with the huge appreciation and love baahubali 2 is getting throughout the world, it will create more recognition for indian films in overseas market in future? A. Unlikely. It’s still the Indian audience that are watching Bahubali. Q. Who is more important for the industry… Akshay or Aamir? As Aamir keep the bar getting higher every time while Akshay keeps the wheel turning for everyone involved on a regular basis? Your take A. Both. Aamir films will be treasured and watched for years – it’ll be watched by the future generation as some of the best films of the current decade. Most of us have only watched a select few films from the 70s and the most watched would be Sholay, Amar Akbar Anthony and a few others. Those few would be 3 Idiots, Dangal, Lagaan etc. But for exhibitors, definitely Akshay Kumar. Q. Indicine I am a die hard Srk fan and want to write an open letter to him as a miniscule effort in my capacity, will you be kind enough to publish it? A. Sure. Please mail your article to indicineteam at gmail dot com. Some short answers… Q. Do you really think Bahubali’s storm at box office is because of Prabhas? According to so many people’s perception after Bahubali-2 released, Prabhas is ahead of Bollywood big stars like khans, AK, HR. What is your take in this claimed? Don’t you think the same success will achieved even anyone of these Telugu stars either Mahesh or Pawan Kalyan were cast in the Bahubali? A. Not true. Bahubali is not about star power, but the power of people’s love for the first film. We’ll have to wait and see how successful he will be with his next few films, but it would be a surprise if it manages to even open at 20% of Bahubali 2. Q. Who is a bigger superstar among these actors of their time, Dilip Kumar, Rajesh Khanna, Dharmendra, Amitabh Bachchan or Vinod Khanna. A. Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan were the biggest of the names you mentioned. [advert] Q. How come Bahubali earn so much on single day when you yourself said once that the total capacity of Indian theatres is max 60 crores if they run full? Please explain. A. Please don’t misquote us. We never said the max All-India limit is 60 crore. We said 60-65 crore is probably the limit of the Hindi market at full capacity, but even that depends on ticket prices etc. Below is the answer in the QnA two weeks ago: “It depends on a lot of factors like ticket prices, release size etc. For a Salman Khan release, at full capacity we could probably get to 60-65 crore net on a single day – if all shows are house full. Baahubali 2 will certainly challenge this because it’ll perform across all markets – Hindi and single-screen dominated Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada markets too. The release size is going to be much bigger than the biggest of Hindi releases too, so the upper limit is a lot higher.” 20 questions have been answered. 10 more answers will be added to this page at 10:45PM – Stay tuned. Q. What is real potential of India box office according to you? A. There’s plenty of potential for growth in India, we do not even have theatres at several ’Tier 2 and 3’ cities. But it’s about justifying the high price of tickets and giving the audience a big-screen experience. Like we already mentioned, not even 2.5% of the population is watching the biggest of Hindi films in theatres. The emphasis should be on making films that appeal to ‘Pan India’ audience, once that happens and the footfalls increase, the number of screens will also increase – which will also increase the collections and reduce the over-dependence on stars. Q. Give more insight about Ring vs Toilet clash A. We’ve already spoken in detail about the clash. Click here to read the article. We can only add more once the trailers are out. Q. How is the WOM for bahubali 2? Good or excellent? A. Not as good as the first part, but certainly very good. A clearer picture on the word-of-mouth will emerge in the next 2 days. Q. Which SRK film is coming between The Ring and dwarf ? Will dwarf movie be single release of him in 2018 ? A. The ‘Dwarf’ film is big film that goes on floors soon. He probably won’t have any release in between – unless SRK signs a quick film that can be wrapped up in 2-3 months. Q. Will Half girlfriend collection be affected due to Bahubali 2 ;especially as a lot of cinegoers have spent a lot of money on baahubali 2, will they be willing to spend again on half girlfriend in 15-20 days time? A. It’s difficult to answer such questions. A 3 week gap is big enough to not have much of an impact on film business. Having said that – there could be a small impact, because a majority of audience have already spent big money on Bahubali tickets – prices of which were hiked. How big an impact depends on Half Girlfriend – if the movie is good, the impact will be limited. If the content isn’t upto the mark and the movie fails, the blame could go on Bahubali 2 releasing so close and doing so well. Q. Will 2.0 open massive? Because this is the only big film of Akshay Kumar after many years so don’t you think it’ll perform extremely well both in metros and mass center? A. 2.0 will open in the core markets because of Rajnikanth. So the credit can only go to Akshay Kumar if the film manages a bumper opening in the North. Only that will show his real value, although Rajnikanth films are performing much better than before even in some of the Hindi markets. It would’ve been a different story altogether had it been a Rajnikanth – Salman film. That would’ve really made it insanely huge all over and maybe even challenged Bahubali 2. Akshay has done big films – Brothers, QUATIMD and even Housefull 3 – none of them were even close to be classified as ‘Bumper’ or ‘Record Breaking’. Q. Am a huge follower of this website but i wonder why there is so less coverage on this website for Baahubali 2? When Sultan released there used to be about 2-3 articles per day. A. Sultan is a Hindi film, Bahubali 2 isn’t. Q. U always say that there will be a drop on Saturday compared to Friday. Why is it so because Saturday is a holiday for most of the mnc’s. Even govt offices are closed so actually it should always be more unless movie is outrightly rejected. Your views A. Not true. Saturday is not a universal holiday and secondly, when it comes to big films – especially those that are targeted at mass centres – a drop on Saturday is normal. In South, most films drop on Saturday. It’s a different story with multiplex films, those peak on Saturday night and hence the trend is upwards from Friday to Saturday. Q. What is Hrithik Roshan doing now? Is he in a mood to do movies or not? A. No clue. Maybe reading scripts or taking a break. Q. Is Mahabharata with 1000 crore budget really happening or it’s just rumour? A. Yes, there are reports of UAE businessman investing in a feature film which is based on Randamoozham – which tells the story of Mahabharatha through the eyes of Bheema. It’s said to be directed by Shrikumar Menon. It’ll be made in different languages. But all this has only been announced – Mohanlal has also confirmed that he’ll be playing Bheema and there are reports that they want Hrithik as Krishna. We’ll wait till the film goes on floors – because such projects can so easily fall through. That’s the end of QnA. As expected, more questions were on Bahubali 2 this week and we tried to answer most of them. Thank you for joining us.

The increasing external threat for the Hindi Film Industry

The footfalls of Hindi Films in the last couple of years has declined. Around 33 crore tickets were sold in 2013, which dropped to 32 crore in 2014 and went down further in the last two years with Hindi films selling just 30 crore tickets in 2015 and 2016. A drop of 10% from 2013 to 2016 is quite significant – more so with the increase in the number of multiplex screens across the country.

Noor Box Office Collection Update: Crashes on Monday

Sonakshi Sinha’s Noor has been rejected by the audience, as the business of the film has come crashing down on Monday. The drop in business is more than 50% from Monday, which is acceptable for a film that gets a strong initial – but a poor for a film like Noor which was extremely dull on its first day itself.
