The inauguration of Mumbai’s first general hospital was a star-studded event. Bollywood actors like Amitabh Bachchan, Aamir Khan, Shahrukh Khan and Hrithik Roshan were seated in the front row along with cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, Mahendra Singh Dhoni and actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. Other stars like Kareena Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan, filmmaker Karan Johar were in the second row.

UPDATE 1AM on Saturday: Happy New Year has collected around 36 crore including all versions on Saturday. Happy New Year is on a historic run at the box office, as the morning shows on Saturday are only about 10-20% lower compared to yesterday at most multiplex centres that we have been tracking. Noon shows have picked up, most shows are running to capacity and the gap between Friday and Saturday business should narrow towards the end of the day.

Happy New Year has recorded the highest single-day collections at around 46 of the 52 centres that we have received collections from so far. As per early estimates, the film has collected around Rs 39 crore on its first day at the box office, including business from regional versions like Tamil and Telugu – which is a record for the highest opening day collections ever. The film could challenge the highest collections first day collections in Rajasthan circuit even though the newly introduced entertainment tax has come into effect from August 1st (After first week of Kick, before Singham Returns).

Happy New Year has taken the best opening for a film released in 2014. The occupancy for the morning shows was better than other big openers like Singham Returns, Kick and Bang Bang. Happy New Year was also about 10-15% better than the second best opening this year.

The early morning reports suggest that most shows held as early as 7 in the morning are packed to capacity. The opening that Happy New Year has taken is on-par with expectations from a Shahrukh Khan Diwali release and the advance booking for the rest of the day is incredible too.
