Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi marks the return of Aditya Chopra as a director after 8 years. His last movie Mohabbatein did well at the box-office, but it isDDLJ that continues to make news a decade after its release (its still running in a theatre in Mumbai). The expecations are quite high. Can Aditya Chopra recreate the magic of DDLJ, once again, with Shahrukh Khan in the lead?
Like last year’s Om Shanti Om, SRK has a new heroine, who again like Deepika Padukone, appears slightly taller than him.
Surprisingly unlike most Aditya Chopra movies, there are just 4 characters in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi; Surinder Sahni – Raj (both SRK), Taani (Anushka Sharma) and Bobby (Vinay Pathak). Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi is a simple film about a couple whose marriage turns from a compromise to one made in heaven, by Rab himself!
Surinder Sahni is a simpleton working for Punjab Powers with a personality of a nerd. At the wedding of his college professors daughter he falls head over heals in love at first with the bride, the beautiful and very bubbly girl Taani. Just when the air of happiness and celebration reached its peak, the news about the accident of the groom and his entire family puts everything to lull. Surinder being the most favorite and admired student of the professor takes the responsibility of taking care of Taani and ties the nuptial bond with her. The rest of the story tells us about the extent to which Surinder goes to bring back the liveliness and happiness in the life of his lady love. It’s about how he wins his share of love compromising yet taking his stand for the man he is.
There are 2 major negatives and flaws in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi
1) The length! Its more than 2 hours 40 mins long for a movie, which preferabbly should not have exceeded 2 hours. A bunch of unnecessary scenes, just to add masala, to an otherwise simple movie is disappointing. Also the movie is a stretch, with the pace being painfully slow at times.
2) The story! How can a newly married woman, who promises to be a good wife, fall in love with her dance partner? Okay, such things do happen when the marriage has no hold. But then the Raj – Taani love story is far from convincing and just doesnt strike the right chord. When a love story involves a married lady, who is cheating on her husband, the build up and the impact has to be tad bit more.
And how in the world does Taani not recognise Raj as her husband? With minimal changes in looks which included the removal of his moustache, specs and a change in hairstyle. The face and voice was the same, wasnt it?
The dialogues are great. Sets are adequate, simple and perfect for a movie like Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. The music is average. Haule Haule and the title track are good. Dance Pe Chance has been choreographed well. Rest are okay.
SRK’s character of Surinder Sahni is something most people would identify with. A simple common man, who goes through his daily routine and 9 to 5 working life. Acting wise, SRK has put in a lot of effort into this role and it shows. The mannerisms are funny, overall good performance.
Then comes the Raj makeover and SRK starts perfecting his hamming skills. The over the top character is strictly for SRK fans. Others could find it irritating.
Anushka Sharma is brilliant in a highly refreshing performance. Her expressions and dance stands out. A huge contender for the best debut award this year. Vinay Pathak is fine.
Overall, the story and the execution is a let down. The performances are decent and the movie sure has some light moments that would make you smile and laugh. At the all important box-office, the opening has been suprisingly not upto expectations for such a huge film. It should pick up over the weekend. Going past the Week 1 figures of either Singh Is King or Om Shanti Om seems highly unlikely.

Other notes: Kajol, Rani Mukherjee, Lara Dutta, Bipasha Basu and Preity Zinta.. all have special apperances in a song. The theatre was half full for the morning show and the audience reaction was decent. They seemed to love the scene wherein SRK keeps a rose along with his phone number, for his newly married wife.

salaam to all, RNBDJ is my one of the most fabulous experience. its damn pretty good movie. sahahrukhs performance is awesome and sonam done well. i think that its just because of mumbai attacks that movie does not score a high goal at boxoffice otherwise its none less than a very big hit. i loveee this movie

When I said I miss Lata in Yash Raj films, I was being nostalgic because Yash Raj films always had the sweetest and most melodious music which is a feature conspicuously missing in present day Yash Raj films. Anyway, you have no right to utter a single word against Lata or Asha. Do not even bring their names to your lips. Both are legends, gifts from God and will remain immortal through their legacy of beautiful melodies. I am shocked to have read such contemptuous comments about them. Aging is not a crime and even today their voices are more superior and sweeter than those of Alka, Kavita, Sunidhi, Shreya etc. You are blinded by your cradle-snatching obsessiveness over SRK, to the extent that you can even insult artists like Lata who are treasures of our motherland. If I remember correctly, you were the most vocal about Singh is King being a lousy film despite its box office success, so why have you now changed colours with Rab Ne Banadhi Jodi? How can you say it is a good film because it has earned 90 crores?
I still firmly maintain that RNBJ is a mediocre film. Even Jane tu jane na with new stars was better acted. SRK’s acting talent has always been mediocre. In your heart you know this, Fathiya, that is why you chose to pick on Lata over everything else from my comment and ofcourse we all know that you will never be able to speak a single good word about any other actor apart from SRK, which makes you an extremely biased contributor.

Indeed I was angry, Fathiya. Lata is a superior singer and will remain so till her last breath. And with such treasures one must learn to be diplomatic. As it is, Lata herself does not agree to sing these days which in itself shows her greatness. She sang for Veer Zara out of loyalty for Yash Chopra and we should respect that. She really suited Kajol in DDLJ,Madhuri in DTPH and Ash in Mohabatein. These actresses have sweet diction. Preity has a hoarse voice. Lata’s age has nothing to do with her singing not suiting Preity onscreen. Lata’s songs also did not suit Rani in MDK because Rani also has a harsh voice. Lata is Lata and will remain evergreen.
People on this site who use bad language against anyone (monkey, bastard etc) have cheap characters and low upbringing. Responding to them would be lowering one’s dignity and that is exactly what you are doing. They are best ignored.
SRK is King of Bollywood out of pure luck, not merit. From Baazigar right upto RNBJ there has not been much change in SRK’s acting. Some of his films have been good because of plots, music and witty dialogues but his acting has always been mediocre. I cannot admire a person and become his fan when he has succeeded out of luck (and a strong PR team and devious politiking) and not merit. Maybe you can but I cannot. Dilip Kumar, BigB, Rajesh Khanna, Amir Khan and Hrithik Roshan are to be admired. They have worked hard and succeeded out of merit. Above all, they have been humble enough to recognise their weaknesses and limitations and accepted roles accordingly. This is to be admired.
Unlike SRK who accepted to feature in a dance competition, when he cant dance Latino. That is pure arrogance. His acting as Raj was also unsuitable for a man of his age, and therefore irritating.
The film was not bad, it was enjoyable.BUT IT CERTAINLY NOT FLAWLESS.

Business was excellent all over. The business on Saturday compared to last Saturday is much better than Friday compared to Friday.
Sunday should be another rock steady day similar to Saturday as these are the days families venture out to the cinemas and it is the family audience which is patronising Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. The weekend business is heading for a 14 crore nett taking the film to 55 crore nett for 10 days.
Rs. 115 crores worldwide in its 10 days.
The total collections for Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi in India are around Rs. 55 crores net (i.e. gross collections of Rs. 85 crores). The total gross collections for all overseas markets are over $6 Million (i.e. around Rs. 30 crores).

Middle East girls do act, we have Egyptian movies ( I don’t watch them coz I don’t like Arabic movies, I’m not an Arab) I watch Iranian movies as I’m a Persian, and Iranian movies r different as in Iran, women aren’t allowed to showup without a veil, uncovered hair, and they’ve to cover their body and look decent, kissing, touching is not allowed in Iran, therefore Iranian directors & prodccuers concentrate only on the story and they have many good movies.. so if u think that no one would make good movies except bollywood and hollywood, so u r WRONG Yamani..
Watch an old movie which called “The Colour of Paradise” the best Iranian movie which I saw ( and I also mentioned it on Aamir Khan’s blog, if bollywood would consider this movie and do a remake) it’s about a blind little boy who’s abandoned by his poor father for the sake of marriage. This movie makes u cry and the boy is even a better actor than Darsheel.. the way he weeped in the movie bleeds your heart.. watch it and then u know that other countries in this world also do some great movies, not only bollywood.!

First thing first, Regarding the comments of
FAATHIYA: Indeed rab ne is a good movie, I watched it the very first day, I love shahrukh bhai, one big reason behind this is he has done his mass communication course from my college Jamia and I have seen him and heard about him from my elders that he was a very good man and was very down to earth. He rose from the scratch on his own. You are also right that muslims don’t act in movies as it is a sin but please remember watching it is also a sin so don’t bring such comments in here. As far as Akshay kumar is concerned he is also a very good actor. Again he has also rose from the scratch. For his first movie he was given Rs. 75 indian, from there to this day he has grown alot. So don’t do comparision b/t him and shahrukh, they are good in there own respective class. I haven’t completely read all the comments but if you have commented against Indians as a whole then such kind of comments are disturbing and in no way that can be allowed. But reading ur comments for Bobby it seems they were not meant for all. Finally one more thing loving someone doesn’t mean you have to prove him right or wrong or do anything, it is about the very fact that you keep on loving him even if others say bad about him and it is true for every one that A PERSON CANNOT MAKE EVERYONE HAPPY, IF HE DOES THEN HE IS A HYPOCRITE. Same goes with shahrukh bhai undoubtedly he is one of the greatest actors ever in the industry and is a legend, even if anyone says good about him or bad he will remain the same(insha-Allah). And last but not the least middle east people are indeed very beautiful I have met few and they are nice not only in looks but in talk also.

I’m an Indian and PROUD to be one, if you have problem with fathiya then use bad words for her, why the whole community. I never admired Shahrukh coz he is Indian.. I admired him as a character, whether he’s indian, persian, arab, jew, christian.. Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi has emerged the biggest hit of the year with excellent business on its second Saturday and extraordinary business on its second Sunday. In fact the business on the second Sunday was on par with its business on its first day of over 7 crore.
The business on Sunday was just 25-30% lower than its extraordinary first Sunday. The business of Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi is around 15-16 crore over its second weekend taking its ten day total to 56-57 crore. The second week should add another 5-6 crore until Ghajini arrives on Thursday and if Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi can perform well at the boxoffice from thereon then it could touch 80 crore nett business.
