Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi marks the return of Aditya Chopra as a director after 8 years. His last movie Mohabbatein did well at the box-office, but it isDDLJ that continues to make news a decade after its release (its still running in a theatre in Mumbai). The expecations are quite high. Can Aditya Chopra recreate the magic of DDLJ, once again, with Shahrukh Khan in the lead?
Like last year’s Om Shanti Om, SRK has a new heroine, who again like Deepika Padukone, appears slightly taller than him.
Surprisingly unlike most Aditya Chopra movies, there are just 4 characters in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi; Surinder Sahni – Raj (both SRK), Taani (Anushka Sharma) and Bobby (Vinay Pathak). Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi is a simple film about a couple whose marriage turns from a compromise to one made in heaven, by Rab himself!
Surinder Sahni is a simpleton working for Punjab Powers with a personality of a nerd. At the wedding of his college professors daughter he falls head over heals in love at first with the bride, the beautiful and very bubbly girl Taani. Just when the air of happiness and celebration reached its peak, the news about the accident of the groom and his entire family puts everything to lull. Surinder being the most favorite and admired student of the professor takes the responsibility of taking care of Taani and ties the nuptial bond with her. The rest of the story tells us about the extent to which Surinder goes to bring back the liveliness and happiness in the life of his lady love. It’s about how he wins his share of love compromising yet taking his stand for the man he is.
There are 2 major negatives and flaws in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi
1) The length! Its more than 2 hours 40 mins long for a movie, which preferabbly should not have exceeded 2 hours. A bunch of unnecessary scenes, just to add masala, to an otherwise simple movie is disappointing. Also the movie is a stretch, with the pace being painfully slow at times.
2) The story! How can a newly married woman, who promises to be a good wife, fall in love with her dance partner? Okay, such things do happen when the marriage has no hold. But then the Raj – Taani love story is far from convincing and just doesnt strike the right chord. When a love story involves a married lady, who is cheating on her husband, the build up and the impact has to be tad bit more.
And how in the world does Taani not recognise Raj as her husband? With minimal changes in looks which included the removal of his moustache, specs and a change in hairstyle. The face and voice was the same, wasnt it?
The dialogues are great. Sets are adequate, simple and perfect for a movie like Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. The music is average. Haule Haule and the title track are good. Dance Pe Chance has been choreographed well. Rest are okay.
SRK’s character of Surinder Sahni is something most people would identify with. A simple common man, who goes through his daily routine and 9 to 5 working life. Acting wise, SRK has put in a lot of effort into this role and it shows. The mannerisms are funny, overall good performance.
Then comes the Raj makeover and SRK starts perfecting his hamming skills. The over the top character is strictly for SRK fans. Others could find it irritating.
Anushka Sharma is brilliant in a highly refreshing performance. Her expressions and dance stands out. A huge contender for the best debut award this year. Vinay Pathak is fine.
Overall, the story and the execution is a let down. The performances are decent and the movie sure has some light moments that would make you smile and laugh. At the all important box-office, the opening has been suprisingly not upto expectations for such a huge film. It should pick up over the weekend. Going past the Week 1 figures of either Singh Is King or Om Shanti Om seems highly unlikely.

Other notes: Kajol, Rani Mukherjee, Lara Dutta, Bipasha Basu and Preity Zinta.. all have special apperances in a song. The theatre was half full for the morning show and the audience reaction was decent. They seemed to love the scene wherein SRK keeps a rose along with his phone number, for his newly married wife.
THE MOVIE IS STRICTLY AVERAGE !!! THERE IS NOTHING SPECIAL ABOUT THE MOVIE AT ALL.
ITS NO BIG DEAL.
THE MOVIE STARTS OFF REALLY WELL, BUT THEN IT LOSES ITS CHARM AS THE MOVIE PROGRESSES. IT BECOMES VERY BORING AND PREDICTABLE – EXCEPT FOR CERTAIN SCENES WHICH MAKE YOU LAUGH.
SHAH RUKH KHANS PERFORMANCE AS THE DOUBLE CHARACTER IS REALLY OVER THE TOP AND VERY IRRITATING. HE SEEMS TO BE VERY PISSED OFF WITH THE PART IN THE FILM, AND COMES ACROSS AS OFFPUTTING.
THE FILM IS AN AVERAGE FILM, AND IF IT WASN’T FOR SHAH RUKH KHAN IN THE LEAD, THE FILM WOULD HAVE FLOPPED AT THE BOX OFFICE.
THE ONLY REASON WHY THE FILM HAS DONE WELL SO FAR IS BECAUSE PEOPLE WANT TO GO AND SEE A SHAH RUKH KHAN FILM NO MATTER WHAT THE FILM IS LIKE – ESPECIALLY IF IT IS THE SHAH RUKH KHAN / ADITYA CHOPRA COMBO. SEEING A SHAH RUKH KHAN FILM IS AN EVENT FOR MOST PEOPLE, SO THE FILM BECOMES A HIT BY DEFAULT.
FOR ME, THE FILM WAS A LET DOWN AS I EXPECTED MORE FROM SHAH RUKH AND ADITYA CHOPRA. IT IS AN AVERAGE FILM AND PAISA VASOOL IF ANYTHING.
I WOULD ONLY RECOMMEND PEOPLE TO GO AND SEE IT IF YOU HAVE ABSOLUTELY NOTHING BETTER TO DO, AND WANT TO JUST PASS TIME AT A CINEMA. UNLESS YOU ARE A DIE HARD SHAH RUKH KHAN FAN, I WOULD WAIT UNTIL THE DVD OR SATELLITE RELEASE AND THEN WATCH THE FILM.
YOUR BETTER OFF STAYING AT HOME AND WATCHING PAST HITS SUCH AS ddlj, mohabbatein, or dil to paagal hai. OR EVEN THE LESS WELL KNOWN SHAH RUKH KHAN FILM SUCH AS kabhie haan kabhie naan WHICH YOU WILL FIND MORE ENJOYABLE AND ENTERTAINING.

Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi has done business of around 67 crore nett in 13 days. The second week has been rock steady until the release of Ghajini today as collections fell due to much lower screenings.
The film is the biggest hit of 2008 and the first universal blockbuster of the year. The film is the biggest hit in every circuit of India apart from Delhi/UP, East Punjab, Bihar and Rajasthan but of course things may change with the release of Ghajini.

It all depends upon in what mindset the person watches the movie, i personally think, that RNBDJ was a worth of watch, although i was a little disappointed with the content of the movie, but 1 thing made all the difference in the world, i.e. the presence of our beloved King Khan. It will go on to be a superhit if not blockbuster..

RNBDJ was not a good movie, only srk star power made this movie a hit. Also people stop calling srk by king Khan because he is not the king of bollywood, AKSHAY KUMAR is and the true KING KHAN is AMIR KHAN. “GHAJINI” just killed RNBDJ in every way.

I’d love rating something below 1 out of 10!! Its just a stupid movie with a script full of flaws, not worth watching. wondering why a talented actor like Sharukh cant be choosy! The story doesnt have any proper base and the so called ‘love’ theme is not at ll realistic. the quality of bollywood films is stepping down, theres only very few directors who come out of this ‘unrealistic’ pool and make their mind for films like ‘a wednesday’. why is it that they shoot films only somewhere outside India and give importance to only ‘crappy love’ and glamour? do you guys think we’re to theatre just to see actress’ stripping and showing off nudity? isnt there anyone out there who can write a realistic story/script for common man? hm, only hope is some ‘wednesday’s and ‘tare zameen par’s in the coming years!!

Talha Rauf: Hi.. well I can’t say that the 2 movies are equal ( and I never care about the box office collections) as 3 or 4 crores more or less would never make any movie better or worst.
They’re two different movies, completely different in the script, so how can we say that they are equal. They are both good, but the evaluation and to think which one is better must be based on the flaws in the 2 movie.. which one got less flaws, and I think that RBNDJ is a flawless movie.. the only flaw or let me say the only thing which I felt that the director could’ve done it better is Shahrukh’s wig.. I didn’t like his wig as Surinder.. It didn’t look natural and the director could’ve done for shahrukh a hairstyle with a better spect. on his face other than wearing this wig and with a funny glasses ( probably he wanted him to look funny therefore he used that wig and the thick glasses.
Rabne has less flaws ( if other ppl here would think that there’re are more flaws, it’s up to them) but Ghaajini is (full) of flaws ( just read my review under the movie review as well as other commentator’s reviews) and then decide for yourself.
