Is MNIK worth the media coverage its getting?

Nothing against Shahrukh Khan or Karan Johar here. But watching every news channel and newspaper give My Name Is Khan national importance, is hard to digest. Even now with the film having released across all multiplexes in India, the topic of discussion and debate continues to be the film.

Surely there are bigger problems in the country, that deserve more coverage and importance, don’t you think?

Also would other actors get the same backing from the media, the government and not to mention the industry, as MNIK has?

1) When Aamir Khan’s Fanna was banned in Gujarat, not many stood up for the actor, least the media. The producers (Yashraj) lost a lot of money.

2) Hrithik Roshan’s last film Jodha Akbar too was banned in Rajasthan, later in Madhya Pradesh and eventually in UP. Where was the government, the media? Why wasn’t the same security and assurance provided to the film and its makers? The film lost 6 – 8 crores, no less.

All we are trying to say here is, irrespective of how big / small the film is, irrespective of who the lead star is, every film that is passed by the censor board should witness a smooth release all over.

  • I think it is getting way too much attention. While I was watching Zee News on Friday I heard stories that only included MNIK & SRK for 10 mins straight, which really got me furious. I wanted to hear other news but it was all about the whole Shiv Sena and MNIK. Anyways wish good luck to MNIK, its a sweet film. Its also funny in parts.

  • Now when the truth has come out then it’s false. Ok i can feel ur feelings guys. I feel so sorry for u. Comeon , be strong & accept the truth.

  • hahaha…yu guys fighting over a movie and an actor like monkeys …lolzzz!!!!

anyways.. the movie is not even among top #5 in North American box office. why the hell yur media backin up this movie that much.. no clue :S.

    btw chck http://www.boxofficemojo.com/
and do check rottentomatoes.. movie is not even reviewed by single reviewer..hahaha.. whr the hell is it gettin RAVE reviews????

and cut that BERLIN crap.. its a film festival and movie maniacs like yuz exist everywhere in the world. i bet all the curries were lined up thr to watch this shitload of crap..hahaha..

btw my first hand experience.. after watchin this one..im goin further and further away frm bollywood.

yur media makes unnecessary noise. i think at best this movie is just among top bollywood #5 this year.. period.

btw.. where i watched this movie.. i didnt find a single WHITE or NON-INDIAN watchin this movie.. I WONDER WHERE YOUR MEDIA GETS ALL THESE STORIES..lol.

    my review:
its horrible version of Forest Gump, loud music thrown in, awful performances, wanna-be direction and a shallow vision.

the only point I see is: they wanted to make a movie to WIN oscar and earn in $$$ . so they chose 9/11

k cool. then picked the most sensitive topic .. Racism!!.. i mean why the hell would you wanna make movie on a tragedy that took place in some other land and your ppl have less to do with..JUST THINK.

then they roped in FOX.. since Fox is buyin out all the local production houses all over the world..

and then MR SRK stirrin up the controversy to promote his movie, overlooking his own countries REPUTATION and disregarding its effect on ppl livin in abroad… well we all knw, we indians are selfish and pull each other down so he didnt do any worse. anyways..

i feel so good when i come here..every now and then .. see you guys makin a fkiin mockery outta yurself hahaha.. i still cant get it.. y are yuz..so obsessed with movie stars?????? srsly..like they are god???

i think yu recently had a bomb blast in some state.. its pitty that no one is discussin that .. wow!!

  • No. 5 was Fox’s “My Name Is Khan,” a 9/11-related drama about a Mumbai Muslim (played by Bollywood’s Shah Rukh Khan) with asperger’s detained at LAX airport after action suspiciously. The Fox International local production opened No. 1 in India ($9.2 million from 1,450 screens) and generated an overall weekend tally of $14.2 million from 1,572 screens in seven markets. Pound for pound, a strong opening splash generating more than $9,000 per screen.

    The numbers speak for themselves:
to sum up, roughly 66 crore in ONLY 7 markets over the weekend, therefore about 35 markets still unnacounted for over the weekend.

  • According to screen daily: (sorry cannot post link have been banned I believe from doing so)

My name is Khan has grossed £957, 300 in the UK on first 3 days. (around 7 crore)

Acrroding to the same article, it has also made $1.1 million in the UAE (around 5 crore)

  • common yaar SAMI.
accept the truth and stop calling srk the badshah.
even if mnik has grossed 40cr or 50 cr or 60 cr or even 85 cr its way behind 3 idiots which grossed 93cr over the weekand worldwide.
acc to BOI the nett weekand collections are 29.50 cr.this is also way behind 3 idiots which netted 40 cr.
mnik has not breaken even ghajiji’s record
cool down yaar sami and take a chill bil.
AAMIR KHAN is the real badshah of bollywood

  • AS per box office mojo, mnik lags 3i as far as us box office is concerned.
No offence to srk fans, he is one of the finest actors we have, but, leave aside india, mnik probably can not break 3i record overseas. Check the below mentioned below link –

    http://indiablogs.searchindia.com/2010/02/14/my-name-is-khan-box-office-average-gross-less-than-3-idiots/

And consider box office figures only, i do not agree with the other things written in the article.

  • Aamir and Salman are real badshah of Bollywood. Media and Critics have backing for SRK films. MNIK is a just an Average film at boxoffice. Aamir and Salman gives Block Buster Hits even media and critics gives 1 or 2 star for their films. Jai Ho Aamir,Salman and Akshay.

  • mNik will not even be in Top ten after one week. SRK, Yash Chopra’s, Johars gets backing from Media and Critics always, because Media and critics get payment from SRK and Johars. Indian critics are shame, shame, Shame less. They give wrong ciritics and wrong reports.

  • MNIK weekend collections
    29.5 cr in india
    source boxofficeindia.com

    hahahaha
my prediction 30 cr weekend 50 cr 1st week is true.
my all predictions are true now.

  • Guys

My name is Khan has grossed 97 crore over the weekend, has broken the record of 3 idiots over the weekend according to my sources. Waiting for proof of this and will post it.

  • nauman my prediction are 100% better than you.

1-you predict 10cr on friday even afterr considering mumbai debacle.
my prediction was 8-9cr. spot on.

2-i predicted much before you when i gave indicine a slap on their face when they say more than 12cr saturday just look at my accuracy i have predicted a liitele lesss than 10cr and again spot on.

so you might be btter at reviews but not in box office prdiction

  • yaar Nitesh ab 1 cr ke liye larai kare ga ???
    overall i said 28-30 cr 1st weekend , and it is 29.5
for 1st week my prediction was 52-54 cr . lets see

  • @ Aditya

Did you read te article about My name is khan being globally 5th, it generated 66 crore from only 7 markets, MNIK released in 45 countries, therefore it will break wordlwide weekend records. Wait and watch.

for a matter of fact, im not a SRK fanboy, im only doing what im good at, reporting true, sourcable news.

  • sami now believe it or not it will not break the record of ghajini so leave 3idiots alone.

now you will again give same point that veer do avg business but remember the ratings it gets the worst possible reviews but mnik get 5stars from most of the reviewers but even after that the business is coming from metro cities mostly this show that though the collection will be more but the popularity of srk acroos india has fallen sharply and aamir and salman are more popular. though film may do life time business of 85-90cr if it sustains very well on weekdays but otherwise 74-78cr

indicine this is for you now accept that you dont have the required source to predict by what source you say that sat collectons are above 11-12cr . wat a joke

  • @ nitesh

Im talking about WORLDWIDE gross over the weekend

Dp you think im claiming about India? it has grossed 29 crore in india, no record broken there.
Wordwide it is believed to have grossed about 95 crore pver wweekend, 3 idiots took 93 crore WORLDWIDE.

  • i am talking about indian market infact a good news for srk fans mnik break oversses record

Box Office: Kurban 2. MNIK embarks on a Monday crash pattern, set to flop
    Monday, February 15, 2010

As expected, boosted by the Pakistani/mideast populations, My Name is Khan got the initial response overseas but not Hollywood-challenging to the tune of $1.8 mil in USA in gross where they are incidentally celebrating the President’s day weekend. But more importantly, the post-release reports neither there in America nor especially in the mainland India are painting a good sign for the Shahrukh Khan-Kajol film in the days to come.

Across the country, the post-release reports are flat out mixed to very poor, belying the 5 and occassionally even 5.5 star scale-exceeding ratings that were relayed ahead of the release in Indian media. This incidentally had happened with Kurbaan too. Quite the contrary are the public reports of this movie.

Infact when it’s all said and done, Karan Johar and Shahrukh Khan may actually thank Shiv Sena for creating enough controversy for the film to manage a respectable collection in the opening weekend in the metros atleast.

Because the actual box office pattern for MNIK in India went like this:

  • This is for all SRK fans & other actor fans

    IBOSNETWORK.COM

On Friday the film could not release as planned in Maharashtra, North Karnataka, parts of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Orissa and even a couple places in Delhi-UP. It lost out in major centers like Pune, Nasik altogether. In Mumbai, India’s biggest center where it was to release on over 105 theaters, when it released on afternoon shows it was in only handful of multiplexes (Fun republic etc.), MNIK took to to 70-75% occupancies which was below expectation considering the media frenzy. In the interiors as reported occupancies were dismal, in the tune of 25-30% (even lesser in many cases).

On Saturday, the film did release in about 49 halls in Mumbai and in afternoon in Pune, this continued through Saturday evening till the terror blasts shook Pune putting Pune back to square one. Nonetheless Saturday and Sunday saw pickups for the film recording 80-95% collections in majority of multiplexes across the board which is quite good.

But after the curiosity triggered by the various controversies, the merits of the film as a box office power have to take over, and this is where the Karan Johar-Shahrukh Khan-Kajol film is unable to stand the test. The cracks for the film started around Sunday night shows, even as most of Sunday was advance booked on Saturday itself.

  • This is for all SRK fans & other actor fans

    IBOSNETWORK.COM

But Monday tends to be a make or break situation for any film, regardless of controversy or not. The worst fear for MNIK apart from the tensions of Friday would have been the much feared Monday crash, and unfortunately for the actor now, that is indeed happening as Monday morning opened nationally to poor to dismal response compared to Friday which wasn’t all that to begin with, and advance for Monday night is not showing much hope. In some multiplexes where Sunday went 85-90%. Monday is looking to end up doing just 8-9% (multiplexes, not single screens). On the other hand, Chandan cinema, a single screener in Mumbai for example maybe lucky to get 50 tickets sold against its capacity of around 1000 on Monday shows.

The situation is somewhat better in Hyderabad and Delhi which has a sizeable muslim population but it may not hold there either as in the nearby regions have gone down. Same in Jaipur, Kanpur, Ahmedabad etc.

The Karan Johar film never had much of a chance in the interiors of India and can already be dubbed a flop there. At this point, the 100 crore Fox Star Studios venture which has been billed as followup to Slumdog Millionaire, needs over 250+ crore gross revenues; but it is going to end up coming up short and lose by a long distance.
