Nothing against Shahrukh Khan or Karan Johar here. But watching every news channel and newspaper give My Name Is Khan national importance, is hard to digest. Even now with the film having released across all multiplexes in India, the topic of discussion and debate continues to be the film.
Surely there are bigger problems in the country, that deserve more coverage and importance, don’t you think?
Also would other actors get the same backing from the media, the government and not to mention the industry, as MNIK has?
1) When Aamir Khan’s Fanna was banned in Gujarat, not many stood up for the actor, least the media. The producers (Yashraj) lost a lot of money.
2) Hrithik Roshan’s last film Jodha Akbar too was banned in Rajasthan, later in Madhya Pradesh and eventually in UP. Where was the government, the media? Why wasn’t the same security and assurance provided to the film and its makers? The film lost 6 – 8 crores, no less.
All we are trying to say here is, irrespective of how big / small the film is, irrespective of who the lead star is, every film that is passed by the censor board should witness a smooth release all over.
Former superstar Shahrukh ‘Pakistan is a great neighbor’ Khan’s My Name is Khan has had a decent run at the U.S. box office.
But not as good as Bollywood’s new King Khan Aamir Khan’s 3 Idiots.
Former King Khan SRK’s My Name is Khan had an opening gross of $1.86 million for the February 12-14, 2010 three-day weekend, according to Box Office Mojo estimates.
Aamir Khan’s 3 Idiots had an opening gross of $2.15 million for the five-day weekend.

Since it doesn’t make sense to compare the opening gross for a three-day weekend film (My Name is Khan) to a five-day weekend film (3 Idiots), let us look at the average gross numbers, which should help us to compare the performance of the two films.
Here, Aamir Khan’s 3 Idiots is the clear winner with an average gross of $18,060 while former superstar Shahrukh Khan’s My Name is Khan could muster an average gross of only $15,500.
Aamir Khan’s Ghajini (five-day weekend) also had a higher average gross of $16,717.
Allah Likely Helped
Our hypothesis is that My Name is Khan would have pulled in lower numbers if Allah’s minions on Earth, i.e. Muslims, had not come out in large numbers to support this movie because of the film’s story. We say this based on the high number of Muslims we saw at the evening show at Regal. Overall, My Name is Khan portrays Muslims in a positive light and America in a bad light.
The PubliShitty drama because of the Shiv Sena’s ‘threats’ surely helped to keep My Name is Khan in the limelight. Without that PubliShitty drama, My Name is Khan’s numbers would have likely been lower.

Bro, i showed you the article, My name is khan indeed made around 66 crore from 7 MARKETS accroding to the hollywood reporter. As for India gross, obviously wrong but that was Hollywood reporter numbers. JUst browse the article leading to the release of MNIK and you will understand what i’m talking about. i used to read their theory about SRK relation with pakistan….and i realize that Dipen sen always condemn this film even before it is release….gosh…do you really hate SRK that much? there are a few reasons that i found when i always read this site (like he always portray the same role, he act only with karan johar and big banners,he is not a good actor etc). is this the reason you hate SRK???? shame on you guyz. So i supose the “NET COLLECTIONS” for 3 idiots was around 64 crore am i right? Therefore usign the same calculation we can also work our My name is khan to be the same as it too grossed in the 60 crore NET COLLECTION department!
As for me accpeting Aamir as number 1 , i already have, thats the reason why i saw 3 idiots thrice in cinemas, but there is no need to bully Shahrukh Khan as a result. You may not like him but many of us give him the same respect as any other actor!

A Crushing Bore…Sandy’s review of MNIK
What happens when you try to take a leap higher than what one’s legs allow? You obviously fall. With My Name Is Khan, Karan Johar tries his hand at a subject that he is clearly not equipped to handle. But like an overzealous eater who orders too much without judging well his appetite and constitution, Karan decides to go to the radical extreme of the fluffy entertainers he’s done so far, and packs in every weighty theme out there. The result is a half-baked film that is neither serious in its tackling of political issues nor entertaining. In fact, MNIK is naively propagandist, made with the single-minded purpose of portraying its lead actor as a messiah for the humankind.
For the kind of epic film that MNIK hopes to be, it had to be emotionally moving and inspiring. The incidents needed to be organically born out of the story, the romance needed to be more rooted and real. This is not the case, as both scriptwriter Shibani Bhatija and Johar indulge in heavy narrative bullying, creating contrived situations to meet their ends. It’s almost like these two people smugly assume the audience to be on the same page as them, even when they are not. This is especially true in the second half, where the film’s autistic hero, Rizwan is put through all kinds of grueling trials to show him as the paragon of virtue and humanity. So even as all the characters in the film cry buckets seeing him saving katrina victims on television, or go misty-eyed when he finally gets to meet the US President (how cringe-worthy this scene is!), you sit there in the audience feeling bored and non-plussed. The only thing worse than emotionally manipulating your audience is to be caught doing so.
Still,the first half is somewhat tolerable. You never know why SRK has aspergers or what its larger significance in the film is, but the actor works his charm in some of the scenes with Kajol. Their brief courtship and marriage is not a very plausible scenario, but there is something touching about the way Kajol accepts him into her life. She marries him not because she is in love, but perhaps because she believes a man like Rizwan deserves his share of love and happiness. The film is not bad till this point and if this relationship would have been explored further, it might just have made for an interesting story.
But then 9/11 strikes and the film derails completely. There is no depth in the conflicts that arise from hereon. Why would Kajol shun her husband for his religion at such an emotional point in her life? Racism was not born after 9/11. Yes, the situation grew worse, but when a liberated Hindu woman marries a Muslim man, one fairly assumes that she is mentally prepared for the same. In any case, this basis of Rizwan’s long journey is unclear and unconvincing. Since the motives are weak, you are not emotionally moved and the film starts to seem incredibly lengthy and tiresome.
While the story itself doesn’t quite work, it is the 9/11 and American backdrop that induces a great deal of ennui. It says nothing that has not been said before. We’ve had Khuda Ke Liye and New York – both superior to MNIK and in America itself there have been several films made on the subject. So why make something on a similar theme when you have nothing new to say?
Again, looking at the amount of English used in the film and the backdrop used, obviously Karan is looking at a global audience. But what can be taken home by any audience in any part of the world from so simplistic a film. It does not even pose the right questions, forget offering solutions.
As for the performances, SRK is earnest and tries to infuse his character with some life. But it’s not a role that entirely makes sense, and he’s put through some really awkward situations in the film. The actor is one of our most charismatic stars and when he’s cast in a good role and film, he’s very effective (Chak De India!, Devdas). But in this case, the script lets him down and he must take some blame for green-lighting a project such as this.
Kajol is loud, over-excited and constantly screeching. She is on a different pitch and level from the rest of the film.
Karan, you are great with light stuff or even ones looking seriously at relationships (I think KANK was an interesting failure) , but keep away from the activism. Classics happen, they can’t be manufactured.

Veer was an average movie agreed but a beautiful story. My white friends loved it. Lets give credit to whom it is due. People say MNIK is okay, some say fab, some say utter nonsense….negative word of mouth more popular! People are entitled to their own opinions! Why are u all slanging ur industry like this! I am not even Indian, yet I think ur actors are doing a fab job producing nice movies.
@SRK fans..lets be real, it will do well overseas but in India its probably going to be a flop especially when u take into consideration that Fox has to recover their costs first! Everyone I know here in aberdeen who has seen the movie said it is boring but SRK was brilliant in it. Isn’t that what matters? Not every film Denzel Washington acts is a hit but he is still respected for his acting. The same should go for Salman, SRK and Aamir! Give kudos to whom it is due.
I am a Salman fan..I really like Salman Khan a lot. I think he is fab and that is my own opinion but that does not give me the right to insult SRK and call him gay! Really guys stop! Flop or no flop, every actor u have mentioned on this page is a star in his own right! Yes MNIK will not do well in India but SRK acted well in it which is what everyone is saying, even those that say it was boring. My Name is Khan opened with a bang at the box office, earning a whopping Rs 85 crores (US $18m), but it saw a drop in business from Monday as the word of the mouth was not good enough to sustain the film.
Though many critics loved it and so did the classes, the masses overall seem to be in a rejection mode.
Says Komal Nahta, Bollywood trade analyst, “On the whole, My Name Is Khan is far from entertaining and also too boring for the general masses. For the heavy budget at which it has been made, it will keep its worldwide distributors (Fox Searchlight) in the red. Business in big cities, especially in South India [ Images ], Muslim centres and overseas will be better but it will be below the mark in North India as also in smaller centres and single-screen cinemas. It may be appreciated by the class audience but the masses will reject the film.”
The curiosity value is over, it seems. The picture has suffered a considerable drop in collections on Monday,” said Vinod Mirani, another Bollywood trade analyst.
Added Amod Mehra, another trade analyst, “At this moment, it appears the film will not be able to recover the cost because it has been sold at a high price.”
Asked about critics loving the film and some of them even giving five stars rating, Mehra said, “Earlier there were paid previews of the film, now there is paid review of the film.”
I haven’t watch MNIK yet so I can’t comment about the film.But as a muslim I really appreciate the theme of the movie.The plus point of the movie is the fabulous reviews from the critics.But as a hard core fan of Salman I am disappointed by the comments of critics.Was the movie really so bad?I loved it.This could be a huge hit if the critics were not so rude.Critics are ruining the hindi film industries.
Bad News:- The film is not doing well on monday…… Monday will be around 3-4 Crores nett if the night shows bring some good collections otherwise it will end up at 2.5 to 3.0 Crores nett… that will be a huge fall…. Next few days will be very important to decide the fate of the film…. The movie is more likely to lose from here…
Looking at above comments it seems ppl are comparing SRK and Aamir.
Few points:
Aamir Khan is a good actor and he choses his movies. Usually his movies are better than his acting. For instance 3 Idiots, his acting was below average he cannot complete one sentence in a flow. He lacks charisma of a genuine star thus people and media do nto follow him. 3 Idiot is a great movie because of the director and Ketan Bhagat. I think Boman Irani has acted better than Aamir. However not to criticize him completely he has good brains to make t he flow of the movie really catchy.
SRK is extremely talented, he can express himself on scree like no other actor in India can, his selection has offlate been not correct but his acting has been superior than his movies.
No logical discussion can be held on any movies collection as there are is no valid and authentic source to pick up the report.

Just saw MNIK, Very very boring movie, this film never picked up at any level. How Slow the movie was !!!
SRK’s acting was not natural looks like he is trying to do acting & Trying to be serious. as a muslim i loved some massage.There was no climax in the film. How this movie got 4.5 even 5 star can’t understand. If this got 4.5/5 then 3 Idiots deserv 10/5. even VEER was better than that. In my opinion this film deserv 2/5. This is a very average film.
Srk is known by the whole world. He is getting famous more and more. I like Amir he is a great actor. But again there is no comparison with srk. Srk is the greatest actor ever produced by bollywood. Srk is the face and pride of bollywood. People knows bollywood becuase of srk.
Mnik is an Excellent movie. I have seen this movie three times and each time i loved this movie more and more.
