Is MNIK worth the media coverage its getting?

Nothing against Shahrukh Khan or Karan Johar here. But watching every news channel and newspaper give My Name Is Khan national importance, is hard to digest. Even now with the film having released across all multiplexes in India, the topic of discussion and debate continues to be the film.

Surely there are bigger problems in the country, that deserve more coverage and importance, don’t you think?

Also would other actors get the same backing from the media, the government and not to mention the industry, as MNIK has?

1) When Aamir Khan’s Fanna was banned in Gujarat, not many stood up for the actor, least the media. The producers (Yashraj) lost a lot of money.

2) Hrithik Roshan’s last film Jodha Akbar too was banned in Rajasthan, later in Madhya Pradesh and eventually in UP. Where was the government, the media? Why wasn’t the same security and assurance provided to the film and its makers? The film lost 6 – 8 crores, no less.

All we are trying to say here is, irrespective of how big / small the film is, irrespective of who the lead star is, every film that is passed by the censor board should witness a smooth release all over.

It’s moment of truth for Star Plus
Mumbai, Delhi: Financial losses for the producer, distributors and exhibitors of My Name Is Khan (MNIK) could be far lower than the anticipated Rs 40-45 crore with the film having been released in all multiplexes in Mumbai on Friday amid high police security.

While the morning shows were cancelled for fear of protests, most of the cinemas in the city started screening the film by afternoon. In the capital region, MNIK opened in 90 screens, including multiplexes and single screen theatres with an average occupancy of over 80%. Some of the multiplexes witnessed a 100% booking for MNIK for the first-two shows.

Fox Star Studio, the distributors of the film released 1,300-1,400 prints domestically and 2,000 prints worldwide. Over 100 prints each of the film have been earmarked for the United States, the United Kingdom and markets in the Gulf region & the South East Asia. Smaller number of prints have gone to other parts of the world, including European countries and the African continent, a film analyst says.

Meanwhile, advance booking for MNIK is on a full swing in Gurgaon, Chandigarh, Ludhiana, Noida, Lucknow and several other cities in the north, industry sources said.

Vivek Krishnani-marketing head, Fox Star Studio said, “The film has got a huge opening with 100% occupancy pan-India.” He, however, ruled out the possibility of any revenue loss from a few cancellation of the morning shows. The Rs 45-crore budget film, and sold to Fox Star Studios for Rs 85 crore, MNIK has been subjected to the anger and wrath of Shiv Sena due to the comments Shah Rukh Khan made in support of the selection of Pakistani cricket players for IPL-3.

According to Box office India magazine editor Vajir Singh, Maharashtra contributes almost 25% of total box office collections and Mumbai alone collects 10-15% of the entire business across the country. According to those watching the development closely, if the movie had not been released in Mumbai this weekend, about 25% of the total revenue of the film may have been lost.

Meanwhile, with masses going to watch MNIK in theatres across the country despite a boycott-call given by Mumbai-based Shiv Sena, Ambika Soni, minister of information and broadcasting (I&B) has termed it a national view. “There can’t be a view of the ministry on this. It is a national view. People have spoken about their stand to go and watch the film in Mumbai and other parts of the…

  • Dipen Sen

Zoom tv is a media form, have u seen the film Rann? Also they stir Bollywood stories like anything.

youll know that media can lie, financial express is one of the most respected newspapers, coupled with the fact that Vijay Singh himself stated that there where only around 1300 prints in India.

I take back what you said, perhaps you arent lying, but rather than follow the media like a drugged dog, perhaps you could think about the abdusrdity of what you are claiming. the official MNIK site states that only roughly 1100 cinemas in India are screening the film. At max, 80% of cinemas have only 1 print of the film. Chains like PVR, Fun, Cinemax may have 2 prints each. Therefore 1300 seems about right for a print count in India. Perhaps 1400, but 1950? sorry but im sticking with my guns on this. If you dont apprehend then that is fine.

  • My name is Khan success continues

WASHINGTON: Shahrukh Khan starrer ‘My Name Is Khan’ has turned out to be the largest weekend grosser Bollywood film ever in North America, recording
an estimated $1.86 million in the US and Canada.

The movie, directed by Karan Johar averaged a stellar $15,500 from 120 theatres across the US and Canada.

The Fox Searchlight movie opened on Friday with $444,000 and rose 65 per cent to $734,000 on Saturday.

It is estimated to dip seven per cent to $682,000 today, celebrated across the world as Valentine’s Day.

Monday’s ‘Presidents’ Day’ holiday in the US will lead to a four-day debit of more than $2 million, the firm handling promotion and advertising of the film claimed.

‘My Name Is Khan’ also generated the highest per-theatre average of any film in the Top 20 over the weekend.

The previous record was held by Shahrukh’s musical extravaganza ‘Om Shanti Om’, which grossed $1.76 million from 114 theatres over Diwali weekend in 2007.

The American mainstream media is all praise for the movie which received rave reviews.

“This is a movie not built for subtlety, but it does tackle a subject American movies have mostly avoided — that of racial profiling and the plight of Muslim-Americans.

It also allows Shah Rukh Khan to display his talent to an even wider audience. It’s well worth the 162-minute journey,” The Hollywood Reporter, an American trade publication of the entertainment industry, said in its review.

  • @ Sami
Thanks for giving us such a great news. So mnik is rocking in us , uk everywhere. This deserve all these credits. Srk is the king of world.

  • Just to confirm that the article about My name is Khans box office gross has been confirmed Box office mojo(BOM), Americas most respected box office trade analyst. thats http://www.boxofficemojo.com
Remember SRK fans this is just an ESTIMATE, could change, but from my own past experiences with BOM, they are usually very accurate.

For comparison: 3 idiots—-dec 25-57—-$1.64 million (BOM figure)
    Veer ——jan22-24 ——$0.34 million ( BOM figure)

Looks like Shahrukh Khan is onto a winner here!

  • @ Sami

550 prints agar release karega toh record toh create hoga obviously . I dont know its true or false .

India ka collection kaha hai itna zyada hai ke two days tak TARAN ADARSH ne chupa kar rakkha hai .

Saturdays collection will be 6.5 Crores

Sundays collection will be 7 crores .

  • @ Dipen Sen

If you follow films you will know that Saturday and Sunday gross is never reported seperately, they are reported the monday following as the “weekend gross”. There is you reason why Taran Adarsh. Im sorry but yet again your soundinf like a sour Salman Khan fan, what did Veer do in USA, oh yes $0.36 million. You might also like to know that My name is Khan released in USA with only 1 extra print than 3 idiots, 120, 3 idiots opened with 119, dont believe me? read this

    http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?page=weekend&id=3idiots.htm

so, no you are completely wrong, my name is khan opened on the same amount of screens that 3 idiots did, yet it grossed more in its 3 days. Hush your mouth.

  • By Anand Sharma
Having managed to set the box office cash register ringing by generating close to Rs 40 crore in its opening weekend (Friday to Sunday) from India and abroad, Shahrukh Khan starrer My Name Is Khan (MNIK) has managed to find place amongst the top grossing Bollywood films of recent times.

The few other films to have grossed in the same range as MNIK in the opening weekends include 3 Idiots, Ghajini and Love Aaj Kal, say film trade pundits. Trade pundits expect the movie to gross over Rs 100 crore before the first week run is over. Only other films to have managed to cross the milestone in recent past are 3 Idiots and Ghajini, both starring Aamir Khan.

“MNIK opened to packed houses across all major international centres just like it did within the country. Combining the initial collection figures from UK, US, Australia and other overseas centre, the film would have grossed over Rs 40 crore in the first-three days,” says a leading film distributor from Mumbai.

The much-awaited and controversial MNIK had to face stiff opposition from Shiv Sena workers who did not wanted the people to see the film in protest of a pro-Pakistani statement made by Shahrukh Khan last month after the IPL-3 auctions.

In India, the film was initially released across 1,300 screens.

Another 500-600 prints went to the overseas centre. Most multiplexes in the country like PVR, Inox, Fame, Big Cinemas, Cinemax and Fun Cinemas among others have witnessed 100% bookings for the weekend shows.

“The bookings for all evening shows on Monday and Tuesday for MNIK are also overwhelming. We may see full-house even in the coming weekdays going by the advance booking figures,” a senior executive in DT Cinemas in Gurgaon said.

  • Prity: hahahahahahahahah.. u just make me laugh!!! Jaaneman is a good movie?!!!!! one of the worst movies in direction.. a bad movie, a lousy film.. and who was the director?!! Farah Khan’s husband!! wow.. what a brilliant director he is!!! that idiot when u see his face u know that he got no knowledge in direction.. did he pay some money and bought a certificate from a college, to be allowed in this profession?!!

There4 Shahrukh rejected Farah Khan’s script, which (the super diretor) had to direct the film!!

  • 4o cr. in 3 days, 3 Idiots generate 100 cr. in 4 days. Now comeon all SRK fans stop fighting for the records, Pray for the Super Hit status. Even Ghajini is much bigger than this. Oh Where u all who was saying MNIK will break all records. Yahoooooooooo, Aamir Khan You the real Emperor………………………

  • absolutely agreed with you ZAHIRUL.
mnik is not anywhere close to 3 idiots.
in 3 days 3 idiots gross was 93 cr .
    mnik is way behind.

  • Box office
The film broke box office records during its opening weekend. It ranked #5 in the global box office market with Avatar, Valentine’s Day, Percy Jackson & the Olympians, and The Wolfman, in the first, second, third, and fourth spots. [35] In India, “despite having a limited release in Maharashtra, Gujarat and parts of Madhya Pradesh on Friday, MNIK’s worldwide box office collections are estimated at Rs 250 million (Rs. 25 crore) for Friday. This is the highest ever collections for a non-holiday Friday in Bollywood history.” [36] In addition, on a global scale, “almost every record for Bollywood films was broken globally. Internationally, it is the biggest International opening day by almost 30% of its closest competitor, 3 Idiots.” [36] In the UK, it had the highest opening ever, taking in £1,23,000 (INR 89.61 lakhs) in just one day, even more than 3 Idiots, which took £1,21,000 (INR 88.16 lakhs) in two days.[37] In Australia, the film earned an impressive AUS$ 39,000 (INR 16.1 lakhs), and was ranked #11 in the market. According to the producers, this is 107% of the box office collections of 3 Idiots on it’s opening day.[38] In New Zealand, the film earned NZ$ 13,627 (INR 4.41 lakhs). In the Middle East, the response to the film has been described as “huge”. The film has earned approximately US$ 300,000 (INR 1.4 crores), and is set to earn much more, with the release of a larger number of prints.[36] Finally, My Name Is Khan has broken all previous opening weekend box office records for North America (Canada and U.S.) with $1.86 million in returns. [39]

Combining the initial collection figures from UK, US, Australia and other overseas centre, the film would have grossed over Rs 40 crore in the first-three days, says a leading film distributor from Mumbai.[40]

    Critical reception
My Name Is Khan was well received by top critics in India. Subhash K. Jha (film critic and author of The Essential Guide to Bollywood) gave My Name Is Khan a rave review arguing that Rizwan Khan “repairs almost anything, including irreparably damaged relationships. But this film about damaged lives needs no repairing. My Name Is Khan is a flawless work, as perfect in content, tone and treatment as any film can get […] My Name Is Khan is no ordinary film. Long after the wary-of-physical-touch Rizwan has finally shaken hands with President Obama, long after the heat and dust of racial and communal hatred has settled down the core of humanism that the film secretes stays with you. Yes, we finally know what they mean by a feelgood film.” [41] Nikhat Kazmi of the Times of India also gave it five stars, describing My Name Is Khan as, “indubitably one of the most meaningful and moving films to be rolled out from the Bollywood mills in recent times.”[42] Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama gave My Name Is Khan four and a half out of five stars and argues, “When a film stars two of the finest talents of the country, you expect nothing but the best. SRK, well, how does one describe his performance? To state that this is his best work so far would be cutting short the praise he truly deserves […] Kajol is pure dynamite and casting her for this character was the most appropriate decision. No other actress could’ve matched SRK in histrionics the way Kajol has. In fact, SRK and Kajol complement each other wonderfully well and this film only proves it yet again. It’s a powerhouse performance from this supremely talented actress.” [43] Rajeev Masand of CNN-IBN gave My Name Is Khan three and a half out of five stars, arguing that “the film shamelessly tugs at your heartstrings and on more than one occasion wallops you to weep. Aided by solid camerawork, tight editing and a layered story, Johar crafts an engaging, stirring saga that is earnest and noble. With this message movie in the mainstream format, the director takes a step in the right direction.”[44]

It also received strong reviews from notable U.S. critics and media outlets. Rachel Saltz of The New York Times states, “Khan is one of a handful of Hindi films (New York, Kurbaan) about Indians living in a paranoid, post-9/11 America, and there’s something fascinating about looking at this country through a Bollywood lens, even when the story is a kind of fairy tale. (Most interesting here is the link made between black Americans and Indians, especially Muslims.) Skillfully directed by Karan Johar and with an evocative score by Shankar, Ehsaan & Loy, Khan jerks tears with ease, while teaching lessons about Islam and tolerance.” [45] According to Kirk Honeycutt of the Hollywood Reporter, My Name Is Khan is, “a film that delves compellingly into Americans’ anti-Muslim hysteria” as it tackles “a subject American movies have mostly avoided — that of racial profiling and the plight of Muslim-Americans. It also allows Shah Rukh Khan to display his talent to an even wider audience. It’s well worth the 162-minute journey.”[46] Kevin Thomas of the Los Angeles Times argues that My Name Is Khan is “a potent, energetic heart-tugger and Khan and Kajol, major Bollywood stars, are highly appealing and equal to the demand of their emotion-charged roles.”[47] Jay Wesissberg of Variety describes My Name Is Khan as a “riotously overstuffed and enormously enjoyable drama” with “confident camerawork [which] is matched by exceptional production design” He also states that Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol are a “delight together and her natural warmth makes the relationship even more believable.” [48]

As of 14 February 2010, the film has a score of 54 out of a scale of 100 on the review aggregate website Metacritic, with a user rating of 9.5/10.[49]

    High profile screenings
My Name Is Khan will be screened as part of the 60th Berlin International Film Festival’s Official Selection in February 2010.[8] The website e-Bay auctioned the tickets for the film’s screening at the Berlin Film Festival for a record price of EUR 1,000 (INR 60,000) each. All the tickets were sold out in five seconds.[50]

  • the article above is incorrect

In usa alone the film above has generated close to 10 crore, in india it is close to 30, so the gross in uk, sri lanka, pakistan, uae, australia and new zealand is less than 2 crore is it? The article needs to check its sources.

From my working and sources the film has got around 85 crore in 3 days if not more, will update tomorrow (here in uk) with real 3 day gross, do not worry SRK fans. Article is BS, not verfiried by a reputable source like my article was.

Also if you read the article it also assumed that Gahjini, 3 idiots and Love Aaj Kal grossed the same in 3 days when its obvious they didint. DO NOT WORRY SRK FANS.

  • 40 crore in India and overseas?

R u kidding? and people are going to believe a film ditributor in Mumbai? What a load of BS. 40 crore is more in line in what it MIGHT have taken in India alone over 3 days.

Assumin around 28-30 crore in India:

we know 8 crore in usa:

so there fore 2 crore for the whole of uk, nz, aussieland, sri lanka, pakistan, netherlandsan wherever else it released?

we know that it took £300,000 over thursday-friday in uk, that is already 2+ crore. therefore My name Is khan has likely grossed waaaaaaaaaay more than 40 crore internationally, does the article make us ought to be stupid?

  • @ Sami
I also believe this is a wrong article as fiday collections were 25 crores. So its a wrong article. Mnik is getting excellent response abroad. It will be around 70 to 80 crore at least. So don’t believe this article.

  • Lol…I am in Aberdeen!
The cinema halls have been empty since friday! Long queues for Valentine’s day and Percy Jackson? Or is Aberdeen not in the UK? Please people enlighten me….thanks!
