Why Dabangg is bigger than 3 Idiots

Indicine writer Abhishek Sharma on why the success of Dabangg was bigger than 3 Idiots. The messiah of the masses, Salman Khan, has unleashed the first trailer of his home Production and arguably the most awaited movie of the year ‘Dabangg 2’. The phenomenal craze for Khan, who is on a dream run, with one blockbuster after another, has raised the expectations exponentially. While we are all set to hear and read several predictions, reviews and forecasts for this movie from the so called ‘trade experts’, let us spare few moments to revisit the aura created by the original first film – Dabangg in 2010.

From empty theatres to records, Salman sees it all in 3 years

18th September 2009, a day I would never forget. Stepping in to watch a evening show at a premium multiplex, I realised to my horror that the auditorium was barely 30%-40% occupied. The film was ‘Wanted’. A Salman Khan starrer no less. And even though the mass centres (especially single screens) had picked up  with weekend throwing up some good numbers, multiplexes had a different story to tell. Well, to begin with at least.

Rowdy Rathore vs Dabangg – Which is your pick?

Rowdy Rathore is the first ‘Blockbuster’ of 2012 and is running successfully all over in it’s 4th week. The film is now being referred to as Akshay Kumar’s Dabangg! Although the response to both films was similar, Rowdy Rathore is unlikely to go past the lifetime collections of Dabangg (140 crores). But that could well be due to competition from new releases every week – from films like Shanghai, Ferrari Ki Sawaari and Teri Meri Kahaani.

3 Idiots vs Dabangg vs Ready : Comparison

3 Idiots, Dabangg and Ready are three of the biggest money-spinners in the history of our film industry and comparing the box office figures of these films gives us a good idea on why 3 Idiots went on to nett 200 crores in India and remains the biggest grosser ever, why Dabangg did very well initially but couldn’t beat 3 Idiots and why Ready is unlikely to come close to the lifetime business of Dabangg. Check out the comparison table below

Bollywood Biggest Grossers

With the boom of multiplexes, the life of films at theaters has reduced drastically. Gone are days when a film needed a silver jubilee (25 weeks) or a golden jubilee (50 weeks) to be considered a success. These days, most films are out of theaters in a week, yet recover their investment. Films that run longer though, go on to earn bucket loads of money and are termed money-spinners or blockbusters by the trade. Below is a list of 5 such films, which are Bollywood’s biggest grossers ever! (Figures include collections from both overseas and India)
