2016 has been a dull year as far as opening of films is concerned. The best was ‘Baaghi’ which exceeded expectations on its opening day, followed by probably a film like ‘Ki and Ka’ which managed to open better than it was expected to.
‘FAN’ opened very well, but couldn’t sustain throughout the day and the film also had ‘partial holiday’ (Ram Navami) advantage. While ‘Airlift’ was on-par, ’Housefull 3′ didn’t get the kind of initial that a franchise film should.
With the first half of 2016 coming to an end, all eyes are now on the ‘Sultan’ of the box office. The film is not only expected to get a bumper opening on Friday, but more than double the collections of the biggest opener of the year so far.
While such high expectations is a testament to the superstardom of Salman Khan, the pressure to deliver a 40 crore plus opening – something that has never ever been achieved on non-Diwali holiday – will be incredibly huge. To add to it, the runtime of the film (2 hours 48 minutes) will result in fewer shows at multiplexes and hence lesser collections.
The opening records that Sultan chases:
2016 opening: Sultan is certain to top, but what will be the margin with which it beats the previous best? If trade expectations are anything to go by, the collections of Sultan could be more than double of FAN, 2.5 times more than Housefull 3, 3.5 times more than Airlift and Baaghi and 4 times more than The Jungle Book. How big will that be?
- FAN – 19.2 crore
- Housefull 3 – 15.21 crore
- Airlift – 12.35 crore
- Baaghi - 11.94 crore
- The Jungle Book - 10.09 crore
All time opening: This is where things get tougher. Only two films – Happy New Year and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo – have scored more than 40 crore on Day 1. Sultan has a chance to beat both, as it’s now certain that Yash Raj Films will release the film on Eid holiday. The biggest ‘Post-Eid’ opening day so far is the 32.92 crore total of Ek Tha Tiger – which was achieved 4 years ago. If Sultan opens at Ek Tha Tiger level, it’s certain to post the highest opening day and single day of all time.

Make no mistake – Sultan is NOT an out and out commercial entertainer. If it tops all the records mentioned above, it will be unbelievably huge. Even a 38 crore plus total will be considered beyond extraordinary.

The trailer of Sultan had made a huge impact and it ticked every box.. sultan has to take a record opening,there is no other choice because since wanted every salman Khan film released during Eid has bettered the opening weekend business of his previous eid release…Bajrangi bhaijaan holds that record for him at 103 crore approx so sultan should better this figure..6th July is a national holiday for Eid and hence the makers should release it on 6th only…it will give the film. 5 day extended weekend and there is a potential to gross 150 crore in these 5 days too…the opening day will then become all important because, If it releases on 6th I.e. Wednesday it will have a holiday directly on Sunday.Thursday will be the day after eid which is also very good for business but it’s not a holiday…and then Friday And Saturday are also working days..hence,the film has to cross 45 crore on its opening day which will provide a solid platform for other days to capitalize…
As far as lifetime business is concerned,every salman Khan eid release has ended up as the second highest grossing film of all time..this should change with sultan..the kind of openings that he has given,he deserves to topple a record which is every time expected from him especially in the last 2-3 years..I am looking forward to sultan and I hope it releases on 6th July so that I can watch it on first day itself..All the best

whatever be the collections im not interested in any of salman or srk movies. salman doesn’t know even abc of acting. and srk is just over acting. but to be honest i liked srk’s acting in chak de and swades. the only actor for whose movies i keep counting days is the legend aamir khan. His script sense and acting both are matchless.
Non-actor has been chasing the opening day record of HNY since 2014. May be, he will finally achieve it in 2016.
And in these 2 years of deprivation, illiterate fans have only one excuse that “HNY figures were manipulated”.

I’m not expecting record breaking opening from Sultan on Eid bcz we can see that ETT was released in 2012 on 15th august during ramzan and it collected 32.93 crs and CE, which released in 2013 one year after ETT on Eid day and it collected 33.12 crs only 19 lakhs different, Reason… ETT collected so bcz 15 agust was national holidays but Muslims weren’t there at theatres due to Roza. And CE collected only 19 lakhs more despite releasing on Eid Holiday that means Many Muslims didn’t watch that movie on opening day…. hence Sultan will also not collect 45+ crs on opening day, may be it can cross 40 but 45 is looking hard…
