2016 has been a dull year as far as opening of films is concerned. The best was ‘Baaghi’ which exceeded expectations on its opening day, followed by probably a film like ‘Ki and Ka’ which managed to open better than it was expected to.
‘FAN’ opened very well, but couldn’t sustain throughout the day and the film also had ‘partial holiday’ (Ram Navami) advantage. While ‘Airlift’ was on-par, ’Housefull 3′ didn’t get the kind of initial that a franchise film should.
With the first half of 2016 coming to an end, all eyes are now on the ‘Sultan’ of the box office. The film is not only expected to get a bumper opening on Friday, but more than double the collections of the biggest opener of the year so far.
While such high expectations is a testament to the superstardom of Salman Khan, the pressure to deliver a 40 crore plus opening – something that has never ever been achieved on non-Diwali holiday – will be incredibly huge. To add to it, the runtime of the film (2 hours 48 minutes) will result in fewer shows at multiplexes and hence lesser collections.
The opening records that Sultan chases:
2016 opening: Sultan is certain to top, but what will be the margin with which it beats the previous best? If trade expectations are anything to go by, the collections of Sultan could be more than double of FAN, 2.5 times more than Housefull 3, 3.5 times more than Airlift and Baaghi and 4 times more than The Jungle Book. How big will that be?
- FAN – 19.2 crore
- Housefull 3 – 15.21 crore
- Airlift – 12.35 crore
- Baaghi - 11.94 crore
- The Jungle Book - 10.09 crore
All time opening: This is where things get tougher. Only two films – Happy New Year and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo – have scored more than 40 crore on Day 1. Sultan has a chance to beat both, as it’s now certain that Yash Raj Films will release the film on Eid holiday. The biggest ‘Post-Eid’ opening day so far is the 32.92 crore total of Ek Tha Tiger – which was achieved 4 years ago. If Sultan opens at Ek Tha Tiger level, it’s certain to post the highest opening day and single day of all time.

Make no mistake – Sultan is NOT an out and out commercial entertainer. If it tops all the records mentioned above, it will be unbelievably huge. Even a 38 crore plus total will be considered beyond extraordinary.
Still it won’t beat HNY!! cuz SRK is always on top! opening depends upon star power and lifetime upon content…… HNY record can’t be broken!

2016 started on a good note with Airlift, Neerja, K&S, Ki & Ka, TJB and Baaghi . The last 2 months have been pretty bad . May was absolutely dull with Sarbjit and Azhar . Only H3 has been successful so year in June and it is an underperformer when compared with H2 . UP can be a success but not a big one . So Sultan becomes all the more important . Sultan should do 40+ because it is releasing on Eid . Breaking the record of HNY and PRDP will not be easy because Diwali is a huge day for business . But the bigger test will be the lifetime collections . The opening day collections of PRDP was higher than BB but the total collections of BB was 107 CR higher than PRDP . 200 CR is the minimum which Sultan should do . Ali Abbas Zafar has been a pretty below average director and Sultan will be his biggest challenge . Whether Sultan turns out to be an engaging Wrestling Match or a Typical Masala Potboiler we will get our answer on Eid . I am not sure whether I will watch Sultan or not but looking forward to see the response on Indicine and Box Office .

It has a great chance cross the 40 crs barrier if releasing on EID day..!! Eid festival is huge for the movies to do huge business. No doubt that, Sultan will do huge business thanks to EID else the picture would be different altogether..!!
Eg, Chennai express, It did a huge business in EID release and look at the other SRK starrer which was not matched the same business as chennai express..!!
Its all about festival that boost the collections especially EID occasion which has been really beneficial to release the movies..!!
Salman needs to prove himself on non Festival release as his Jai Ho did a below average business..!!
If any Khan’s and Hrithik comes on EID then they will surely set the box office benchmarks..!!!

@everyone who’s talking about the ‘out and out commercial film’ statement. What we meant is, it’s less glossy, more rustic. Hasn’t been mounted on a large scale either, which does make a difference at the box office.

Sultan is a completely commercial film, initially bigger than Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Prem Ratan Dhan Payo. Content is another thing. I am astonished to see indicine is calling it commercially incomplete! Just shocked!!!
Sultan at this point looks like it will have the biggest opening ever,considering it has been cleared by censor board without cuts,expect family audience to pour in theatres.

If content clicks then lifetime would be between 350-375 Crs
it might cross 40 cr on Eid but certainly not HNY record. HNY record can only be broken on solo diwali release of Srk means in 2018.
As for Sultan after seeing the runtime and CBsaying it should exceed all expectations means it will be chasing PRDP. In actual Khan’s are now Too Old,Salman run was over earlier it was just a Luck that BB came last year, Amir is playing wise so his next 2-3 movies will b f9. Srk has great line up only problem is release dates as he don’t announces dates early like others who announce it b4 shooting.
