2016 has been a dull year as far as opening of films is concerned. The best was ‘Baaghi’ which exceeded expectations on its opening day, followed by probably a film like ‘Ki and Ka’ which managed to open better than it was expected to.
‘FAN’ opened very well, but couldn’t sustain throughout the day and the film also had ‘partial holiday’ (Ram Navami) advantage. While ‘Airlift’ was on-par, ’Housefull 3′ didn’t get the kind of initial that a franchise film should.
With the first half of 2016 coming to an end, all eyes are now on the ‘Sultan’ of the box office. The film is not only expected to get a bumper opening on Friday, but more than double the collections of the biggest opener of the year so far.
While such high expectations is a testament to the superstardom of Salman Khan, the pressure to deliver a 40 crore plus opening – something that has never ever been achieved on non-Diwali holiday – will be incredibly huge. To add to it, the runtime of the film (2 hours 48 minutes) will result in fewer shows at multiplexes and hence lesser collections.
The opening records that Sultan chases:
2016 opening: Sultan is certain to top, but what will be the margin with which it beats the previous best? If trade expectations are anything to go by, the collections of Sultan could be more than double of FAN, 2.5 times more than Housefull 3, 3.5 times more than Airlift and Baaghi and 4 times more than The Jungle Book. How big will that be?

- Housefull 3 – 15.21 crore
- Airlift – 12.35 crore
- Baaghi - 11.94 crore
- The Jungle Book - 10.09 crore
All time opening: This is where things get tougher. Only two films – Happy New Year and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo – have scored more than 40 crore on Day 1. Sultan has a chance to beat both, as it’s now certain that Yash Raj Films will release the film on Eid holiday. The biggest ‘Post-Eid’ opening day so far is the 32.92 crore total of Ek Tha Tiger – which was achieved 4 years ago. If Sultan opens at Ek Tha Tiger level, it’s certain to post the highest opening day and single day of all time.

Make no mistake – Sultan is NOT an out and out commercial entertainer. If it tops all the records mentioned above, it will be unbelievably huge. Even a 38 crore plus total will be considered beyond extraordinary.

1st you said FAN is not a completely offbeat movie because of few chasing scenes which seemed added masala for you.even though the whole movie FAN is nothing with much dragged boring scenes that couldn’t give momentum to entertainment in the movie.

But now you want to save sultan by saying “it’s not out and out commercial film”,then what it is.
It has everything 3-4 item songs with heroines,1 melody songs+copy of CDI+Brothers+many hollywood movie like rocky+de ja vu too with huge promotions did by YRF+salman.and salman room it to another level of promotion with the ‘raped women’ statement.
And why you’re calling FAN got PARTIAL HOLIDAY ADVANTAGE ,didn’t it affected even a bit by IPL MATCHES?????even though not having any heroine+song+entertainment.
So anything less than 53cr will be disappointment for sultan,because the rate with which sultan made and released and promoted ,it should have did 3 times more than the unpromoted FAN.

The way you exaggerate his stardom, the way you patronize him, a record breaking opening day is must if Sultana is releasing on a holiday. I mean how can one of the biggest megastars of the country couldn’t put big numbers on B.O. ?
Do you remember one of your QnA session, where you replied ‘who are the top Bollywood actors in terms of opening numbers’ saying – Salman Khan, “Way ahead of others”.
And now you came with such a silly reason that Sultana is not an out-to-out Masala entertainer.
I mean does it really matter? We all know that first day, most of the die-hard fans march towards the theatres and they really care about the masala or content. All they want is to see their idol on the big screen.
Why didn’t you give such “non-favorable” excuses at the time of FAN (Which was promoted as a song ‘less’ movie from the very beginning) ?
P.S. : I am not claiming if Sultana will cross HNY or fall short. That we will come to know eventually on Eid. But I am a bit disappointed with your way of reporting.
