Veer Movie Review

To be honest, I didn’t really have great expectations from Veer. The promos weren’t too exciting, Anil Sharma’s last few films were strictly average, the cast wasn’t very appealing either and Zarine Khan looked plumpy (if that’s any reason). But about 30 minutes into the film, it turned out to be quite enjoyable, the first half infact was very enjoyable.

Before we dig in any deeper, the story first.  Veer is a revenge tale of the Pindhari’s against the Raja of Madhavgarh. The Raja (played by Jackie Shroff), a victim of the Divide and Rule strategy employed by the British, betrays the Pindari’s killing thousands of them. In return one brave Pindari, Prithvi Singh (played by Mithun Chakraborty) chops off the right hand of the Raja. Both swear revenge.

Years later, the son of Prithvi – Veer (Salman Khan) takes on the might of the British and the cruel Raja, who is unaware that his very own daughter Yashodhara (Zarine Khan) is in love with his greatest enemy.

What works in Veer

  • The love story works big time in the first half, right from the extremely sweet introductory scene of Zarine Khan, when she first sees Veer.. to those heart warming moments in UK. Anil Sharma to his credit has handled the romantic parts pretty well.
  • The first half keeps you hooked throughout and the film does get very interesting at interval point.
  • The action sequences, although not as many as those in Wanted, are extremely well choreographed. Should work big time with the single screen audience
  • What’s also important while watching a film like Veer, is a bit of patience. Don’t go in expecting a fast-paced action romantic film. Don’t expect any subtlety either, Veer has shades of Gadar – its loud (at times too loud) and raw. If the hero roaring like a lion, mouthing exaggerated dialogues, taking on 10 men at a time is your cup of tea, you will end up enjoying Veer. Otherwise, the romance works as a saving grace.
  • The chemistry between Salman Khan and Mithunda was nice to watch.
  • The music was fantastic. Its Sajid- Wajid’s best work in ages! LOVED Surili Akhiyon Wale.

Negatives

  • The problem with Veer is, when its good its very good. But when bad, its very bad! The film had enough potential to be far more effective and engaging, but the screenplay writer (Shaktimaan Talwar) and its executor (Anil Sharma) goof up the second half.
  • Sohail Khan’s character was unnecessary and Jackie Shroff’s more important negative character doesn’t work.
  • Why is a feel-good ending an absolute must for every Bollywood film? The impact would probably have been slightly more if not for the clichéd ending.
  • Veer has far too many songs, 3 in the first and 3 more in the second. The music is good, but the extended song and dance numbers just stretch the film. Preferably for better impact, a couple of songs should either be chopped off or shortened.

Performances

  • Salman Khan is slightly over the top in the initial reels (first 20 mins), but quickly gets his act right and delivers a good performance.
  • Zarine Khan looks gorgeous (as the princess) in the first half, its hard to take your eyes off her. Strangely in the second, the make up men don’t get her look right.
  • Mithunda is in form and delivers a knock out performance, which will be received with whistles from the single screen audience.
  • Sohail Khan is outright irritating. Just an extension of his funny acts from almost all his films.
  • Jackie Shroff looks out of shape, average performance.
  • The rest don’t get much scope.

Overall, Veer isn’t close to as bad as some of the reviews suggest. Its watchable and very enjoyable. At the box office, Veer should do well on single screens.

Rating: ★★★☆☆ Good.

so dont just blame HINA saying she is 17 or 18 cause she might be 20 25 30 or even 15 / 10 she liked it if u didnt like it dont judge there age accuse like that

    thanks

  • Oh.. I forgot to mention the movie Lagaan in my ratings..because Lagan was also during that Period, British ppl and all that stuff.

Lagan wl top them all.. 5/5.. best in everything.. no flaws and a very good direction.

Now u Salman fans.. let me tell you one thing: JUST SHUT UP.. YOU R ALL IDIOTS DON’T KNOW HOW TO VALUE GOOD FROM BAD.. U R ALL BIASED, SPREADING FALSE REVIEWS TO ENCOURAGE PPL TO GO AND WATCH IT.. TO MAKE MONEY FOR THIS BAD MOVIE IN ORDER TO BE A HIT.

Whoever didn’t watch Veer yet and looking for a quality good movie in direction.. just avoid Veer and don’t believe his fans.

  • fathiya now dont make us pist ok if u didnt like it just shut ur mouth and just u didnt like and dont tell other not togo and watch who the hell do u think u are please just say u dint like and shut ur mouth u Hater

  • Shamry: but Fathiya also loved hit and blockbuster movies e.g. Kal Ho Na Ho, Veer Zarah, Sangam, KKHH, Mohabbetain, Lagaan, Aradanah, Guide, Chakde India, Mojse Shadi Karogi, Biwi No. 1, De Dana Dan, Singh is Kinng, Rangeela, Pardes, and many many others which I can’t remember now.. so don’t try to say lies about me..ok.

  • i dint say ur lying i just said u just say that u didnt like it and dont give to say that its poor direction poor story blah blah and dont go to watch the movie for others cause its bad but i hope u direct a movie to see how talented u are cause wen u blame others like that

  • Age matters.. because grown up ppl saw more movies in their life.. so they can “distinguish” a good direction from a bad one.. which youngsters could never do!!!

  • hahaha.. why should I go and direct a movie? Do the critics direct movies or they just “watch” and write their opinions about any movie? If u go to any shop to buy a food.. let’s say: Biryani.. you tasted biryani in many restaurants.. u find some good and u find some bad.. so you’ve all the rights to tell eveyone which restaurant sells good biryani and to avoid the bad ones.. but do u hv to be a chef, to be the cook in the restaurant then u hv the right to say if it’s good or bad?! or the customer is the one who has to say whether it’s good or bad because he’s paying the money and getting the dish.. the cook would (never) admit that he did a bad dish.. right or wrong?!!

  • see my prediction was right .. this bore of a movie has bombed ..shattered to smithereens.. all d sallu fans could not collect 35 crores and donate him ..if this was such a good film people would have thronged the theatres but sadly only owls are sitting there ..and with today it will be totally decimated ..annihilated.. RaNN and ishqiya will murder this veer forever ..guys rejoice happy days are back.. veer has been put in the grave for all generations..there is nothing good about this wretched film bura hua

  • the movie has been taken off today from the many single scrrens it was running today as ishqiya and rann take their place…more drop…ha ha ha.. now only god can help this mega disaster.. it is the armageddon fro this film today.. the burial starts in another 2-3 hrs ..adieu veer ,sorry u couldnt fight it out

  • Hey Fathiya ji and Megha ji read this….. • here is another review predicting the inevitable
New Delhi, Jan 26 – Salman Khan’s much ambitious period drama ‘Veer’ has fallen flat at the box office despite having an extended weekend for business, thanks to Republic Day. The movie has not gone beyond an average 45 percent occupancy over the initial weekend.

Released Friday, the film was a solo release, but has failed to attract masses.

‘ ‘Veer’ is an average movie. While the constant on Friday and Saturday was only 44 percent occupancy, it dropped to 39 percent on Sunday and has been on an average only 43 percent over the initial weekend,’ Amit Awasthi, manager (programming and operations) of Spice Cinemas at Noida, told IANS.

‘It is now expected to fall around 30-35 percent. We were running 19 shows per day and in the new week, we will change it to eight shows per day,’ he added.

Written by Salman 20 years ago, the film was co-produced by Eros International Media Ltd presentation and Vijay Galani’s Moviez production.

Made at a budget of around Rs.44 crore, (Rs.440 million) ‘Veer’ has been directed by Anil Sharma and marks the big screen debut of Zarine Khan, who is said to have a close resemblance to Salman’s actress girlfriend Katrina Kaif.

Set in colonial India, the film encapsulates a period when the British enslaved India with their divide and rule policy and kings and nawabs fell for it, except for the Pindaris who preferred death to dishonour and fought till their last breath. Salman plays one of the bravest and strongest Pindari soldiers named Veer.

‘There has been a major drop in the movie. ‘Veer’ is a period movie and audiences have not been able to relate to it. The movie got only around 40 percent of opening because there was no competition considering it was a solo release,’ said Yogesh Raizada, corporate head (cinemas) of Wave Cinemas.

‘Now that we have an extended weekend due to Republic Day, may be it gets some footfalls as people don’t have any other movie to watch,’ he added.

  • and ah yes i went to my psychiatrist and rightly he diagnosed it as veeritis ..inflammatory lesion to the brain and eyes simutaneously caused by watching this film.. he said he has been flooded by such patients and he has advised them from not seeing any salman starrer in the future and to advise all my friends and relatives to refrain from seeing this movie..which im doin so it is contagious and so before all of you also start suffering from it best remdy is to avoid it all costs.. i will visit your doctor also at 7.00 pm.. and take a few aquaintances who also are jarred after seeing this aweful movie

  • Megha,u do reply aftr hours n between this time,u write ur own views n collections. So stop this rubbish n Hina told u 2 consult a docter not a condector.n u also watch Jhoom barabar jhoom, drona,Aag n jashn,u can take these frm Fathiya, she has a lot of.

  • @megha ..hahahahahaha.Plz keep on following ur Docs Prescriptions.Coz u might need a double dose of it when MNIK releases :)

  • many people are reporing sick to hospitals after seeing this movie..some felt extreme pukish during the movie while others had vertigo.. i guess you people should avoid cos salman fans have been getting into iccu and are on ventilator support after seeing and prsising this film ..the poor collections ahve led to quite a few heart attacks to salmans fans.. its time u guys opened your pockets and bought all the tickets of the halls going empty
