Veer Movie Review

To be honest, I didn’t really have great expectations from Veer. The promos weren’t too exciting, Anil Sharma’s last few films were strictly average, the cast wasn’t very appealing either and Zarine Khan looked plumpy (if that’s any reason). But about 30 minutes into the film, it turned out to be quite enjoyable, the first half infact was very enjoyable.

Before we dig in any deeper, the story first.  Veer is a revenge tale of the Pindhari’s against the Raja of Madhavgarh. The Raja (played by Jackie Shroff), a victim of the Divide and Rule strategy employed by the British, betrays the Pindari’s killing thousands of them. In return one brave Pindari, Prithvi Singh (played by Mithun Chakraborty) chops off the right hand of the Raja. Both swear revenge.

Years later, the son of Prithvi – Veer (Salman Khan) takes on the might of the British and the cruel Raja, who is unaware that his very own daughter Yashodhara (Zarine Khan) is in love with his greatest enemy.

What works in Veer

  • The love story works big time in the first half, right from the extremely sweet introductory scene of Zarine Khan, when she first sees Veer.. to those heart warming moments in UK. Anil Sharma to his credit has handled the romantic parts pretty well.
  • The first half keeps you hooked throughout and the film does get very interesting at interval point.
  • The action sequences, although not as many as those in Wanted, are extremely well choreographed. Should work big time with the single screen audience
  • What’s also important while watching a film like Veer, is a bit of patience. Don’t go in expecting a fast-paced action romantic film. Don’t expect any subtlety either, Veer has shades of Gadar – its loud (at times too loud) and raw. If the hero roaring like a lion, mouthing exaggerated dialogues, taking on 10 men at a time is your cup of tea, you will end up enjoying Veer. Otherwise, the romance works as a saving grace.
  • The chemistry between Salman Khan and Mithunda was nice to watch.
  • The music was fantastic. Its Sajid- Wajid’s best work in ages! LOVED Surili Akhiyon Wale.

Negatives

  • The problem with Veer is, when its good its very good. But when bad, its very bad! The film had enough potential to be far more effective and engaging, but the screenplay writer (Shaktimaan Talwar) and its executor (Anil Sharma) goof up the second half.
  • Sohail Khan’s character was unnecessary and Jackie Shroff’s more important negative character doesn’t work.
  • Why is a feel-good ending an absolute must for every Bollywood film? The impact would probably have been slightly more if not for the clichéd ending.
  • Veer has far too many songs, 3 in the first and 3 more in the second. The music is good, but the extended song and dance numbers just stretch the film. Preferably for better impact, a couple of songs should either be chopped off or shortened.

Performances

  • Salman Khan is slightly over the top in the initial reels (first 20 mins), but quickly gets his act right and delivers a good performance.
  • Zarine Khan looks gorgeous (as the princess) in the first half, its hard to take your eyes off her. Strangely in the second, the make up men don’t get her look right.
  • Mithunda is in form and delivers a knock out performance, which will be received with whistles from the single screen audience.
  • Sohail Khan is outright irritating. Just an extension of his funny acts from almost all his films.
  • Jackie Shroff looks out of shape, average performance.
  • The rest don’t get much scope.

Overall, Veer isn’t close to as bad as some of the reviews suggest. Its watchable and very enjoyable. At the box office, Veer should do well on single screens.

Rating: ★★★☆☆ Good.

And u have asked that r u a die hard fan of salman khan, I dont know what is the real meaning of dia hard fan, but yes i like salman the most, atleast more than SRK and Akki. And the question about favourite Actresses with Salman khan, I think Salman has that kind of personality which suit with each good loking actress of bolywood. But with Katrina I think he is Owesome

  • Nauman…i dont undrstand whether u r a follower of Salman or not….bcoz ur comments keep changing….sometims for Salman and somtims against…Or there r two Naumans hre…dnt kno

  • @Akhlaq Bahe ..No need to apologise. Its Anil Sharma who is responsible 4 such flaws.Even the editing is very crappy. The Scene you have higlighted is one of the flaws in the movies. There was no need to execute it the way it has been. But on the whole almost every movie being released these days is full of flaws. Most recent example is 3 idiots.I am an engineer n the way they have highlighted engineering was quite variant 4m reality. All of my classmates saw dat movie together n belive me there were lots of flaws they pointed out.But still they applauded the movie 4 novelty.Same goes for Veer as it is fresh in providing Masala Treatment to an Epic Story. So Akhlaq Bahe 1.5 is little harsh :)

  • SALAAM 2sallu fans

Veer grossed Rs. 22 crore nett in India in its first four days. It is expected to gross nett Rs. 35 crore within its first week of release.

    Box office
Veer grossed Rs. 22 crore nett in India in its first four days. It is expected to gross nett Rs. 35 crore within its first week of release.[10] Veer has performed poorly overseas with around Rs. 5 crore business in the international markets. In the United Kingdom it grossed Rs. 1.10 crore, while in North America its take was Rs. 1.50 crore. The response in the Middle East and Pakistan is reportedly better. Overall, the film will not be doing much business overseas

  • @Akhlaq Bahe …In 3idiots just b4 the interval. When Sharman Joshi says that he will flush the last remains of Chanchar’s Father. The cap of that bottle goes into the flush.N when Sharman n Madhavan leave, they hand over the bottle with cap to Chanchar.N he then unveils the cap n sees that there are no last remains of his father in that bottle. This is the mistake done by Outstanding Director Raj Kumar Hirani.Every time I c three idiots I find more flaws. So thats y we rate the movie when we see it first time :)

N Veer has its Flaws but Like Indicine said its watchable n enjoyable…

  • Hina: I understand your feelings coz I too tried hard to defend many movies which I liked and didn’t do well at the box office.. I’ve mentioned what I heard about the movie, as this guy, who’s indian, follow-up all the news and he said that the movie is a big flop.. yesterday also in bollywood hungama was mentioned that it’s a big dissapointment.. I don’t know Hina..but never think that what we mention about any movie would affect the box office.. the population in India is 500 millions ( don’t know if this is the correct figure but what I heard) so.. 500 million ppl would never visit websites to read reviews or use even internet coz millions are villagers, uneducated.. so what do u expect?!

  • @ Hina.

Sis, u r right that there are flaws in every movie…no arguements on that.

you are also right that its good that we rate movies on our first instincts :) point accepted and acknowledged.

anyways. congrats for a good tuesday for the movie. i sincerely hope that the love for salman overshades the critical eyes such as mine :) best of luck for the days to come.

  • @Akhlaq ..Thnx a lot 4 acknowledgement.N yeah Veer is rocking INSHALLAH it will be atleast above average or semi hit.

@Fathiya ..Thnx 4 understanding my feelings. But look at the Box-office collections Veer is Rocking.

  • This is from economic times read on guys, i have posted this article on box office update also.

‘Veer’ not going strong at box office

NEW DELHI: Salman Khan’s much ambitious period drama “Veer” has fallen flat at the box office despite having an extended weekend for business,
thanks to Republic Day. The movie has not gone beyond an average 45 percent occupancy over the initial weekend.
Released Friday, the film was a solo release, but has failed to attract masses.

” ‘Veer’ is an average movie. While the constant on Friday and Saturday was only 44 percent occupancy, it dropped to 39 percent on Sunday and has been on an average only 43 percent over the initial weekend,” Amit Awasthi, manager (programming and operations) of Spice Cinemas at Noida, told.

“It is now expected to fall around 30-35 percent. We were running 19 shows per day and in the new week, we will change it to eight shows per day,” he added.

Written by Salman 20 years ago, the film was co-produced by Eros International Media Ltd presentation and Vijay Galani’s Moviez production.

Made at a budget of around Rs.44 crore, (Rs.440 million) ‘Veer’ has been directed by Anil Sharma and marks the big screen debut of Zarine Khan, who is said to have a close resemblance to Salman’s actress girlfriend Katrina Kaif.

Set in colonial India, the film encapsulates a period when the British enslaved India with their divide and rule policy and kings and nawabs fell for it, except for the Pindaris who preferred death to dishonour and fought till their last breath. Salman plays one of the bravest and strongest Pindari soldiers named Veer.

“There has been a major drop in the movie. ‘Veer’ is a period movie and audiences have not been able to relate to it. The movie got only around 40 percent of opening because there was no competition considering it was a solo release,” said Yogesh Raizada, corporate head (cinemas) of Wave Cinemas.

“Now that we have an extended weekend due to Republic Day, may be it gets some footfalls as people don’t have any other movie to watch,” he added.

Piyush Raizada, director of Delite Cinema that upgraded itself into a two-screener, however, claims that movie is doing a good business.

“‘Veer’ is doing very well and the collections are fantastic considering it’s a long weekend,” said Raizada.

  • Salman was at his entertaining best n royally blasted d critics in his latest interview with bollywood hungama…. don’t miss the video guyz……. the first part will b uploaded tomorrow morning!!!!

  • Guys I am unable to understand why all the people are following critics comments, they are all rubbish and high profiled chamcha’s of some big business houses who are spreading misleading information to defame Salman and the film unit .. and to promote their brand of multiplex stars ..

I agree veer is not an extraordinary or a super charismatic movie, but it is an attempt to bring a complex story line on screen (which is not easy.. as we all know how many problems ‘Veer’ movie has faced during suitings and its completion is itself a compliment)..

however in the past I have seen many bogus movies getting a hit status and ‘Veer’ is much better than those if story or actors performances are compared…

‘Veer’ movie is about to gain 30-32 crores in its first week which is just ok, and the second weeks collections of 14-16 crores would be sufficient to give it a “Hit” status..

I would watch it atleast one more time, as all Salmans fans might be planning to make sure the critics are slapped properly for writing rubbish against this “Hit” movie..

  • TO THE PERSON WHO WROTE THE REVIEW FOR “VEER”: I am not sure as to who you really are but to say that your review of the hindi movie, ‘Veer’ was very misleading would be an understatement. I used to love visiting the Indicine website to catch a glimpse on which movie is worth watching. I also added you guys on my Fave list (ofcourse I that has changed now). Based on your views of this movie I went to see it and was DISGUSTED at the torture I had to succumb to. You mentioned, “But about 30 minutes into the film, it turned out to be quite enjoyable, the first half infact was very enjoyable”. Okay, are you joking???????????????????????????????????????????? Dude your taste buds for good movies are DEAD.

  • Pratik has posted on facebook- Eros International announced that Salman Khan starrer – VEER in its opening weekend, has had gross collections of Rs. 41 crores worldwide at the box office. VEER did a first weekend business of Rs. 32 crores (Rs. 19.50 crores net) in India with Rs. 9 crores coming in from overseas. Salman’s last hit WANTED netted Rs. 17.25 crores for the same period…..

    5 DAYS COLLECTIONS…. 30cr!!!!

  • for me salman is “whole bollywood” i really dun care abt rest…..and veer is his movie..so everything should be here only abt veer ..not fukin MNIK and others…and i want to say to those guys who doesn’t lyk salman, veer is the first movie of bollywood which does this type of good buisness after getting bad critics review.tell me name of any movie who got 1.5 from taran and does this type of huge buisness..so these ratios shows salman’s power….and nobody cares abt fuckin taran’s n all reviews…….!!

  • sab ke sab thande ho gaye …ha ha ha ha .. my prediction was damn right from day one and it was difficult to sit through first 5 mts ..how could i go wrong ?? ivwe never been wrong ..these kind of movies are made to torture culptprits in jails…!!!. no amount of maskabaji by viewers could have ever saved the movie… you cant expect your clothes to be clean if you keep rubbing them with coal can you????

sab thande ho gaye….ha ha ha.
and the so called critics here have also fallen flat and are now sulking.. finding faults with 3 idiots is the only way they can finsd solace.. the pot sharman picked up initially itself was the wrong one and it is shown in a fleeting second i know cos ive seen the movie 6 times ..
but this veer ..it is so ridiculous that you feel as if the director feels we are all mental retards!!!! so guys here you can wippe your tears now ..honi ko kaun tal sakta hai.. this movie is buried for ever no attempts of resuscitation will ever revive it..sob sob

  • and those who say that critics and media are not doing well should doa arecheck.. nowadays it is very difficult to put false comments on your blog cos public knows best.. and public perception and media speculation is rarely very far off.. if the collections are poor than that means that the public too has rejected it na?? and the 180 cr business of 3 idiots shows how public has loved it.. so why deny the facts and go on ballistic about the figures which in any case readers here are faking.. box office india has not given any figures ..so what is your source??? everyone is writing here whatever he feel likes ..they think everyone here is a fool and will promote the movie on the basis of collections .. guys we are not here to do harakiri… my advise to those who have broadbands ..download and watrch as many times as you want

  • Despite poor reviews, Salman Khan’s Veer has grossed Rs41 crore worldwide at the box office in its opening weekend, Eros International, the distributor of the film, has said. Veer took Rs32 crore in its first weekend in India with Rs9 crore overseas, an Eros spokesman said.

  • Read on guys, this is from box office india.

    Veer Falls Heavily On Wednesday

    Thursday 28th January 2010 11.00 IST

    Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Veer showed a heavy fall on Wednesday as it recorded around 2 crore nett business. The total now is nearly 31 crore nett and the week will finish around 32.75 crore nett mark.

The fall was expected after a big Tuesday but steady collections would have meant better a second week. The film will emerge a hit in some circuits but overall hit status may be difficult unless second week can show decent collections.

The film has not done well in Mysore, Tamil Nadu and Kerala but these are small circuits so the biggest let down has come in Mumbai and East Punjab. Better business in these circuits would have helped the films a cause a lot.

“Salman is wonderful in looks and personality, he made me laugh every minute and it was an honor to work next to him. He is someone I will always look up to.”

    It’s a MUST WATCH!!!!!

  • Here we’re.. writing a review for one hour and 45 minutes which I watched in cinema tonight then left the theatre because the movie was a “torture” for me, got bored and didn’t enjoy it at all.
As u all know.. I wasn’t encouraged to go and see this movie Veer because the trailer wasn’t encouraging, a poor direction could be sensed, but today.. I changed my mind and thought: probably I’m wrong.. Hina is praising the movie, others also r doing the same, so let me go and see it.

The movie started and it was exactly as I saw online.. the cinematography was just “bad” Mithun’s acting was good ( but acting is not enough for us to enjoy the movie.. the script, the direction, the cinematography.. all these are important as well as the background music) what the hell?!! it was sooooo loud and gave me a headache.. screaming.. shouting.. speaking loudly ( Suhail Khan also ruined the movie by his stupid acting) I tried to be patient while watching it.. was telling myself: be patient.. be patient.. you’re not enjoying the movie, getting bored, getting headache, but probably you’ll find some better scenes.. just wait and continue watching it.. when this scene came which Salman has to kill the goat, and he said his dialogue.. that he’d kill the british ppl instead, and not the goat because the mother give them milk.. some indian ppl clapped for this scene.. I was little happy and thought.. good.. now some good scenes are coming ( but one sentence Salman said also is not enough to make a poor movie.. good!).

I got bored and tired and took a break for 10 minutes, left the theatre to go to a quiet place, far away from this loud movie.. and wanted to go home.. but then again told myself: why to go home.. let me go back and watch it, probably the second half is better.. so I went inside again, but after 15minutes.. I couldn’t tolerate more.. reached a fighting scene which was too loud, screaming and shouting.. too loud pathetic stupid movie.. and came back home.

Comparing this movie to Pyaar Impossible or DMG or 3 Idiots is not fair because these are different category.. I’ve to compare it with : Jodha Akbar, Asoka & Mangal Pandey..

My ratings for these historical movies as follows:
    Jodha Akbar : 4.5/5 ( I would’ve given it 5/5 but because of the length..so 4.5 is good)
Asoka: 4/5 ( excellent direction, a very good movie, nice songs, nice performance, very nice cinematography and 4/5 because I didn’t like Danny’s role)
Mangal Pandey: 3.5/5 a very good movie but little slow.. if it just had some good songs
Veer: 1/5 not even 1.5/5 a poor movie for a poor director

The best movie for Salman in 2009 was London Dreams

Moreover..I don’t believe that this actress Zarine is a pure Indian actress.. if everyone hv told u that those British girls in the movie Veer are indian girls.. would u all belive that?! even if they had indian names? No ofcourse.. we’re not that idiot to believe that this girl is a pure indian.. she’s mixed nationality and I’ve no doubt that she’s Katrina Kaif’s sister even if she denied saying that 100 times a day or bollywood tried to fool us by giving her an indian name!!! her face, her features is british, even her smile and the way she talks and stairs and her body language.. all was like Katrina Kaif! I can’t believe it.. she looks like Katrina’s sister!

  • Hina: I just don’t know what to say to you.. how old are you? 17 or 18 years old.. if u r in this age.. so I’d never be surprised that u loved this movie!

  • Further to my comments.. I was not the only one who left the theatre.. 2 or 3 ppl also left and didn’t come back before I leave

  • i would love to see fathiya directing a movie i would really

u might not like it but dont say poor direction and all cra stuff just tel which part u didnt like and finish it off

but anyways i and most of us liked i mean loved it

and u didnt its ur view but anyways thanks foe spending the money on the theater and making veer collection more hehe thanks ;)
