Veer Movie Review

To be honest, I didn’t really have great expectations from Veer. The promos weren’t too exciting, Anil Sharma’s last few films were strictly average, the cast wasn’t very appealing either and Zarine Khan looked plumpy (if that’s any reason). But about 30 minutes into the film, it turned out to be quite enjoyable, the first half infact was very enjoyable.

Before we dig in any deeper, the story first.  Veer is a revenge tale of the Pindhari’s against the Raja of Madhavgarh. The Raja (played by Jackie Shroff), a victim of the Divide and Rule strategy employed by the British, betrays the Pindari’s killing thousands of them. In return one brave Pindari, Prithvi Singh (played by Mithun Chakraborty) chops off the right hand of the Raja. Both swear revenge.

Years later, the son of Prithvi – Veer (Salman Khan) takes on the might of the British and the cruel Raja, who is unaware that his very own daughter Yashodhara (Zarine Khan) is in love with his greatest enemy.

What works in Veer

  • The love story works big time in the first half, right from the extremely sweet introductory scene of Zarine Khan, when she first sees Veer.. to those heart warming moments in UK. Anil Sharma to his credit has handled the romantic parts pretty well.
  • The first half keeps you hooked throughout and the film does get very interesting at interval point.
  • The action sequences, although not as many as those in Wanted, are extremely well choreographed. Should work big time with the single screen audience
  • What’s also important while watching a film like Veer, is a bit of patience. Don’t go in expecting a fast-paced action romantic film. Don’t expect any subtlety either, Veer has shades of Gadar – its loud (at times too loud) and raw. If the hero roaring like a lion, mouthing exaggerated dialogues, taking on 10 men at a time is your cup of tea, you will end up enjoying Veer. Otherwise, the romance works as a saving grace.
  • The chemistry between Salman Khan and Mithunda was nice to watch.
  • The music was fantastic. Its Sajid- Wajid’s best work in ages! LOVED Surili Akhiyon Wale.

Negatives

  • The problem with Veer is, when its good its very good. But when bad, its very bad! The film had enough potential to be far more effective and engaging, but the screenplay writer (Shaktimaan Talwar) and its executor (Anil Sharma) goof up the second half.
  • Sohail Khan’s character was unnecessary and Jackie Shroff’s more important negative character doesn’t work.
  • Why is a feel-good ending an absolute must for every Bollywood film? The impact would probably have been slightly more if not for the clichéd ending.
  • Veer has far too many songs, 3 in the first and 3 more in the second. The music is good, but the extended song and dance numbers just stretch the film. Preferably for better impact, a couple of songs should either be chopped off or shortened.

Performances

  • Salman Khan is slightly over the top in the initial reels (first 20 mins), but quickly gets his act right and delivers a good performance.
  • Zarine Khan looks gorgeous (as the princess) in the first half, its hard to take your eyes off her. Strangely in the second, the make up men don’t get her look right.
  • Mithunda is in form and delivers a knock out performance, which will be received with whistles from the single screen audience.
  • Sohail Khan is outright irritating. Just an extension of his funny acts from almost all his films.
  • Jackie Shroff looks out of shape, average performance.
  • The rest don’t get much scope.

Overall, Veer isn’t close to as bad as some of the reviews suggest. Its watchable and very enjoyable. At the box office, Veer should do well on single screens.

Rating: ★★★☆☆ Good.

bollybusiness gave Veer’s 2 days collections 13.4 and now 4 days are 22 cr.
it means monday was only 2.5 cr ????
now they are pulling down the figures.
i dont know why every site is doing this.

  • veer weekend= 19.5
    mon.= 3.25
    4 days collection- 19.5+3.25= 22.75
    overseas= 5 cr.
    dubai,pakistan rocking
    bt other country dull
    not include telugu version
    so total= 22.75+5= 27.75

  • Filmfare movie review-
    3/5

Going by the promos, one expected Veer to be a dash of Galdiator mixed with little portions of Braveheart. One at least expected it to be another Dharam Veer. Then, given the fact that Anil Sharma is the man who gave us Gadar, one expected it to be full of mindless action punctuated with high-jinks patriotism. Well, the film starts as an actioner. Then it delves into Sanjay Leela Bhansali territory and becomes a costume romance, then again an actioner, then a romance, then… you get the drift.

Veer was supposed to be this once in a lifetime film for Salman Khan – the film He’s been wanting to make for the last 20 years. He’s even been credited for the story. And to his credit, he’s given his 100 per cent to the film. He is there is almost every frame, with the best physique in the business, flashing his good boy smile, which is sure to charm the girls. He tries desperately to support the film on his massive shoulders. But that isn’t enough. The screenplay (Shaktimaan Talwar) is a big let down, what with its meandering ways. One expects to see lavish war scenes with a scintillating fight to the finish. The screenplay builds up to it but fails to deliver the coup de grace. And pray where was the need for the resurrection scene? That only provides the film an anticlimactic, unintentionally funny ending.

The editing (Ashfaque Makrani) too is choppy at best. The length could have been shortened by half an hour at least. The art direction (Sanjay Dhabade) and to some extent the cinematography (Gopal Shah) are the redeeming technical aspects. Barring a few scenes, action (Tinu Verma) is stuck in the ’80s. The wirework is so shoddy it makes you cringe.

Then, the supporting characters aren’t fleshed out (sorry, but making Zarine Khan put on weight for the role isn’t fleshing out the character). The young heroine looks pretty but has the same expression (that of an adoring fascination for Salman) throughout the film. Sohail Khan acts and behaves like Rajinder Nath of old (that’s not a compliment, believe me) and Jackie Shroff looks like he’s sleepwalked through his role as the evil raja. The only one who provides credence to his role is Mr Reliable Mithun Chakraborty. The screen comes alive when the veteran is on screen. The scenes between him and Salman are the best thing about the film.

  • Hina: Taran gave the movie “Paa” 4/5.. and it deserved this rating.. it wasn’t a masala movie..and the movie still running in our cinema.. I saw it twice and would love to see it again.. Rocket Singh is also still running.

Me too.. don’t agree with his ratings always.. he gave DMG 1.5/5 and it deserved more.. but he gave some movies the correct ratings.. anyways.. he’s like one of us.. a humen.. love and consider some as good or excellent and other would disagree with him.. and vice versa.

  • Fathiya
u r right some times Taran gives good rating for serious movies like TZP 4/5 , Kaminey 4/5,
and it is really wrong that why he gave DMG 1.5 because he could give it 4/5 or 4.5 /5 he just needed to call SRK before putting his review and after some negotiation he could put 4/5 easily, like Karzzzz

  • so by the account i read we must appreciate all work of everyone however shoddy and nonsense it may be ..we must recognize the labour that goes into the making of all cinema however absurd it may be just becoz the fans will be annoyed??? this is the craziest suggestion ive read anywhere ..and when veer is concerned which is bad in all departments we should cheer it ..how preposterous ..why should i lie!!!or ask anyone to lie so that my own countrymen spend money on absurdity and trash cinema..so friends please put your views with honesty and say it loud ..VEER IS THE BIGGEST LOSER OF THE YEAR

  • well , need to share somthing with u all users
im observing all ur views from last few days
u all r fighting like un matured guys n girls
hmm one advice 2 u all

bina wajah ki usko importance deren tum sab log

  • Hi Megha,

i don’t agree to your comment that Veer is bad in all departments on Movie making.
Atleast i could figure many good points in this movie.
How you view them is your single minded opinion, criticizing is easy but executing is a much bold step.

List down the movies that you had liked in 2009 and i will pen down points in them that they also had the irrelevant aspects associated with them.

  • I think u all hv to giveup.. it won’t work.. the movie is a super flop.. an indian guy confirmed that to me today..as he’s following all the news.. and I don’t.

Nauman: just stop it pls.. I’ve decided not to communicate with you.. when you callmed a “Psycho”, but then I thought u probably r sorry for that, obviously not!

What did u mean with yr last comment? If u meant that Taran Adarsh is getting paid for his reviews by the actors.. so.. it will be the same for all the actors!! Can u say that bigb also paid him for his review for Paa, or yr Akshay paid him for DDD & Blue, Shahid paid him for Kaminey.. Aamir paid him for TZP.. why not for these films?!! don’t talk rubbish please.

And.. did he really give Karzzz 4/5?!! Can’t believe it!! I’ve got to check on bollywood hungama myself.. if what u hv said is true, then I’ll stop watching him on ztv and wl stop reading his reviews..and I’ll agree with u that Taran is getting paid for his good reviews by all the actors!

  • Nauman: I’ve read Taran Adarsh’s review about Karzzzz now.. and I could not believe it! true what u hv said.. he’s praised the movie.. praised a pathetic crap kachra.. one of the worst bollywood movies which I saw in my life.. bad in direction, bad in their performance with lots of flaws.. how could he?!! I can’t understand.. I’ve to give up from nowon reading his reviews.

And he announced on bollywood hungame that Veer is dissapointing, and failed in overseas US, UK, Australia, and in the East for sure.

    Hina: read what he’s mentioned.

  • @fathiya ..Taran really gave Karzz 4 stars. That was the biggest shock of my life.N btw Veer is a hit in Pakistan n UAE n Its really doing well in India. So plz till the final collections are out dun declare a movie flop on basis of your “personal dislikeness”.Its a request.I hope so u will take it in a gud manner.

  • when u say its doing well in india or elsewhere u probably mean that its running in few halls ..but there is nothing like houseful boards and 3 day house ful,,, go anywhere and u willl get the tickets ..it is not the first choice of masses ..and then why should i not call a bad film bad??? if your production values are bad then the movie is bad..if your actors are bad then there is no point singling out one and saying one was good others were bad..!!!! so the film is bad in totallity ..yes i too read taran s view on karzzzz and felt he had given a biased rating then ..and it is the duty of people like him and komal nohata a nd subhash jha to be fair and give correct views cos the whole nation reads their views and they can be pulled up but sadly trhere are no laws regarding this so they escape buy saying that it was their personal opinion …but this time they and me are right on target.. this film is the pits 3.5 raing my foot.. i will only give it 0.5 thats how bad this is ..cmon guys u should be honest enough to call bad …BAD and good GOOD.. have some maturity.. it is not our money which is a t stake … let the makers of such trash movie go to hell…aapke STAR ko kuchh naheen hone wala

  • Veer is doing well in single screen, specially in hindi region like Rajasthan, MP, Gujraat, etc. If Veer has to be a hit than it has to run at least in single screen atleast 3 weeks becos multiplexes collection is not good engouh

  • This message is with advance apologies with Hina and other Salman Khan fans.

My nephew took me to the cinema again yesterday to watch VEER again. although i had no intensions of watching it again (as the first time was a bit difficult in itself). But he kept on insisting andf i went with him.

And i know I wil be bombarded with criticism for this but watching it for second time was even a bigger torture. There were a lot of weaknesses which i didnt notice in the first veiwing.

For example: the scene in first half where the british teacher punishes salman with the sticks. PAY ATTENTION TO SALMAN’S BACK…there is a wooden log or a peice of stone clearly visible under his shirt. whereas it was necessary to place such a solid object during shooting, the fact that that object was visible in the movie scene…now this is hight of neglegence on the part of the director.

If u dont believe me then please watch that scene with carefully…and there are other such glaring flaws in narative and execution which got highlighted in the secong viewing.

I had given a rating of 2.5 in my review…but if i were to rate it again…i could not rate it more than 1.5 or maximum 2.

  • after reading “Taran ass” article, I am 100% confident that he has some ego problem with Veer and trying his best to downgrade the movie he published incorrect figure and twisted one and two carore here and there and still can’t accept the fact that his analysis or pricdiction is going horribly wrong about veer, actually Salman worte in social networking website is Taran adarsh is paid dog he has stupid sense of mind about movies, he should be in reality shows for running for gay crwon, Taran is trying his best to demote the movie, he mentoned Veer is dissaopinting in Intl Market but did not mention Pakistan and UAE, Veer is doing exceptionally great over there, in UAE and Pakistan , you can not buy ticiet till saturday ,it is filthy jouseful,

below is another incorrect prediction of taran adarsh and slap from the super star on his ugly face,
atricle from box offcie india and point to be noted the distributor share is 20 carore +, by doing business of 29 carore till tuesday, for 20carore+ dist. share if comes from multiplex need the business og around 45 carore like blue, all the best, jodha akbar, dostana, but Veer has already reached there due to singlr screen business,
please guys accept the fct, you like it or not Veer is heading towards “HIT” or may be super hit, bcz isqiya and Ran I am confident not gonna hurt Veer

Veer Records Huge Collections On Republic Day Holiday

    Wednesday 27th January 2010 10.00 IST

    Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Veer recorded huge collections on Tuesday which was Republic Day holiday. The film grossed around 6.25 crore nett as per early estimates which takes it five day business to nearly 29 crore nett. The collections on Tuesday are the second highest ever for a Tuesday after Three Idiots but is must be noted that Veer did the business on a major holiday.

The film has benefited hugely from Republic Day holiday as the collections are double of what they would have been if it was a normal day.

The film is now heading for a 33 crore nett plus total and a distributor share of over 20 crore. Normally films post large drops after a big holiday so if Veer can stay around its Monday range on Wednesday and Thursday that will a good sign for its second weekend.

  • Yes according to BOI on republic day Veer collected over 6 cr. which is good. So it is sure that first week collection will touch near 35 cr.
