Veer Movie Review

To be honest, I didn’t really have great expectations from Veer. The promos weren’t too exciting, Anil Sharma’s last few films were strictly average, the cast wasn’t very appealing either and Zarine Khan looked plumpy (if that’s any reason). But about 30 minutes into the film, it turned out to be quite enjoyable, the first half infact was very enjoyable.

Before we dig in any deeper, the story first.  Veer is a revenge tale of the Pindhari’s against the Raja of Madhavgarh. The Raja (played by Jackie Shroff), a victim of the Divide and Rule strategy employed by the British, betrays the Pindari’s killing thousands of them. In return one brave Pindari, Prithvi Singh (played by Mithun Chakraborty) chops off the right hand of the Raja. Both swear revenge.

Years later, the son of Prithvi – Veer (Salman Khan) takes on the might of the British and the cruel Raja, who is unaware that his very own daughter Yashodhara (Zarine Khan) is in love with his greatest enemy.

What works in Veer

  • The love story works big time in the first half, right from the extremely sweet introductory scene of Zarine Khan, when she first sees Veer.. to those heart warming moments in UK. Anil Sharma to his credit has handled the romantic parts pretty well.
  • The first half keeps you hooked throughout and the film does get very interesting at interval point.
  • The action sequences, although not as many as those in Wanted, are extremely well choreographed. Should work big time with the single screen audience
  • What’s also important while watching a film like Veer, is a bit of patience. Don’t go in expecting a fast-paced action romantic film. Don’t expect any subtlety either, Veer has shades of Gadar – its loud (at times too loud) and raw. If the hero roaring like a lion, mouthing exaggerated dialogues, taking on 10 men at a time is your cup of tea, you will end up enjoying Veer. Otherwise, the romance works as a saving grace.
  • The chemistry between Salman Khan and Mithunda was nice to watch.
  • The music was fantastic. Its Sajid- Wajid’s best work in ages! LOVED Surili Akhiyon Wale.

Negatives

  • The problem with Veer is, when its good its very good. But when bad, its very bad! The film had enough potential to be far more effective and engaging, but the screenplay writer (Shaktimaan Talwar) and its executor (Anil Sharma) goof up the second half.
  • Sohail Khan’s character was unnecessary and Jackie Shroff’s more important negative character doesn’t work.
  • Why is a feel-good ending an absolute must for every Bollywood film? The impact would probably have been slightly more if not for the clichéd ending.
  • Veer has far too many songs, 3 in the first and 3 more in the second. The music is good, but the extended song and dance numbers just stretch the film. Preferably for better impact, a couple of songs should either be chopped off or shortened.

Performances

  • Salman Khan is slightly over the top in the initial reels (first 20 mins), but quickly gets his act right and delivers a good performance.
  • Zarine Khan looks gorgeous (as the princess) in the first half, its hard to take your eyes off her. Strangely in the second, the make up men don’t get her look right.
  • Mithunda is in form and delivers a knock out performance, which will be received with whistles from the single screen audience.
  • Sohail Khan is outright irritating. Just an extension of his funny acts from almost all his films.
  • Jackie Shroff looks out of shape, average performance.
  • The rest don’t get much scope.

Overall, Veer isn’t close to as bad as some of the reviews suggest. Its watchable and very enjoyable. At the box office, Veer should do well on single screens.

Rating: ★★★☆☆ Good.

  • Sorry to tell u all that the movie isn’t working in our cinemas.. just now I met my brother and asked him: how is the movie doing.. and he replied: very bad.. no audience.. and it’s not a good movie.. that’s the main reason

I’ll watch it tonigh online and will decide for myself..if it’s good or bad.

  • LOL @ Nauman,

brother my choice is better than yours..

    1. Tehqeeqat (rohnit roy)
    2. Naughty Boy (rahul roy)
    3. Oh darling yeh hey india
    4. Prem Qaidi (hiresh, karishma kapoor)
    5. Qaid mein hey Bulbul (himaley, bhagya shri)

ha ha ha…can anyone beat me in this :)

  • Prity: did I hurt your feelings?!! dear.. you can’t force everyone in this world to love or appreciate the movie which u liked.. right.. and we can’t force (you) too. to love a movie which we liked and u didn’t.. right? So u hv no right to say what you’ve said..and don’t try to hate the world because u loved a movie and lots of ppl didn’t!! crazy girl.

Hena: I planned to watch Veer tonight.. but watched only the 1st 20 minutes then had to leave it coz we had some visitors at home.. so I can’t say anything about the movie.. but I’ll only tell u my impression about this 20 minutes which I watched online.

I remember that I was so eager to see the movie Taj Mahal, a few years ago which was produced & directed by Akbar Khan.. they didn’t show the movie in our cinemas and didn’t know why ( but now I know why) I saw the trailer and loved to watch it because the heroine was beautiful, some songs were nice.. and then I was told that the movie flopped and didn’t work at the box office in India.. so I decided to watch it online. and I started downlading the 1st part.. and while watching.. I was shocked!! what a crap direction was this movie! I told myself.. the war scenes was just crap and funny.. makes u laugh at the director!! a very bad direction.. and then I realized why the movie didn’t work, and just stopped the movie downloading and didn’t finish it.. when I find any movie bad from it’s starting I just don’t like to continue watching it ( this movie didn’t hv any superstar in it.. some new actors were in the leading roles, I don’t even know their names)

So.. when we’re not so exited to see a movie, that’s nothing to do with the cast, with the hero or the heroine.. it’s something to do with the movie.. that’s the main reason for me to watch or not to watch any movie

Tonight. while watching this 1st part of Veer.. it gave me the same feeling.. a bad director is not capable of doing a “quality” movie.. hahahahaha.. can we compare this fighting scenes, the troops on horses, the bad cinematography with the movie Jodha Akbar?!! Hah..no way!! we can’t do that!! you said that the movie is better than Asoka.. impossible..Asoka is a away better than Veer.. but even though.. I still want to finish watching the movie because I’d love to see Salman’s acting in this role.. as a warrior.. but if Salman Khan wasn’t the hero of this movie.. so believe me..the movie would’ve never worked at yr box office.

  • fathiya ..people here are not bothered about the quality of cinema they just hope and prey that their fav stars movie is a hit even if its the scourge of the earth… they give exaggerated figures to change opinion and make fools out of people and cajole them to spend money….yeh koi punya ka kaam naheen hai….what they forget is that movies like theses will never work even if they go bankrupt seeing it in the theatres over and over again…and this movie is the PITS..in the name of cinema ..everyone knows here but doesnt wanna annoy their favorite star.. salman or zarine will not give them help in their hour of need ..but they will go on nevertheless.. i ask them to go and do some republic day shopping watch the parade and give this movie a skip…show that u love your country…

  • Fathiya
when watched the movie in cinema. really . i was trying to run away from hall but my freind was salmans fan thts why i watched torture movie veer.

  • @fathiya..Everybody has difference of opinion. So I respect ur opinion. You dun like it its ur choice.I remember Indicine said keep ur expectations low b4 watching Veer.N really 4 me Asoka was a crap but u liked it.Even I watched DMG I couldn’t bear it for even 5 mins. But I neva went on DMG Page to hurt anybody.Coz everybody has difference of opinion.

@adiii n megha.. Allah Knows fate of Veer. But what u r doing is dat u r creating hatred among Salman fans for MNIK b4 its release.Grow up.

  • Hina

    hey
waise mnik is most awaited movie of 2010. so plz this is power of srk. ab mein mnik ke bbare jyada nahi bolunga ktynki mein tum logo ki tarah pagal to hun jo “blockbuster blockbuster veer blockbuster” keh ke pukare.
ab 12 feb will be the biggest day of india coz srk’s movie is releasing this date……

  • @adiii ..N u r biggest Salman fan on this site :) If all such fans won’t see MNIK there will be surely no effect on business..

  • @adiii

Thnx 4 appreciating my answer atleast ;) .

Neva on this site I have said Veer will be a Blockbuster. If Ld failed any movie can.But fanz of all actors come here n support their favourite stars.Today we are supporting Veer.Tomorrow u will support MNIK.So let us support Veer.Ur comments are welcomed as long they are not obonoxious.

  • Hina: why do u take it personal?! If we express our opinion about any movie.. so we don’t mean to be “mean” or hurt other ppl’s feelings!! it’s our rights to express our opinion about any movie..then why are we here? Why do we follow up about movies.. why do we read reviews.. why do we post our comments.. all the respones would never be the same.. and that’s normal which happens on all the websites and in this world.. right? Now I’ll give u a big big example, as I’m not a biased woman because I’m a die hard fan of Shahrukh.. Shahrukh too did some movies which didn’t satisfy me e.g. Badhsha, Kabhi Han Kabhi Nah..and some old ones which I can’t remember their name, and I was “angry” that why he signed for those crap e.g. OSO.. I didn’t like it although it was a blockbuster movie except the songs and I did post my comment on many wesbsites that it’s a bad movie for Shahrukh and he should never do any movie with Farah Khan, even Main Hu Naa was a better movie than OSO).. so.. just chill.. no one wants to hurt yr feelings.. if I saw the movie Veer from starting till the end and found some parts well done, well directed, I’ll mention and I’ll express my feelings about those parts.. but I hope that this movie would work for Salman at the box office.

  • The problem is that when i gave 3 stars for Veer then every sallu fan said that Nauman is Akki fan he is not honest he is biased and gave wrong review. even none of any sallu fan watched that movie on that time but they proved me biased and cheap.
now give me answer why u r not satisfied with my review with my rating with my 50 cr prediction.
    u all guys are sick.
at least u should have appreciate me and asked me that what is worth and what is weekness , how was audience reaction , what do u think abt movie.
none of any Sallu Fan asked me these questions. all were saying that Nauman is Biased Nauman is akki fan he gave 3 stars then it means movie has worth of 4.5/5
so now see and hv a look on collections and other reviews.
this is punishment from God for every sallu fan that they said me fake and biased and now look at other critics reviews. i gave maximum rating for veer with indicine.
i accept that i am akki fan , but when i watch a movie when i write a review when i make predictions on that time i m nothing except ” Nauman Sheikh “.
but in this page i am akki fan

  • Hina:
u didnt like DMG and u didnt bother urself to visit on DMG page and u didnt put any comment abt thta.
that is really good , i like it.
so guys if u dont like any movie just say one time “i didnt like movie”
    thats it
dont need to fight with others.
Hina now i will do same as u said.

  • @Fathiya ..I told u earlier too I respect ur feelings. But let me tell u keep ur expectations low 4m Veer.I am looking 4wd to ur feedback regardless if its gud or bad :) . N same here I didn’t like Salman’s crap movies like Yuvraj n God Tusi Grat ho etc..

@adiii ..Woh tu mujhien kab ke samajh aagye the je :)

@Nauman..Just coz Salman fans didn’t like ur review u bashed Salman all over the Veer pages. Is that a professionalism?Have u seen Indicine even once defending their review?Kool n relax.I told u many times problem is not with ur rating.Problem is with ur style of writing. Many Salman fans liked ur review too.N Akki is a gud actor dun get him insulted here by ur useless comments over Salman. You will five Akshay Kumar movies this year n u can always support him n show ur love 4 him at that time.

  • @nauman ..Well yes you can criticize movie in one paragraph. But why keep on coming back n saying that this is worst movie. It will be average.Salman fans are saying this is best movie n look at the business.

@adiii ..Haan kuch mat bol hina se :)

  • Hina could u plz show me that page where i said that Veer is worst movie ?
i am 100 % genuine with me duty and it was my duty to give a honest review which i did and gave 3 /5 , and according to friday collections, other critics reviews and audience reaction i predict 50 cr for veer and if this movie will get 50 cr then it will get Above avarage Status.
so wht is wrong with u ?
if is there any decent and reasonable person so plz read my this comment and tell me am i against Veer ????

  • Adiii
it is inbetween me and Hina so u dont need to say any thing abt us.
and one more thing which i want to clear. i will Watch MNIK on 11th Feb thursday and i will put my review on thursday , and it will be 100 % genuine and honest. without watching u hv to believe on it after watch if u will not agree with me than u can say any thing i wont mind. but not like sallu fans that they didnt watch Veer and criticize me and called me biased .

  • @Hina- dont get me wrong but Indicine does defend their reviews..;) every1 does so no harm in that.
If d review is gud n collections r bad- add some crores to make it up.. or vice versa..;) he he
