Veer Movie Review

To be honest, I didn’t really have great expectations from Veer. The promos weren’t too exciting, Anil Sharma’s last few films were strictly average, the cast wasn’t very appealing either and Zarine Khan looked plumpy (if that’s any reason). But about 30 minutes into the film, it turned out to be quite enjoyable, the first half infact was very enjoyable.

Before we dig in any deeper, the story first.  Veer is a revenge tale of the Pindhari’s against the Raja of Madhavgarh. The Raja (played by Jackie Shroff), a victim of the Divide and Rule strategy employed by the British, betrays the Pindari’s killing thousands of them. In return one brave Pindari, Prithvi Singh (played by Mithun Chakraborty) chops off the right hand of the Raja. Both swear revenge.

Years later, the son of Prithvi – Veer (Salman Khan) takes on the might of the British and the cruel Raja, who is unaware that his very own daughter Yashodhara (Zarine Khan) is in love with his greatest enemy.

What works in Veer

  • The love story works big time in the first half, right from the extremely sweet introductory scene of Zarine Khan, when she first sees Veer.. to those heart warming moments in UK. Anil Sharma to his credit has handled the romantic parts pretty well.
  • The first half keeps you hooked throughout and the film does get very interesting at interval point.
  • The action sequences, although not as many as those in Wanted, are extremely well choreographed. Should work big time with the single screen audience
  • What’s also important while watching a film like Veer, is a bit of patience. Don’t go in expecting a fast-paced action romantic film. Don’t expect any subtlety either, Veer has shades of Gadar – its loud (at times too loud) and raw. If the hero roaring like a lion, mouthing exaggerated dialogues, taking on 10 men at a time is your cup of tea, you will end up enjoying Veer. Otherwise, the romance works as a saving grace.
  • The chemistry between Salman Khan and Mithunda was nice to watch.
  • The music was fantastic. Its Sajid- Wajid’s best work in ages! LOVED Surili Akhiyon Wale.

Negatives

  • The problem with Veer is, when its good its very good. But when bad, its very bad! The film had enough potential to be far more effective and engaging, but the screenplay writer (Shaktimaan Talwar) and its executor (Anil Sharma) goof up the second half.
  • Sohail Khan’s character was unnecessary and Jackie Shroff’s more important negative character doesn’t work.
  • Why is a feel-good ending an absolute must for every Bollywood film? The impact would probably have been slightly more if not for the clichéd ending.
  • Veer has far too many songs, 3 in the first and 3 more in the second. The music is good, but the extended song and dance numbers just stretch the film. Preferably for better impact, a couple of songs should either be chopped off or shortened.

Performances

  • Salman Khan is slightly over the top in the initial reels (first 20 mins), but quickly gets his act right and delivers a good performance.
  • Zarine Khan looks gorgeous (as the princess) in the first half, its hard to take your eyes off her. Strangely in the second, the make up men don’t get her look right.
  • Mithunda is in form and delivers a knock out performance, which will be received with whistles from the single screen audience.
  • Sohail Khan is outright irritating. Just an extension of his funny acts from almost all his films.
  • Jackie Shroff looks out of shape, average performance.
  • The rest don’t get much scope.

Overall, Veer isn’t close to as bad as some of the reviews suggest. Its watchable and very enjoyable. At the box office, Veer should do well on single screens.

Rating: ★★★☆☆ Good.

  • Collections will be out 2mrw. In worst case scenario also it will end up being Above Avg, which will be very good cinsidering the bad thrashing from Media & Critics that VEER got.

Regarding RANN & ISHQIYA, they won’t affect VEER’s collection coz they Multiplex movies. VEER already doing good in single screens.

  • i dont have any favorite star ..for me a good movie is something which is good in all respects and then it can be bheja fry with no stars or else it can be a n avatar.. the content should be wholesome…if srks film will be bad i will give it a sound thrashing .. but seems unlikely cos of karan johar kajol factor

  • Megha:you sound a bit like Kiran.. who used to share with us her comments on this website, and then she vanished! you’re alike!

  • hey fathiya im no kiran but yes im very stubborn like you ..basically im a movie lover and dont care much about the star and the reputation its only here that ive come to know that fans will praise their star movie even if its the worst piece of tin metal as if they are doing great obligation thereby feeding the public wrong info…its very simple you come to know of the product within 5 mts into the movie….it isnt difficult ..cmon u loved sanjay dutt in munnabhai can u say the same for him in blue??? we must assess the movie and movie alone and not the star .. i donno why people are up against each other ..if mnik is a good movie wont people like to see it…but if it is bad it will get all the negative comments ..but there has to be sufficient amount of evidence agaist it like this veeru which is loud and bad in all departments of cinematic making.the critics know it even people here know it ..but are afraid to say lest their fav stars movie might sink.. arre why are u scared .???its not in your hands .. however u may shout against 3 idiots . it will not matter cos class stands apart
remember i didnt like paa as well …too morose and obese abhishek at the helms didnt touch my cord ,i cant help but disliking all south remakes too..

i think picture will be very clear tomorrow ..people are finicky ..as soon aas a new product comes into the market they forget the older one ..just like cars ..

  • I think Megha is kinda upset, because she also a fan of Salman Khan…so guys please help Megha, and tell her Veer is doing well…

  • Megha: yeah.. whatever you’re saying is correct.. you sound like Kiran because she also didn’t have any favourite actor and was always repeating what you’re saying.. I don’t consider myself as a stubborn but I always express my opinions about any issue and can’t lie about it or be a hypocrite just to satisfy the rest.. I don’t care even if they’d swear 20 times a day.. if it’s my right to express my opnion about a movie as long as I’m respecting all the celibrities and never describe them with bad words.. so to hell with everone who don’t like my comments or use bad language.

I know you didn’t like the movie Paa and it’s your choice, but I really loved the movie, enjoyed it and watched it 3 times, twice at cinema and on a dvd too.. yeah Abhishek wasn’t so good but he wasn’t also bad, he was ok but the movie was all about the boy..bigb in this unique role.. I’d recommend that u watch it again because this director’s work is different than other directors.. when u see his movie for 1st time you don’t think that it’s great or very nice, but when u see it for 2nd time you just love it more.. did u see Cheeni Cum?

Taran Adarsh loved this movie so much and before 2 nights on ztv he said the following: how much I’d praise this movie it’s not enough.
Anyway..our taste for movies is just different.. and I respect that.

  • chalo at least we do not differ as far as this movie is concerned..universally the critics cannot be wrong..!!! and since it has tumbled out of favour and replaced by two other films it has run its due and is over with..this is painful to say but it is a flop and will be a flop film of salman not as huge as god tussi great ho but neverthe less still a flop considering the investments

  • While some preposterous claims and figures are being advanced by associated groups in the trademedia about Veer having scored huge in various hard to seen ‘interior’ places, fact of the matter is the only likely havoc being created by this Salman Khan starrer’s performance at the box office is the panic amidst the distributors who have to be shocked looking at the actual crowds and collections across India. Veer on Friday opened dismally (multiplexes) to average (single screens). How dismally has been reported already and can be verified by anyone visiting a multiplex nearby or calling/visiting a Chandan Cinema in Mumbai, a single screener, or an Alka cinema in Chindwara, MP to see what the percentage of occupancies actually are. As it so happened, even the single screens did not open well universally but rather in select pockets on Friday and there too the collections dropped by Monday, meaning just about everywhere the film is on its way out. Even Tuesday’s, the Indian Republic Day holiday, which gave even duds like Salaam-E-Ishq a boost in 2007, couldn’t save it.

Overseas in USA, though Bollywood producer Eros (also distributing overseas) has claimed for a moderate $334k opening off 92 screens, Veer is said to have collected only about half that ie $171k according to independent American tracking. In fact, Anil Sharma’s Gadar, with its anti-Pakistan theme did not do great overseas either. But that film created records in India with genuine intensity if not epic budget, whereas Veer’s general anti-western thrust is seen out of synch (western movies like Avatar and 2012 are doing great in India even interiors in dubbed versions), and the action attempting to be Troy/Gladiator seen as visually underwhelming by bulk of Indian public. So the film has lost on account of both, lack of legitimate emotional charge, as well as lack of visually spectacular action.

While actor Salman Khan tried to rally his fans to go to the theaters regardless of reviews or word of mouth, collections instead dropped from 20-25% opening on Friday to about 9-10% by Monday at most of the decisive stations. The film can not even be safely termed a Lal Badshah or a Maa Tujhe Salaam, two flop films elsewhere which fared reasonably well in the northern interiors single screens.

But regardless of what is being said either way right now, in the end this Salman Khan-as-Brad Pitt fare will be out fast enough from the theaters to render any further box office discussion on it irrelevant by itself.

Meanwhile, the advance for Ram Gopal Varma’s Amitabh Bachchan-Ritesh Deshmukh starrer Rann and Naseruddin Shah-Arshad Warsi-Vidya Balan Ishqiya opened in some theaters and not surprisingly, neither film has taken a bumper advance so far. Rann is a media film and Ishqiya an esotric, rustic fare. Ram Gopal Varma’s topic selections and dark & grim cameralightings are generally not conducive to huge openings (exception being the Bombay opening recordbreaker starring Bachchan, Sarkar I). While Ishqiya director Abhishek Chaubey is yet unproven as director and cast generally considered art-filmish (except for Vidya Balan). However it should be pointed out no big film in last several months in India has taken a conventional bumper advance, be it All the Best, Paa, or even 3 Idiots which is sitting on a collection goldmine right now in the end. If the films aren’t captivating enough, as Veer is showing (and Kurbaan showed earlier), no amount of trade hype, banner backing or publicity can save or even open a film. However if the content is novel and captivating, with the way public word of mouth can spread quickly over net and over mobile sms these days, and given the massive collection capacity at multiplexes which cater to the Rs. 300/ticket crowds, if the films are captivating enough, they can put up massive collections in a hurry. Incidentally, Abhishek Chaubey is the writer of Kaminey and Omkara.

Regardless, after this coming week, the next release coming onboard will be Striker starring Siddharth of Rang De Basanti fame on Feb 5.

  • Veer has done good first week business of around 32.50 crore nett. Nauman ji ur prediction about first week is ryt, now second week prediction 15 or 20 crore?

  • It is unfortunate to see so bad review of Veer.It shows all is not well in media. We will loose trust in media if this kind of unfair review and rough analysis going on.I found Veer a petriotic movie on many instances and my freinds have similar views and also i visited around 100 review sites.Kindly see the visitors comments all are Happy with Veer and against critical review of it. Veer is a petriotic movie which gives many messages of petriotism, not to harm weekers, secrifice for country, indian bravery…oppose of Veer by unfair media is opposition of Deshbhakti/Petriotism….Kindly see the crowd on BO and +ve response for this movie of common people….Thanks to Anil Sharma Ji for revolutionizing the petriotism by his petriotic movies we selute you and your team …Thanks a lot……Jai Hind

  • VEER has to perform exceedingly well in its first two weeks to recover its huge investment. Let’s wait and watch if the business shows a big jump in the coming days and the big-budget film maintains its pace at the ticket window for two complete weeks.

  • This is for u Gaur and Imran

    Veer Drops Over Second Weekend

    Tuesday 2nd February 2010 09.30 IST

    Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Veer dropped over its second weekend with around 5.25 crore nett business. The drop is around 70-75% from the first weekend. Multiplexes have seen business fall around 80-85% while single screens have fallen around 65%.

This takes the 10 day business of Veer to around 36.25 crore nett including the Telugu version. The film should add another 2.50-2.75 crore nett over the weekdays for a near 8 crore nett total for week two.

Veer is looking at lifetime business of around 42 crore nett and a distributor share of 25-26 crore. Veer is a very rare case for a big film that only 30% of its lifetime nett business will come from all India multiplexes while all the rest will be from single screens.

All u salman fans grow up accept dat his days of glory r gone, he was a superstar/ megastar in 1990s not after 2000. If u dont believe me go and chek IBOS their decade review, by averaging Amir Perfectionist Khan is no 1 and by total grossing Akshay King Kumar is no 1.

After wanted third consecutive dud MAMK, london dreams and now veer.
Before wanted also there were atleast a dozen of flops, between partner and wanted.

Please anyone dont write list of hits given by salman prior 2000, everone is aware of that like strings of flop given by d actor from 2000.

  • @aniket …Where were you when Box-office India said Veer did net business of 32.50 carore in its 1st week.Stop bringing ur hatred n using a particular source when it matches ur internal hatred 4 Salman Khan.He still is a megastar. With such bad reviews only Sallu’s Veer is able to stand up.N Salman fanz are proud of him n Veer is still an above average fare.I didn’t know Salman gave dozen flops between wanted n partner. You are sick n ridiculous.Between Partner n wanted he gave three flops Marigold,Yuvraaj and God Tussi Great Ho.Hello n Heros were his special appearances if u dun consider dat I will take Luck by chance of Aamir,SRK n Hrithik’s flop.Billu n DMG of SRK as flops.

  • Veer is a Mega FLOP – Drops badly in week two.

Veer drops 92% in week three. Disaster.

Total two week Net all India collections 38 crores.
    Week 1: 31 crores
    Week 2: 7.5 crores (75 % drop)
Week three (Fri, Sat, Sun): 1.2 crores

Veer will close with nearly 41 crores Net all India business – FLOP.
Veer has already flopped in International markets, and has been pulled from majority of
Screens in USA, UK, and UAE.

Salman Khan’s viability at box office is now in big question. Disaster.

  • hmmmmmm…oh really???? was i saying anything different all the while??? jhooth bol kar bhi peopel cud not make it run>>>tch tch tch..ab what will these people do??? i think they will do two wks of mourning ..yeh to flop ki baap nikli this veer,,,tch tch tch sooooo sad…

  • Excuse me miss Megha, collections of veer r not so bad as u r saying, but its prooved tht veer has been watched more than the biggie of last years.

  • To all salman flop, disaster khan fans where r u all, gone for a sleep. Go and check all prominent movie sites how veer has fared at the box office, ha ha ha. BOI has declared it below average fare.

Salman is this, salman is that, he has huge fan following, insha allah so many articles were written but of no use now.

Celebrations have started for giving third consecutive dud at d box office, i mean hattrick of duds.

ab mu mat chupao aur samne aao! INSHA ALLAh.

  • @Aniket ..Do u know what INSHALLAH means ??? It means (Agar ALLAH ne chaha tu : If ALLAH wishes to).You ppl not only are stupid but u have no respect for others religion.BOI has declared Veer (Hindi) version as below average. When Telgu version is added it will get an average tag.Coz BOI has declared that in two weeks DS of Veer includiing Telgu version is 23.5 carores n after 3 weeks DS is going to be 25 to 26 carores.Coz of which it becomes average\above average.Learn manners b4 pasting something.

@Atish Khan ..See my reply 4 Aniket n open ur eyes. You ppl just use a source 4 negative things only where were u ppl when BOI was praisng Veer????

    @megha ..Thnx 4 the entertainment …keep it up !!!

  • @ Hina..
1st of all I am really very very sorry.
I dint ment 2 hurt anybodys sentiments and thanks for making me understand meaning of af insha allah i wil never write it again, I respect ur and everybody’s religion, actually I dint mean it dat way but d way i wrote i am sorry.

Coming back 2 veer I din liked d movie at all and d day I saw it I knew it wil b a disaster but due 2 initial hype n republic day holiday it saved from a verdict of disaster

And hina I dont hate salman I liked his Yuvraj very much but it was a disaster and I after wathching partner it was such a faltu film, I din liked it at allll but it was a Blockbuster and very few films in d whole world get appreciation which partner got, remember (if u dont know) its 7 am shows on first day were over flooded (houseful).

Salman without a doubt is d most popular actor in India but whatever litle I know his fan following base is in small towns, slums more than cities or rich people (Standard Class) I dosent mean not a single men from high society dosent like him there r people but few.
From 1989 to 1999 he gave so many hits but if u compare him from 2000 to 2009 his graph has come down it terms of hits, he is giving so many flops and few hits. His popularity is same or even getting more n more day by day (no doubt).
I think from d beginning of previous decade cd and dvd became cheaper with tv at almost every home and 2 top it pirated cds are available before films get relesed so thousands of people watch it at home and dont go 2 theater and the people who do dis often r poor people. This may b d 1 of d reason why his films r bombing at box office.

Lastly i m not anti-salman, i liked his so many song, performences etc he is d industry as a hero from 1988 and I was born in 1986, he superstar/megastar since decades, but whatever i write is true, i wrote whatever in d past for salman or for anybody else was true be it from boi or any other site is true statemants, U and all should accept it the way I accepted meaning of god from u.

  • Hi Hina,Aniket even don’t know the meaning of ‘inshah-allah’,so I think he is mentally not strong to understand an epic period film.Thts why he is talking rubbish.Bacha hai abhi,Jumbo ke pitne ke baad bahut time se bacho ke liye animated films nhi aayi hai to bahak gaya hai.N litil master Aniket, veer has earned over 50 crores all over the world,n thts only coz of salman’s star power.Akki ki cc2c,Shahrukh ki paheli,n Aamir ki Mela to thode bht ache reviews ke baad bhi veer ka aadha bhi nhi kama paayi thi.N waise bhi veer ne wahan jyada business kiya hai jahan ticket 50-60 ka hai,so movie is still goin on.

  • @Aniket ..Apology accepted 4 INSHALLAH.Even I was born in 1986 n i have followed Salman since 1989 till date.His graph has certainly not been dat great in 2000 – 2009 as compared to his 1990’s record.But he is a superstar.But when u c aamir’s or akki’s 90’s record Salman’s 2000- 2009 record is far better than them.

Now if u really respect Salman n if u also like him what to u mean by this remark::

“To all salman flop, disaster khan fans where r u all, gone for a sleep” ???? This is really disgusting and not acceptable.N I have seen ur remarks since beginning u have tried to down Veer.If u didnt like it just say it y u r behaving so badly ??? N for GOD Sake Veer is not flop I have explained u the whole scenario in my last comment.Better understand.

N if so many poor ppl love Salman dat shows his Charisma in real manner.N I have seen so many educated n rich ppl loving Salman too so plz change ur thinking. Now if u say that to Salman let me tell u decent families hate Akki n his vulgar movies but Still he is a megastar so its stupidity to comment on fan-following of these big stars.

@Ayush ..Hi,I have tried my best to explain Mr.Aniket :)

  • Ok I made an apology in a nice manner, but u people r not understanding.
This is from search India.com, I was not going 2 post this article as its written in a bad language but u hina not listening so take this. And I have not written this, it is written by Search India.com and this is what they have 2 say abt veer.

Veer Box Office – Salman ‘Flop’ Khan Fails Again
Folks, are you really surprised that Salman ‘Flop‘ Khan has delivered yet another dud at the box office.

The numbers are out and yes, Salman Khan’s latest crap-show Veer has fared badly at the box office (the U.S. box office that is).

    What’s new!
After all, it’s a Salman ‘Flop’ Khan movie. Can it be anything but a dud at the box office.

For the January 22-24, 2010 opening weekend at the U.S. box office, Veer had a total gross of a mere $334,562. Less than junk like Dil Bhole Hadippa and slightly more than garbage like Bhoothnath.

If that’s not a mighty big shame we don’t know what is.

In case you are wondering, Veer had a fairly wide release in the U.S. (92 theatres). But to no avail, right?

Yes, Veer’s average gross of just $3,637 is pathetic.

Guys, if we’ve said it once we’ve said it a thousand times – these days, Salman Khan is the kiss of death for a movie.

Look at the below table to see how badly Salman Khan’s movies have done at the U.S. box office (for your convenience Salman Khan’s movies are marked in red color):

  • @Aniket ..hahaha Sum ppl just dun understand.I am talking about Indian Box Office. There are lots of sites on net which have even declared Veer a hit.But one should be wise enough to use his or her mind.N sum media wants money n Sallu can’t pay them coz he has his own charity. Now avoid pasting crap things. You only paste on Veer thread dat shows ur mental caliber to me.N whateva u wana think or understand do it ur way.In Salman Bahe’s fans hearts he is a winner everyday.Do whateva u want by this u r only increasing my Love 4 Salman Khan….
