Trade Pundits predict doom for My Name Is Khan

Strong words from some of the trade analysts on My Name Is Khan, three well known trade pundits speak.

Komal Nahta – My Name Is Khan is far from entertaining and also too boring for the general masses. For the heavy budget at which it has been made, it will keep its worldwide distributors (Fox Searchlight) in the red. Business in big cities, especially in South India, Muslim centers and overseas will be better but it will be below the mark in North India as also in smaller centers and single-screen cinemas. It may be appreciated by the class audience but the masses will reject the film.

Vinod Mirani – The curiosity value is over, it seems. The picture has suffered a considerable drop in collections on Monday,

The most shocking words though came from Amod Mehra, another well know Trade Analyst “At this moment, it appears the film will not be able to recover the cost because it has been sold at a high price.” On the film receiving 5 star reviews, he said “Earlier there were paid previews of the film, now there is paid review of the film.”

  • Guys Karan ka adarsh is showing 34cr weekend for MNIK. hahaha
He has included his fees in MNIK collection. Wow he has disclosed his fees 4.5cr isn’t it???

  • ‘My Name Is Khan’ Breaks One-Day Sales Record For Bollywood Films In USEarning $761,000 on Sunday, the highest one-day earning ever for any Hindi movie in North America, Karan Johar’s “My Name Is Khan” is on a record-hitting spree at ‘BO’.

In the starting, SRK-starrer was likely to go down by 7% over Saturday to $682,000. However, it did well on Sunday making $761,000 for a 4% surge.

The Fox Searchlight release’s revised opening weekend estimation for February 12-14 now stands at $1,939,000, still a new record high for a Bollywood flick beating up the $1,764,131 of 2007 film “OSO.”

MNIK averaged a stellar $16,158 from 120 movie halls across US as well as Canada in just three days.

Movie halls across US reported sold-out shows and have had to turn viewers’ away.

“MNIK” is approximated to earn $336,000 on Monday, Presidents’ Day, taking the estimated 4-day opening weekend digit to $2,275,000.

This makes MNIK the best Hindi movie ever to hit the $2,000,000 mark hitting the earlier record of 5 days set in Dec 2009 by Aamir-starrer “3 Idiots” which earned $2,149,227 in five days.

MNIK also produced the maximum per-theatre average of any flick in North American release this weekend. (With Input from Agencies)

  • All Rubbish – Such reviews & comments are definitely a black spot on Bollywood future only when a Person of SRL calibre who has probably done his Best so far in MNIK has to listen such pathetic reviews from ppl who dont hv any class except fighting like monkeys over a comparisn b/w SRK , Aamir

SRK & Aamir Dont need your weird reviews & cooments now – They are Epitomes of Excellence & Will always be , So pls dont waste your time & energies & Rather Compliment these Wonderful ppl born in India giving Indians the Opportunity to Raise their Flag High across Globe

    Am Proud of you SRK

  • The most shocking words though came from Amod Mehra, another well know Trade Analyst “At this moment, it appears the film will not be able to recover the cost because it has been sold at a high price.+1

    thats never ends

    for this @ above words

the same words were said by some critics after giving mover average 1.5 to 2.5 stars to veer but then also sallu star power recover its huge budjet and also made haapy to many territories distributors and

now mnik turns after giving average 3 stars to film only srk power can bring huge budjet of film back like sallu star power had done for veer and even veer is clear winner in single screen across …

mnik lost impact to single screen let see what is going to happening with upcomings day in multiplex also ?

its mine feel also that mnik dont have that much impact to even break ghajni records 3 diots is to far

its only srk mesaage act of my name is khan and i am not the terrorist let film to even take a good start and it doesnt have that much impact to bring universal audience to watch it even 1 times like ghajni ,

3 idots ,veer had that much impact that it can bring and already doned to watch these movies min 2 times to max every ones wish specially 3 idots watched by max audience in multiplex min 2 times added film ahuge collections

after then it mnik will have go around same verdict of veer overall below average till yet and hit in some territories due to srk good image in uk crowd specially

my feels latest updates for indicine article =Vote: 3 Khans 3 Films in 3 months – Your pick?

aamir khan gr888 , sallu bhai gr888 only for message with srk act mnik gr888

    but as a whole film

3 idots gr888 that means my rating is more than 5***** +stars

veer gr888 again more than 5*****+stars

mnik gr88 4****stars only for message with srk act in mnik

  • TO Amit –

The difference between MNIK and 3 Idiots is not 1.5 crores. ITs 13 crores for the weekend. Please check http://www.boxofficeIndia.com. I think what you are saying is for worldwide. It will be interesting to see as 3 idiots only show 12% drop in the USA in the second weekend and film was superstrong on the weekdays also. UK was also strong after the first weekend. I doubt MNIK can sustain that. I think MNIK might get closer to Ghajni but not 3 idiots. I think MNIK will finish India with 110 crores and the US with 5 million dollars.

  • does anyone know VEER is kicked out in second weekend in USA and showed a drop more than 60% in india.

and now being kicked out from many multiplexes and single screens because MY Name is Khan has arrived.

I am pretty sure mnik will be having long run as no big release is due anymore.

Veer is thrown by critics and audience too.

fact is Mnik is too good to be compared to VeeR and slightly better than 3 idiots .

Rounding off the ratings 5 stars as full scale……..

VeeR * 1 star flopped and kicked out…..

3idiots **** 4 star superblocukbuster and hugely welcomed on christmas week …..

Mnik ***** 5 star hugely welcomed on valentine week , wait for verdict until second weekend …..

  • If MNIK does not do well in every part of India ( 3 idiots did and ghajani did ) then it is not consider a blockbuster as there will be some parts in red ( loss ) in India which is very likely to happen.

Box Office: Kurban 2. MNIK embarks on a Monday crash pattern, set to flop

    Monday, February 15, 2010
As expected, boosted by the Pakistani/mideast populations, My Name is Khan got the initial response overseas but not Hollywood-challenging to the tune of $1.8 mil in USA in gross where they are incidentally celebrating the President’s day weekend. But more importantly, the post-release reports neither there in America nor especially in the mainland India are painting a good sign for the Shahrukh Khan-Kajol film in the days to come.

Across the country, the post-release reports are flat out mixed to very poor, belying the 5 and occassionally even 5.5 star scale-exceeding ratings that were relayed ahead of the release in Indian media. This incidentally had happened with Kurbaan too. Quite the contrary are the public reports of this movie.

Infact when it’s all said and done, Karan Johar and Shahrukh Khan may actually thank Shiv Sena for creating enough controversy for the film to manage a respectable collection in the opening weekend in the metros atleast.

Because the actual box office pattern for MNIK in India went like this:

On Friday the film could not release as planned in Maharashtra, North Karnataka, parts of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Orissa and even a couple places in Delhi-UP. It lost out in major centers like Pune, Nasik altogether. In Mumbai, India’s biggest center where it was to release on over 105 theaters, when it released on afternoon shows it was in only handful of multiplexes (Fun republic etc.), MNIK took to 70-75% occupancies which was below expectation considering the media frenzy. In the interiors as reported occupancies were dismal, in the tune of 25-30% (even lesser in many cases).

On Saturday, the film did release in about 49 halls in Mumbai and in afternoon in Pune. This continued through Saturday evening till the terror blasts shook Pune putting Pune back to square one. Nonetheless Saturday and Sunday saw pickups for the film recording 80-95% collections in majority of multiplexes across the board which is quite good.

But after the curiosity triggered by the various controversies, the merits of the film as a box office power have to take over, and this is where the Karan Johar-Shahrukh Khan-Kajol film is unable to stand the test. The cracks for the film started around Sunday night shows, even as most of Sunday was advance booked on Saturday itself.

But Monday tends to be a make or break situation for any film, regardless of controversy or not. The worst fear for MNIK apart from the tensions of Friday would have been the much feared Monday crash, and unfortunately for the film now, that is indeed happening as Monday morning opened nationally to poor to dismal response compared to Friday which wasn’t all that to begin with, and advance for Monday night is not showing much hope. In some multiplexes where Sunday went 85-90%. Monday is looking to end up doing just 8-9% (though some are around 30%).

The situation is somewhat better in Hyderabad and Delhi which has a sizeable muslim population but it may not hold there either as it has gone down in the nearby regions. Same in Jaipur, Kanpur, Ahmedabad etc.

The Karan Johar film never had much of a chance in the interiors of India and can already be dubbed a flop there. At this point, the 100 crore Fox Star Studios venture which has been billed as followup to Slumdog Millionaire, needs over 250+ crore gross revenues; but it is likely going to end up coming up short and lose by a long distance.

  • amit bete rote nahi hain my name is khan starts as a burden and ends as a burden.

  • bete azeem go and check out the box office india site they have misprinted it as veer instead of mnik i know you are a big srk fan and thinking me of doing tricks but sorry mate i am not like srk fans who do this type of thing and cant you understand from the figures in the bracket and the report clearly suggests mnik huge drop nearly 80% yahoo

  • hi dipen do you look the desperate srk fans behaviour they think that i have posted the veer figures i know even they know it as they might have already seen it on boi site but trying to be innocent .

    azeem dont cry

  • @Azeem

Congratulations to all SRK fans On monday mnik films drop is HISTORIC around 80% at multiplex & 90% at single screens .

So biggest DISASTER of 2010 &

Also biggest DISASTER of the DECADE .

    Dont mind its reality .

  • yahoo srk is no longer even the ghulam of the bollywood. i think this the biggest turnaround in the decade srk is dethroned from the position of most popular actor even the collections are due to high price of ticket in multiplex but the popularity once srk hold in india has almost become negilgible jsut think even after this kind of promotion and reviews it will be a def flop in india.

srk fans are saying mumabi causes 2cr on first day then first count the benifits which mnik take from the controversy it helps the film to get a good start otherwise it might not even take a 5cr start

  • Dipen & Nitesh. First of all i m Salman khan true fan and i hate srk.
Nitesh they didn’t misprint, same article posted by dipen it is right.

  • Taran Adarsh is such a mischievous person that he is showing Veer as flop in his ratings and unnecessarily showing MNIK weekend collections as 33.5 crores… This is d limit of biasing… Just because he is paid so mch by SRK,he is actually contradicting with BOI. And Salman nd Veer makers dint even pay him a buck nd Salman bashed him too badly,he is again contradicting wid BOI(which says below average). What a paidcow.. Just one word for him….SU***K IT Idiot

  • sorry azeem i have checked your comments above initially i thought you are a srk fan sorry .

i posted it before dipen and at that time it was veer. but i think main thing is the line which states huge drop for mnik. and sorry again for calling you a srk fan

  • nitesh mai tera beta nahi tera baap hu , mujhe rone ki koi jarurat nahi hai .

regrading film’s crash on monday , it is a bit surprising.

  • @amit & all SRK fans overseas ke collections kyon dikha rahe ho . India ki bhi collections dikhao . Joh film India mein nahi chalti woh film DISASTER kahi jati hai . Understand guys . India mein toh mnik DISASTEWR hai . ( monday+tuesday)

  • azeem dipen just look at the condition of amit behachara koi use mental hospital bhejo yehi hoto hai agar review kharidoge .

  • Deepak

    chill down dude

taran adarsh had already recived his appreciations against its impure ratings with @ above words from indicine

on reality the truth is now on his shows

despite been let down by impure critics like taran veer had recover its huge budjets

and till yet overall below average and hit in some territories
