Trade Pundits predict doom for My Name Is Khan

Strong words from some of the trade analysts on My Name Is Khan, three well known trade pundits speak.

Komal Nahta – My Name Is Khan is far from entertaining and also too boring for the general masses. For the heavy budget at which it has been made, it will keep its worldwide distributors (Fox Searchlight) in the red. Business in big cities, especially in South India, Muslim centers and overseas will be better but it will be below the mark in North India as also in smaller centers and single-screen cinemas. It may be appreciated by the class audience but the masses will reject the film.

Vinod Mirani – The curiosity value is over, it seems. The picture has suffered a considerable drop in collections on Monday,

The most shocking words though came from Amod Mehra, another well know Trade Analyst “At this moment, it appears the film will not be able to recover the cost because it has been sold at a high price.” On the film receiving 5 star reviews, he said “Earlier there were paid previews of the film, now there is paid review of the film.”

  • Boxofficeindia :

My Name Is Khan held steady on Monday with around 5.25 crore nett collections. The first day collections were around 8 crore nett but that was without most of Maharashtra. The film is being helped by very steady collections at higher end multiplexes in the metroes.

The collections in Delhi/UP have dropped in the 40-45% region while South and Bengal is around 50% as compared to Friday. Single screens in Muslim centres are also faring well. Mumbai/Thane and Pune also saw good collections on Monday but Gujarat had a noticeable drop. Circuits like CP Berar, CI and Rajasthan have seen 60-65% falls as compared to Friday.

My Name Is Khan stands at nearly 35 crore nett after four days and it should finish the week at around 46-47 crore nett which would be the third highest first week ever after Three Idiots and Ghajini.

  • By indiaabroad Thursday Feb 18 5:10 PM ::: New Delhi, Feb 18 (IANS) After a bumper opening, Shah Rukh Khan starrer ‘My Name Is Khan’ is being cold-shouldered by the audience here. Cinema hall owners blame the ‘non-entertaining content’ of the movie.
‘There is a huge fall in ‘My Name Is Khan’ ticket sales. While it was just 30 percent Wednesday, it is only 20 percent Thursday. The film is not being appreciated because of the content,’ Amit Awasthi, manager (programming and operations) of Spice Cinemas, told IANS.
‘The entertainment aspect in the movie is zero. Thought is has some emotions, there is nothing much to offer,’ he added. A source in PVR cinemas echoed the news. ‘Our occupancy has fallen from around 90 percent to 50 percent Monday onwards because of the content of the movie. We are guessing it will stretch to one week more,’ said the source.

  • The success of a movie is judged by the amount of business it does and in most of the world the collections tell which film has been watched by more people and this determines the success of the film. But in India sadly the actual collections do not tell which film has been watched by more people unless you thoroughly segregate the collections. In India its the admissions rather than collections which tell a more accurate story as collection range is so different between single screens and multiplexes.

An example of this is the first day collections of My Name Is Khan in a big single screen in Uttar Pradesh and a major multiplex in Uttar Pradesh. My Name Is Khan collected 1,18,961 nett at Heer in Kanpur and the admissions here were 4,195. At Fun in Agra the same film collected 1,32,032 nett and the admissions here were 1,543. This shows that the single screen theatre had nearly three times the attendance but still a lower collection. What must be remembered here is that Fun in Agra has low ticket costs for a multiplex and Heer in Kanpur is one of the better single screens in India. Comparing with an upmarket multiplex then we have PVR Bangalore which had a collection of 5,15,084 nett for My Name Is Khan with admissions of 2,149. If we compare PVR Bangalore with Heer in Kanpur its more than four times the collection but just half the admissions.

This is the biggest indicator that collections do not show how many people are actually watching a particular film in India. It is likely that 5 crore nett business from single screens would give the same amount of admissions as 20 crore nett business from multiplexes. This is also why that despite much lower collections a film like Tashan is watched by more people than outright multiplex grossers like Taare Zameen Par and Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na and a Veer is watched by more people than Super Hit films like Love Aaj Kal or Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani. It is also likely that a Wanted with less nett collections than a Love Aaj Kal is actually been watched by twice the number of people at the theatres.

  • Indicine I really miss you a lot last few days . Congratulations for your new version . Honestly I dont like background colour of the page . Earlier one is better than this background colour. Black Or other colours should be good . Thanks

    • Srilanka012345, I think its just about getting used to the new colors. Once you spend more time on the site, you’ll get used to it. Overall, the feedback to the new colors is good. But some have complained that its slightly on the brighter side, so we’ll try and make it a little more darker. :)

      Thanks

    MNIK : Box-office Disappointment

MNIK disappoints at box-office and has collected only 41 Crore in first week. All India occupancy rate for first week is 44%. Movie enjoyed good initial on first four days but there was hardly any footfalls on last day of week. Thursday collection was 2.25 Crore only. Friday opened to very poor response on morning shows and noon shows is likely to be in same range. Evening shows of Friday generally gain some decent audience, this remains to see if this happen with MNIK as well. Unless there is significant improvement in evening shows, Second Friday collection of MNIK will be in range of 2.5 Crore.
