Komal Nahta – My Name Is Khan is far from entertaining and also too boring for the general masses. For the heavy budget at which it has been made, it will keep its worldwide distributors (Fox Searchlight) in the red. Business in big cities, especially in South India, Muslim centers and overseas will be better but it will be below the mark in North India as also in smaller centers and single-screen cinemas. It may be appreciated by the class audience but the masses will reject the film.
Vinod Mirani – The curiosity value is over, it seems. The picture has suffered a considerable drop in collections on Monday,
The most shocking words though came from Amod Mehra, another well know Trade Analyst “At this moment, it appears the film will not be able to recover the cost because it has been sold at a high price.” On the film receiving 5 star reviews, he said “Earlier there were paid previews of the film, now there is paid review of the film.”

guys, MNIK is not an entertaining movie, you’ll not even find any dance sequence (leave the item songs) there. but reviews are not based on entertainment value. i heard from my friends that shawshank redemption (imdb ranking 1) is a boring movie. still, its the no 1. MNIK is a good film undoubtedly. 5 stars may be too high, but it deserves at least 4.
i dont see any point to blame srk for low ratings of veer. i haven’t seen it yet. MNIK may suffer drop only for one reason : over hype. people are expecting too much, as a result they are getting disappionted.
and i think 20th century fox must has some brains, otherwise they wouldn’t be such a huge and successful name. if they felt the movie has no prospects, they would never had bought it.
whether the movie does below average business or becomes a blockbuster time will tell. it is to be noted that fox will release this movie in 25 non traditional countries in the upcoming months, which will boost the net profit.

Have got to say that i’ve never been that much of a fan of SRK, prefer Amitabh Bachan and Hritikh Roshan.
From what i understand reading around your site Indicine, his new film has broken the record for highest opening weekend in UK and USA, plus it has also taken the highest opening day and weekend overseas, Also from what I understand it was second in the overall opening weekend for a Bollywood film worldwide, missing the top by a mere 2-3 crore! Wow!
The guys got a brain and hes not afraid to use it, im not sure wether the Shiv Sena stuff is for real or not, i think it is as the Shiv Sena have done this before, they are also Anti-Muslim so I reckon they where waiting for there chance, but still SRK did well not to aplogise, therefore making the whole of India aware of his film and and also overseas, what a player! Guys got guts and his film got free publicity everywhere, even here in the UK, newspapers like the Daily Mirror had coverage of the controversy. Guy is the king of publicity, he may have lost quite a few fans for these stunts, branded “cheap” by many on this site, but he gets another admirer in me.
I havent seen this film, My Name is Khan, and i dont intend do, the last film i watched with Shahrukh Khan was Main Hoon Na. My family saw the film on friday ,they thought it was good, but my mum said that the 2nd half dragged on unnecesarily.

Guys the movie has fallen flat in single screens with 15 -20 % attendence on monday which is hard to improve further.. multiplexes are falling to 20 – 25% and people feel disappointed though they claim the subject was good..
nevertheless, having a huge amount to recover, the movie is going to face hard times as there is no enertainment quotient and the associated repeat value.
some of my friends complaint about its length and other reported the movie is ok but it lacks the natural element..
Fox have reported 9.2 million USD gross from India over the weekend. At this moment 1 USD = 46.5 INR.
9.2 Million USD = 42.8 cr Gross = 0.6*42.8 = 25.7 cr NETT
BOI has straightaway reported 29.5 cr Nett. BOI supporters may now say well the conversion factor is 65% , but that bull was never accepted for any other movie earlier.
The fact that MNIK needs over-reporting right after the opening weekend says the story itself.
As for BOI they show their true colors once again. Of course IBOS will give another ridiculous low number, but that will not be an excuse for BOI.

Mumbai, Feb 15 (IANS) Shah Rukh Khan starrer ‘My Name is Khan’ has grossed an estimated $18 million at the worldwide box office in its first weekend.
A love story set against the backdrop of racial discrimination post 9/11, ‘My Name Is Khan’ has struck a chord with audiences around the world.
‘The most exciting part is that the worldwide collections jumped every day from Friday to Saturday to Sunday. This shows that the audience is absolutely loving Rizwan and Mandira (the lead characters),’ Vijay Singh, CEO Fox Star Studios, the Indian distributor of the film, said in a statement.
The film features Shah Rukh as Rizwan Khan who embarks on a journey across America to win back the love of his life, Mandira, played by Kajol. It shows how, along the way, his personality touches the lives of many and inspires a nation.
Filmmaker Karan Johar is ecstatic at the reaction.
‘I am overwhelmed by the unprecedented audience response for our film. The audience has the power, and more power to them,’ Karan Johar said in a press release.
The movie is being marketed and distributed by Fox Star in India, in the US by its sister company Fox Searchlight, and in the rest of the world by parent group company 20th Century Fox International.
In India, despite the issues in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Indore and other centres on Friday and part of Saturday, the film has opened exceptionally well. In states where the film opened normally, including Delhi-Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, the collections have been the highest ever.

As expected, boosted by the Pakistani/mideast populations, My Name is Khan got the initial response overseas but not Hollywood-challenging to the tune of $1.8 mil in USA in gross where they are incidentally celebrating the President’s day weekend. But more importantly, the post-release reports neither there in America nor especially in the mainland India are painting a good sign for the Shahrukh Khan-Kajol film in the days to come.
Across the country, the post-release reports are flat out mixed to very poor, belying the 5 and occassionally even 5.5 star scale-exceeding ratings that were relayed ahead of the release in Indian media. This incidentally had happened with Kurbaan too. Quite the contrary are the public reports of this movie.
Infact when it’s all said and done, Karan Johar and Shahrukh Khan may actually thank Shiv Sena for creating enough controversy for the film to manage a respectable collection in the opening weekend in the metros atleast.
Because the actual box office pattern for MNIK in India went like this:
On Friday the film could not release as planned in Maharashtra, North Karnataka, parts of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Orissa and even a couple places in Delhi-UP. It lost out in major centers like Pune, Nasik altogether. In Mumbai, India’s biggest center where it was to release on over 105 theaters, when it released on afternoon shows it was in only handful of multiplexes (Fun republic etc.), MNIK took to 70-75% occupancies which was below expectation considering the media frenzy. In the interiors as reported occupancies were dismal, in the tune of 25-30% (even lesser in many cases).
On Saturday, the film did release in about 49 halls in Mumbai and in afternoon in Pune. This continued through Saturday evening till the terror blasts shook Pune putting Pune back to square one. Nonetheless Saturday and Sunday saw pickups for the film recording 80-95% collections in majority of multiplexes across the board which is quite good.
But after the curiosity triggered by the various controversies, the merits of the film as a box office power have to take over, and this is where the Karan Johar-Shahrukh Khan-Kajol film is unable to stand the test. The cracks for the film started around Sunday night shows, even as most of Sunday was advance booked on Saturday itself.
But Monday tends to be a make or break situation for any film, regardless of controversy or not. The worst fear for MNIK apart from the tensions of Friday would have been the much feared Monday crash, and unfortunately for the film now, that is indeed happening as Monday morning opened nationally to poor to dismal response compared to Friday which wasn’t all that to begin with, and advance for Monday night is not showing much hope. In some multiplexes where Sunday went 85-90%. Monday is looking to end up doing just 8-9% (though some are around 30%).
The situation is somewhat better in Hyderabad and Delhi which has a sizeable muslim population but it may not hold there either as it has gone down in the nearby regions. Same in Jaipur, Kanpur, Ahmedabad etc.
The Karan Johar film never had much of a chance in the interiors of India and can already be dubbed a flop there. At this point, the 100 crore Fox Star Studios venture which has been billed as followup to Slumdog Millionaire, needs over 250+ crore gross revenues; but it is likely going to end up coming up short and lose by a long distance.

The movie is getting a really good response overseas – I saw it for myself – if the huge crowds outside the movie halls are anything to go by. Surely, this is an overrated movie – deserved a max of 3.5/5.
I think the problem with all of us is that, we all read a hell lot of reviews , paid or not, and end up in a situation where there is no curiosity left and go to the movies just to agree or disagree with the reviewers and may be even try to find out points the reviewers might have missed. It’s that critical mentality of ours – crept in to all of us due to over exposure to reviews – that’s the real spoilsport here. To add to that, the reviews are full of spoilers which take out the suspense factor completely. So it’s up to us to decide whether you want to enjoy the movie or analyze it or to put in simple words, watch the movie before reading the reviews or otherwise.

Drop was expected on working day as usual , this is not a new thing.
But MNIK got second biggest weekend for a bollywood movie after 3 idiots and just fell short of 1.5 crore .
We know if there is no release issue in MAHARASHTRA, GUJRAT, ASAM ….., the film could have easily surpassed 3idiots .

Even if mnik does a business of 100 cr net in India and 70 cr overseas (both figures are difficult to achieve looking at the trending), then also fox will be loosing. 100 cr net in India will give distributor share of 50 cr as this movie is running well in multiplexes only. Now as screen rental is quite high overseas, 60 cr gross would mean 30 cr profit for distributors, making it a total of 80 cr. As fox has bough this film close to 100 cr, it will be loosing money even under most favourable circumstances. I somwwhere read that mnik needs 250 cr gross for breakeven, which i did not believe initially but seems correct now.
Also, i dont expect this movie to break 3i record overseas, as 3i went on a dream run in us, the biggest market for a bollywood film. Check box office mojo, it fell just 9% in second week, a figure which is difficult to be achieved even by a hollywood movie.
Media is still promoting mnik, yesterday, a half an hour program was being aired on a tiny news channel p7news, titled “Idiots se bada badshah”. It was reported in the program that mnik has done more business than 3i. Now, from where the hell they get this figure, only god knows.
NDTV airs mnik’s so called success story every half an hour, although, one of the trade expert yesterday mentioned that business is good but not mind blowing.
