Shenaz Treasurywala’s Open Letter to PM, Bachchan, SRK, Salman and Aamir!

Dear Narendra Modi, Amitabh Bachchan, Sachin Tendulkar, Shahrukh Khan, Salman Khan, Aamir Khan and Anil Ambani,

I am writing to YOU specifically because you are the most powerful and influential MEN in our country.

I am writing to you as a woman who grew up in a middle class family in Mumbai.

I am writing to YOU for HELP!

My parents may not like me saying this. I apologize to them if they are reading but this is NOT MY SHAME. It’s THIER SHAME.

My first experience with the opposite sex, was when I was just 13 and groped by a man (never saw his face but will never forget his hand) while walking in the vegetable market with my mom. She had just given me the worst haircut and as an angry teenager I was upset at her and was lagging behind as she walked ahead. I still remember what I was wearing. It was her dress, mustard with flowers and little bow in the front. How I hate that dress! As if, it was the dress’s fault.

I was shocked at first. Speechless. He disappeared. I just stood there. Tears started pouring out of my innocent eyes. I told my mom who went mad screaming in the market but who knew where that man disappeared to. I still remember the dirty feeling I had and the number of times I showered in my grand-mom’s bathroom after. That feeling never went away.

Since then it was non-stop. I would try to articulate this to my parents and while my mom understood, my dad and uncles told me I was imagining it. Maybe they just couldn’t deal with it. CAN YOU?

When I was 15, I started going by train and bus to St. Xaviers’ College. I was groped and touched and from all angles and this was just how I grew up. Not Just Me but MOST INDIAN WOMEN who don’t have the luxury of cars and drivers.

As a teenager I would dream of and still sometimes dream that I had a machine gun and could kill all the men who tried to grope me. A very disturbing dream for a kid, don’t you think?

I got my first assignment as a model in the FYJC and I had to go to screen-tests straight from college. So I had to dress nice, didn’t make it any easier. I specifically remember the time I went for an audition in a red body suit and a black long skirt with slits. It was HELL! I never wore that again. As if it was the dress’s fault.

I developed ways to defend myself, I always carried a bag in front of me, my fist was always clenched, I always turned around every 20 seconds to check who was behind me and a few times I slapped men who touched me, I got slapped back many times too. Sometimes saved by the public, MOST TIMES NOT.

My mom begged me not to pick fights with men who touched me, she was afraid of acid being thrown at me or that somebody someday would hurt me badly. She is STILL AFRAID and today she told me not to take an UBER to my meeting tomorrow. Hell ya. BAN UBER! Make everyone take responsibility for this.

My sister got into Sophia’s college, we were all excited. She went by bus but the first day she came home, she sobbed traumatized. A man had put his hand in her tee-shirt through her sleeve, the entire bus ride. She just froze. She was a kid too and wasn’t equipped to even understand this. I was LIVID. I’m sorry sis for telling the world this, please don’t stop speaking to me. IT’S NOT Our Shame. It’s THEIRS!

One of my friends in college was RAPED on the train on her way home in the ladies compartment. She was sick and was going home in the 11:15 break. There was nobody in the first class compartment going back to Bandra at that time, it was a superfast meaning it didn’t stop at most stations. He raped her and then jumped off after using her scrunchy (hair tie) to wipe himself. She was the only one on the train and had to limp her way back to her home in Bandra, bleeding profusely. She was just 16. This she felt was her shame so she did not say anything to anyone.

BUT IT ISN’T HER SHAME, it’s THEIR SHAME.

My mom accompanied me to Hyderabad on a shoot once. In churi bazaar, a cyclist groped My MOM. My dear respected and lovely MOM.

Sorry Mom, IT’S NOT Our Shame, It’s THEIR SHAME.

Why am I telling you my personal story?

Well first I want all women to Speak Up.

Let’s make this our MOTTO-

It’s not OUR SHAME, it’s THEIR SHAME.

Who are “THEY”?

“THEY” ARE THE MEN IN OUR COUNTRY.

Not just the rapists and the sexual offenders and gropers but also our Fathers (sorry dad) and Uncles and Brothers and MOVIE STARS AND CRICKETERS AND POLITICIANS for not SAVING US or PROTECTING US by insisting and protesting for the LAWS TO CHANGE and Rapists and Gropers to BE PUNISHED SEVERELY!

Why do we as women have to feel so threatened? WHY has there been no severe action taken? This has gone on for years now. Not just in Delhi but all over our country and yes even in BOMBAY OR MUMBAI OR Whatever the hell you want to call it! It’s NOT SAFE. NO!

My biggest fear ever since I was kid and even today when I walk back home at night from yoga or when I take a rickshaw from a friend’s home is being RAPED. I still feel that fear. I am still am on guard. I still fantasize of having that MACHINE GUN.

In the past 4 years I have been living and working half in India and half in New York and let me tell you I have walked the streets of Harlem, the Bronx and Brooklyn (perceived as the most dangerous in NYC) at3am after parties in short skirts and felt safer than I feel in Bandra at 10 pm on a quiet road fully covered. WHY??

Let’s talk about Delhi our Capital. I was there 2 days ago and the day of the rape. I wanted to go out and walk by India Gate and admire our great monuments but could I?! Why??

What good are all your speeches in the US or Japan or AUSTRALIA- NAMO, if no woman can walk freely in the streets even in broad daylight by herself in the CAPITAL OF OUR COUNTRY. Isn’t this a SHAME? SHAME ON YOU SIR.

This is our NO1 issue. FIX THIS before anything else.

This is a SHAME. And it’s YOUR SHAME. You are now RESPONSIBLE FOR US.

I beg all of you fine gentlemen that I have addressed to help change the LAW.

You are powerful men. I say, SHAME and PUNISH THE Gropers and Sexual offenders severely. KILL THE RAPISTS.

I won’t ask for public castration which is what I want and all the women want because I know this is unrealistic and things move SO DAMN SLOW in our FINE NATION.

All I ask for is the -Death Penalty Please. NOW! QUICK!

If that’s too hard or will take too long then at least LIFE IMPRISONMENT.

Put them away forever.

Why was this man who had raped twice before out on bail?

And then given a drivers license? YES, BAN UBER TOO. Make everyone responsible.

I’m ready to do anything. I’m not a big enough celeb but you Sachin Tendulkar, Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan, Sharukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Anil Ambani SIRS- need to speak up as MEN ( you are the men with the power)

SAVE US!

Please demand the Death Sentence for the Rapists.

NO BAIL. Just Death.

Superstars I beg you, please take a stand. Use your Superstardom and Power and MONEY and save the women of our country. SAVE US!

I urge you to protest or go on a fast or do something DRASTIC so people take notice, the government wakes up and CHANGES the LAW so these men are terrified to touch us.

Death to rapists. No bail. Just death.

Imagine Amitabh Bachchan Sir, Aamir Khan, Salmaan Khan, Sachin Tendulkar, Anil Ambani- if you went on a fast or walked to the Rashrtrapati In Delhi. If you, took this stand and made this YOUR NO 1 issue, how much change there would be?!

Why should we as women feel so unsafe in our motherland?!

Why should we as women be terrified and on guard all the time.

Why was this man out on bail after committed two rapes already ?

Make an Example Of Him.

Any man who even touches a woman should be imprisoned for life.

Be strict, make examples of these men, scare those who dare to touch us.

SCARE THEM BY MAKING AN EXAMPLE OUT OF THEM.

SAVE US, Save your mother, daughter, sister please!

This is NOT OUR SHAME.

THIS IS YOURS.

SHAME ON YOU.

Don’t sleep till you – SAVE YOUR WOMEN!

With all respect,

Shenaz Treasurywala

  • Sorry to say, but this efforts of urs will be in vain too…..it will only be liked by many and nt entertained bye any1 of the names mentioned.

  • dear everybody,
i went through shenazz letter and coments posted by my friends . what i think is as is the society is the outcome we are getting . until we means every single person in this country doesn’t protest on the spot where ever a crime against women occurs things are not going to change only by amending laws or appealing to any influential persons to do so ,problem is with us we have to change . the change hast to occur from within outside , lets start with educating our male children and making them brave enough to stand against any crime against women for this our education should include some moral values and a kind of conversation between their teachers ,next we have to take security steps like putting up cameras at all public places ,make compulsory gps system to every mode of transport. it is more important to take steps to prevent these things to happen ,i myself have two angels at my home and am very worried about my daughters and their security. if such things continue to happen i doubt how people like me who do not care whether a daughter or a son takes birth at their home start testing about it.
its time to change our attitude towards such incidents ,lets not take our eyes away , lets face the rowdys , lets provide security to every women around us irrespective of any caste differences ,lets teach our children to respect every women. lets show some guts as our youth showed after the case of nirbhaya. lets save our women and help grow our daughters in a safe secure and a healthy environment.
    so please changeeeeeeeeeeeee

  • This is a great thought that we all never expected. All the culture less people who gave importance for the scenes in movies never worried for our neighbourhood sisters who got irritated @ a lot of occasions. A lot of bus conductors never mind it. Nobody hears the cry of ordinary people. So at least now you celebrities please fight for us before acting in useless advertisements.

  • hats off lady… wen u can bring up new laws for ur sake ( politicians, busniessmans nd superstars ) why can’t a women have a new law for protection…we r advancing so much nd still follow age old laws made in 1950s.. bringing new laws for new generation….that’s would make new India…nd safer place for women..

  • OMG! I m shocked to hear that such disturbing experiences are so common and inevitable for most of the women!! Really puts ANY man to utter shame just for being a man!!!

My deepest apologies to the entire female fraternity of india for all the trauma some of our male BRUTES WITH ITCHY @@@ are causing to you!!! They should be castrated or caused double triple the pain they caused to the female just for his itching pleasure!!

  • Well, I hope this changes something! I hope Ms. Shenaz’s sharing her experience with all of us doesn’t go in vain! That is one of the reasons women do not speak, cos there’s no one who is interested in hearing ! They want to know whats wrong, but they don’t want to make it RIGHT! Even if a girl is walking naked on the streets, NOONE has the right to touch her! Thought of raping someone is not humane! I hope people with power and money as mentioned above, who claim they are changing the world, signing pacts to improve the country, take a look on the darker side and see what they are missing! Good luck and thank you Shenaz if you are reading this! :)

  • @Mortdecai & @Mohd Vajir .. I really hope and pray to God that soeday someone finds you guys dressed offensively and screw your asses because YOU invited them by your dressing sense. AMEN

  • Even I hv gne thru same experience whole my life and that too in d holy city “varanasi ” whr u can’t walk a street where u r nt groped or being passed with lewd comments. And yes even if one is wearinf a sari or salwar suit. So all those who say the short dress invites such reaction experience this urself and u wil get to knw whts d truth. Thr is no plc safe in d wrld fr women

  • culprits are not strong, we the people who don’t take the step against them they are equally responsible for that; gave punishment same as they have committed.( Eye for an eye would make world blind BUT BAD EYE FOR A BAD EYE MAKE WORLD CLEAN)

  • This is over exaggerated.
People in India respect women and bad name is earned om the basis of few people who are not good and incidents of rape etc.

May be one of 10000 men may be of cheap thinking.

This article is definitely uninvited and should not be given hype.

It will definitely prove good for indicine and Shehnaaz to bring them the lime light, which they have been craving for.

  • Its an eye opening letter for everyone. At least now, the rules should be more strict. Its like till when we women have to wait for the day when we can freely and independently step out of our houses. I wonder that day will come or we have to sit just waiting. Infact when we women are also a part of an independent nation then why only we are restricted for our lives. Not every men is dirty minded but the ones who are, at least punish them so that tomorrow not a new groper comes up. Its really a high time now.

  • First of all…I have sympathy towards Shenaz as a middle class girl and not the one is showing her body. All say India is very rich in culture and our film industries are sabotaging our culture.Tell me one person who don’t get sexual feelings by watching JISM ,JULIE.Yes those girls are exposing their bodies and middle class girls are suffering from being groped.I’m not telling industry should stop making movies but censor board should not get corrupted.

  • You can wish all you want, but unlike the middle east which is governed by Sharia laws, India is a democratic nation and such inhuman methods like castration and public killing will never happen. That being said, the rape and molestation is a huge problem.

My take on a long term fix is through education.

    1. Be open with your kids about sex if they want to discuss it at the appropriate age.
    2. Sex education should be a mandatory subject in schools.
    3. Make all schools co-educational / consider sending your kids to co-educational schools.
    4. Like other developed nations, eliminate separate seating for women in public transport, and instead have plain clothes policemen on buses and trains who will take abusers to task if any such event occurs.

  • I am ready to go on an fast with many of my office team members joining in – Cmmon India – Lets choose a day to meet at India gate and sit whole day not eating anyday but only by silently putting our heads down in shame !!

  • Yes. I agree with Sehnaz to have a Death Penalty or even severe punishment for these pshyco guys.

But like most of you mentioned there pshyco females who would take revenge of guys using these kind of law and our society is full of pathetic people who will always see him as criminal even if he is acquitted of same. We should also urge government to amend law that false complaint should be dealt with highest severity.

I really don’t know where our country is heading to.. With lot of loop hole in every law we have.

I hope one day I will be proud of our judiciary system as well.

  • The property rates should go down to 1 rupee per sqft. Who would want their daughters, wives or mothers or even grandmothers( especially for Delhi ) to get raped ??? Declare it as the state of rapists. Now the political parties who r conjoined with the real estate lobies would start asking their own news channels to show that Mumbai is also a rape affected area. But please… Mumbai is the safest place anyone can be. Change your attitude, is there something wrong with their education or what? We as citizens of Mumbai, students of Maharashtra board of education, didn’t even think about arguing to women.
Implement one language, one rule, one mentality throughout India. I won’t want my daughter to be raped. Why should you disagree if someone says I want a boy child? When my girl child would die or get raped or be a topic of abuse in this society?

I am the government. I will decide. And I decide that no one would get raped. Bring in the technologies. M not the one who just points out the problems and don’t show you the solutions.

PS: please don’t do Jhol in the CCTV implementation throughout India
The way this site very site did. I know this is all for publicity. How bout letting people share the feelings on any website? U want your 5 seconds of fame I know but its something really important.

  • Good presentation.

For the ones… who negatively commented the authour… pls remember she is representing .. YOUR mother… sister… daughter and wife too.

  • Great lady! Where are going…is it called the freedom. The real Man will never rape…man is to protect thecwomeb and family….god bless this country…!

  • Hi Shehnaz,

When I started reading the article I thought, yet another publicity gimmick, yet again someone trying to get noticed aiming one of current issues..However, as I read along this turned out to be a bitter story of every single women( Id rather not say India since its true for a lot of other parts of the world). What lacks in our country is compassion, love and respect for one another. We love our families and would go to any extent to save and protect our dear ones and the moment we step out of our houses we become iron hard. Probably because of all the deceit that one faces day by day. At a traffic signal a beggar begging, crying, sometimes howling of child birth pains.. its all bogus and yes we know it. We are now conditioned to protect our selves mentally, physically, financially, emotionally, and we all know the best defence is offence. since people have started doubting everyone( the same mistrust with which I earlier started reading your post), we have no love no compassion and no respect for one another. We treat people around us as aliens. We know they exist but we dont care enough..if we see some thing wrong happening, we dont want to get into someone elses battle simply cos it might hurt us too..
The only two things that can be a solution for all our problems.. LAW and ORDER.. if there are stricter laws and an even stricter order to maintain the laws every thing will get as it is supposed to be.. Women in this country are almost half the population( agreed not half.. I know about the female foeticide, and that’s a diff topic all together).. at some point we half the population of the country should have to come together.. some of us will have to stand for each other.. I suppose expecting a man to do the same would be a useless call.. Salute to women like Aarti and Pooja who stood up and refused to be dominated and a huge applause to you for bringing out this topic at what ever level you could.
I hope you do get a response from atleast half the men you mentioned here…much love and peace.

  • Hi Shenaz,

Thank you and God Bless you for being bold and reaching out to the people in India who can bring the change to India.

Death sentence is quick relief for the Rapist, It should be Life Imprisonment granted from a Fast track Court.

I wish to echo with you “Shame on you PM MODI and the so called Celebrities of India”.

  • I don’t have a problem with any law protecting women from rape and even a death penalty to the offenders is debatable because they are a lot of false cases and it is not always easy to correctly prove a rape case… n emotions run high on this topic bt we have to be objective… abt this because we have can’t have a descision based on emotions on this….
We need gender neutral laws…. there needs to be a balance…
Their are a lot of false rape cases in our society bt they are not talked abt…… so i urge u think long and hard and come to a reasonable conclusion…
The court has to decide whether he is guilty or nt…. nt the media nor the mob…

  • Absoulte Hatzz offffffff to you Shenaz!!!!!!!

All the people who are being addressed, really please do something about this issue

  • I’m with you shenaz.and admire your courage.u deserve a big applause for putting this issue in such a bold way.as there’s no other way to get attention. Hope implementation of stricter laws and change in peoples attitude will take place.

  • why we all keep our money and valuable things under lock & keys ? there is law against theft and police to protect, still we know our responsibility. bad people are there from start of universe and will be there till end so we need to be more careful .

  • Dont know why Indians gets sentimental at everything. Since 1 year , there has been trend of emotional advertisement ( airtel , Kinley shit) , Short films and blogs to touch Indian hearts and gain popularity. And their target is mostly urban I.T. professional who just sit in office , open Facebook and believe what they see. I am not questioning the authenticity of letter , everything is correct and strong and the celebrity part is also well -projected.
But the part which concerns me is the motive and timing of the letter , JUST BEFORE THE RELEASE OF HER MOVIE ( i dont remember the name ). I think Delhi Nirbhaya incident was most outrageous and shenaz’s outburst should have come on it naturally ( since most of the incidents mentioned in letter were well before Delhi incident except UBER cab one)…
And FYI … no celebrity can change anything …free and compulsory education to all is the only way!!
