RAEES vs SULTAN: The Mother of all box office clashes!

By Archit Mishra (Tweets @architmishra_06)

Come Eid-2016 and the mightiest superstars of Bollywood might lock horns with each other at the ticket window. No points for guessing, we’re talking about Shah Rukh Khan’s Raees taking on Salman Khan’s Sultan. Though, I’m still skeptical about this clash because, keep aside Salman, I really can’t imagine Yash Raj Films fighting it out against their all-time favourite star Shahrukh. But both the stars coming out in media and putting their claim at Eid-2016 couple of times, something that was evident during JTHJ-SOS clash, has only weakened my thought. Well, as of now we don’t know whether this clash will take place or not, but in this write up, we will attempt to foresee different aspects of this clash, if it happens.

Prospects of SULTAN

1. It’s known to all that the biggest advantage for Sultan is the man himself, Salman Khan. The present box office feat that Salman enjoys is just unparalleled.

With Chennai Express (2013), Shahrukh had managed to maintain a lead over Salman in Mumbai, Andhra/Nizam, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Mysore circuits even after the release of Kick (2014). But, Bajrangi Bhaijaan has just altered the rules. From North to South, East to West, today Salman has an edge over Shahrukh in all the circuits except Tamil Nadu/ Kerala.

All India Circuit-Wise Comparison of Highest Grossers
Salman Khan v/s Shahrukh Khan

Territory Salman Khan Shahrukh Khan
Mumbai 90.7 (Bajrangi Bhaijaan) 68.5 (Chennai Express)
Delhi/ UP 70.5 (Bajrangi Bhaijaan) 38.8 (Chennai Express)
East Punjab 32.9 (Bajrangi Bhaijaan) 15.2 (Happy New Year)
Rajasthan 18.4 (Bajrangi Bhaijaan) 11.5 (Chennai Express)
CP Berar 19.0 (Bajrangi Bhaijaan) 10.0 (Chennai Express)
CI 12.5 (Bajrangi Bhaijaan)    7.5 (Chennai Express)
Nizam/ Andhra 16.2 (Bajrangi Bhaijaan) 15.2 (Chennai Express)
Mysore 17.3 (Bajrangi Bhaijaan) 15.1 (Chennai Express)
Tamil Nadu/ Kerala 4.4  (Bajrangi Bhaijaan) 6.9 (Chennai Express)
West Bengal 17.1 (Bajrangi Bhaijaan) 11.0 (Chennai Express)
Bihar 8.5   (Bajrangi Bhaijaan) 4.8   (Chennai Express)
Assam 3.3   (Bajrangi Bhaijaan) 1.8   (Chennai Express)
Odisha 3.8   (Bajrangi Bhaijaan) 2.2   (Chennai Express)

Note: All the collections are in CRORES.

2. Another big benefit for Sultan is that it is backed by the country’s best production house, Yash Raj Film (YRF). Thus, one can expect the budgeting, marketing and distribution to be top notch. Prior to Sultan, Salman and YRF have collaborated for Ek Tha Tiger which was super successful. Moreover, YRF are extremely smart in handling distribution, especially during a clash (everybody’s aware of their tactics during JTHJ vs SOS clash). The question is will they fight that hard against someone as influential as SRK?

3. Though, not much is revealed about the film so far, frankly speaking it’s too difficult to figure out any disadvantage for Sultan. Still, if one has to point a thing, I would like to know more about its genre – Action, Romance, Biography, Family or Sports, what exactly is Sultan all about because that might decide how big a winner it has the potential to turn out eventually.

Prospects of RAEES

1. Just like Sultan, the biggest plus for RAEES is its lead actor, Shah Rukh Khan. Moreover, Shahrukh’s impeccable record on clashes makes him invincible at the box-office. Just a look at the below data and you would know that Shahrukh’s best has come when someone has challenged him. In fact, except Aamir Khan, there’s practically no A-List actor from the present lot that hasn’t tasted defeat in the hands of SRK. Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar, Hrithik Roshan, Ajay Devgn, Govinda and Ranbir Kapoor, all have finished second to SRK in a clash.

The Clash Record
Shah Rukh Khan vs others

Year Shahrukh Khan Opposition
1998 KKHH[46.9 cr – ALL TIME BLOCKBUSTER] Bade Miya Chhote Miya[19.2 cr – HIT]
2000 Mohabbatein[42 cr – BLOCKBUSTER] Mission Kashmir[23 cr – AVERAGE]
2004 Veer Zara[41.9 cr – SUPER HIT] Aitraaz[15.6 cr – AVERAGE]
2006 Don[50.3 cr – HIT] Jaan-E-Mann[25.1 cr – FLOP]
2007 Om Shanti Om[78.2 cr – BLOCKBUSTER] Saawariya[21 cr – DISASTER]
2012 JTHJ[120 cr – SUPER HIT] SOS[101 cr – HIT]

2. Secondly, the genre and the subject of Raees goes very well with the festivities of Eid. The intention of the makers to cash in on this advantage is pretty much visible in their tag line “Baniye ka dimaag… Miya bhai ki daring…” SRK’s menacing, yet intelligent avatar, was liked by one and all. The fact that Raees also has Nawazuddin Siddiqui only adds brownie points in its favour.

3. It’s quite an irony that when the last time Shahrukh (Don) and Salman (Jaan-E-Mann) indulged in a face off, Shahrukh’s film was backed by the same banner, Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani’s Excel Entertainment. But, in reality, this only can be counted as a minus for Raees when compared with the veteran YRF.

An Insight of this Clash: Positive and Negative Aspects

1. Number of Screens – The Toughest Test: The biggest challenge for the producers / distributors will be to maximize the screen size of the country to a number that can house the enormous audience. Below is the depiction of Screen Count Distribution and Footfalls (Number of tickets sold) during Eid since last five years.

Year Movie Screen Count Footfalls(in crores)
2015 Bajrangi Bhaijaan 4100 (+8%) 3.55 (+47%)
2014 Kick 3800 (+ 5%) 2.42 (-3%)
2013 Chennai Express 3600 (+13%) 2.52 (+2%)
2012 Ek Tha Tiger 3200 (+16%) 2.47 (+11%)
2011 Bodyguard 2750 2.22

Today, a Khan film to be declared a Blockbuster must have at least 2 crore footfalls. Here an interesting point is that footfalls have remained more or less same between 2012 and 2014 before Bajrangi Bhaijaan grew magnanimously (+47%) and a similar growth in 2016 shall not be a cake walk. Still, considering the grandeur of this clash, if we consider the maximum growths in footfall and screen count, the picture for 2016 could something turn out like below.

Screen Count (with +16%) : 4800 (approx.)
Footfall (with +47%) : 5.2 crore

The screen size might be manageable, but footfall looks like a fantasy. This probably is the best case scenario which seems to be highly improbable. These footfalls are comparable only to that of Gadar which has the highest footfalls since last 20 years.

2. Magnitude of Success: Honestly, it is practically impossible to predict the moolah that these two films can bring in together on a festival as big as Eid. And this is also a proven fact that as far as content is accepted, two films can easily survive together, for ex. Gadar vs Lagaan or Jab Tak Hai Jaan vs Son of Sardaar. But the more relevant question is that will it be equivalent to what both these films are capable of minting as solo festival releases?

Have we ever wondered how many films does Bollywood make every year and how many of them actually succeed in keeping their distributors and producers happy? Consider 2014 as an example and the below facts can come as a shocker to many.

2014 Box Office Scenario

Total Films Released 200
Safe Ventures Films that recovered their money (includes Hit Films) 21
Clean Hits 11
Success Percentage 10%
Hit Percentage 5%

The major chunk of this 5% profit and 10% recovery come from the Khans every year. Considering the current trade system, the least cost that a Khan film would land is 120 crore. Now the question is, would YRF and EXCEL consider the clash factor and mutually agree to sell their films at lesser prices to the distributors? Well, honestly speaking, that’s very difficult.
Minimum Combined Cost = 240 crore
Minimum Net Theatrical Business for Recovery = 450 crore plus.

  • Huge Increase in Ticket Prices: It’s very much given that to accommodate the dearth of screens, producers/ distributors of both the films may release their films at all-time high rates which will eventually take a toll on the common man’s pocket.
  • Unprecedented craze: As soon as there was an announcement of this clash, everybody starting from fans, to distributors and social media started speculating. Imagine what would happen if this clash turns into reality. The curiosity shall be beyond any comparisons and the media might present this as the D-Day battle with the winner taking everything and the loser left empty hands.

If a clash takes place, which film is more likely to win?

  • SRK…Raees “baniye ka dimag miya bhai ki daring”…this daring would be bhari on “Multani Mitti”
‘Multani Mitti” is directed by talentless Ali zafar…big Zero.

waiting for clash…if SRk loose this i will never comment.

  • Except AMIR…mishraji u mean Amir is not lead actor? of akele hum akele Tum which was defeated by Ramjane.
Anyway clash won’t happened because sultan has not yet started and many people don’t know about 2006 clash when dhoom2 was supposed to clash with don but yrf has back out at right time and suddenly nadiadwala poke their nose and committed suicide. Yrf just want to hype their project.

  • @indicine….as you say you dont like fan war so as neutral cinelover one more important fact i will notify you…you forget…Salman khan last realse done massive business….but if PRDP underperform than scene will change to this clash….so last realse film also important more for sallu…same with SRK if Dilwale become massive hit than sultan no where available for clash or vice versa.

i remember ekta kapoor had said in press confrence “wo kaha or hum kaha” when question on clash with CE with OUTIMD “

  • Being srk fan..wd love raees to win. Bt we al kw that content wil win in long run.both wil open big wid around similr screen counts. Both wil have huge opening arnd similr weknd colections..then the real content game starts… Dnt kw mch abt sultan as no teaser yet. Bt raees looks promising.. Srk has nailed it just wid looks in that short teaser. Lets c wt sultan has in store.

  • Lol on sarook fan site indicine to make raees win the poll. Srks movies in the past have won clashes simply cos they were better movies or marketed better. Not due to srks stardom. Lol. Rice is not a universal film. Only Muslims will go to watch. More over prod house is 3rd class. Sarook knows that very well. He will postpone it don’t worry. All sarook fans wake up. Don’t live in the past.

In his best phase so called golden phase sarook despite working mostly with yrf and karan johar has given only 3 blockbusters in 2000-2010 decade. Lol on global king.

He must thank lord that Salman had those personal problems in that decade due to which sarook did as well as he did.

I’ll bet he will never be able to beat Salman ever in future.

  • Biggest hit box office figures have tilted the advantage in favour of Salman. However, SRK has a release later this year which could nullify this advantage if Dilwale becomes a bigger grosser than CE.

However, I dont think the clash will happen. Business and economics usually wins over egos. Maybe the two production houses/teams should get a mediator/arbitrator to amicably avoid the clash. Rider obviously is that the mediator/arbitrator has to be equally big and influential and equally pally with Excel & YRF.

Aamir Khan are u listening?!?! Would make for some great news and great publicity for two films with all three khans involved.

But on a serious note clash would not happen I feel. Probably SUltan will move ahead as it hasn’t even started shooting whereas most of Raees shoot is already complete!

  • After release of PRDP, Salman Khan has only one film SULTAN that is releasing on Eid. So the bazz of sultan will be increase massively.

And srk has two releases after Dilwale’s release in between next eid. So there is no chance for Rahees to increase film’s bazz in. Good level.

So win win situation for Sultan on next eid. Rahees has no chance to win this battle.

Salman Khan has biggest power to win ?

  • @incidine
    according to boxofficeindia.com
Aamir Khan’s “Akele Hum Akele Tum” was clashed with Shahrukh Khan’s “Ram Jaane”. where “Ram Jaane” was hit and “Akele Hum Akele Tum” was flop.

  • @indicine – plz give lifetime coll of Phantom & verdict. Since it was made on a budget of 70cr, so I think it is a FLOP

  • i think there is no comparison woth Salman in this period only his body can cover whole raees movoe wait n watch and some are saying ali abbas zafar is mediocre director then who is rahul dholakia at least gunday was hit but dholakia has never given a single hit lol.

  • With all respect to Indicine , I feel the above circuit comparison is totally unfair..You are comparing 2013 movie with 2015 movie…Also Chennai express had just 6 open days in Box office…All the initial collections depends on Screen count and Solo release…SRK still holds highest opening day and weekend record even with an average movie like HNY…So if a clash happens it will clearly affect Sultan…And for Yrf factor..Agreed they are the biggest production company in India..but tell me how many people care about production company now..Its all about the lead actor..SRK is bigger than YRF anyday..So nobody should teach him the marketing..He will do it better than anyone for sure..Everybody is praising Aamir and Salman for their recent blockbusters…But all of them are solo releases..Aamir always get benefit of Christmas release which has 3 open weeks..SRK delivered an Industry hit with just 6 open days…That too with mixed reviews for Chennai Express…So if the content is appreciated then sky is the limit…So in my opinion, if this clash happens then Sultan will clearly get affected….

  • SRK is the biggest superstar and the biggest crowed puller of the country..no one can win the clash against this mighty king.i m 100% sure that if this clash happen then raees will not just beat it will destroy the sultan very badly…

  • be it Sultan or Raees or Dangal ? not interested ( Dangal little bit not much )

MOHENJO DARO is the only film, I am too interested & waiting for it and not just me or Only Hrithikians or Nation, Entire Globe is waiting for MOHENJO DARO.

Other film that I am looking forward to is non other than “THUG” starring Hrithik Roshan possibly going to release on Xmas 2016 one of most powerful EDX (EidDipawaliXmas) holidays

This two films “MOHENJO DARO” and “THUG” are going to be Top2 Biggest Blockbuster Films Of The Year 2016 !

    List will be like

    1, MOHENJO DARO or THUG

    2, MOHENJO DARO or THUG

    3, Dangal

    4, Shivaay

    5, Sultan

    6, Raees or Fan

    7, Raees or Fan

    8, …………

    9, …………

    10, ……….

  • I can bet here Sultan will not release on EID. This is a conspiracy by YRF and SRK. Either Salman can not have a release on EID 2016 or YRF will ensure this movie will be crap which can not stand against Raees.Just to prove that Salman on his prime is nothing in front of SRK. Any other production house and I am 100% sure SRK is nothing in front of Salman.
Many might think this is a bullshit but let 2016 July come and then we can speak. I can not trust YRF and SRK will fight with each other.

  • Everything boils down to the genre of Sultan. If it is a massy film with action sequences and item songs it would have an edge over Raees(which looks more of an offbeat film) in terms of opening. We can’t deny the fact that Salman is a huge star now so some of his previous clashes with Srk is quite insignificant. But considering the fact that Raees’s first look is absolutely top notch and Srk’s menacing look is being liked unanimously by the audiences Raees looks like a clear winner and WOM is expected to be on the positive side. Also raees would have a clear edge over Sultan in overseas where Srk’s stardom is unparalleled. For many Srk fans the happiest thing would be to see the actor Srk back next year and I am hoping him to win his next filmfare award and better Dilip Saab’s record.I still believe there’s no better actor than Srk in our generation.

Comparing Srk’s highest grosser with BB doesn’t makes sense since the no. of screens in which both these movies were different and the ticket prices were lesser back in 2013.Also BB had an extremely positive WOM.It would be interesting to compare Dilwale and BB since the release gap is not more than 5 months.

Overall I don’t expect too much difference when it comes to the lifetime collections of both these movies. Some die hard fans of both these stars are expecting one film to collect 275 and the other to collect 120 which won’t be possible even in their dreams since both these stars have a huge fan base and they will ensure both these movies cross 200 crores smoothly. In my opinion the film which is more appreciated will be the winner. It shouldn’t be looked as a clash to prove the supremacy of one star over the other since there are different factors which determine the outcome of the movie.I would certainly place my bet on Raees not as an Srk fan but as a film lover.

  • The last few Archit Mishra articles have been terrific and insightful!

About the clash, may the film with better content win:)

    Just a suggestion:

You guys can also use director and screenplay writer’s track record. For example Shoojit’s writer Juhi Chaturvedi has 2 out of 3 big hits to her name. This gives us a rough idea about the content of her films.

Using this kind of analysis we can roughly predict the WOM.

I mean Bahubali’s writer who wrote Bajrangi Bhaijaan made a big difference to lifetime collections. From 240 crores to 325 crores was a huge jump for Salman. Similarly in Raees VS Sultan clash you guys can add this analysis.

This might help you get a better idea as to which film has the chances to sustain in the longer run inspite of a clash.

Thanks! And keep up with your terrific analysis!

  • My honest opinion….
Eid 2016 – only Raees will be released.
    Diwali 2016 – sultan
    Christmas 2016 – dangal
the rest doesn’t matter not a bit …!!!
but Raees in all probability will become the highest grossing movie of 2016 .
there will be no any clash !!!
this is the reality just wait a few months to hear it out !!!!
Raees will rule both by masses and classes.
no chance for sultan and dangal to become blockbuster for sure !!!
srk rocks sallu and aamir will badly shock after the super success of Raees just the way chennai express did mouh !!!!!

  • Who cares
Salman will back out as he did for hero …!
Salman Iz on cloud 9 now, Vry soon he will realise tht he iz a mediocre star .
BTW aitrazz collection ? 24crs ,not 15 crs

  • There is no comparasion between megastar Bhai movie & street dancer queen movie. Bhai is giving 300cr grosser easily but queen needs lots of manipulation+Deepika+multistarcast to surpass even 150cr mark (hny. It is a BEIZZATI for Bhai comparison him with these 2rs gatarchap actors…

  • Sultan does have a disadvantage, and that’s its director. He has directed Gunday and has assisted in movies like Marigoal, Tashan, Badmash Company etc.

I don’t know why would YRF risk him direct a big movie with Salman.

I think Sultan may win the domestic opening (day & weekend) clash by small margin, but Raees’ content will drive the movie to eventually surpass lifetime collections of Sultan, SRK will also rule overseas markets and it might not be close.

  • To all Akians !!! Go with SRK. We have to support SRK. Because salman and aamir fans are always against Akki. So we have to do the same

  • there is no sultan or fultan. We have the experience to defeat our opponant. Raees is going to biggest film in
    2016
