RAEES vs SULTAN: The Mother of all box office clashes!

By Archit Mishra (Tweets @architmishra_06)

Come Eid-2016 and the mightiest superstars of Bollywood might lock horns with each other at the ticket window. No points for guessing, we’re talking about Shah Rukh Khan’s Raees taking on Salman Khan’s Sultan. Though, I’m still skeptical about this clash because, keep aside Salman, I really can’t imagine Yash Raj Films fighting it out against their all-time favourite star Shahrukh. But both the stars coming out in media and putting their claim at Eid-2016 couple of times, something that was evident during JTHJ-SOS clash, has only weakened my thought. Well, as of now we don’t know whether this clash will take place or not, but in this write up, we will attempt to foresee different aspects of this clash, if it happens.

Prospects of SULTAN

1. It’s known to all that the biggest advantage for Sultan is the man himself, Salman Khan. The present box office feat that Salman enjoys is just unparalleled.

With Chennai Express (2013), Shahrukh had managed to maintain a lead over Salman in Mumbai, Andhra/Nizam, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Mysore circuits even after the release of Kick (2014). But, Bajrangi Bhaijaan has just altered the rules. From North to South, East to West, today Salman has an edge over Shahrukh in all the circuits except Tamil Nadu/ Kerala.

All India Circuit-Wise Comparison of Highest Grossers
Salman Khan v/s Shahrukh Khan

Territory Salman Khan Shahrukh Khan
Mumbai 90.7 (Bajrangi Bhaijaan) 68.5 (Chennai Express)
Delhi/ UP 70.5 (Bajrangi Bhaijaan) 38.8 (Chennai Express)
East Punjab 32.9 (Bajrangi Bhaijaan) 15.2 (Happy New Year)
Rajasthan 18.4 (Bajrangi Bhaijaan) 11.5 (Chennai Express)
CP Berar 19.0 (Bajrangi Bhaijaan) 10.0 (Chennai Express)
CI 12.5 (Bajrangi Bhaijaan)    7.5 (Chennai Express)
Nizam/ Andhra 16.2 (Bajrangi Bhaijaan) 15.2 (Chennai Express)
Mysore 17.3 (Bajrangi Bhaijaan) 15.1 (Chennai Express)
Tamil Nadu/ Kerala 4.4  (Bajrangi Bhaijaan) 6.9 (Chennai Express)
West Bengal 17.1 (Bajrangi Bhaijaan) 11.0 (Chennai Express)
Bihar 8.5   (Bajrangi Bhaijaan) 4.8   (Chennai Express)
Assam 3.3   (Bajrangi Bhaijaan) 1.8   (Chennai Express)
Odisha 3.8   (Bajrangi Bhaijaan) 2.2   (Chennai Express)

Note: All the collections are in CRORES.

2. Another big benefit for Sultan is that it is backed by the country’s best production house, Yash Raj Film (YRF). Thus, one can expect the budgeting, marketing and distribution to be top notch. Prior to Sultan, Salman and YRF have collaborated for Ek Tha Tiger which was super successful. Moreover, YRF are extremely smart in handling distribution, especially during a clash (everybody’s aware of their tactics during JTHJ vs SOS clash). The question is will they fight that hard against someone as influential as SRK?

3. Though, not much is revealed about the film so far, frankly speaking it’s too difficult to figure out any disadvantage for Sultan. Still, if one has to point a thing, I would like to know more about its genre – Action, Romance, Biography, Family or Sports, what exactly is Sultan all about because that might decide how big a winner it has the potential to turn out eventually.

Prospects of RAEES

1. Just like Sultan, the biggest plus for RAEES is its lead actor, Shah Rukh Khan. Moreover, Shahrukh’s impeccable record on clashes makes him invincible at the box-office. Just a look at the below data and you would know that Shahrukh’s best has come when someone has challenged him. In fact, except Aamir Khan, there’s practically no A-List actor from the present lot that hasn’t tasted defeat in the hands of SRK. Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar, Hrithik Roshan, Ajay Devgn, Govinda and Ranbir Kapoor, all have finished second to SRK in a clash.

The Clash Record
Shah Rukh Khan vs others

Year Shahrukh Khan Opposition
1998 KKHH[46.9 cr – ALL TIME BLOCKBUSTER] Bade Miya Chhote Miya[19.2 cr – HIT]
2000 Mohabbatein[42 cr – BLOCKBUSTER] Mission Kashmir[23 cr – AVERAGE]
2004 Veer Zara[41.9 cr – SUPER HIT] Aitraaz[15.6 cr – AVERAGE]
2006 Don[50.3 cr – HIT] Jaan-E-Mann[25.1 cr – FLOP]
2007 Om Shanti Om[78.2 cr – BLOCKBUSTER] Saawariya[21 cr – DISASTER]
2012 JTHJ[120 cr – SUPER HIT] SOS[101 cr – HIT]

2. Secondly, the genre and the subject of Raees goes very well with the festivities of Eid. The intention of the makers to cash in on this advantage is pretty much visible in their tag line “Baniye ka dimaag… Miya bhai ki daring…” SRK’s menacing, yet intelligent avatar, was liked by one and all. The fact that Raees also has Nawazuddin Siddiqui only adds brownie points in its favour.

3. It’s quite an irony that when the last time Shahrukh (Don) and Salman (Jaan-E-Mann) indulged in a face off, Shahrukh’s film was backed by the same banner, Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani’s Excel Entertainment. But, in reality, this only can be counted as a minus for Raees when compared with the veteran YRF.

An Insight of this Clash: Positive and Negative Aspects

1. Number of Screens – The Toughest Test: The biggest challenge for the producers / distributors will be to maximize the screen size of the country to a number that can house the enormous audience. Below is the depiction of Screen Count Distribution and Footfalls (Number of tickets sold) during Eid since last five years.

Year Movie Screen Count Footfalls(in crores)
2015 Bajrangi Bhaijaan 4100 (+8%) 3.55 (+47%)
2014 Kick 3800 (+ 5%) 2.42 (-3%)
2013 Chennai Express 3600 (+13%) 2.52 (+2%)
2012 Ek Tha Tiger 3200 (+16%) 2.47 (+11%)
2011 Bodyguard 2750 2.22

Today, a Khan film to be declared a Blockbuster must have at least 2 crore footfalls. Here an interesting point is that footfalls have remained more or less same between 2012 and 2014 before Bajrangi Bhaijaan grew magnanimously (+47%) and a similar growth in 2016 shall not be a cake walk. Still, considering the grandeur of this clash, if we consider the maximum growths in footfall and screen count, the picture for 2016 could something turn out like below.

Screen Count (with +16%) : 4800 (approx.)
Footfall (with +47%) : 5.2 crore

The screen size might be manageable, but footfall looks like a fantasy. This probably is the best case scenario which seems to be highly improbable. These footfalls are comparable only to that of Gadar which has the highest footfalls since last 20 years.

2. Magnitude of Success: Honestly, it is practically impossible to predict the moolah that these two films can bring in together on a festival as big as Eid. And this is also a proven fact that as far as content is accepted, two films can easily survive together, for ex. Gadar vs Lagaan or Jab Tak Hai Jaan vs Son of Sardaar. But the more relevant question is that will it be equivalent to what both these films are capable of minting as solo festival releases?

Have we ever wondered how many films does Bollywood make every year and how many of them actually succeed in keeping their distributors and producers happy? Consider 2014 as an example and the below facts can come as a shocker to many.

2014 Box Office Scenario

Total Films Released 200
Safe Ventures Films that recovered their money (includes Hit Films) 21
Clean Hits 11
Success Percentage 10%
Hit Percentage 5%

The major chunk of this 5% profit and 10% recovery come from the Khans every year. Considering the current trade system, the least cost that a Khan film would land is 120 crore. Now the question is, would YRF and EXCEL consider the clash factor and mutually agree to sell their films at lesser prices to the distributors? Well, honestly speaking, that’s very difficult.
Minimum Combined Cost = 240 crore
Minimum Net Theatrical Business for Recovery = 450 crore plus.

  • Huge Increase in Ticket Prices: It’s very much given that to accommodate the dearth of screens, producers/ distributors of both the films may release their films at all-time high rates which will eventually take a toll on the common man’s pocket.
  • Unprecedented craze: As soon as there was an announcement of this clash, everybody starting from fans, to distributors and social media started speculating. Imagine what would happen if this clash turns into reality. The curiosity shall be beyond any comparisons and the media might present this as the D-Day battle with the winner taking everything and the loser left empty hands.

If a clash takes place, which film is more likely to win?

  • Srk highest grosser 207 crore
    SALMAN highest grosser 325 crore

Difference of more than 100 crore. Srk has a long way to go before he can compete with Sultan SALMAN.
    Sultan will thrash Raees.

  • Waiting eagerly only for Sultan. Salman will be the winner this time.
@srkians dont live in 2006 era. come back to present reality. Today shahrukh is nothing compared to Salman.

  • Shahrukh is no competition for Salman. In 2012 even Ajay Devgn defeated Shahrukh in clash.
SOS had less screens than JTHJ, got poor reviews but still turned to be more successful than JTHJ.

  • First of all, this clash itself won’t take place. Sallu’s Multan will be shifted to a later date. Considering the fate of other movies (which clashed with king khan’ movie in past ), I don’t think a sensible guy like Aditya chopra would like to take this risk.
Coming to the next part of the article, @Archit, its not fair to compare a mixed wom movie of 2013, with an excellent wom movie of 2015. Also, you should have put into consideration that Bajrangi bhaijan was released on more number of screens and it doesn’t have any competition at least for two weeks. Whereas , CE only got 6 days of open run with less number of screens. So I don’t think this comparison was fair.

  • When two big superstars clash – content becomes crucial coz both can bring audiences on their shoulder within first weekend..
So content along with genre will be a key..
Though bajrangi got more footfall than PK – hny still holds biggest opening day nd opening weekend record.. both are winner for me.. I m not typical fantard.. I love both and watch their films in theater.. just diff is SRK is my all time fav..

  • Mother of all clashes, but result will be same as always…
    History will be repeated….
Once again it will be proved why one of them known as King and others not…..
    Waiting for it…..

  • Also, you will have to Think that if Bajrangi bhaijan has an edge over CE (keeping the release year of these two movies apart) , it happened when these two movies released separately. Will the situation be same when they will release together? In that case, don’t you think distributors from SRK’s strong bases I.e. West Bengal, Mysore, Nijam etc will prefer Raees over Multan?

  • @Indicine/Archit : following your words :

This article is not to create fan wars !!

I have kept my above comments very balanced, but any non-sensical comment from sallu fans wotbe replied in an appropriate way and then you should not be having any problem.
    Thanks.

  • It is indeed the mother of all clashes..since wanted,Salman Khan on Eid has always bettered himself in terms of lifetime business and on the other hand Shahrukh Khan gave his highest grosser and also broke 3 idiot’s 4 year old lifetime record to become the highest grossing film of all time..Hence,its a very tough call to select a particular winner.Salman Khan is on the crest of the wave at the moment and its not a wise decision to clash with him at this very moment and that too on Eid but one cannot undermine the pull that Shahrukh Khan has..his pathetic films in recent past have been record breaking and huge openers..this itself shows he is still a juggernaut at the box office on the initial front

  • I’m from west Bengal as far as popularity is concerned SALMAN IS WAY AHEAD OF srk
In popularity if i compare tollywood’s 3 biggest stars with 3 khans that would be—
    SULTAN SALMAN– DEV
    AAMIR KHAN — PRASENJIT CHATTARJEE
    srk– jeet

Now back to the clash in eid 2016
    It’s SULTAN ALL OVER.
HE HAS BEEN RULING BOLLYWOOD SINCE 1989 AND WILL EMERGE VICTORIOUS IN NEXT EID TOO
    ALL HAIL KING SALMAN

  • Salman has slightly more chance.
All the things changed with Bajrangi Bhaijaan.
Before Bajrangi Bhaijaan it was 50-50.
If Dilwale will do more than 250 crores with clash, then it would be interesting.
As far as movies are concerned,
Sultan is looking a little more commercial than Raees.
But Raees will be a great film to watch.
    So finally I would say,
Sultan has 65% chance to beat Raees.
But if Raees content would be liked more, then anything can happen.

  • All lead actors already clashed with him and SRK is clearly winner even Abithab Bachchan too, so Criminal is nothing infront of him get lost from EID only EID Saved him looser .

  • @Indicine. . .Amir is also defeated by Srk in clash , .

    Here’s the list of all-

    1. 1992- Bazigar (7.75 cr hit) vs Bedardi (Ajay Devgan 1.1 cr flop)

    2. 1995- Ddlj (61 cr All time blockbuster) vs yaarana (rishi kapoor raj babbar 4 cr flop)

    3. Ram jaane (9.5 cr Hit) vs Akele hum akele tum (amir khan 8.5 cr avarage)

    4. 1998- Kuch kuch hota hai (45.25 cr All time blockbuster) vs bade miya chote miya (Amitabh govinda 16 cr semi hit)

    5. 2000- Mohabbtein (33.25 cr super hit) vs Mission kashmir (hritthik 22 cr semi hit)

    6. 2004- Veer zaara (40cr super hit) vs Aitraaz (Akshay 24 cr avarage)

    7. 2006- Don (51 cr hit) vs jaaneman (Salman Akshay 25 cr flop)

    8. 2007- Chak de India (68 cr blockbuster) vs Marigold (salman 0.25 cr disaster)

    9. 2007- Om shanti om (79.5 cr blockbuster) vs Sawariya (Ranbir 23.5 cr flop)

    10. 2012- Jab tak hai jaan (121 cr hit) vs Son of saradar (ajay 100 cr hit)

King 23 year pehle jo tha ab v wohi hai. . .

Srk beat Ajay, rishi kapoor, raj babbar, govinda, Amitabh, Amir, salman, akshay, ranbir, hritthik all of them in clash.

  • Forget about 2006 clash. It’s gone case now. Now today no one can challenge the baap of Bollywood and biggest megastar Salman khan. Srk looks old and ugly and he no more possesses any stardom. Sultan will completely crush raees badly. It would be better that tiny actor srk postpones raees otherwise it will be disaster in front of sultan storm. And @Archit mishra dont say 2 mightiest superstars but put 1 of the 2 mighiest superstars along with aamir khan will clash with overrated once upon a time has been star srk.

  • Nice article… Its Better for the indystry if they avoid the clash…being a salman fan, I will definitely watch sultan..I never miss the srk film as well including happy new year..but in case clash happens, then I may or may not watch raees….this situation will be created for most of the people.. So it’s better they avoid the clash..

  • With clash shahenshah Salman will beat srk easily…..
    Sultan will definitely beat raees….
    Sultan – 225 cr
    Raees – 110 cr
    No one can beat Salman…..

  • @ archit mishra :
You have written some excellent articles before , but this one is not at all impressive !

    1. First of all, if you like to know the influence of a star on a particular territory , you have to state percentage collections — NOT total collections .
For ex: BB collected 16 crores (out of 320 crores) from Nizam/Andhra , i.e, 5% of its collections . At the same time, CE collected 15 crores (out of 227 crores) from Nizam/Andhra , i.e, 6.7% of its collections . So — SRK is more popular in Nizam/Andhra circuit .
Similarly, BB made 28% of its collections from Mumbai circuit — while CE made 30% of its collections from Mumbai circuit . So, SRK leads here also !

    2. Moreover, in terms of information this article is not adequate . Aamir Khan also lost a clash against SRK in 1995 , when SRK’s Ram Jaane (10 crores) defeated Aamir’s Akele Hum Akele Tum (5 crores) . So basically, EVERYONE — from Amitabh to Salman , Ajay to Aamir — everyone has been defeated by Shahrukh Khan !

Overall the article is fine .

  • SALMAN VS RANBIR :: WINNER-RANBIR
SRK VS RANBIR :: WINNER SRK

    SALMAN VS AKKI :: WINNER-AKKI
    SRK VS AKKI :: WINNER-SRK

SALMAN VS AJAY (MAMK VS ATB) :: WINNER AJAY
SRK VS AJAY :: WINNER SRK

SRK VS SALMAN :: WINNER SRK

SRK VS AAMIR (RAMJAANE VS AHAT) :: WINNER SRK

SRK HAS DEFEATED SALMAN, AAMIR, AKKI, AJAY, HRITHIK, RANBIR, AMIT JI ETC. AT THE BOX OFFICE

ALSO YASH JI WITH SRK BLOCKBUSTERS (DTPG,VZ)
YASH JI WITH AAMIR DISASTER (PARAMPARA )

    NIHIL ADWANI WITH SRK- KHNH
NIKHIL ADWANI WITH SALMAN- SALAAME ISHQ

SOO YOU KNOW BETTER WHAT’S GONNA HAPPEN ON EID 2016 :D
