Nikhil Advani Career Analysis: Films and Box Office

By Archit Mishra (Tweets @architmishra_06)

This September, Nikhil Advani will have 2 successive releases just within the span of a week, competing with each other in the form of ‘Hero’ and ‘Katti Batti’. We thought it’s a good time to have a look into Advani’s past work/ accomplishments and analyze the prospects of his upcoming ventures.

Nikhil started his career as an Assistant Director to elite directors such as Sudhir Mishra (Is Raat Ki Subah Nahin), Karan Johar (Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham) and Aditya Chopra (Mohabattein). His debut film as Director, Kal Ho Na Ho, was produced by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions. The film did well at the box office, but all releases that followed have failed to make impact.

Strengths

  1. Emotional Connect: Nikhil has ample abilities in handling emotional side of human nature. It was quite evident with the maturity he handled dramatic scenes in Kal Ho Naa Ho and Patiala House.
  2. An Ear For Music: Irrespective of the box office fate, most of his films left a mark with good music. All of his directorial ventures so far had music by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and Katti Batti will follow the suit. Quite surprisingly, Hero will be his first movie not associated with the Music director trio.
  3. Critical Acclaim: He was also fortunate enough to be in the good books of the critics. Of his directorial endeavors, Kal Ho Na Ho and D-Day won the best acclaim. Both the films earned ‘winner/ nomination’ titles in multiple categories at reputed Award ceremonies.
  4. Foreign Appeal: Another skill Nikhil possesses is catering to the taste of NRI audience. Whether it was Kal Ho Na Ho, Patiala House or even Salaam-E-Ishq, he ably shot scenes in exotic foreign locations and portrayed some stories of Indians living abroad.

Weakness

His biggest weakness is one of the most crucial aspects of film making, the almighty Box Office. After making a Hit directorial debut with Kal Ho Naa Ho, Nikhil has had a string of Disasters and Flops behind him. Interestingly, though he has worked with 3 superstars of Bollywood (Shahrukh Khan, Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar), success has come only with Shahrukh.

Production Plans

Advani commands a decent experience in Production as well since he has co-produced Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai and D-Day. Currently he owns a production house with the name, Emmay Entertainment Private Limited. The company was behind D-Day and is now co-producing Katti-Batti, Hero and Airlift in partnership with reputed production houses like UTV, Salman Khan Films and T-Series respectively.

Hero vs Katti Batti

Hero and Katti Batti Posters

Hero and Katti Batti Posters

  • Banner: If Katti Batti (releasing on 18th Sep 2015) has a big banner like UTV associated with it, Hero (releasing on 11th Sep 2015) too has Eros International (Distribution) on its side. Not to mention, Salman Khan’s backing.
  • Advantages: The biggest USP of Katti Batti is that it’s the first major release of Kangana Ranaut after the blockbuster triumph of Tanu Weds Manu Returns (Here, we take your permission to assume that I Love New Year was just a nightmare and not reality). Kangana is at an all-time career high with the success of Queen and TWMR behind her. On the other hand, though Hero shall be the launch pad of two star kids, Sooraj Pancholi and Athiya Shetty, it is none other than Salman Khan himself who has got eye balls rolling in favour of Hero, as he is involved in multiple departments of this film, be it production, creativity or music. Moreover, Hero is a remake of the 1983 classic with the same name, which was directed by Subhash Ghai and Jackie Shroff and Meenakshi Sheshadri achieved stardom with that film.
  • Music flavour: Both the films have good light hearted music which majorly aims at the youth. Hero has couple of potential chartbusters in the form of ‘Main Hoon Hero Tera’, ‘Dance Ke Legend’ and ‘Yadaan Teriyaan’. Similarly, ‘Sarfira’ and ‘Lip-To-Lip’ lead from Katti Batti’s album.
  • Multiplex vs Single Screen Appeal: By the looks, Katti Batti seems to be the quintessential Rom-Com that can score on the strength of multiplexes. Contrary, Hero will have an edge at Single Screens as it has got action as its back drop in the romantic tale.

Final Word

In a career spanning over a decade, Nikhil Advani has juggled it up with diverse genres – Romance, Comedy, Drama, Animation and Thriller. In the process, he has earned good commendation for himself but the ticket window hasn’t been as merciful. He is one of the most capable directors in the industry who still needs to prove his mettle at the box-office and there can’t be a better time for that. After a long gap, he is returning to his forte, Romance, with these two upcoming films. They say that life doesn’t give a second chance. Well, this September has in its store, not one, but two opulent opportunities for the director. The big question is – Will Nikhil be able to break his Box Office jinx? We wish him the best!

  • @Phenomenal idiot : If you dont like BB then there is something wrong with humanity within yourself !!!!!!!!!!!!

Maratha warrior vs Maratha Mandir (Dildo-wale) this Christmas.
Be Afraid, be very very afraid !!!!!!!!!!! :-p

  • @Hrithik LOL if DCH is better than don, don2 and SWADES then MELA IS MUCH BETTER THAN BUDDHA’S BHOJPURI BHAIJAAN. Accept it or die!! HUHU……..

  • @Hrithik Humanity??? Yes of course! We saw criminal khan’s humanity in 2002 on THE FOOTPATH. One of the Best humanity of the century. HUHUHUHU………

  • @ hrithik :
I have never said anything against BB , because I don’t want myself to prove ‘intelligent’ like Bhai fans, lol .
    Next Eid :
    MiyanBhai vs Bhojpuri Bhai !!!

  • DCH has surely changed the life of many youngsters, as they have turned into idiots, and are calling DCH as ‘cult’, lol .
If DCH is a cult film (lol, very few people know about that film) , then MSG is also a cult !!!

  • @Hrithik : even Swades ? ROFL, ROFL.. It changed many lives of Youngsters.. LOL.. LOL..!!

Jali na such sun kar? can feel it, that’s why you jumped to unrelated things otherwise none can even compare Iconic/Cult film like Swades with overrated DCH except a bhojpuri like you..

@The Phenom : hahaha.. no problem if they call DCH a cult film as they even call Tere Naam Cult Film too.. LOL, even some of them call Dabangg cult too.. LOL.. but rated it over an Iconic Film like Swades is something for which everyone will call him a sick person.. & became a sick only after watching DCH which has changed his life but if it has changed 2010 born Bhojpuri fans’ lives or not by making them sick still the truth will remain a truth that Farhan with amiri Kaun : FLOP.. Farhan with Hrithik : Flop. & Farhan with SRK : Hit.. & Nikhil with SRK : Hit.. Nikhil with Akki : Flop & Nikhil with Salman : FLOP.. just like SRK’s Solo Don ( HIT) vs Bhai’s Multistarrer JEM ( FLOP ) ..

  • @ Phenom what you know about DCH? It is the most loved film of youth. You dont know any shit so shut your mouth. Your koyla khan cant even do that cult movie. BTW no one remembers that overrated crap KHn which was hit only due to Dharma factor. Your star’s whole career depended on dharma and YRF banners and now he is depending on rohit and deepika. Shame on you.

  • @asad nanga kaun? Ashutosh’a debut directorial was lagaan which was superhit and won him accolades and made him overnight star by working with the king megastar Aamir khan. But his next Swadesh with tiny star Sharukhi Kaun was mega flop disaster and that’s how his career started sinking, but then superstar hrithik’s JA saved him once again and them again AB’s JJWS became disaster and now again he is working with hrithim and hrithik will save his career. So sad! So ashutosh has only success with megastar aamir khan and superstar hrithik roshan but unfortunately flop tiny stars like Sharukhi Kaun and Abhishek are responsible for the failures of talented director ashutosh gowarikar. So sad !!! 😪😵

  • @The phenom lol!! Well said bro. @Hrithik << this Bhaitard is a 5th fail student like his Idol Criminal khan. He has no common sense. Actually most of the bhaitards are illiterate but this one is most dumb. May God save his future life!! HUHUHU……….

  • I am a huge SRK FAN and KHNH is one of my all time favourite movie. I think Hero will be an average type of movie as it has a song which is sung by buddha gay salman. HUHU…..

  • @Iam SRkian : I already proved a 2nd failure you retard. One for example of your retardness is your comment Bhai struggled to give 200 crs WW in 2014. I guess Srk starred in Kick wearing Salman’s mask !!!!!!! HuHuHu HaHaHa HeHeHe !!!!!! Jalli naa ?? Is mein kick Hai !!!!! You keep crying over Salman’s personal life he keeps kicking your butt every year with BB or ATBB or highest grosser than hakla king !!!!!!!!

    Too much fun !!!!!!

  • @Phenom : Now seriously I have a doubt on your mentality. If you haven’t watched DCH let me know I can gift (courier) you a DVD of it !!!!! DCH was a revolution in generations but if you were a kid (less than 7 yrs old) at that time then I can’t blame you. You wudnt have understand what is youth, what is friendship n what is love. Goa became more famous just because of DCH n registered tremendous hike in tourism there. Even baggie jeans & six pockets pants trend started due to this movie. If you say DCH was not cult then you are doubting Farhan’s credentials as a director !!!!!!!!!

  • @I am an idiot : If DCH is not cult so is Swades is not classic !!!!!! Simple. Swades was never a cult movie but inspired some NRIs to attract towards motherland country !!!!!!! Tere Naam remains a cult movie even Indicine had stated once but you blind fanatics will never accept. May be Maya Memsaab is cult for you not movies like DCH or Tere Naam or Andaaz Apna Apna. I can’t blame you more jiska idol soft pornstar ho uski choice aisi hi hogi !!!!!!!!! :-p

  • @ Rew1 :
    Lol
    KHNH — Big banner + Good starcast + non-holiday = 35 cr (HIT)
DCH — Big banner + Good starcast + Independence Day holiday = 20 cr (Below Average)
Ha ha ha … , too much funnn !

  • @ hrithik :
A crap remake like Tere Naam is ‘cult’ ?
    LOL
No doubt Tere Naam is much better than other Bhai movies , but calling it ‘cult’ is like calling Bhai a good actor, lol !
I can’t blame you more jiska idol criminal ho uski choice aisi hi hogi !!!

  • @Hrithik HUHUHU!! grow up boy!!! your behaviour is look like a child. So PLZ dont cry. and ALWAYS remember that- SRK WAS NO.1, IS NO.1 AND WILL BE NO.1 MOVIE STAR FOREVER BEFORE DIE. HUHU……..

  • @Hrithik oh really??? But what about FLOP HO??? HUHUHU…. THE movie which was failed to break even 3 years before released RA.1’s collection. Lol what a Shame!!!!

  • @phenomenal retard
Your brain sucks as much as your 2 rs star’s talent and stardom sucks without yrf and dharma banner. You retard dil chahta hai was clean hit. If dil chahta hai was below average than Ra.one was disaster and don 2 was also below average. So either accept dil chahta hai as clean hit or accept Ra.one as disaster and don 2 as below average. You 2 rs bakritard.

  • @ Ra1 :
I think you liked Ra.One very much , that’s why your ID is inspired from that film, lol !
    Anyway …

How many links you want , you 2 paise Tingutard ?
Independence Day weekend has witnessed some of the biggest Hits in the history of Indian Cinema like Sholay, HAHK, Chennai Express … At the same time, Tingumir, with the help of huge starcast , and so-called ‘cult film’ (LOL, a bigg LOL) can’t guarantee a HIT…, a 2 paise actor !
Get lost, you 2009-born Tingutard !!!

  • @Phenom : Very smartly you tried to go off topic. Your last comment proves your hypocrisy n manipulation mentality. Lol !!!! I gave you fitting reply about Cult n you are giving links on Legend. Debate topic is not about legend but cult, this shows you don’t have a proper reply n accepted Tere Naam is a cult. This is enough to show you gave up. Hope you know what cult means !!!!!!!!!

  • @Hrithik HUHUHU…. BARKING AS MUCH AS YOU WANT. I DONT MIND!!! BUT THE TRUTH IS NEVER CHANGE!!! ONLY LEGEND SRK RULESSS…… :) HUHUHUHU ……………

  • @Hrithik legend??? Of course your criminal idol is also a legend of his CRAP MOVIES. LOL #SRKBestStarOfAllTime HUHUHUHU……..

  • @ hrithik :
You loser, you completely misguided me. It’s Satish Kaushik who is calling Tere Naam (his own film, lol) as cult . Indicine never said so .
But look at my link . Indicine described SRK as — “The legendary Shah Rukh Khan …”
Hope you understand what Legend means !!!

  • @Phenomenal goof : First learn the meaning of ‘Cult’ then come back and debate with me. It is because of fans like you srk has so many haters, even who acknowledge his hard work are forced to bash him for such pathetic fans !!!!!!!!! It will only harm you and your idol when you keep turning a blind eye towards other actors’ contributions towards industry !!!!!!!!!! Blind fanatics !!!!!!!!!!
