Hrithik Roshan’s Kaabil has done well in its first extended weekend at the box office, collecting Rs 67.46 crore in the first 5 days of its release. The big days came on Tuesday (holiday for Republic Day) and Saturday.
The film opened very well on Sunday too and business was excellent through the day before the T20 cricket match affected the business of both Kaabil and Raees, 7PM onwards.
Monday will decide where Kaabil goes. Good holds during the weekdays will ensure that Kaabil will retain most of its shows and also get the bigger capacity screens. The audience who watched Raees (which was clearly the first choice in the first weekend) could opt to watch Kaabil in theatres this coming weekend.
If the trend doesn’t fall in favour of the film, the Roshans have only themselves to blame for going ahead with clash and ruining a potential big grosser for Hrithik Roshan. Even a top superstar like Shah Rukh Khan decided to avert the clash with Sultan, quickly realising that noone can challenge the might of Salman Khan during the Eid weekend – even though he had a film that was tailor-made for the Eid period. Raees will lose money too because of the clash, but SRK has clearly won the perception game here which should help him keep the Christmas 2018 weekend all for himself.
Side note: There has been a lot of debate over the ‘inflated’ box office collections of Kaabil and we’ve been talking to a people in the trade about all the figures that have been doing the rounds. We’ve also been gathering collections from various circuits as well as multiplex chains. The actuals or the ‘truth’ lies somewhere in between. The collections are nowhere as low as what’s being quoted as the ‘trade number’, nor is it as high as what the producers have been quoting.
It’s high time for the industry to get an independent credible source, which works with producers, distributors and exhibitors – verifies and reverifies the figures with multiple sources – before putting out the final numbers. Even though it’s impossible to release accurate figures on a daily basis, numbers could be put out after the weekend or at the end of the first week.
In a clash like this where ego, perception and reputation built over entire careers are at stake, absolutely anything is possible. There is no source that’s ‘holier-than-thou’ here. Smart manipulation of figures can happen at every level, even at the exhibitor (theatre) level and those who are willing to shell out money, can get anything done. The smallest of margins can make the good to look excellent and the average to look poor. The game is in the smallest of margins.

And noone blindly supports BOI. Its the same BOI who updated HAHK from 68 to 72 cr, and footfalls from 5 cr to 7 cr, but decrease both collections+footfalls of both DDLJ and Raja Hindustani.
OK even I accept HNY was 36 crore, but mind you PRDP was also 192 crore not 200 crore(sorry for the typo in upper comment)and ETT was also not 199 crore. That says it all.
And its not BOI, every other trade websites early estimate are given in late night. That happened in Indicine too for 2 days. But actual figures are always 2-3 cr higher

Having spent some important years of my life into maintaining a bollywood reviews, ratings and news portal, I can mention few things about the business.
The main incoming revenue is from reviews and ratings which sometime involves big packets to get a better ratings. The reviewers are often enticed with monetary rewards to provide better ratings. This is a known practice, prevalent in trade circles and also in media industry (including the news papers). Sometimes, the ratings for the movies used to change at the last moment and on somedays we were asked to follow the collections provided on phone.
I remember a good instance of this being brought to the front by BOI in May 2005 when “Bunty & Bubbly” was released by YRF. BOI alleged on their website (couple of days before the release of movie) about a conspiracy from YRF to buy the ratings and getting the movie tagged as a HIT.
Several years since then, this practices are still being followed and specially the big stars and big houses are able to get the figures manipulated.
BOI has been a reputed name for so many years and has build up a trust value within the circle. However, in case of Raees vs Kaabil clash something does not seem right. As per BOI update, it seems BOI are quite keen to put a flop tag to Kaabil movie. Not sure why. I have been following their update for last 5 days but somehow could not control myself and hence decided to put this post. The so called trade figures for Kaabil seems to repoted less then the actual trade figures. On the other hand the official figure seems inflated then the actual one. So the actual is higher then what BOI reported and lower then what officially released.
The competition between Raees and Kaabil has turned out to be a decent one. However if it started on a 50-50 screen share basis then it would have been a very competitive fight then what it appears out to be.
I am pretty sure that some of the SRK or HR fans will try to bash my post but I am only posting on what I have experienced and what I feel. If you disagree then ignore the post and move on as bashing or posting any abuses is not going to change the reality……
All the media favouring khan’s..so they always try to degrade hrithik..because he is the one who challenge them..
Bang Bang produced by Fox..but this controversy of manipulation is also there at that time..why fox not inflated their other productions earnings..why hrithik kya unka saga hai…

But you should also remember that whenever I entered into an argument with you or someone else, I always told that since we are commenting on a website which relies on official figures, we don’t have any rights to talk about manipulation (which is a creation of some other website).
But here in this case, you can see indicine has clearly stated “The collections are nowhere as low as what’s being quoted as the ‘trade number’, nor is it as high as what the producers have been quoting.” that’s why I posted the above comment.
Had indicine not spoken about the Kaabil manipulation, I was never going to talk about it, but since they have spoken about it I just put my points across.
Rest assured, even now I will follow the official collections because I don’t set different standards for different stars.

Salman’s stake on Eid weekend was more since he has been releasing his movies on Eid for quite sometime plus proximity of SRK with YRF was also played a key role in postponement.
If Raees and Sultan would have had to clash that would have been a trouble for both YRF as well as Red chillies – right from the screen sharing/distribution to release.
At the same time, if you look at the chronologies of announcement of TZH, Thugs of Hindostaan and Anand L Rai’s next, You can’t rule out an under table agreement between YRF and SRK
So there were a number of factors behind the postponement of Raees, but if it makes you happy that Raees was postponed solely because of Salman’s star power, then be happy!!!!
Salman is releasing his movies on eid from so manu years and still wasnt able to give hgoat but srk released 1 movie on eid and gave hgoat !! This sums up the diff bw srk and salman ! Salman is an eid made chota star who is nothing but a labour in front of SRK !!

Well, fully agree with the points you have made. But, can I ask you a simple question….. Where was this wonderful sense during HNY time? We were involved in hundreds of debate over HNY opening day collections. All the time I had given similar logical points like screen count, ticket price, occupancy etc. But you always denied those facts and blindly defended official figures.

But indicine.com the collections of dangal,3 idiots,pk,chennai express,dabang 1&2 etc have maximum difference of 10 to 15 crore in between trade figures and producers figures.

sorry state of affairs of kaabil movie and its team.. as manipulation of 10 % everybody can understand, but manipulation of this sort like 53 by some trade source and 67 by producer figure.. its rakesh roshan is at largely at fault.. it happened with krissh also..he keeps repeating the manipulation..honesty and integrity of veteran is questional.. may be he is crook and quack by nature..and as far as even the word of mouth is overrated because theatres are empty… it happened with shivaay also… ADHM AND RAEES shown same figures..
Yes very true I don’t trust Boi. They did the same to Shivaay and then immediately 1week from 8.45 to 9.35 opening day and people were calling Ajay manipulator.
Same now with Hrithik which I personally think they have a big bief with.You will see soon even Raees actual collection will be increased by BOI once they realize their mistake or finally gather facts because it is harder to track Single Screen collection than Multiplex. Rowdy Rathode and Ready too their real collection is much higher than what Boi is declaring. So instead of blaming Rakesh Ajay camps have a broader knowledge and know that even your favorite actor movies can be under reported like Ready Rowdy Rathode (136 actual) and even Raees collection are underreported Raees collection is more than Boi just that other Sites are playing Safe so that Raees does not fall under the microscope like how Kaabil has been Victimized.

Since 4-5 years we have seen difference in trade figures and official collection. There are numerous time when we seen the huge manipulation. But guess what it is second time we are reading these kind of article from indicine and it is happening again with HR &SRK fans.
First when K3 declare as all time grosser surpassing CE and now when Raees released with Kaabil.
Everyone know that I am always taking BOI collection irrespective of official figure of any actors (Aamir Khan included) but I am 100% sure now that BOI have under reported collection of K3 & Kaabil. Also Roshans over reported collection both times.
I have closely followed BOI this time and seen that they declared Raees 2nd & 3rd day collection in morning around 11 am, but Kaabil collection were updated 1 hour later in both day. Why can’t they give both collection in 10-15 mins. Something is fishy.
So they are definitely trying Hrithik to pull down though i still believed that in Bang- Bang case their figures are still accurate as that movie didn’t had that strong wom to get 180 cr on non-holiday pre diwali period while Both K3 & Kaabil had better wom.
So here on I will take median figure as collection for K3 & Kaabil.
So K3 collected around 215cr (all version) and Kaabil has collected 60cr in 5 days extended weekend.
Problem is not Kaabil collection but problem is that hrithik Roshan is breaking into top 3
He is the biggest danger for khans in bollywood

It makes sense to have some discrepancies. Even BOI knows that as their numbers aren’t exact to the dot. Having a 10-20? discrepancy on a big grosser is acceptable. For example, There’s a small gap in Dangal’s numbers, no one makes a fuss because a 10 crore gap in 380 crore is nothing.
But this is insane here, almost 30? discrepancy and it’s a low grossing movie. Kkrrish 3 had a 40? discrepancy. These are not just coincidences. 13 crore discrepancy on a 50 crore movie is too high.
Indicine doesn’t have their own tracking, so no point blaming them but Rakesh Roshan is an unethical man, no doubt about that.
