Nothing against Shahrukh Khan or Karan Johar here. But watching every news channel and newspaper give My Name Is Khan national importance, is hard to digest. Even now with the film having released across all multiplexes in India, the topic of discussion and debate continues to be the film.
Surely there are bigger problems in the country, that deserve more coverage and importance, don’t you think?
Also would other actors get the same backing from the media, the government and not to mention the industry, as MNIK has?
1) When Aamir Khan’s Fanna was banned in Gujarat, not many stood up for the actor, least the media. The producers (Yashraj) lost a lot of money.
2) Hrithik Roshan’s last film Jodha Akbar too was banned in Rajasthan, later in Madhya Pradesh and eventually in UP. Where was the government, the media? Why wasn’t the same security and assurance provided to the film and its makers? The film lost 6 – 8 crores, no less.
All we are trying to say here is, irrespective of how big / small the film is, irrespective of who the lead star is, every film that is passed by the censor board should witness a smooth release all over.
@Halakoo can u avoid mentioning Johnny Depp and SRK in one sentence? no comparison at all…..a lot of the indians in the UK (here where I stay), did not go and watch the movie…..so I wonder where the smashing records are from…….!
@Sami, is it possible u leave Salman Khan out of this? It is disgusting that a movie has taken precedence over more important things in the country….! So lets face the topic here: which is why is the film still getting that much publicity? I do not think Salman was mentioned in the article we are all commenting on and before I forget: the amount of people that look Salman up everyday including u has made him the most searched Indian celebrity on the internet. I went to the cinema last nite, MNIK was empty, I ended up watching Valentine’s Day which is a better film and according to my friend who went see MNIK: she said only one thing: did they say MNIK is better than 3 idiots? The Pune blasts is tragic :( So many innocent people are dying. We do not feel safe anywhere in the country, especially in Mumbai.
We had to attend this Bachchan Bol event the other day and for a change decided to travel by Train to Bandra Kurla, where the event was supposed to take place. Absolutely no security, just a announcement that if you find any baggage lying underneath or somewhere in the compartment, be quick to inform a official. And those regular travelers are so used to hearing these announcements that they hardly moved or looked around.
The government doesn’t care, for the media its all about TRP’s.. The people, each time they step out, continue to live in fear.

Box Office: MNIK opens in half of Mumbai, at 75%, running 30% in interiors, no release in Pune still

Trade Publicists may be declaring 100% openings for MNIK but if it’s opened 100%, it’s certainly not in the country of India where it is more noise than actual box office weight at this point.
In fact My Name is Khan did not open in Maharashtra at all as scheduled till Friday afternoon. In many parts of the country, including centers such as Pune, Nasik, Bharuch etc. it *still* hasn’t opened going into Saturday. After Mumbai, Pune is the biggest grossing center of Maharashtra. In Mumbai, it finally opened in only 13 halls at some multiplexes like Fun Republic in Andheri in afternoon where it got about 75% response upon opening. However the film continues to be losing as many single screen theaters and a few multiplexes in the city are still are not screening the film, affecting collections.
In interiors, the notion that a movie called ‘My Name is Khan’ would be getting a 80-100% response in small town India not only intuitively was always hard to believe, it happens to be flat out blatantly incorrect now also now that it’s released. The typical response in single screen/smaller centers for My Name is Khan is more like 8% not 80%. For example, Tarun cinema in Durg (Chattisgarh) has no more than 8% bookings for MNIK coming up. And this can be verified immediately by calling 09329108274 or visiting. In Cinemagic in Bikaner (Rajasthan), the Friday evening collections are around 10% which is also extremely poor.
In hindi belt centers like Kanpur UP, the evening shows are going about 40%, which is poor. In Meerut (west UP) evening shows are around 25% which is very poor. Indore (MP) multiplexes are about 65% which is average. Jaipur (Rajasthan) evening shows are going around 40-50% which is average/below average.
It is true the film has opened to good collections of 80%+ in Bangalore and Hyderabad multiplexes and Delhi , but it is also true that in other extreme parts many multiplexes don’t have bookings of even 30% despite not having any shiv sena there. For example Fame Highlandpark in Calcutta has no more than 30% bookings right now (Friday evening 6PM IST). And this too can be verified directly at the theater.
Overall all the publicity apart, MNIK is having an average Friday outside of 3-4 media centers where it has opened well. The film can still pick up or it can crash tomorrow even further. But its decisive indicator will be Monday. As where the bookings are good, they were similar for Kurbaan (the flop on similar theme) last November also, and Kurbaan released on massive prints before sinking away. So monday will be first major indicator as to whether the movie is a similar loser, earner or a disastrous sunk reject commercially,
Pune bomb blast! This is the price of srk’s publicity stunt and government’s butt licking act to srk. This is the cost of saving one man and its film, whereas sacrificing the aadmi. would you still go and watch this movie, the movie for which whole police force protected but failed to protect aam junta?

The Shiv Sena Friday night claimed “victory” in its agitation against Shah Rukh Khan and his movie and the party “congratulated” all its activists for the success.
In a signed statement issued on late Friday night, Sena chief Bal Thackeray also lashed out at the Maharashtra government for trying to make My Name Is Khan a success by cracking down on thousands of Shiv Sena workers, arresting them and putting them behind bars.
“If patriotism and love for our country is a crime, then we shall commit the crime repeatedly,” the statement said, indicating that the Sena agitation is likely to continue further.
Thackeray said that while the MNIK show did not go houseful despite Congressmen buying tickets, jails were “houseful with the arrested Sainiks”.
