FAN has collected Rs 18-19 crore on Sunday at the box office, taking the 3-day collections to 52 – 53 crore net – as per early estimates (official collections will be published in the morning).
Multiplex business did show decent growth on the 3rd day, especially at metro cities where the occupancy for the noon and evening shows was pretty good.
Monday now becomes all important for the Shah Rukh Khan starrer. Tickets at multiplexes are sold for a cheaper price during the weekdays. For example, PVR Juhu in Mumbai was selling night show tickets for Rs 380 for the weekend, the same show ticket for the weekdays (Monday to Thursday) is 30% cheaper at Rs 270.
Since the film is performing mainly at multiplexes, the drop in ticket prices will have an impact on business.
Ideally, FAN needs to hold to around the 9-10 crore mark on Monday. This would give the film a fair chance of not only recovering costs, but going on to become a decent grosser.

Connection bhi na kamaal ki cheez hain, bas ho gaya toh ho gaya… This dialogue wonderfully sums up Gaurav’s thoughts about the superstar he hero-worships in FAN. Conversely, this line holds true for *all* movies nowadays. Either you connect with a film or you don’t.
A few days ago, while talking to a prestigious international website, I made a valid observation about Shah Rukh Khan’s choices of films. The actor is making a genuine effort to step out of the comfort zone [read romantic sagas, masala entertainers et al] to work in hatke films. Sure, hatke is a much-used and abused terminology in Bollywood, but SRK is making an earnest attempt to be part of films that defy the stereotype. Stepping into characters he hasn’t portrayed in the past. Working with directors he hasn’t worked with previously. The shelf life of an actor expands automatically in the process, since the movie-going audience is keen to watch their fav actor in characters he hasn’t portrayed before.
FAN is a step in the right direction, in my opinion. The viewers have connected big time with SRK’s interpretation of the fan, who transforms from being a hero-worshipper to hero-stalker. But what about the film? Has it connected with the audience? At urban centres, yes. In mass circuits, unfortunately, the numbers are not as expected.
Come to think of it, it can’t get bigger than Yash Raj and SRK joining hands for a film project. However, this time around, it wasn’t Yash Chopra or Aditya Chopra on the director’s seat. It was Maneesh Sharma, a storyteller who has helmed some wonderful films for YRF in the past, calling the shots.
FAN, like we know by now, is not the usual masala film or the standard rom-com. Also, it’s a songless film [a strong musical score has always been one of the pillars on which YRF movies stand]. There’s no Madhuri, Juhi, Preity, Rani or Anushka in a YRF film this time. Moreover, it lacks romance — an ingredient that YRF movies are synonymous with.
Now let’s look at the release strategy. FAN wasn’t released during Eid, Diwali or Christmas, the festival period. It arrived in the midst of the IPL matches. That’s not all, the release of the film coincided with the examination period. And, most importantly, it opened a week after THE JUNGLE BOOK continues its dream run, charming and winning audience in hordes even when I pen this piece.
Come Friday and the content does the talking, while the industry [even the fans these days] speculate on how a film has opened and whether it has the stamina to collect a whopping figure on Day 1 and also in its opening weekend. FAN had to deliver impressive numbers, given the track record of YRF-SRK. FAN is also a crucial film because SRK’s last release, DILWALE, did not fare as expected in the domestic market [it did very well internationally!]. You’re as strong or weak as your last Friday in Bollywood.
Additionally, FAN is a significant film for SRK. His contemporaries, Aamir and Salman, have cruised past Rs 300 cr mark [India biz], an awe-inspiring achievement when you talk of BO rankings. SRK’s hits haven’t attained the figure yet.
I am sure, FAN was never supposed to shatter BO records from East to West and from North to South, given the ‘limitations’ [in film industry parlance] that I pointed out above. The film has connected with a segment of the paying public [urban centres], which is contributing enormously to the numbers. For SRK, FAN is a landmark film; it has won tremendous acclaim for the actor after a gap. Although he has portrayed the antagonist earlier, his performance in FAN doesn’t seem like a shadow of his earlier attempts.
Now let’s look at the economics of FAN…
Cost of production: Rs 85 cr
Print and Advertising: Rs 20 cr
Total budget of the film: Rs 105 cr

YRF has recovered a substantial amount from the pre-sale of Satellite rights, while the remaining rights [worldwide theatrical, worldwide digital – audio and video, worldwide licensing, worldwide merchandising and other rights] should ensure recovery of the investment and profits for YRF. In short, FAN should emerge a profitable venture for the investors in the final tally.
The question is, does FAN have the legs to have a meritorious run at the ticket window in weeks to come? The efforts invested in FAN from everyone associated with it have been exemplary, with SRK delivering a memorable, award-worthy act as the fan. One is eager to see how it performs at the BO, now that the opening weekend has concluded. There’s no major film releasing next Friday, hence FAN has ample time to score till BAAGHI arrives in theatres on 29 April.
It’s a wait and watch situation right now!

But at least as a SRK fan am happy that Maneesh Sharma and SRK gave a shot with this movie and tried something different. The concept of the movie was good but probably Maneesh erred in direction but still it was all worth a shot. Even a big director like Mani Ratnam has failed in Dil Se with SRK but still am happy that SRK did both Dil Se and Fan. Nobody does a movie thinking that their movie will flop at box office and that they will be fine with it. It is obvious that both Maneesh and Mani Ratnam would have also thought that it will also do good trade business but if everyone can predict audiences taste exactly then there will never be a flop movie. Fan has put up a strong number Worldwide with GROSS collections set to be around 113-114 crore. This is easily the highest figure of the year beating the 78 crore of Airlift. In terms off all time collections it is the 11th highest ever and fourth highest for an Shahrukh Khan starrer.
More than being the 11th highest, the feat is to be among more commercially viable films. No film of this sort has ever even got close to 100 crore. The film is a little lower than films like Kick and Singham Returns but higer than the likes of Jai Ho and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani.
The highest ever worldwide opening weekend is still Dhoom 3 at 193 crore followed by Bajrangi Bhaijaan at 187 crore..

There’s still a long way to go. A healthy number of 10 days. And I have a gut feeling that FAN will surpass 115+ cr. Considering Baaghi being mostly a masala movie, FAN might retain a good share of screens for another week. It is sad that it hasn’t collected as per the expectations, but on the other hand no one can deny the fact that FAN was never about BO figures. This project was very ambitious to Maneesh Sharma and it was visible in the movie. SRK as always, there are very less words for his fantastic work in FAN. You just can’t ignore it. Anyways, I hope it proves the prediction wrong which is quoted by Indicine.

I said Mahnish bcz I personally would have preferred if this movie was released after Raees not aft dilwale where many believe it’s was an average movie or not upto expectations… Yes Raees wld have shut lots of critics here @indicine by performing very well then Fan can be released(by then he has got his momentum back and will be hard for ppl to troll at him even if Fan does not go well with them) but definitely you will expect ppl to say all sort of things when two of his last movie have not done as expected by many. @ aisha : Well I understand u felt ‘sick and tired’ of the excuses given by some SRK fans in Fan and Dilwale case who I also agree did go overboard. But doesnt that happen everytime a big movie of big star underperforms unexpectedly?
And u r talking about some one like Fan the 500 cr who we dont even know is actually a SRK fan or someone like Joe the SRKian trying to bring SRK down. Was he present here before the Fan movie started and with what ID we dont even know? Few days before the Shivay release if an Ajay hater uses the id Shivay the 500 cr will u start believing he is an Ajay fan?
In PRDPs case some Salman fans also chanted 300 and 350 cr and when it underperformed they also came up with similar excuses that the movie had nothing but Salman as if Sooraj Barjatya was a nobody. Same was the case with Jai Ho. Initially huge expectations and then calling everything of the movie b grade and negative other than Salman. I dont remember seeing ur comment that u r feeling ‘sick and tired’ of those excuses by some Salman fans which were also exaggerated at that time but may be u did say that and I missed reading them. Hrithik fans must also have done the same too at the time BB underperformed.
Secondly also didnt see u feeling ‘sick n tired’ of all the incredible SRK bashing going on over here over the last few days. Getting incredible amounts of likes on comments like 100 and 150 plus purely showing hatred towards SRK and the movie and majority of those people who I m sure havent even watched the movie. I m sure that u didnt feel ‘sick n tired’ with those comments of some Salman fans and it looked quite ‘healthy n normal’ to u. Most of the exaggerated and defensive response by some SRK fans has also to do with that ‘healthy and normal’ bashing.
Honestly I do not expect any person including you to watch it and unnecessarily praise or support it. Every person has his or her dislikes and it is equally fine if someone including you opts to give it a miss. And even if someone watches it and honestly feels the movie and SRKs performance is completely crap still I will equally respect his or her decision.
