A Veeroic effort!

Love it or hate it, but Salman Khan’s Veer is one heck of a brave effort, something we would like to call a “Veeroic” effort.

At a time when comedies rule the roost in Bollywood, Salman Khan and co. opted for something distinctly different. A mixture of history, mythology and nationalism narrated with a fine balance of romance, comedy, action and the age old formulaic masala.

Also, Salman is a writer to watch out for in the future. He has great sense of drama and sets up the movie pretty well. The romantic portions were well-written and the dilemma of the princess – to choose between her kingdom or lover – was potentially a great plot for a thrilling second half, that it didn’t happen is the director and screenplay writer’s fault.

Sure, the film is not without its share of major flaws, but then its the effort we are talking about here, something both the media and critics for some reason have overlooked.

Quick recall, and history based films have always been risky, the mightiest of them have failed (Read SRK with Asoka and Aamir with Mangal Pandey). Spending 50 crores plus makes it even more riskier.

So purely for the risk and effort the makers have taken and the fact that the film has managed to do reasonably well at the box office, Veer deserves a mention as one of the first successful films of the year and the decade.

  • A film embroiled in controversy often sees more business than a film that’s not had one, what with audiences turning up to watch the film to

figure out what the controversy is all about.

And this seems to have worked for Veer too, the Salman-starrer period flick that saw better occupancy on Sunday, than the last week, in various cinema halls in Jaipur. The film ran into rough waters on Saturday morning when a representative group of the Rajput community, Karni Sena, protested against some dialogues used in the film that they feel are derogatory to Rajputs.

But apparently, after the protests on Saturday, Veer saw more footfalls on Sunday in at least some of the movie halls in the city. Says Vikramaditya Maitreya, unit manager of Inox Vaibhav, where members of Karni Sena carried out protests against the film, “We have registered nearly 30 percent increase in the occupancy on our shows on Sunday, after the controversy sprang up. But I would also attribute the higher footfalls to the weekend.” Adds Ujjwal Srivastava, manager of First Cinema, “Since Veer didn’t witness a great opening, we were expecting a dip of 20 per cent occupancy in the second week. But surprisingly, the occupancy has gone up by 15 percent on all our shows on Sunday. I would attribute this to the controversy and the protests surrounding it. I think people are intrigued about the issue and the scenes that led to the controversy.” But there are some who say that the footfalls have remained unaffected, post the controversy.

Ashish Sharma, team leader operations, Entertainment Paradise, opines, “The controversy hasn’t changed the level of occupancy at all because in my opinion, in case of films, the word-of-mouth matters a lot. As the film isn’t a runaway hit, even the controversy can’t attract the audiences at this stage. And new films are also on from this Friday, and people are thinking twice before buying the tickets.” Similarly Vishal Kapur, Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Fun Cinema observes, “Because of the ruckus created by the Karni Sena in our property, we had to cancel two morning show on Saturday. But police then provided protection and now things are back to normal. But the numbers don’t show any significant change in the occupancy. It is pretty normal.” However, on conditions of anonymity a source at Fun Cinema says, “Any publicity is good publicity. So this one has also worked in favour of the film and the occupancy has gone up because of increase in curiosity among Jaipurites about the movie. Usually, a film that has a slow start doesn’t see a rise in occupancy in the second week. But this has.”

  • Veer Drops Over Second Weekend

    Tuesday 2nd February 2010 09.30 IST

    Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Veer dropped over its second weekend with around 5.25 crore nett business. The drop is around 70-75% from the first weekend. Multiplexes have seen business fall around 80-85% while single screens have fallen around 65%.

This takes the 10 day business of Veer to around 36.25 crore nett including the Telugu version. The film should add another 2.50-2.75 crore nett over the weekdays for a near 8 crore nett total for week two.

Veer is looking at lifetime business of around 42 crore nett and a distributor share of 25-26 crore. Veer is a very rare case for a big film that only 30% of its lifetime nett business will come from all India multiplexes while all the rest will be from single screens.

  • Veer ne phod diya
Veer ne 2nd weekend 5.25 cr kar ke Phod diya
    no guyes phod nahi diya
    phod di
Eros and Vijay Gilani ki kismat phod di.
    correct ur gramer please.

  • @Hina boxofficeindia mentioned precisely last week collection near about 32.50 now they mentioned 30 crore few lac .Still lot of confusion i think whole film industry under influence of such people which dont like salman.

  • same case happened with Kambakht Ishq and De dana dan. after good 1st week 2nd week movies fell down. and now veer’s turn.
a good movie should sustain in 2nd week aswell , like 3 idiots, Ghajini and TZP.

  • Zeeshan
1st week was near to 33 cr and 2nd weekend is 5.25 it means total is near to 38-39.
add 2,3 cr more n rest 4 days so total will be near to 42 cr in 2 weeks
    and life time 45-46 cr
and it will get avrage tag.
    so
Veer Life Time 46 cr Avarage
and now every sallu fan will angry on me again.
yar tum sab ko kia problem hai agar koi such bole true collections and true verdict likhe to ???
    Veer ne Phod di…..

  • hi to all guys,
BOI hamesha low collections deta hai.
    when 1st week was 32.97
    thn BOI said 32.5
now 2nd weekend BOI said 5.25
it means it wl b definitely 6 cr
    so total india nett is 32.97+ 6 cr= 38.97+ 15 cr (oversease)
    tatal ww = 53.97
next 4 days wl b atleast 2.1 cr
    total 2 weeks ww= 56 cr nett.
    3rd week wl b= 4-5 cr
    total 3 weeks =60 cr nett+ 2-3 cr (os)=62 cr ww nett
    4th week= 2cr
    5th week =1 cr
    lifetime= 65 cr nett

  • Veer is an avg film.first i thought it will earn around 48core+ but now i think it will earn 45 core net at max.another ki.

  • @Nauman so you think that veer will be average or above average movie.I think after extremly harsh comments to sustain movie in such situation a huge credibility of sallu.

  • @Zeeshan ..They do alot of re-evaluations n dats y difference occurs. You are right even Taran gave 32.97 carores for 1st week.May be in coming days we will know the exact details n calculations.Dun worry INSHALLAH “aal will be well 4 Salman’s Veer”.

@Nauman ..You will get more enemies on this site coz of the words u use n how u use. There is a difference of 3carores coming up in the 1st week collections now.N BOI has taken years to update the collections so do have other sites.I feel there is something fishy fishy.N stop crying for Akki’s blue n DDD.All is gone.We are concerned with Veer only.

    B4 Veer Came:

Three Points that were constantly being made by Salman’s haters were:

    1) Salman’s movies don’t open well..Veer has over-come dat remarkably. It has done great business over its 1st weekend against all odds.

2)Salman’s fans just blog neva watch movies in his theaters..Veer has been watched by his die-hard fans many times, which is a great thing coz it re-establishes him as a mega star.

3)Where is Salman’s Star Power?A good movie like LD got flopped. Now Veer has buzzed everywhere after getting the worst possible reviews.Veer has brought back Salman’s magic.

As Indicine said, love it or hate it its a Veeoic Effort.Salman’s fans are satisfied n so is Salman. What else????

  • @Hina absolutely right .Lets hope 4 the best .Next week will be so much crucial for the veer.I think veer will finish with 50 + in india.
