Most successful Bollywood actors 1990 – 1999

We finally have the analysis of the most successful actors between 1990 – 1999. It’s a decade that marked the rise of the three Khans, while Ajay Devgn and Akshay Kumar were growing their fanbase and delivering quite a few hits in between.

Salman Khan leads in every category – highest net collections, success ratio, hit ratio and the best average per film. He also has the highest grosser and the most watched film of the 90s in Sooraj Barjatya’s Hum Aapke Hain Kaun.

Salman and Shah Rukh are the only two actors to average more than 10 crore plus per film.

Most number of films:

  • Akshay Kumar – 42 films
  • Ajay Devgn –  33 films
  • Salman Khan – 29 films
  • Shah Rukh Khan –  28 films
  • Aamir Khan – 23 films

Total Net Collections for each actor between 1990 - 1999:

  • Salman Khan – 375 crore
  • Shah Rukh Khan – 327 crore
  • Ajay Devgn –  221 crore
  • Akshay Kumar - 196 crore
  • Aamir Khan –  186 crore

Average net box office collections per film between 1990 - 1999

  • Salman Khan –  12.9 crore
  • Shah Rukh Khan –  11.7 crore
  • Aamir Khan –  8.1 crore
  • Ajay Devgn - 6.7 crore
  • Akshay Kumar – 4.7 crore

Success Ratio i.e Above Average or better

  • Salman Khan – 52%
  • Shah Rukh Khan – 39%
  • Ajay Devgn –  36%
  • Aamir Khan – 35%
  • Akshay Kumar - 24%

Hit Ratio i.e Hit or Better

  • Salman Khan – 45%
  • Shah Rukh Khan – 32%
  • Aamir Khan – 22%
  • Ajay Devgn – 18%
  • Akshay Kumar - 10%

Note: We haven’t included two prolific actors – Sunny Deol and Govinda – in the list. Deol was a superstar, even though he wasn’t very consistent at the box office. He had quite a few hugely successful films like Border, Darr, Zindi and Ghatak, just to name a few. Govinda delivered several hits with David Dhawan and was one of the most popular and successful actors of the 90s. We are currently in the process of retrieving data from old film magazines. We are also working with a well-known trade analyst to rectify the 90s data, which isn’t as accurate as we’d want it to be at the moment.

    Shameful for Salmanics
Salmanics have to include Kuch Kuch Hota hai in Salman’s filmography to march ahead of two year later debuted SRK

  • These telephone conversations between Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai were recorded between August 28-30, 2001. Ash was supposed to leave for a long tour of the US. Salman starts calling her on the eve of her departure.

The conversations start friendly enough, but rapidly degenerate into threats, boasts and abuse. Following are excerpts from the Salman Tapes:

    Aishwarya Rai: Hello.

Salman Khan: I want you to do the Abu Salem show. Hello?

SK: When I told you to do the Salem show you put the phone down. F**k you. You are doing the Salem show because of me. I asked you to the Salem show. You are not talking to me.

    Ash: F**k you.

SK: You f***ing bitch. Are you doing the Salem show or not? I want to know whether you are doing the Salem show or not?

Ash: Oh really, you got drunk.

    Ash: Your phone is tapped.

SK: You know my phone is tapped. I want to save my own ass, you f***ing b***h. I would like to know whether you are doing the show or not.

    Ash: Salman.

SK: No, tell me, you f***ing b***h whether you are doing the Salem show or not.

    Ash: You’re too late.

SK: You know Chori Chori Chupke Chupke? I was the only one who knew it was a Chhota Shakeel film.

Ash: Listen, listen. Now stop it, Salman.

SK: I will call up Salem and compromise. You don’t know anything that is happening. It is a big bad world. You don’t know the connectivity (sic) of the underworld.

No listen to me. Chori Chori Chupke Chupke was a Chhota Shakeel film. I was the only one who knew. Not even Nadeem Rizvi or Bharat Shah.

I did this role because I was scared of Chhota Shakeel… (Shakeel said) Yeh Mussalman aadmi hamara Hindustan ko agey lekar jayega. So I did Chhota Shakeel’s film and that is what I had to do.

Ab mujhe Salem Saheb ke phone aa rahe hain.

Ab aap ke mere relationship hain. Jaise Dawood Bhai mere bade bhai ke relationship hain. Chhota Shakeel ka mere relationship hain. To aap ka hoga. We are hand in glove.

    Ash: Hello?

SK: Abi aap ne disconnect nahin kiya. Itna information ley liya phone pe.

    Ash: Hello?

Kyonke main underworld se taluk rakta hoon… mujhse contact nahin rakna? (They get disconnected)

SK: Phone nahin rakha. Mere liye point prove karne ke liye. Ha. Tum ne kabhi Salem se baat nahin kiya?

Ash. RAW hain jo mere conversation sun reha hain.

Dawood Ibrahim kuch nahin hai. Salem kuch nahin hain. Chhota Shakeel kuch nahin. Jo bhi hain woh main hoon.

Yeh muje malum hain ki Ash ka phone tapped hain. Is liye disconnect ho gaya. Muje malum hain mera phone tapped hain. Ash law abiding citizen hain. Unhone London airport mein phone guma diya. Kyonke main underworld se taluk rakta hoon. To mujse contact nahin rakna?

    Ash: Ho Ho.

SK: You are trying to pretend you don’t have to do anything with me. Suno mere bhai suno. Salman Khan, don’t you dare…

    Ash: Yeah?

SK: You had a problem. You call me up.

Ash: I called you up because I had a problem. SK: You never call me up otherwise. Anyway Ashji. You are going to be there for 47 days. Ok, 47 days my guys are there. They will watch what you do there like the last trip.

Ash: Salman Khan, don’t you dare.

SK: Don’t you dare f**k with me, Ash. I know Abu Salem, Chhota Shakeel, Dawood Ibrahim, Guru Satam…

SK: Underworld people call me up here. I am their main man in Bombay. I do all that s**t.

Ash: Stop it. Don’t talk nonsense. You can get into trouble.

    Ash: Ok, Christ.

SK: F**k you. F**k you. Don’t use that language towards me.

    Ash: Stop it.

SK: You use abusive language against me.

I know Abu Salem, Chhota Shakeel and I know Dawood Ibrahim and Chhota Rajan. I know Guru Satam and all these underworld people.

If I say ,”Aisi r***i ne mujhse aise baat ki”, they will shoot you. Pehle baap ko maro m*******d, phir bhai ko maro, phir isko maro. Pehle pao pe maro, phir thigh pe maro, phir haat pe maro.

I have the power to do that. You know I can do that. It is a fact, it is a fact

SK: Because of my connection with the underworld Abu Salem will speak to you. I know all the people.

Ash: Salman Khan, stop all this rubbish. What is this?

SK: It is a fact, it is a fact.

  • @javeda:

Hahaha…Read the article again. Bhai is miles ahead of SRK in each and every aspect (be it hit ratio, success ratio, total collections, avg per movie or highest grosser). Still putting srk name ahead of Bhai!!! Jaldi se ILAAZ karwa apna!

  • Total Net Collections for each actor between 1990 – 1999:

    Shah Rukh Khan – 32%

    Highest grosser of the decade

    Salman Khan – 69cr.
    Shah rukh Khan – 61cr.

Now should I say who is the real KING of Bollywood???

  • @ hrithik, what shameful moment for srkians u talking about ?srk debuted in Bollywood after 3 years of salman.but he was at no 2 in net collections ,average, success ratio and hit ratio i.e. in all categories only behind salman.is it shameful moment ?aamir Khan is at no 5 in net collection and no. 4 in success ratio.so from your logic aamir khan is ‘tiny star ‘.

  • lol what chartbuster song has to do with popularity it is because of the music director & singer not cause of the actor. even newbie can have chartbuster song.

  • Some salman fans are hiding behind aamir ‘s name.actually they are taking support from aamir fans to degrade SRK.they proved salman fans are worst fan base. shame on everyone. !!!!

  • @Rubal, If mulstarrers are not counted to an actors credit ,please let me know any 10 solohits of Amitabh Bachchan and compare the length of salman in kkhh and AB in Roti ka makaan .Will not u call AB the biggest megastar ever ?

  • @hrithik it’s not crying. Getting free ride and stealing credits from others success as your own success is in the blood of you all bhojpuris. Everyone knows taht lallu only had success of others thali and got hits only due to multistarrer unlike srk who got huge success on his own. How long will you all hide behind madhuri’s success and keep manipulating fake success of your star in 1990s. HAJK was huge success not because of salman but due to madhuri. Get this in your head. Almost all his success were multistarrers and that’s why he is riding high by hiding behind others shoulders. Lol. SRK was the biggest star of 1990s. Period.

  • @tiger-the real chuha
Indicine has included Kuch kuch hota in Sallua films……..sukr kar, barna see where lallu would be

  • @Prashant abhisekh
dude, u still living in dillema
These admins have included KKHH as Salmans movie
@Indicine, with this sense why not Anupam kher or Johny lever too??:p:D

  • @abhay malhotra

No Bhai is pretending that Bhai takes risk unlike some chameleons. Hence, your blabbering makes no sense.

You are free to praise Aamir khan. We have no problem with that. But WTH you always blabber nonsenses on Bhai rather than praising Aamir khan??? In reply we don’t bash Aamir that doesn’t mean that we are Alok nath kind of people. Bahut bardasht karr liya hai….Abb aur nahi. You better stop your nonsenses. Otherwise you will have to leave Indicine. That’s my promise.

  • @mekanik:

No problem to accept that galaxy king was ahead of Bhai in last decade. But in ,90’s & this decade Megastar Bhai is miles ahead of him. Hence, overall Megastar Bhai>>>>>>>>>>kingkong.

  • #sultan gem
u said that if salman sir will give one flop and his carrier…is over …prem ratan dhan pao ..super hit like hny ..but after prdp salman sir gave ALLTIME BLOCKBUSTER with b grade ..director ali sir …but what about srk sir gave ..hit / avg with top director …rohit shetty …now recently fan ..!
Your logic only belongs to srk sir not salman sir
Now …salman sir unstoppable …bull ..!! Nobody stop him…!! Salman sir serious ki or chal pade h…ab na piche mudte ..!!

  • @buddha ki ullu

Accepted HAHK worked mainly because of it’s WOM. So what??? Did DDLJ, KKHH, Raja Hindustani etc bcm successful due to srk & Aamir’s stardom??? And who stopped your floppy to work in movies having positive WOM during that period???

Similarly movies like Airlift worked only because of extremely positive WOM. But can we deny that it’s a Akki movie???

  • @Indicine
now that u have include kkhh as salman’s movie, have u also included the 80s release Maine Pyaar Kiya too?
    Just asking

  • Actually srkians are the worst fanbase they disrespebt every other Actor . Insecure lungifans

  • @All loongiwalas

What is the relationship between getting two extra years (90 & 91) and hit ratio/success ratio/avg collections per movie??? Can you explain???

Bhai got two extra years at the beginning of the decade was a big disadvantage actually. As in second half of the decade business grow big time compared to 1st part of the decade. Eg- Aakhein bcm ATBB with only 10cr collections in 1990, but in 1999 movies like biwi no1, HDDCS etc are considered just hits with 25+cr collections.

  • @ navin, it seems you have very much knowledge about pluto.I think earlier u lived there and later shifted on earth. How much tubelight collected on pluto ? lol !!!

  • Srk and salman lead actor records 1990/ 1999

    Srk movie=27
    Salman=28

    Srk flop=12
    Salman=13

    Srk successful movie=15
    Salman successful movies=15

    Srk total movie collection=318.980
    Salman total movie collection=329.95

    Srk hit or better=9
    Salman hit or better=12

    Karan arjun decade

  • @sss : Don’t visit the site which is manipulating facts & publishing fake list (According to your retard logic). If you still visit then it means you are shameless, characterless, moral less, ethics less n most importantly you are soul less creature !!!!!!

  • @ NN : Check the Blockbuster ratio in the article you provided by me. SRK not even in top 3, at least Salman is 3rd (only in Hit Ratio and Return on Investment). I salute Salman for not faking the verdict of Jai Ho like Ra.One. Every one knows Ra.One was a flop going by its big budget !!!!!!!!!!!

  • @Prashant @ Resham : It was not specific to any SRK fans but majority of SRK fans who always called Salman as 2010 born star. If you do not believe Indicine then better dont visit and comment on the site. Dont be a chameleon !!!!!!!!!!!! Stick to one source and accept the reality !!!!!!!!!!

  • @Resham : It seems you are going through a lot of frustrations nowadays specially after reading this article. The tape context which you posted had already declared as fake by the authorities concerned including CBI and Mumbai police !!!!!! Now keep posting fake and imaginary stories it may help your queen reign back to top in pluto or Bakrapur !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Lol

  • @sss : It means you are accepting the following things by supporting BOI India:

    * HNY never crossed 38 crs (opening day) and PRDP hold the highest opening day collections.
    * HNY never crossed 200 crs – Life Time collections – 176 crs

    * CE did only 206 crs Life time and not 227 crs
    * Ra.one is Flopped movie and never recovered its budget.

Will you accept the same or show your chameleongiri by posting another nonsensical comment ?

  • This article rightly proves how SRK is a media made ‘King’. He worked hard and reached the peaks which is not questionable but the illusion he created as if he has been ruling from decades and years was just a myth and never a reality. It is a fitting reply to all those who called Salman Khan as 2010 born star. Thank you Indicine for bringing the reality.

    Too much fun !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @ Rustom Sunny Akkiholic at 5:24 pm : The kind of language you speak gives a fair idea of the kind of rough upbringing you have had to face. A trauma experienced in childhood also at times leads to such results. Even if I want to I can’t use that language. Can only sympathize with you.

I can understand your state of mind seeing Ajay’s name above Akshay here. But I think you are more upset because Saif’s name is altogether missing in that list. I know you are a big fan of his. It is Indicine’s fault and not mine to not include him.

You honestly do not deserve a response but will just respond you one time. My criteria was success or hit ratio and Akshay is at 4th in both the categories for the period 2000-2009. Following is the source below:

    http://www.indicine.com/movies/bollywood/most-successful-actors-2000-2009/

No further response to you from my side.
