Most successful Bollywood Actors: 2000 – 2009

This is a question that gets asked quite frequently in the weekly ‘Ask Indicine’ Question and Answer session. So to end the debate once and for all, we analyse the Top 6 most successful actors in the last decade.

Most number of films:

  • Akshay Kumar – 42 films
  • Ajay Devgn – 39 films
  • Salman Khan – 32 films
  • Shah Rukh Khan – 21 films
  • Hrithik Roshan – 14 films
  • Aamir Khan – 9 films

Total Net Collections for each actor between 2000 – 2009:

  • Akshay Kumar - 983 crore
  • Shah Rukh Khan - 678 crore
  • Aamir Khan - 585 crore
  • Salman Khan - 581 crore
  • Ajay Devgn - 557 crore
  • Hrithik Roshan - 481 crore

Average net box office collections per film between 2000 – 2009

  • Aamir Khan – 65 crore
  • Hrithik Roshan - 34.35 crore
  • Shah Rukh Khan - 32.29 crore
  • Akshay Kumar - 23.40 crore
  • Salman Khan - 18.15 crore
  • Ajay Devgn – 14.28 crore

Success Ratio i.e Above Average or better  (probably the most important, because it’s the percentage of films that recovered investment)

  • Aamir Khan – 78%
  • Shah Rukh Khan - 67%
  • Hrithik Roshan - 43%
  • Akshay Kumar - 36%
  • Salman Khan – 31%
  • Ajay Devgn - 13%

Hit Ratio i.e Hit or Better

  • Aamir Khan – 67%
  • Shah Rukh Khan – 57%
  • Hrithik Roshan - 43%
  • Akshay Kumar - 26%
  • Salman Khan – 19%
  • Ajay Devgn - 10%

In conclusion, when it comes to Top 3 actors of the previous decade, it’s between Aamir, SRK, Hrithik and Akshay.

Shah Rukh maintained a very high success and hit ratio throughout the decade, even though he has featured in more than twice the number of films as Aamir.

Aamir’s stature and box office total grew quite significantly towards the end of the decade because of films like Ghajini and 3 Idiots. He didn’t have a release for four years between Dil Chahta Hai (August 2001) and Mangal Pandey (August 2005).

Salman was inconsistent, many of his films were huge disasters. As a solo star, he didn’t have much to show apart from a few films like No Entry, Partner, Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya and Wanted.

Akshay enjoyed the best phase of his career in 2006 and 2007, when he delivered several back-to-back hit films. He tops the ‘total net collections’ for the decade. His average per film and success ratio isn’t too bad either.

Hrithik Roshan went through a career low after a stellar start to his career, but made a comeback and remained consistent after Koi Mil Gaya.

Ajay Devgn was poor throughout. Both his success and hit ratio were well below 15%. His hits were Bhoot, Masti, Golmaal and Golmaal Returns.

  • But SALMAN KHAN has ruled the Bollywood since 1989
He was the top actor in 90s and now he is way ahead of his contemporaries
2000-2009 was only patchy period in SALMAN KHAN’s career & srkians will be happy to analyze this decade only.
90s & current decade doesn’t matter for them at all.

  • Good article…

Ajay is at the last position in everything except number of films. Lol. Some people can’t call him superstar. 4 hits out of 39 films.. two of them were directed by Rohit Shetty.. other two were not his films.. one belonged to Urmila other to Masti trio.

I think decade belonged to SRK, then Hrithik and after that Akshay. SRK has given highest grosser of all time, highest grosser of the year and maintained high success ratio.. same with Hrithik.

Aamir very few films.. Salman only had few films.. Akshay not consistent, only two or three years.

  • Shah Rukh maintained a very high success and hit ratio throughout the decade, even though he has featured in more than twice the number of films as Fan less Aamir….
    Only king khan Rules bollywood…

  • Lol and some akki fans think akshay is bigger star than Hrithik…a tight slap from indicine to all akki fans

  • The calculation is perfect n although being a Salman fan, I completely agree with this analysis.

    @Indicine
By the opening statement, it seems you guys are quite frustrated with this particular question. I hope this gives a closure to everyone and they do not ask you this question again :-)

  • So Hrithik was in top 3!!
But during the time of Kaho na.. Pyaar hai and Krrish/Dhoom 2, the Craze was too high, even bigger than SRK, Aamir case! But these two actors are more consistent!

  • Definitely it were akshay, srk n hritik i mean aamir cant be counted in it as his biggest hits weee in post multiplex era n akshay n srk had releases on a regular basis b it pre or post mplx era…n eve hritik had few releases so the last decade def belongs to akshay n srk….and akshay released 42 movies in 10 yrs means he released more than 4 movies a yr that tym as well n still continues to this man deserves a lot more credit from classes as masses r always there for him i still think he n salman r the biggest mass superstars n when u talk about last decade did i call salman a superstar…no…lolllzzz

  • @indicine:
You didn’t mention “no of Blockbusters” “Highest grossers of year” “All time highest grossing films” . please do mention them.
    It’s looking incomplete now!

  • It has to be SRK at no.1 followed by Akshay/Hrithik.

Hrithik was ahead of Akki from 2000-2006.

And Akki was ahead from 2007-2010.Akki had a pretty good 2006 too,Phir hera pheri superhit,Bhagam Bhag Hit.
Also Akki has done 3 times the no. of films HR has done in this period,so comparing the total collections and success ratio won’t be fair.

Ajay as I have always maintained was never a superstar, one big opening to Singham Returns and his fans consider him ahead of Akki, lol

  • In 38 films..Aamir has given 22+ successful films..his success ratio best ever..none has given more bigger hits than him

2 Biggest Grossers of the decade

    5 ATBB

    6 HGOTY..

4 ATBB in last 5 releases

    What a record

  • Honestly Ajay is not a superstar… Ajay have some box office , that only With the help of Rohith shetty.. He is nothing without Rohith shetty…
Shivay result will Tell the real story of Ajay..

  • @indicine plz publish another article on analysing box office performance of top actors from 2010-2015.
If u can’t publish then please reply . I’m waiting.

  • Last 5 films of Aamir in India – 1038cr

    Last 5 AK in OS – 122m$

    Worldwide – 2200cr

None even close to him except salman in domestic

  • 1. Mohabatein= Biggest grosser of 2000 worldwide
    2. K3g: second biggest
    3. Devdas2002 = Biggest grosser
    4. Kal ho naa ho: Classic, biggest grosser worldwide, 2nd in India
    5. VeerZaara 2004: Biggest grosser
    6. Paheli2005: Oscar nominated
    7. Don: Crunched Lallu and Akki’s Jaaneman and despite clash earned just a little less than Aamir’s solo Fanna
    8. OSO(2007)bIGGEST GROSSER, cdi CRUNCHED LALLU’S Marigold earning 100 times more
    9. RNBDJ(2008): 2nd biggest hit, If the 26/11 attack wouldnt have happened and was promoted properly, it would have earned 100cr+
    ONLY KING KHAN RULES

  • But one can’t take credit away from Aamir too,he has given us Lagaan,RDB,TZP,3 Idiots,DCH kind of cult films.

  • So Ajay’s 39 films have collected 28 crore less than Aamir’s 7 films!! Eye opener.. Ajay comes with disaster guarantee.

    How can Shivaay beat ADHM??

  • Interestingly,SRK is not at the top of any of those lists but still,I would rate him at the top,he was pretty consistent throughout the decade and did substantial no. of films too.

  • Aamir khan is ace and best megastar ever followed by SRK and Akki

But where is Ranbir Kapoor in this list?

    Sawariya -flop
    Bachana Ae haseeno -hit
    Wake up sid-hit
    Rajneeti -blockbuster
    Rocket sing-flop
    Ajab prem ki gazab kahani-blockbuster
    Include him too

  • In terms of quality with quantity, Aamir has to be at the top, be it any decade!
Aamir’s average and Success Ratio is almost double to that of the 2nd best.
    Wow!
And, he has given us cult classics that will be remembered for a 100 years such as 3 Idiots, Dil Chahta Hai, Rang De Basanti, Lagaan, Taare Zameen Par. Even Mangal Pandey, Fanaa and Ghajini were great too!
Not a single bad film in 10 years.
    That’s Aamir for you.
Dangal shall be another one of those cult classics going down in history!

  • Akshay roxx with nearly 1000 crore business.
amir nd hrithik were choosy in this phase so more credit should go to Akshay for doing more movies And giving many successes.

For me clearly SRK & AKSHAY WERE Best superstar in 2000s…!
