Most successful Bollywood actors 1990 – 1999

We finally have the analysis of the most successful actors between 1990 – 1999. It’s a decade that marked the rise of the three Khans, while Ajay Devgn and Akshay Kumar were growing their fanbase and delivering quite a few hits in between.

Salman Khan leads in every category – highest net collections, success ratio, hit ratio and the best average per film. He also has the highest grosser and the most watched film of the 90s in Sooraj Barjatya’s Hum Aapke Hain Kaun.

Salman and Shah Rukh are the only two actors to average more than 10 crore plus per film.

Most number of films:

  • Akshay Kumar – 42 films
  • Ajay Devgn –  33 films
  • Salman Khan – 29 films
  • Shah Rukh Khan –  28 films
  • Aamir Khan – 23 films

Total Net Collections for each actor between 1990 - 1999:

  • Salman Khan – 375 crore
  • Shah Rukh Khan – 327 crore
  • Ajay Devgn –  221 crore
  • Akshay Kumar - 196 crore
  • Aamir Khan –  186 crore

Average net box office collections per film between 1990 - 1999

  • Salman Khan –  12.9 crore
  • Shah Rukh Khan –  11.7 crore
  • Aamir Khan –  8.1 crore
  • Ajay Devgn - 6.7 crore
  • Akshay Kumar – 4.7 crore

  • Shah Rukh Khan – 39%
  • Ajay Devgn –  36%
  • Aamir Khan – 35%
  • Akshay Kumar - 24%

Hit Ratio i.e Hit or Better

  • Salman Khan – 45%
  • Shah Rukh Khan – 32%
  • Aamir Khan – 22%
  • Ajay Devgn – 18%
  • Akshay Kumar - 10%

Note: We haven’t included two prolific actors – Sunny Deol and Govinda – in the list. Deol was a superstar, even though he wasn’t very consistent at the box office. He had quite a few hugely successful films like Border, Darr, Zindi and Ghatak, just to name a few. Govinda delivered several hits with David Dhawan and was one of the most popular and successful actors of the 90s. We are currently in the process of retrieving data from old film magazines. We are also working with a well-known trade analyst to rectify the 90s data, which isn’t as accurate as we’d want it to be at the moment.

  • Never see this before, 1st time Producer figure is less than Trade figure:

    SULTAN
    Producer Fig: 296.82cr
    Trade Fig: 297.2cr

40 Lakhs less than Trade figure amazing…

Bus Ek boundary chahiye…manne lage hai ho jayega, kya kewe hai angreji mein? NEVER LOSE HOPE!

  • @ANK : Awesome analysis buddy! You just nailed it.

It’s really a bliss to see that whichever star leads the decade, the comparison is always being made with SRK.
No doubt, in first half of 90s, SRK was not in the competition as he made his debut itself in 1992 (much later than his contemporaries like Salman and Amir) and since he was an outsider (without any paternal backing), he was not privileged to ‘reject’ multiple scripts at a time and thus, he accepted almost all the scripts (either good or bad) which came under his way (SRK himself accepted in one of his interviews that his choice of movies was pathetic in his initial days).
Barring Darr and Bazigar (commercially successful) and KHKN (critically acclaimed) , he didn’t have much on his name in the first half of 90s and if we see, the maximum number of his flops came from the aforementioned first half.

His reign begun in the second half of 90s and with back-to-back BBs like KA, DDLJ, KKHH and DTPH soon he was being compared with the might of Govinda, Sunny Paaji etc. Later, he superseded all of them only to gain the title of “Baadhsah”.

Next, in the beginning of 00s, when the 90s superstars were fading away and Hrithik made a grand entry with KNPH , suddenly all trade analysts and critics saw his entry as a threat to the stardom of SRK saying SRK’s days are over and now the industry has got a new ‘King’.

Again, in the mid of 00s, when Amit ji was bailed out with KBC and other successful movies (e.g. Black, Baghban etc) , media and other critics took no time to project that event as a face off of “Baadshah VS Shehanshah”.

And lastly, no need to reiterate the chronology of last 2-3 years of 00s and first half of 21s, as we all saw despite of going through his worst phase (as many claim) , SRK’s consistency is far better than those who are reigning this decade. Moreover, fans of those so called ‘rulers’ of this decade still compare their star with SRK, that clearly shows their biggest insecurity is SRK, his consistency and his stardom in last 2 decades or so.

Apparently It’s really an honor for me to be the FAN of a superstar who is synonym for consistency and who never saw a phase where he was completely ruled out by the audience, critics and trade analysts.
Loads of love and respect !!!!!!

  • collectionwise both Salman and SRK almost same but Indicine has included KKHH as Salman starrer too…

hope they include OSO as Salman khan film too..as salman was there in the film :)

  • Now bhaitards learn to give logic first
    1. Salman had two extra years, 1990 and 1991
    2. Kuch Kuch hota hai is not Salmans movie, but has been included here
AND LETS HAVE A YEARWISE COMPARISON
    1. 1992: Srk was ahead with deewana, raju bangaya gentleman
1993-Srk was ahead in Darr, Baazigar
    1994-Salman with hahk
    1995-Srk with ddlj
    1996-Salman with jeet
    1997-Srk with dtph and border
    1998-Srk with KKHH
    1999-Salman all the way
    Record openers day1 in 90s
    Salman
    1. Karan arjun-5 months
    2. Biwi no. 1- 5 months
    Srk
    1, Karan arjun
    2. Trimurti-2 years
    3. Koyla-4 months around
In overseas market Srk led with all stamps and authority

  • SRK and salman are very close in 90s
Salman 329crores in 28 films (excluding KKHH)
    SRK 327 crores in 28 films….

SRK is very very close in every facts..
but if you wanna see the huge difference check out 20s and see d difference SRK and Salman be it success ratio or hit ratio ;)

  • @salman fans as we all know that srk was a comman man a outsider and he came very late in 90’s by his hardwork starting from DD National’s serial and other name like salman ,ajay, amir were well known for industry bcoz of bollywood background so they easily got chance in whatever they want to do like salman got a role in dharmendra’s movie biwi ho toh aisi now come on the point why people called srk king of bollywood so i want to tell you it’s not all about collection. impact is also necessary like a solid performance for example

as we all know that srk deleverd out standing performance too in 90’s he over shadow well established superstar sunny deol in darr his performance in debut bazigar was also awesome he did lots of performance orient movie that time that why today he standing on top with 7 most numbers of award which was missing in case of Salman

people have to understand salman’s hahk earn huge but in this movie salman LIke a supporting cast if you compare hahk with terenaam you found salman did great in tere naam as a raadhey which was more impact ful same like kangana,’s krish earn 245cr but it not work for her it’s queen with 45cr make her queen of Bollywood same we all know langada tayagi of omkara instead of race character so stardom king blah blah not came with collection only you have to allrounder you have to impactfull

    according to indicine

    in 90’s -1999

    success ratio 1)salman 2)srk 3)ajay
hit ratio 1) salman 2) srk 3) Ajay

    in 2000’s-2009

    success ratio 1)amir 2)srk 3)hrithik
    hit ratio 1) amir 3)srk 3)hrithik

note-it’s consider bad phase of salman amir missing completely in decade around 4 yr if we exclude his 3-ideot so whole scenario became changed so it’s not good to say it’s aamir dominated decade

    in 2010-2015

    success ratio-1)srk 2)varun 3)Salman
    hit ratio-1)srk 2)varun 3)salman

note-it is consider the worst phase of srk it’s also consider of decade of south remake success even akki rowady Ajay singham did huge along with salman’s half dozen south remake

so from above analysis you found srk in every decade including with highest success and hit ratio in his worst phase

and salman was completely missing in his bad phase 1990-1999 not even in top 5

if we included overseas performance and award in these comparison so hater have to leave earth and will go to pluto
i think now you all got it why people call him king

  • This is Bollywood yahan sab uthta surajko Salam karte hain and u know why each ,evry1 salutes salman he is in evry directors wish list, evry heroine wants a pc of him, evry child wants 2 be like him not only bcs the actor he is even for the better humanbng he is. He is nxt 2 god.

  • @ Dev Anand_The Fake: Main Tumhara Hoon Lol.Is Naame Ki Koi Movie Aamir Ki Nai He.
Me Namak Haram Hon Starring:Anand_The Original.Ye Movie Zarur He.

  • Hmm Salman was a megastar then, now and beyond, no-one can doubt on that
But SRK has been way consistent than Salman in 90s.More so as Kuch Kuch Hota hai is not Salmans film and SRK made debut two years later only
IN DOMESTIC BOX OFFICE AND OVERSEAS BOX OFFICE
The year 1992: SRK’s Deewana was the 2nd biggest hit of the year after Anil Kapoor’s Beta and ahead of all Salman Khan;s movies that year. All Salmans movies flopped at the box office.

The year 1993: SRK altered the rule of game arising as the most promising newcomer. With Darr and Baazigar he was then just behind seniors like Sanjay Dutt and Govinda. Clearly, SRK won Salman this year too

The year 1994: Salman gave the biggest hit of all time Hum Aapke Hai kaun. Salman was the clear winner, however SRK was consistent with the classic Kabhie Haan Kabhie Naa

The year 1995: King Khan altered the rule of games capturing the top two spots in DDLJ and Karan Arjun(which costarred Salman Khan). In overseas market, the phenomena called SRK begun.

The year 1996: Nightmare for SRK as all his four films underperformed. Salman’s Jeet was the 2nd bigghest hit after Raja Hindustani. Saman’s Khamosi was the biggest hit overseas. Salman was a clear winner

The year 1997: Though Boarder was the biggest hit domestically, in Khan war, it was SRK all the way with three hits in : Dil To Pagal Hai(blockbuster, 2crore+ footfalls) and Pardesh(first film to do well in America) and Yes Boss(an above average grosser)

The year 1998: SRK was at the top with Kuch Kuch Hota hai where Salman had a cameo. SRK’s Dil Se flopped, despite being a classic, just like Salman,s Love, Andaaz apna apna and Khamosi had. Salman had four success in Pyar kiya to darna kya, Bandhan, Jab Pyar Kisise Hota hai. Srk was however ahead

The year 1999: Salman captured all the three top spots with HSSH, Biwi no. 1 and HDDS.

SRK had three all time day1 opener vitz Kaaran Arju, Trimurti and Koyla. Salman had KA and Biwi no. 1

  • In 1990’s akshay Kumar worked with b grade filmmakers barring few movies wid known makers which were hit.he himself said no big banner were ready to worked with him as he was from outside. People were ignoring him so u cant compare dem wid actors whose almost all hits movies were of big banners. They do better marketing of der films and akshay Kumar he use to ve his release 2 week after one release coz of the financial instability of producers.so it’s unfair oh his side to give such comparisons stil he gave atlst 10 hits and dat show his fanfollowing. He was immensely popular among masses. Mohra was d biggest opener of 1994 by distance.. His most films used to open better den khans in 1990 bt his movie didn’t sustained like dem.
U ve to give all dees information too indicine.
I ve 1 magazine of 90’s where Amitabh Bachchan and Rishi kapoor talked about akshay Kumar saying dat he’s one of the most popular star along with srk and so dey can’t think of competing with dem at dat moment.
U r biased indicine lwys gives Aadha adhura information.

    1. Maine Pyar Kiya – 15 crore
    2. HAHK – 70 crores
    3. KKHH ( was the second male lead actor ) – 45 crores
    4. Dabangg – 153 crore
    5. Ek Tha Tiger – 199 crore
    6. Kick – 233 crore
    7. Bajrangi Bhaijaan – 321 crore
    8. Sultan – 300 crore
( When Kick and Ek Tha Tiger released, Indicine give ATBB verdict but after one year they changed the verdict to just Blockbuster because they can’t see Salman having more ATBB than Aamir tingu who has 5 ATBB )

  • Salman was is and will remain the most loved superstar of bollywood, srk ruled to a same extent due to success of romantic genre ,which he played very extremely well ,but in other department he fails up to live the expectation unlyk amir who is best in every department.he does very less commercial movies and less media coverage thats why people think so but actually he is a biggest star of the country ever seen

  • in 90s Ajay was clearly in top 3. there is no doubt about it. His hairstyle, walling style and in every film he will have a flying stunt these three were so popular among masses. while salman, srk and amir was also very popular among masses. But believe me when I say it akki was never a big star in 90s even though he made action films more than them but he never was popular among masses in 90s. it is after 2000 he gained popularity among masses that too cause of comedy films where he reinvented himself and gained popularity among masses. Otherwise nobody used to care about home before. I am from a small town u can say mass friendly town so I know about 90s.

  • and look at this babaji first he said that at that time there was no stardom only content used to matters now he is barking about mohra & khiladiyon ke khiladi’s opening collection but fact is action films used to open bigger at that time but it is romantic films which used to sustain more cause of family audience and hence they became bigger grosser.

  • Thank u indicine 4 D’s
This is what SALMAN fans HV bn saying all along but few kids who know nothing blabber that SK career started after 2010…

  • @zo I agree with you honestly out of these 5 actors Ajay was most popular among masses in 90s I am from mass area so I know and Amir and salman was also popular among masses. but Ajay was more popular while salman was clearly favorite of family audience. and out of raja Hindustani, him aap ke hai kaun and ddlj it was raja Hindustani which was the most popular among masses even mann also. so in masses it was Ajay followed by Amir then salman then srk and then akshay in that order. salman and srk were more popular among female audience and salman was most popular among family audience. while akki was last in both male and female fan following. Ajay’s acting, hairstyle, walking style and his flying stunt was a rage among masses in 90s. Akki only became popular from 2000 onwards among masses doing comedy films so mass fan following’s main reason comedy films not action action which was said. from 2000 onwards even though salman was going through his bad phase but he became style icon at that time in masses and it was Teri naam which was the turning point of salman’s career not wanted. Tere naam even though was not big hit but it increased salman’s fan following among masses and the songs and hairstyle was a rage. he is just needed to mass friendly movie after that which he didn’t do till wanted then also he suffered set back doing veer,London dreams and me aur Mrs khanna then he did Dabang then the rest is history. he realized his strength. And srk became family favorite from 2000 onwards. Akki became on of the favorite of masses BT doing comedy films. Amir became favorite of classes. Even though lost popularity of 90s doing off beat films like halls bol, apaharan, company, lagend of bhagat Singh bit still he is one of the favorite among masses and was going through a low phase from 2000-2009 and bounced back in 2010.

  • It will be good if you post something like this between 2000-2010 & 1999-2010. Salman will behind akshay in that lists & srk will be on top.

  • Just show power of akshay 2010 – 2016 in total net collection. I know average ll b less hit ratio ll b less but so many people went n saw d movies. Or may b 2000 to 2009 he ll b top. Akki rules too. He is not scared to release on normal date. Not scared to put stardom 3/4 times in a year. Not even scared of clashes. Hit ya flop. East or West akshay remains d best.

  • @salman fans as we all know that srk was a comman man aoutsider and he came very late in 90’s by his hardwork starting from DD National’s serial and other name like salman ,ajay, amir were well known for industry bcoz of bollywood background so they easily got chance in whatever they want to do like salman got a role in dharmendra’s movie biwi ho toh aisi

  • In fact SRK ruled only from 2001 to 2004. Not because he did something substantial in domestic market. He did extremely well with Kabhi Khushi Khabhi Gham .That was the game changer. Though Salman never gave flops his film barring Mujse Shaadi Karoge didn’t mint 30 cr plus which SRK was delivering. Aamir hadca setback in Mangal Pandey. And both Salman and Aamir were accessible to media which SRK used wisely. But even in his best phase SRK couldn’t set any milestones. To put it simple he crossed HAHK collection maybe in 2007.
