Shivaay Trailer Review and Trade Response

The trailer of Ajay Devgn’s upcoming film ‘Shivaay’ was unveiled in Indore yesterday and the response has been hugely positive.  Prior to the release of the trailer, there were quite a few question marks over the film - will Ajay succeed in directing a film that not only has high-production values, but also looks like a big event film? Will the film attract both the urban audience and the masses – which is important since the budget of the film is high? Will the trailer make an impact – trailers of films like Mohenjo Daro in the recent past – have shown how important a trailer is to creating the right amount of buzz, more so when two films (in this case, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil) are scheduled to release on the same day.

Clash doesn’t matter: Ajay Devgn

Ajay Devgn is all set to unveil the theatrical trailer of his ambitious directorial venture ‘Shivaay’. But after a major fall-out with Eros (who have backed out of the film) and crores at stake, ‘Shivaay’ will be up against Karan Johar’s 6th film as director ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’ – which releases on the same day during the festive weekend of Diwali.

Dishoom Total Box Office Collections and Business Economics

Dishoom is sustaining well at the box office, as the film has collected 2.5 crore on its 8th day (official figures not released). 2nd Friday business was always going to be crucial, because a big drop would’ve meant a total of around 60-62 crore (which was our LBO prediction). But a strong hold has ensured that the film will cross the Rs 65 crore mark by the end of its run. If the film shows good growth on Saturday and Sunday, it could amass Rs 70 crore at the domestic box office - which will be a very good total.

Dishoom Day 4 (Monday) Box Office Collections

Dishoom has performed fairly well on its first weekday at the box office. The drop from Friday to Monday is 56%, which is slightly on the higher side, but multiplex ticket prices are slashed by around 30% from the weekend rates. The film continued to be affected by rain in several parts of the country, so there is hope that the audience who weren’t able to watch the film in the first weekend, might return to catch it this coming weekend.

Most successful Bollywood actors 1990 – 1999

We finally have the analysis of the most successful actors between 1990 – 1999. It’s a decade that marked the rise of the three Khans, while Ajay Devgn and Akshay Kumar were growing their fanbase and delivering quite a few hits in between. Salman Khan leads in every category – highest net collections, success ratio, hit ratio and the best average per film. He also has the highest grosser and the most watched film of the 90s in Sooraj Barjatya’s Hum Aapke Hain Kaun.

Top 10 Highest First Weekend Collections of 2016: Dishoom at No 6

Dishoom has recorded the 6th highest first weekend collections of 2016, ahead of films like Udta Punjab, Kapoor and Sons, Ki and Ka. The Varun Dhawan – John Abraham – Jacqueline Fernandez starrer was behind Housefull 3, FAN, Airlift and Baaghi. Dishoom would have probably crossed the 40 crore mark and made it to Top 5, if business was not affected by rains in most parts of the country throughout the weekend. The collections of Sultan is in a different league altogether and incomparable with any other film released this year.

Dishoom First Weekend Box Office Collections

Dishoom was excellent in its first weekend at the domestic box office. The opening of the film was above pre-release expectations, the growth on Saturday was limited, but the film managed to record excellent collections on Sunday – taking the net box office collections to Rs 37.32 crore in 3 days.

Dishoom Day 2 (Saturday) Box Office Collections

Dishoom has failed to show big growth on Saturday at the box office, which isn’t a very positive sign because the film was targeted mainly at the multiplex audience and the trend on Saturday usually is a sign of where the film is heading. Even though the opening on Friday was good, the occupancy at multiplexes wasn’t very high and a solid 20-25% growth was expected on Saturday. Unfortunately, that hasn’t come.

AskIndicine: Live QnA at 4PM

Q. What are the chances of Raees to have a solo release now? A. It has to move to a different date to get a solo release. There will be a major shuffle in 2017 release dates in the next couple of months. Q. What is verdict of Sultan & will it touch 300 cr mark?any idea about footfalls? A. All Time Blockbuster. Footfalls will be 3 crore plus. Q. The south filmmakers are not at all concerned about the festival factor. Recent films like Kabali and Sardar Gabbar Singh (that feature megastars like Rajinikanth and Pawan Kalyan) and other big films like 24, Sarrainodu, Bramhotsavam and Theri that feature superstars had released on normal working day. Even Robot 2 makers are in no hurry to lock Diwali 2017? Why so? A. South Industry works differently. The release dates are announced late and their movies move freely. For example, Baahubali last year was delayed quite a few times. Now there are reports that Baahubali: The Conclusion might move too. Kabali was postponed quite a few times, before it eventually released last week. Even in our industry, the trend of blocking dates well in advance is new. It’s not necessarily a good thing, because the obsession with holiday weeks is leading to more clashes. For films starring established stars, it’s better to get a solo release during a normal week than a clash during a festive / other holiday weekends. It’s the same in the south, big stars or big films will always have an audience. It’s better to get the content / film right, instead of getting obsessed with big dates and then ego getting the better of actors / filmmakers. Q. What are upcoming films of Sooraj Pancholi ? A. He’ll be doing a Remo D’Souza directed film where he’s been cast opposite Ajay Devgn. He’s also said to be in talks with Excel Entertainment for a film directed by Pierre Timmins (Assistant director on films like I Hate Luv Storys and Dostana). Q. When you say that a particular movie is being released on 3000-4000 screens (assume). What does that actually mean? Does it mean 3000-4000 odd theaters / multiplexes? A. A lot of people think ‘No of screens’ and ‘No of theatres’ is the same. That’s not true. For example Sultan released on 4300 screens, but the theatre count was approximately 2700 theatres in Week 1. Q. Salman got Kabir Khan (Bajrangi, Tubelight), Aamir got Hirani (3 Idiots , PK). Don’t you think SRK should also have a director who can give him Commercial + Content universal film to bring back his Old Charisma ? A. Shah Rukh was the first choice for 3 Idiots, but he let go of the film. So it’s not about big directors not wanting to work with him, but the choice of films that has let him down. Also, at this stage in his career, he can’t be calling directors to work with them. Having said that, Imtiaz Ali and Aanand L Rai are big directors, who can make universally appealing films. Q. Can Sultan cross 300 crore by fifth week? A. Yes, the film will cross the 300 crore mark next week. It’ll cross the 297 crore mark today and should complete its fourth week with net box office collections of 298-299 crore in India. Fifth week, 300 crore mark should be surpassed. Q. Can Rustom open bigger than Mohenjo Daro if buzz increases more in coming 2 weeks? A. Yes, it’s a real possibility now. Rustom could inch over and record better Day 1 collections than Mohenjo Daro. Final prediction on August 11. Stay tuned. Q. What’s the update on Thug? Seems like a big budget mainstream film from YRF. Reports of Hritik walking out and Aamir stepping in are doing the rounds. A. Let’s wait for the official announcement on this. They haven’t been able to convince Hrithik about the script and there have been date hassles too, because Hrithik will be busy with both Mohenjo Daro and Kaabil. Thug has been getting delayed. Q. Can you please tell me which are the top 10 movies with highest footfalls in the history of indian cinema..?? A. Movies with the highest footfalls would all be from the 70s and 80s. Sholay is the most watched film of all time and the footfalls would be more than 3 times that of Hum Aapke Hain Kaun (which is by far the most watched film from 90s onwards). Q. What is the final lifetime collection & verdict of Udta Punjab can its business considered good after looking aspects like dark adult movie having niche audience and also piracy and how much boost it will give to shahid kapoor career? A. 60.5 crore finish for Udta Punjab. It’s an Above Average / Semi Hit grosser. Q. Can you tell tentative Screen Count of Mohenjo Daro & Rustom? A. Mohenjo Daro will get about 20% more screens than Rustom, but the key will be the occupancy levels on Friday and over the course of the weekend. It’s the word-of-mouth that’ll be the key and not the screen count – because when you enter a clash, it’s a foregone conclusion that your film won’t get a wide release or massive number of shows at multiplexes. That ends our QnA for today. We are still facing some minor server issues, so this page will be updated with a few more answers by tomorrow evening. Do check back. Thank you for joining us.

Kala Chashma is unstoppable, strategy to release song first works

Baar Baar Dekho song ‘Kala Chashma’ is proving to be unstoppable on the internet, as the song has garnered more than 18 million views in 5 days after its release on Youtube. The strategy to release the song before the theatrical trailer has worked big time, because ‘Kala Chashma’ is pretty much all over the internet. The song has been trending on Youtube in countries like Australia, Pakistan, New Zealand and UAE.

Dishoom Box Office Collections in UAE

Dishoom has collected 900,000 dirhams (Rs 1.64 crore) on Thursday in UAE, which is the highest ever opening day collections in the Gulf for a film starring Varun Dhawan in the lead. The Rohit Dhawan directed film is Varun’s first that has crossed the Rs 1 crore mark in UAE and his all-time second best, only behind Shah Rukh Khan’s Dilwale which was a much bigger film featuring a established superstar.

Dishoom Box Office Prediction

Sajid Nadiadwala’s Dishoom is the second biggest release of the month and the film releases at a time when the 3-week old ‘Sultan’ is nearing the end of its run. The Rohit Dhawan directed film will be the 7th film of Varun Dhawan’s career and the success of the film will be very important for him as well as his brother. In an industry where the success ratio is less than 5%, every film featuring Varun in the lead has been successful at the box offie.

Aamir vs Salman: Can Dangal beat Sultan?

The last highest grosser of the year (HGOTY) that did not feature Salman Khan or Aamir Khan in the lead, was Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Om Shanti Om’ back in 2007. In other words, for the last 8 consecutive years, Aamir or Salman have topped four years each – Ghajini (2008), 3 Idiots (2009), Dabangg (2010), Bodyguard (2011), Ek Tha Tiger (2012), Dhoom 3 (2013), PK (2014) and Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015)!

Sultan drops, but still better than new releases

Business of Sultan has seen a bigger drop as compared to its 2nd Friday, but the film is still the first choice for the Hindi audience. The new release of the week – Irrfan Khan’s Madaari – was promoted quite aggressively and the campaign was innovative too. But the result is quite poor, as the film has collected less than 2 crore on Day 1.

Kabali becomes the most watched film on Day 1

Kabali has become the most watched film on the first day of its release, as trade sources say more than 50 lakh people watched the film on Friday – about 35-40% of those were from Tamilnadu itself, which is unbelievably huge. The footfalls are higher than the opening day of pan-India films like Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, Sultan and Dhoom 3.

Sultan Box Office Collections: Inching closer to our LBO prediction

Sultan continued to record very high collections in its 2nd week at the box office. The 16th day collection of the film is still at the same level as the 1st Monday (4th day) collection of a successful film like ‘Ki and Ka’ and its 16th day would still find a place in the Top 20 opening day collections of 2016.

Rajnikanth: The ultimate superstar

The craze for Salman Khan has reached insane levels in the Hindi Film Industry, but even that pales in comparison to the kind of insanity and sheer craze that only a Rajnikanth film can generate. Check out these examples:
