Recently, when Akshay Kumar was questioned about the Khan monopoly during the festive weekends of the year, he said “I am usually left with nothing (festive dates), Republic Day was open so I’m releasing Airlift”
But the problem for Akshay Kumar hasn’t really been the box office opening of his films. Almost all his films take a good start, but it’s the content that has been the problem. None of his films have sustained well enough to do well in the long run.
Surprisingly though, the Republic Day weekend has won Akshay tremendous critical acclaim, but box office success has eluded him so far. His last two films which released during the same weekend were Neeraj Pandey’s Special 26 and Baby. Both films were rated highly by the critics, but both films failed to cross the 100 crore mark.
Unlike Baby and Special 26, his latest release ‘Airlift’ has taken a better opening and early reports are pretty good too. But the big question, once again, is if the film can cross the 100 crore mark – which would make ‘Airlift’ the first big hit for Alshay Kumar since ‘Rowdy Rathore’.
‘Holiday’ did well at the box office, but the costs were on the higher side. If the word-of-mouth is good, ‘Airlift’ could benefit from 2-3 open weeks at the box office as almost all the upcoming releases are targeted at mass centres.

@Abir – Akshay > Ajay though he will be 5th. Top 4 according to me :
1. Salman – Invincible right now. His stardom currently is of the same levels of Amitji in late 70s and early 80s. Even his PRDP with all negative reviews does a roaring business
2. Hrithik – Wait for 6 months and it will be very clear. Not only will he affect Rustom but will cross 250. His Bang Bang had a clash with haider (highly critically acclaimed movie. Won all awards), still did 175+ business. Holiday was also Gandhi Jayanti. Traditionally not a big festival as Diwali or Eid
3/4. Srk/Aamir – If we include overseas, then yes has an edge over Aamir. But if strictly India starpower, Aamit has an edge. A dilwale total below 150 is low by Srk standards on a big holiday as Xmas. This is at a time when newbies like Varun are crossing 100, Kangana managed to pull of 150. Very poor trending. After the weekend, fell like a pack of cards. WW Srk is still way ahead as no one matches his pull in US, Canada, UK and Germany
5. Akshay – Tad above Ajay. If we remove Rohit from Ajay’s life, entire Golmal and Singham series are gone. They are till date biggest money spinners for him. Ajay is close 6th
Ranveer and Varun can break into top 5 if they start delivering 100 crores on a consistent basis and the stars most affected will be Akshay & Ajay. Ranbir currently is below Ranveer and Varun but one good movie can make a strong case for him. He has the talent – it’s rough patch. I think Rajkumar Hirani and Karan Johar to some extent will salvage their career. If Karan is directing it, he will make sure the movie crosses at least 100 crores.

Blockbuster back to back. Is Aamir not a record setter. Ajay did he not open inbetween 32 opening day. Does he not have 5 100 cr. what of Hritik his minimum movie is more than Akshay grossing films.his average movie touches 200 or almost. Srk lowest is above 100 cr. His semi hit average movie is way above akki highest. So what are you taking about. Is it a lie? So having problems with Ajay fan is your cup of tea. Am neither his fan am a Srk fan. Trend is brilliant. Evening onwards the occupancy have gone above 75% while some places are running 90%+. 13 crores on cards. Good for Akki – deserves it !
Also, good news for Akki fans that KKHM3 has been flat with no growth. Negative wom means Airlift will easily cruise above 110. That means a super-hit.
UAE-GCC opening has been phenomenal.
@Akki is Gobar – Talk about Airlift. The fact is it is trending so beautifully that it will cross 110 crores now. Let’s idolize our favorites but by no means should you degrade a good film. Airlift is a tribute – you might hate Akshay, that is fine but as a movie buff/Bollywood lover how can you not like a good movie ?
Akki has done some really bad films but why discuss past when Airlift is creating magic at box office. Let it do well as it is a good movie. Evening trends report 75%+ occupancy and some places are housefull

Is the Airlift positive WOM reaching those places or only multiplex will show growth over weekends ? Considering that the competition stayed flat through out, do you think more people will opt for Airlift….

What is so ideal about ‘150’ crores that it should be a benchmark. Why not raise the bar to 250 crores. Then there will be only 3 super stars. 2 actors. 1 director. lol

I am huge fan of Aamir and HR
but i must admit, Akki is the most daring superstar. Here is the reason why.
1. Puts his stardom on the line every 3 month. Where as others does it hardly once in an year.
2. Always work on controlled budget and ensures that distributor doesn’t loose money.
3. Gives his audience different kind of movies (atleast for the last 3 year). He makes massy Gabbar and classy airlift at the same time.
People who question his stardom needs to understand that he never gets best banners, best production houses, best release dates, best directors , best PR machinery etc.
After Airlift my adulation has grown manifold towards this superstar and amazing human being. I pledge “from now onwards i will watch all his movies in cinema hall”.
I urge all the Aamir and HR fans to do the same.

@romance King – Bang bang was heavily panned by critics, negative wom and a clash with Haider on Gandhi Jayanti, not a big festive release like Xmas or Eid or even Diwali. Still crossed 170 with everything against it.
Krrish 3 crossed 200. When did yjhd cross that ? BM was brilliant no doubt but then it was a masterpiece by SLB. A good movie always should do well. It is doing roaring business because of trending which any movie even with a superstar won’t show if people don’t like it. We know Dilwale, don’t we ? Oh yes less then 150 in India…A massy release on Xmas with 2 open weeks struggling to even cross 150… Btw bang bangs wom was even worse… And did dilwale not have Rohit too ?
