Veer Movie Review

To be honest, I didn’t really have great expectations from Veer. The promos weren’t too exciting, Anil Sharma’s last few films were strictly average, the cast wasn’t very appealing either and Zarine Khan looked plumpy (if that’s any reason). But about 30 minutes into the film, it turned out to be quite enjoyable, the first half infact was very enjoyable.

Before we dig in any deeper, the story first.  Veer is a revenge tale of the Pindhari’s against the Raja of Madhavgarh. The Raja (played by Jackie Shroff), a victim of the Divide and Rule strategy employed by the British, betrays the Pindari’s killing thousands of them. In return one brave Pindari, Prithvi Singh (played by Mithun Chakraborty) chops off the right hand of the Raja. Both swear revenge.

Years later, the son of Prithvi – Veer (Salman Khan) takes on the might of the British and the cruel Raja, who is unaware that his very own daughter Yashodhara (Zarine Khan) is in love with his greatest enemy.

What works in Veer

  • The love story works big time in the first half, right from the extremely sweet introductory scene of Zarine Khan, when she first sees Veer.. to those heart warming moments in UK. Anil Sharma to his credit has handled the romantic parts pretty well.
  • The first half keeps you hooked throughout and the film does get very interesting at interval point.
  • The action sequences, although not as many as those in Wanted, are extremely well choreographed. Should work big time with the single screen audience
  • What’s also important while watching a film like Veer, is a bit of patience. Don’t go in expecting a fast-paced action romantic film. Don’t expect any subtlety either, Veer has shades of Gadar – its loud (at times too loud) and raw. If the hero roaring like a lion, mouthing exaggerated dialogues, taking on 10 men at a time is your cup of tea, you will end up enjoying Veer. Otherwise, the romance works as a saving grace.
  • The chemistry between Salman Khan and Mithunda was nice to watch.
  • The music was fantastic. Its Sajid- Wajid’s best work in ages! LOVED Surili Akhiyon Wale.

Negatives

  • The problem with Veer is, when its good its very good. But when bad, its very bad! The film had enough potential to be far more effective and engaging, but the screenplay writer (Shaktimaan Talwar) and its executor (Anil Sharma) goof up the second half.
  • Sohail Khan’s character was unnecessary and Jackie Shroff’s more important negative character doesn’t work.
  • Why is a feel-good ending an absolute must for every Bollywood film? The impact would probably have been slightly more if not for the clichéd ending.
  • Veer has far too many songs, 3 in the first and 3 more in the second. The music is good, but the extended song and dance numbers just stretch the film. Preferably for better impact, a couple of songs should either be chopped off or shortened.

Performances

  • Salman Khan is slightly over the top in the initial reels (first 20 mins), but quickly gets his act right and delivers a good performance.
  • Zarine Khan looks gorgeous (as the princess) in the first half, its hard to take your eyes off her. Strangely in the second, the make up men don’t get her look right.
  • Mithunda is in form and delivers a knock out performance, which will be received with whistles from the single screen audience.
  • Sohail Khan is outright irritating. Just an extension of his funny acts from almost all his films.
  • Jackie Shroff looks out of shape, average performance.
  • The rest don’t get much scope.

Overall, Veer isn’t close to as bad as some of the reviews suggest. Its watchable and very enjoyable. At the box office, Veer should do well on single screens.

Rating: ★★★☆☆ Good.

  • Eros International and Vijay Galani’s VEER is by far the biggest epic Bollywood movie that audiences have witnessed on the silver screen – and has scored the second biggest opening in CI as per official reports.

Salman Khan “the hero of the masses” is back in full form with a film meant “for the masses”.

With VEER-Bollywood’s most ambitious project yet the audiences were in for a never seen before visual treat!

According to sources VEER – Salman Khan’s brainchild opened to packed houses which seem to remain that way right till Tuesday evening.

Reveals a respected trade analyst “Small screens like Gaiety, Galaxy, Chandan and the likes are already opening to packed houses across main cities approximately between 70 to 100 % and since this week will have as good as an extended weekend-theatres seem to remain packed till Republic Day”

What’s bigger news is that VEER has broken records of Salman Khan’s previous hit WANTED.

Adds the trade analyst “VEER has scored the second biggest opening day turn over ever in Bollywood for Central India. The business is the second best first day ever in the history of Hindi cinema- An approximate 27.33 lakhs”

VEER has it all – great stars, opulent and majestic sets, adrenaline pumping action scenes and Salman’s presence lifts the screen to a whole different level.

Reveals a source “The fact that Salman has penned the script himself has given his fans all the more reason to queue up to watch the film. VEER is definitely going to break records both for epic films and commercial films alike- establishing Salman Bollywood’s hottest Khan yet!”

Adds the source “Despite mixed reviews theatres are opening to packed houses, just goes to prove that critical scores don’t make a film a hit ? audiences do! And audiences are running to watch just 1 star – that is Salman Khan”

So here’s to a monumental hit and here’s to the magnum opus VEER !!!!

  • according to boxofficeindia.com:

Veer has done good business on day one with around 6.50 crore nett as per early estimates. The film has performed fantastically well in Bihar, CP Berar, CI and Rajasthan. Bihar seems to be a record first day while other circuits mentioned above are amongst the top three ever.

Delhi/UP has also done well thanks to humungous business in UP single screens. Multiplexes in UP have also performed well. Mumbai, East Punjab and Nizam have seen okay business while Mysore, Tamil Nadu and Kerala are poor.

The film has by far the biggest first day ever for a Salman Khan starrer eclipsing the 5 crore nett of Wanted and Partner. Veer has mixed reports so its hard to say what will happen over the next few days but a good extended weekend will give the film good chances to emerge a success

  • ADHIDEB thanks , for yuor kind information . ” VEER” will create history in Indain cinema .Critics are nothing but audiences are main critic of the film . So audiences given thumbs up for ” VEER” . Lets rock the world .

  • S Directed by Anil Sharma, who has blockbuster hit Gadar to his credit, there are more reasons than one that can turn Veer into a huge hit.

One of the strongest aspects associated to ‘VEER’ is that the movie will be released in Telugu on same day as its Hindi release. In the recent past, movies like ‘Magadheera’ and ‘Pazhassi Raja’ have ruled the Telugu box office. The films dealt with subjects similar to that of ‘VEER’.
    alman’s ‘VEER’ in Telugu

  • Salman’s ‘Veer’ in Telugu

While ‘VEER’ is an epic love story of a warrior, ‘Magadheera’ revolved around Kalabhaiarava – a warrior in Udaigarh and ‘Pazhassi Raja’ told the story of a prince from the royal dynasty of Kottayam who revolted against the British. Also, the recent Tamil hit ‘Aayirathil Oruvan’, is dubbed as ‘Yuganiki Okkadu’ in Telugu and is about the Chola dynasty.

  • The box office collections of these films are evidence to the fact that Telugu audience is hooked to films which are shot in grandiose and are based on historical characters, epics and larger than life characters. Interestingly, the Telugu promos of ‘VEER’ are already getting a good response, no wonder then that Salman got mobbed in Hyderabad’s mall at his recent visit.

With a huge Bollywood fan base and an equally big Telugu fan following, Salman Khan’s chances of making it big at the box office with ‘VEER’ look very strong

  • ‘Veer’ has box office potential

    Andhra Pradesh

    “Veer’ has box office potential

    Film: Veer

    Director: Anil Sharma

Cast: Salman Khan, Zarine Khan, Mithun Chakraborty, Jackie Shroff

Sharma’s film starts from 1875 and Pindharis are shown riding horses. The costumes cry for attention. Salman Khan plays the part to the best of his ability. He bravely believes in his story which has little in terms of originality, but plenty in terms of box office potential

  • By Taran Adarsh, January 23, 2010 – 08:12 IST

Salman Khan’s VEER opened exactly like WANTED. The film opened very well at single screens of North India specifically [Uttar Pradesh, C.P., C.I. and Rajasthan single screens were excellent], but the response at multiplexes was a contrast, in 30% to 40% range at several screens.

The two factors that went in favour of WANTED were [i] superb reviews, with most critics loving the film and [ii] the all-round entertainment that WANTED had to offer. In this case [VEER], the reviews have been outright negative and the public response ranges from good to average to terrible. Meaning, the word of mouth is very, very mixed. Also, the entertainment quotient is lower than WANTED.

VEER has to perform exceedingly well in its first two weeks to recover its huge investment. Let’s wait and watch if the business shows a big jump in the coming days and the big-budget film maintains its pace at the ticket window for two complete weeks.

  • @Nauman….You are geting seriously puthetic on this page.If you have given review stand by dat u keep on backing urself. My review is good??????Please show some professionalism. Now u r worried abt boxoffice collections n u r constantly fighting with the Sallu fans.8 carore who are u???? N even a blind person kows saturday sunday bsiness increases. You are worst wid predictions.

  • Mr. Nauman, u hav said dat u r pretty sure abt Veer being average with 53-55 crore. My question z how can a film with 44 crore budget be an average with 55 crore collection ? Shouldn’t it be a hit ? Nd dis z my challenge 2 u dat Veer will definitely cross 60 crore mark nd be a super hit. Lets c how good trade analyst u r. Another thing z if Veer with 55 crore z an average film den ur fav De Dana Dan z also an average or a flop film. Do u agree 2 dat ?

  • @Akhlaq Bahe …Your review is far better than rest of the critics. You said you will post audience reacton too.Review is gone so now tell about the common man????

  • Indicine, we wanna know da boxoffice update from u. Um really confused. I have heard its very close to 7 crore on the 1st day nd some r telling dat it z approximately 6.5 crore. • @nauman

REMEMBER THE PERSON WHO KNOWS EVERYTHING AND THE PERSON WHO KNOWS NOTHING FALLS IN THE SAME CATEGORIES THAT’S FOOLISH.

  • Arshan:
i dont know abt the budget of Jodha Akbar and its collections i know only one thing that movie was declared Super Hit.
and now talk abt Veer’s Budget which is 44 cr as Srijon said.
DDD ‘s budget was 30 cr and it got 50 cr movie was above avg and now if Veer’s budget is 44 cr and if it gets 55 cr then what do u think what will the verdict ???
according to indicine how u can find out final verdict for a movie
    read it..
    if net collections are
    less than budget …… Flop
just near to Budget …… Avarage
50 % above than budget ….. Above Avarage
75 % above than budget ….. Semi Hit
Double than Budget ……. Super Hit
    Tripple than Budget …… Blockbuster.

Kambakhht Ishq Budget was near to 60 cr and movie collected also 60 cr so it was Avg
De Dana Dan budget was 30 cr and it collected 50 cr so mobvie was Above Avarage
Wanted Budget was 30 cr and it collected near to 60 cr … Super Hit
Rabne Bana Di Jodi budget was 32 Cr movie collected near to 82-85 cr …. Blockbuster
so now if Veer’s budget is 44 cr than now u have to tell me how much it needs to declare a clean super hit

  • Amit, dnt blame Nauman as a reviewer. The standard of reviews I saw yesterday from Raja Sen, Taran Adarsh etc etc, Nauman z not an exception from dem. Rather he z better comparing to dem. Its his prediction nd verdict dat irked me. It seems dat Salman has 2 achieve double of other heroes achievements 2 get deir accolades. But u know wat ? Sallu Vai really doesnt care abt dese foul comments. Its da mass 4 which he cares. Nd da response 4 Veer proves dat da mass z behind Sallu Vai. Salman rocks………….

  • i dont know why u r not understanding me …
i said for hit status movie needs near to 80 cr and 1st day collections are not up to the standard for this kind of expensive movie.
i just predict according to 1st day collections
and Amit Singhania for a reviewer u should know abt movie not abt English
there are plenty translator around me like u who can translate it so dont need to worry abt my english..
and i am going to another site very soon. so ur wish will come true very soon.
Hina nice to see u again but why u r not online on msn ?
r u in ur home or office ?

  • ANIL sharma again creates GADAR at the box office with” VEER” .

In multiplexes on saturday veer doing good business compared to friday opening is (70-75)%

In single screens “VEER” creates fire opening is (90-100)%. With packed houses .

  • Nauman, DDD was a multi starrer film with Akshay, Sunil, Paresh, Katrerina were da leads. Veer has only one star nd its only Salman khan. How come Veer z a 44 crore film nd DDD z a mere 30 crore. As far as I know, DDD was a 40+ crore film with a lavish look. Nd abt Jodha Akbar, u cant avoid facts in terms of ur ignorance. U r a good fact finder. So search da link Arshan gave nd saw wat happened. Its better u change ur perception abt Veer. In no way u can prove ur verdict ryt abt it. Sry 2 say. A film which z da second highest grosser in bollywood history after 3i in most of da places, and which z breaking all da records in single screen z going 2 be an average z not acceptable at all. Sry 2 differ.

  • Just watched movie first half of movie was good but after that salman and minthandra acting was superb sohail dont know why interconnected with this film .People should watch movie coz if u love warrior stuff movies in which little love angle involved like (first knight, hellen of troy) .On the whole nice movie i give 3/5 coz of hardworkness of technical staff, director and salman.thanks

By the way i m fan of SRK so its my neutral unbiased point of view.
