Veer Movie Review

To be honest, I didn’t really have great expectations from Veer. The promos weren’t too exciting, Anil Sharma’s last few films were strictly average, the cast wasn’t very appealing either and Zarine Khan looked plumpy (if that’s any reason). But about 30 minutes into the film, it turned out to be quite enjoyable, the first half infact was very enjoyable.

Before we dig in any deeper, the story first.  Veer is a revenge tale of the Pindhari’s against the Raja of Madhavgarh. The Raja (played by Jackie Shroff), a victim of the Divide and Rule strategy employed by the British, betrays the Pindari’s killing thousands of them. In return one brave Pindari, Prithvi Singh (played by Mithun Chakraborty) chops off the right hand of the Raja. Both swear revenge.

Years later, the son of Prithvi – Veer (Salman Khan) takes on the might of the British and the cruel Raja, who is unaware that his very own daughter Yashodhara (Zarine Khan) is in love with his greatest enemy.

What works in Veer

  • The love story works big time in the first half, right from the extremely sweet introductory scene of Zarine Khan, when she first sees Veer.. to those heart warming moments in UK. Anil Sharma to his credit has handled the romantic parts pretty well.
  • The first half keeps you hooked throughout and the film does get very interesting at interval point.
  • The action sequences, although not as many as those in Wanted, are extremely well choreographed. Should work big time with the single screen audience
  • What’s also important while watching a film like Veer, is a bit of patience. Don’t go in expecting a fast-paced action romantic film. Don’t expect any subtlety either, Veer has shades of Gadar – its loud (at times too loud) and raw. If the hero roaring like a lion, mouthing exaggerated dialogues, taking on 10 men at a time is your cup of tea, you will end up enjoying Veer. Otherwise, the romance works as a saving grace.
  • The chemistry between Salman Khan and Mithunda was nice to watch.
  • The music was fantastic. Its Sajid- Wajid’s best work in ages! LOVED Surili Akhiyon Wale.

Negatives

  • The problem with Veer is, when its good its very good. But when bad, its very bad! The film had enough potential to be far more effective and engaging, but the screenplay writer (Shaktimaan Talwar) and its executor (Anil Sharma) goof up the second half.
  • Sohail Khan’s character was unnecessary and Jackie Shroff’s more important negative character doesn’t work.
  • Why is a feel-good ending an absolute must for every Bollywood film? The impact would probably have been slightly more if not for the clichéd ending.
  • Veer has far too many songs, 3 in the first and 3 more in the second. The music is good, but the extended song and dance numbers just stretch the film. Preferably for better impact, a couple of songs should either be chopped off or shortened.

Performances

  • Salman Khan is slightly over the top in the initial reels (first 20 mins), but quickly gets his act right and delivers a good performance.
  • Zarine Khan looks gorgeous (as the princess) in the first half, its hard to take your eyes off her. Strangely in the second, the make up men don’t get her look right.
  • Mithunda is in form and delivers a knock out performance, which will be received with whistles from the single screen audience.
  • Sohail Khan is outright irritating. Just an extension of his funny acts from almost all his films.
  • Jackie Shroff looks out of shape, average performance.
  • The rest don’t get much scope.

Overall, Veer isn’t close to as bad as some of the reviews suggest. Its watchable and very enjoyable. At the box office, Veer should do well on single screens.

Rating: ★★★☆☆ Good.

  • Associate producer of Veer, Pratik Veer Galani said on facebook-

opening is 7.3 crores….6.6 cr plus 70 lakh telugu..
expecting 6.5 today plus same on sunday…..5 on monday …then 7 on tuesday so 32cr by tuesday….everone cheer up……expecting 20cr dist share till tuesday….:)

what we regret: that 2nd half was 15min shorter and dad son fight wasnt there….everone says it would have been the biggest blockbuster had critics supported and had 2nd half been refined…..
anyways cheer up we re on track:)

  • Hey couldnt see Veer today.. Houseful at liberty theatre…and also had some work… will catch tommorow for sure..By the way awesome opening i heard. Salman again gives a hit touchwood.

  • @Prity- u r not getting my comment… it says veer has collected 5.6 cr upto 6 pm in the evng, which means evening and night shows are still left 2 count…… so it’ll easily go beyond 7cr.

  • PRITY, dont worry it is upto 6 pm. collections not total days . Is that clear baby ?

TOtal saturdays collections will be nearly 8 crores . Bcoz today is a holyday & also ” VEER” opens better than friday at multiplexes .

In single screens just doing fire cracking business around 90%- 100% . With packed houses .

  • @Rajib- anytime dude!!

@Prity- feel good and don’t worry. veer will collect above 7 cr for sure!!! so just chill and wait for tomorrow’s collection, which agai i’m going to think will be high!!

the first premiere show i watched, i was with a girl, and too busy with her (if you know what i mean !). so i did not concentrate on the movie much. the aesthetics of the movie is exactly like yuvraaj. so i dismissed the movie from the start and wasn’t too bothered about it. besides i was too busy and too excited doing other things to watch the movie !
anyway, i went and watched it again on my own yesterday. and believe me the movie is awesome. its a different movie. not perfect but definately a mans movie. better than most movies. definately better than APKGK, fashion, new york etc. worth a watch. the pairing of salman with ”disco dancer” mithunda was magic. they should make films together more often.

    nauman

it definately is a partial copy of the hollywood film taras bulba. not a full copy, but a lot of the storyline is similar. i have seen taras bulba many times and its one of my favourite movies. in the film tony curtis and his brother belong to the mongol race, and both go off to study abroad. and tony curtis falls in love in a similar manner.thier father is played by yul brynner just like mithunda. i think thats where the similarities between the two films end.

    boxoffice:

veer has actually beaten the record of three idiots in certain cinemas, to emerge as the biggest first day earner ever in those cinemas. but overall of course three idiot is the biggest hit ever in the history of bollywood. nonetheless veer has emerged as the biggest first day earner ever in certain cinemas. only time will tell if it can sustain to become a hit at least.

  • @Rajib- u don’t need to mention it…. n i personally think hina is d most loyal saman fan in this site……. salute to her loyalty… keep it going girl!!!

@Prity- overseas we will know in a day or 2…. but seems decent….rocking in dubai..pakistan..ok in uk usa and aus!!!

  • Taran Adarsh didn’t like it.. gave it 1.5/5
My brother didn’t like it and asked me not to waste my time over it.. he said it’s a poor movie in direction.. as I expected because I didn’t like the movie Gadar.. the direction was so poor
The manager (who’s Indian) at the multiplexes in the mall also told me: it’s not that good movie.

I planned to watch it today but after hearing all that about Veer so I’m hesitated..loved to see Salman Khan in this role for 1st time in his life.. but if the movie is poor in direction so I might get bored.. still can’t decide whether to see it or not.

  • Hi Indicine Team and the lovely people out there,

I have been following Indicine for quite a long time now. Have been a silent reader for all
comments and reviews that have been posted for various movies.
Today i finally thought of giving my words out for this Movie “VEER”.

    So finally here i go.

I have been reading lots of reviews on this movie in the newspaper, internet and various blogging sites.
I finally viewed the Movie taking my time out. To tell you to my surprise the popularity of this Star “Salman Khan” is beyond the generations, From Kids to Families to elders (heading towards age of 75) were there today at 8:00 am in morning shows , though the multiplexes were not full thanks to our critics
(stupid or not .. i leave it to you people).

Pindaris — How many of us know about Pindaris before Salman brought before us, i believe none of us.

    Movie builds up telling.

    1. Who are Pindaris , their motto of Life and their culture.
Learning:- Every culture is unique and respect it.
    2. Madhavgarh’s King betray Pindaris.
Learning:- Do not work for money before knowing the intentions.
    3. Veer’s Educational trip and Love for her Motherland
Learning:- Nation is above everything, respect other’s nation too..
    4. Veer conveying of Love for Yashodhara to his father.
Learning:- Share everything with your Parents .. they are the best Friends ever you can get.
    5. Yashodhara against her father.
Learning:- Truth is greater than everything, betraying the father for life of people of state in this movie is good example.
    6. Veers capability to influence Madhavgarh’s king to send his half army in search of Pindaris.., which wins him battle.
Learning: Mind is more powerful than sword.
    7. Veers decision to fight against father to let Britishers Go when the Pindari’s are on verge of taking Madhavgarh down was to create influence on Rajput society to take the Britishers down.
Learning: Right time and right decision is necessary to have a mass awakening.

The movie is OK, there can be no comparison to this movie to any other Periodic movies, its just that Pindaris is an unknown subject and to relate to it in the manner as its shown in the movie is difficult to digest for this generation.

I feel the script was very good, kudos to Salman, the message of importance of education and how it can solve many issues without war was conveyed beautifully.
I felt that the backdrop of the movie was its Screenplay, could have been more influential and
the message that was trying to be conveyed could have been conveyed more simply …

Would like to say “Veer unites the country”, A brave attempt to make people realize “The Pride is in the Nation”.

If a common man like me can get so many good learnings from a movie, on what basis the critics
can rate it 1.5 stars and say that “its an impossible movie”. The movie never appeared to me dragging neither i felt bored , though their were some unnecessary scenes, Sohail Khan if had not been in movie would not have impacted it any ways, but having him has though only degraded the performance, except at few places.

Its a good movie to watch but don’t go with lots of expectations and don’t COMPARE

So finally you must be looking out for Rating … from me …. “I don’t rate movies on scale of 5 if they
convey me good things its good worth watching ” ….

And i could find 7 useful learnings ………. how many did you people ???

    Take care People..
Enjoy every second of your life …..

  • @Fathiya .. I am a hardcore Salman fan. Before watching even I was nervous coz of reviews. But believe me I watched it with my mom n she is 45.She loved it n she is not a Salman fan.You may not like it but its worth watching on big screen. Its better than DMG n Pyar Impossible.

  • Oh.. I forgot also to mention that Anupama Sharma, on NDTV Channel on “Picture This” tonight said the following: If u want to see a bad bollywood movie go and watch Veer!!

Now how can I go and watch it?!!!!!

Indicine Team: do u agree for what she mentioned?

  • Hina: if the movie is a “Quality” in direction, in the script.. I’d love to see it.. if it’s nothing less than Jodha Akbar and Ashoka.. with the same quality.. ofcourse I’d love to see it.. but don’t know whom I hv to believe..to believe u guys who praise the movie, or Anupama Sharma and my brother and the fellow who told me that it’s not that good movie.. believe me.. I don’t know.. but I sensed it from the trailer..that it’s something similar to Yuvraaj..the same quality in terms of direction, and direction for me is very important.. I found PI & DMG good movies, the direction was good so I enjoyed watching them.. some movies when u watch u feel the bad direction e.g. Gadar.. didn’t like it at all and Veer is for the same director.

I think I’ve to wait and see the audience’s responses for Veer in our country..if they removed it from our cinemas in a week.. then it’s diffentely a bad movie.. they removed Chance pe Dance after just a week!!
    DMG is still running successfuly

  • @Fathiya ..Sure u can wait 4 a week.N I think it will sustain. It doesn’t have class of Jodha Akbar but it is better than Asoka.N m watching DMG at the moment.N believe in ur own eyes.Watch the movie n then show concern.
BTW Taran gave both DMG n CPD 1.5 stars.

  • Fathiya, reviews are just personal opinions. Just because some Anupama Sharma doesn’t like it, doesn’t mean you would hate it too. Critics thrashed Dulha Mil Gaya, Love Story 2050, Pyaar Impossible.. But you liked it, didnt you? So we all have different tastes, check out the trailers.. see if it appeals to you, if it does just go and watch it. If it doesn’t skip it.

Naveen, very good and detailed review, apologies for approving it late, henceforth your comments with the same email id and name will be live instantly. Regarding the script, thought Salman is potentially a very good writer for the future. He’ll learn a lot from Veer. Loved the way he sets up the romance and those “learnings” were a good read. You did make sense :)

Akhlaq, you hit upon the same points. Agree with your review. The story had immense potential, but the screenplay writers are to be blamed big time for the second half. Veer is flawed, yes, but personally, I liked it mainly because the expectations were low. Can’t expect much from an Anil Sharma film (never liked him much as a director) so probably ended up liking it a bit more than you did. :)

  • @naveen ..Very concise review.Really liked it.N ur learnings have touched my heart.Actually u have conveyed what I felt after watching the movie.Wish u were one of the critics.

  • Fathiya Aapi:
if back ground music appeals u then Veer is for u
if fight on horses and with swords appeal u then Veer is for u
if Twist at interval point appeals u then Veer is for u
if Salman’s body appeals u then Veer is for u
if Zarine’s cute look appeals u then Veer is for u

  • Indicine .. I agree I have always doubted Anil Sharma.Only because of him I was so nervous before watching Veer. But its Salman n Lovely Zarine along with sweet music which mesmerized me in the theater.Salman is multi-talented.He acts, paints n now writes.
