Veer Movie Review

To be honest, I didn’t really have great expectations from Veer. The promos weren’t too exciting, Anil Sharma’s last few films were strictly average, the cast wasn’t very appealing either and Zarine Khan looked plumpy (if that’s any reason). But about 30 minutes into the film, it turned out to be quite enjoyable, the first half infact was very enjoyable.

Before we dig in any deeper, the story first.  Veer is a revenge tale of the Pindhari’s against the Raja of Madhavgarh. The Raja (played by Jackie Shroff), a victim of the Divide and Rule strategy employed by the British, betrays the Pindari’s killing thousands of them. In return one brave Pindari, Prithvi Singh (played by Mithun Chakraborty) chops off the right hand of the Raja. Both swear revenge.

Years later, the son of Prithvi – Veer (Salman Khan) takes on the might of the British and the cruel Raja, who is unaware that his very own daughter Yashodhara (Zarine Khan) is in love with his greatest enemy.

What works in Veer

  • The love story works big time in the first half, right from the extremely sweet introductory scene of Zarine Khan, when she first sees Veer.. to those heart warming moments in UK. Anil Sharma to his credit has handled the romantic parts pretty well.
  • The first half keeps you hooked throughout and the film does get very interesting at interval point.
  • The action sequences, although not as many as those in Wanted, are extremely well choreographed. Should work big time with the single screen audience
  • What’s also important while watching a film like Veer, is a bit of patience. Don’t go in expecting a fast-paced action romantic film. Don’t expect any subtlety either, Veer has shades of Gadar – its loud (at times too loud) and raw. If the hero roaring like a lion, mouthing exaggerated dialogues, taking on 10 men at a time is your cup of tea, you will end up enjoying Veer. Otherwise, the romance works as a saving grace.
  • The chemistry between Salman Khan and Mithunda was nice to watch.
  • The music was fantastic. Its Sajid- Wajid’s best work in ages! LOVED Surili Akhiyon Wale.

Negatives

  • The problem with Veer is, when its good its very good. But when bad, its very bad! The film had enough potential to be far more effective and engaging, but the screenplay writer (Shaktimaan Talwar) and its executor (Anil Sharma) goof up the second half.
  • Sohail Khan’s character was unnecessary and Jackie Shroff’s more important negative character doesn’t work.
  • Why is a feel-good ending an absolute must for every Bollywood film? The impact would probably have been slightly more if not for the clichéd ending.
  • Veer has far too many songs, 3 in the first and 3 more in the second. The music is good, but the extended song and dance numbers just stretch the film. Preferably for better impact, a couple of songs should either be chopped off or shortened.

Performances

  • Salman Khan is slightly over the top in the initial reels (first 20 mins), but quickly gets his act right and delivers a good performance.
  • Zarine Khan looks gorgeous (as the princess) in the first half, its hard to take your eyes off her. Strangely in the second, the make up men don’t get her look right.
  • Mithunda is in form and delivers a knock out performance, which will be received with whistles from the single screen audience.
  • Sohail Khan is outright irritating. Just an extension of his funny acts from almost all his films.
  • Jackie Shroff looks out of shape, average performance.
  • The rest don’t get much scope.

Overall, Veer isn’t close to as bad as some of the reviews suggest. Its watchable and very enjoyable. At the box office, Veer should do well on single screens.

Rating: ★★★☆☆ Good.

  • Aamir watched the movie n he said tht its very good n he cann’t do such kinda role.N he also advised salman to write more stories.

  • all the records at single screens have been shattered by a mile ghajini wanted 3idiots no where to seen just check BOX office india just look at the difference in the collections of veer and other films

veer ne phod diya sallu ne tod diya

  • Veer had a bumper first day at single screens with 80-100% collections while multiplexes had average collections on day one. Multiplexes in metroes like Mumbai and Delhi had first day collections of around 50% while Bangalore was worst with 30%. But multiplexes in places like Jaipur, Kota, Nagpur, Agra and Indore were very good with 70-80% collections. Overall the first day can be called good. The reports are mixed but with a holiday it should put up good first week numbers. The first day collections in places like Bihar, CP Berar, CI and Rajasthan are huge

  • nauman bhai…

salman is among 35% pure people of industry . who never publicize his movie with critics and in recent interview with omar qureshi on zoom he clear he never gave priorty to media like others stars do when there movie got released, he even not given media priorty at time when maine pyaar kiyaa released and so , on he never till yet need 65% impure critics or media that priorty so they are jealous of sallu bhai .in short london dreams sallu bhai character of mannu is dedicated to sallu bhai who had natural talent against this publicty kaa baadshaahs who are trying to make sallu bhai down similar to role of ajay devgan who in from silently making mannu down by doing his strategy . but as truth never hides INSHAAALLAAH veer will get success AAMEEN.

but nauman bhai your words against sallu bhai ”ask Salman khan how much u paid to critics at the time of Wanted ???” speciaaly huds me and allsallu bhai fans we all know sallu never gave priorty .

i know dont like salman but i also not like your akki but i always aprreciate his comic acts and so, i always try not to give bad wishes to any stars but if colleague like you nauman on indicine gave words against sallu bhai then it will make our common aprreciation difference as being akki fan you only gave sallu veer 3 stars then ,why are you now trying to make sallu bhai down ?

but i had a word from aamir bhai” all izz well all izz well all sallu bhai fans and me that koi baat nahi veer is ALHAMDULILLAH succedded and it will get huge success INSHAAALLAAH AAMEEN

  • I watched veer yesterday and have to say only one thing wwoooooooooow sallu bhai at his best and the plus point is that i watched it in single screen and I cant forget THE YELLING THE SHOUTING THE SCREAMING THE CLAPPING THE WHISTLING out and out entertainer for sallu bhai fans back with a bang shows till sunday are housefull and on 26 three shows are full in all single screen. today m going in multiplex for the show but I know the enjoyment of this movie is par in single screen this man is really loved to an extend by the audience

  • Veer Opening Note :
    Delhi – 63 Lakhs [Up-to 6:00 PM(including advance booking collections)],
    Mumbai – 89 Lakhs [Up-to 6:00 PM(including advance booking collections)].
Single screens are getting better reception for upto 90% collections

  • Nauman,Salman has a huge fan following n he don’t require to feed the critics. In an interview,he said tht my films r upto audience n my fans n they r the real critic of my film…

  • common guys we are trying to downplay the single screens every person doesnot have enough money to go to multiplexes.
i want to say this because this is truth of our indian society we all liked 3idiots but dint you think they have very similar plot that of TZP and many sequences are jsut cut and paste of munnabhai series(like ragging one and arguing with the dean)
but no review poin towards that why because it is liked on multiplexes
but we are criticising veer because it is liked on single screens because they are poor or the contribution didnt take the collections to as high as multiplexes. but we have to admit the no of ticket sold by VEER will be more than 3idiots atleast on first day. i also find faults not one but many but one side taran says in some other review to not to ask when why how and now he is asking how when. he cannot stand on one thing he is a confused guy. and indicine you gave 3stars that not bad but the thing i like that you also focuses on good points as well many other also give 3 stars but more on the negative side

  • Veer First Day Business

    Saturday 23rd January 2010 11.30 IST

    Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Veer has done good business on day one with around 6.50 crore nett as per early estimates. The film has performed fantastically well in Bihar, CP Berar, CI and Rajasthan. Bihar seems to be a record first day while other circuits mentioned above are amongst the top three ever.

Delhi/UP has also done well thanks to humungous business in UP single screens. Multiplexes in UP have also performed well. Mumbai, East Punjab and Nizam have seen okay business while Mysore, Tamil Nadu and Kerala are poor.

The film has by far the biggest first day ever for a Salman Khan starrer eclipsing the 5 crore nett of Wanted and Partner. Veer has mixed reports so its hard to say what will happen over the next few days but a good extended weekend will give the film good chances to emerge a success

  • IF u people are talking about the reaction of salman towards the critics it’s not new yaar earlier at the time of yuuvraj salman said it in the interview in the newspaper named bombay times that”WHO THE HELL CARES ABOUT THE CRITICS IF THEY SO MUCH KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THE FILM MAKING AND IF THEY CAN JUDGE THE PULSE OF THE AUDIENCE THEN WHY CAN’T THEY COME FORWARD AND MAKE ONE”and some of the critics are there who had tried their hand in producing and direction what they have done e.g
    KHALID MOHAMMED(DIRECTOR)
    FILM MADE FIZA,TEZEEB
VIVEK VASVANI use to cricise movie on times now(producer of dulha mil gaya )
so this is nothing new salman and media are rarely in hand to hand but still this man stand against all odds.
    SALLU BHAI ROCKS

  • Nauman after such poor ratings all the sites will try to show collections a bit lower accorind to tpratik collection is more close to 7.5-8cr and believe me or not he usually dont lies like other prodeucer (take blue as ex their prodeucer claims 33cr in 3days all fake)
yes one more thing sallu fans its official that veer opening on single sreens is bigger than any film till date leaving behind ghajini and wanted.
but yes nauman i agree with one thing which you says that there may be some chances that the movie can go down on weekdays but as a sallu fan i can do only one thing ALL izzz wellllll.

  • Nitesh:
as a neutral person i will say 6.5 cr for 1st day ALL IZZ not Well.
it should cross 8 cr , and for hit status collection should like this
Friday 8 cr Sat 9cr Sun 10 cr Mon 6 Cr tuse 8 cr wed 5 cr Thur 4 cr = 50 cr 1st week
    25 cr 2nd week
    20 cr rest of life
    total = 90 – 95 cr life time
but after 1st day collections my prediction is
    Fri 6.5 Sat 6 Sun 7 mon 3 Tus 5 wed 3 thu 3 = 33- 35 cr 1st week
    10 cr 2nd week ( next week 3 movies are releasing )
    10 cr rest of life
    total = 53 – 55 cr
i am not pulling down it is my prediction after friday collections, public reaction and critics rating
and i am damn sure abt my predictions.

  • Veer flops, watch first day first show on b.hungama, another flop from salman, now on im gonna nver watch a salman movie, his films are so unpredictable…

  • Stardust.co.In

Salman Khan, Zarine Khan starrer Anil Sharma’s epic ‘Veer’ which opened yesterday at theatres worldwide, has done excellent business at single screen theatres in North India, especially in Rajasthan (where major portion of the film was shot) and in Uttar Pradesh.

  • Stardust.co.In

Salman Khan’s earlier super hit flick ‘Wanted’ had also met with the same response from multiplexes and was a super duper hit in the north and single screen theatres. In fact, the film had picked up on the basis of word of mouth and even this time is same .

  • First of all i wanna say all you guys..plzz dun fight ..lyk m akki’s fan,m sallu’s fan,m srk’s…….we are here for only 2 knw the opinion of others abt a particular movie.
@saurabh….guys lyk you irritate ppls all the tym..why r u typing one single word many times,if you wanna say in your opinion it will be flop than simply say “i think it wil b a flop”.

  • Die hard salman fan-best movie ever salman fan-very good well wishers-lovable neutral-average anti salman-worst hope it do well it will good for bollywood.and all the best nauman.

  • SATURDAY: VEER improving in multiplexes with 60-75%(better than friday with 45-55%).
single screens are on fire, especially bihar, Kanpur and Allahabad.(today’s first show in these places opens with 95-100%) and overall single screens 85-90%

  • @nauman
well sites lyk boxoffice india are showing that the first day collections are 6.5 cr which is approximately correct but the accurate and exact collections for first day are “6 crore 94 lakh nett” (i posted the collections in indicine yesterday at 1:30 am)

  • @rajib halder
bro u hav no idea wat u saying..i knw ur maligning all the things..and plzz dun post false news..
plzz give rite info. to ppls which can help ppls and movies too.

  • HIM dude , I ma not saying 7.75 crores .Its pratik galani confirms that his dad vijay galani expects 7.50 crores or more . Thanks dude .

  • guys plzz dun follow TARAN ADARSH review for any movie..just give a look to these review from him and you gonna know how sick he is…..

    London Dreams 3/5
    ………
    Yuvraaj 3/5

its really funny that he thinks the yuvraaj is equally good lyk london dreams.
and recently he gave 3 star to pyar impossible..2 star to bolo raam.
so he thinks veer(1.5 star) is not even better than bolo raam.
