Veer Movie Review

To be honest, I didn’t really have great expectations from Veer. The promos weren’t too exciting, Anil Sharma’s last few films were strictly average, the cast wasn’t very appealing either and Zarine Khan looked plumpy (if that’s any reason). But about 30 minutes into the film, it turned out to be quite enjoyable, the first half infact was very enjoyable.

Before we dig in any deeper, the story first.  Veer is a revenge tale of the Pindhari’s against the Raja of Madhavgarh. The Raja (played by Jackie Shroff), a victim of the Divide and Rule strategy employed by the British, betrays the Pindari’s killing thousands of them. In return one brave Pindari, Prithvi Singh (played by Mithun Chakraborty) chops off the right hand of the Raja. Both swear revenge.

Years later, the son of Prithvi – Veer (Salman Khan) takes on the might of the British and the cruel Raja, who is unaware that his very own daughter Yashodhara (Zarine Khan) is in love with his greatest enemy.

What works in Veer

  • The love story works big time in the first half, right from the extremely sweet introductory scene of Zarine Khan, when she first sees Veer.. to those heart warming moments in UK. Anil Sharma to his credit has handled the romantic parts pretty well.
  • The first half keeps you hooked throughout and the film does get very interesting at interval point.
  • The action sequences, although not as many as those in Wanted, are extremely well choreographed. Should work big time with the single screen audience
  • What’s also important while watching a film like Veer, is a bit of patience. Don’t go in expecting a fast-paced action romantic film. Don’t expect any subtlety either, Veer has shades of Gadar – its loud (at times too loud) and raw. If the hero roaring like a lion, mouthing exaggerated dialogues, taking on 10 men at a time is your cup of tea, you will end up enjoying Veer. Otherwise, the romance works as a saving grace.
  • The chemistry between Salman Khan and Mithunda was nice to watch.
  • The music was fantastic. Its Sajid- Wajid’s best work in ages! LOVED Surili Akhiyon Wale.

Negatives

  • The problem with Veer is, when its good its very good. But when bad, its very bad! The film had enough potential to be far more effective and engaging, but the screenplay writer (Shaktimaan Talwar) and its executor (Anil Sharma) goof up the second half.
  • Sohail Khan’s character was unnecessary and Jackie Shroff’s more important negative character doesn’t work.
  • Why is a feel-good ending an absolute must for every Bollywood film? The impact would probably have been slightly more if not for the clichéd ending.
  • Veer has far too many songs, 3 in the first and 3 more in the second. The music is good, but the extended song and dance numbers just stretch the film. Preferably for better impact, a couple of songs should either be chopped off or shortened.

Performances

  • Salman Khan is slightly over the top in the initial reels (first 20 mins), but quickly gets his act right and delivers a good performance.
  • Zarine Khan looks gorgeous (as the princess) in the first half, its hard to take your eyes off her. Strangely in the second, the make up men don’t get her look right.
  • Mithunda is in form and delivers a knock out performance, which will be received with whistles from the single screen audience.
  • Sohail Khan is outright irritating. Just an extension of his funny acts from almost all his films.
  • Jackie Shroff looks out of shape, average performance.
  • The rest don’t get much scope.

Overall, Veer isn’t close to as bad as some of the reviews suggest. Its watchable and very enjoyable. At the box office, Veer should do well on single screens.

Rating: ★★★☆☆ Good.

  • hi all,

before posting my review, i am highly flattered by the fact that my review was being awaited. Wow…thats an honor. thanx Indicine & Hina for giving me the importance.

Well i’m extremely sorry for being late but the show started at 11:30PM (PST) and i’ve just come back after watching the show and though i’m extremely sleepy, yet i know i cant sleep without posting my review.

I’m writing it right after posting this message. one humble request…whatever opinion i’m going to post is what i honestly felt. It might differ from a few’s point of view but i cant alter what i experienced and felt.

  • Veer – My Review

Just imagine this…a chef plans to cook a delicious dish for a very important event. He gets a wonderful recipe for the dish. he gets a few of ingredients of supreme quality and then he has to mix it up in the right proportion. But somehow, he confuses the proportions. The result will be a dish which will definitely give a hint of those quality ingredients and a distinct feel of a nice recipe will be there. But it will also leave a strange taste on the taste buds and after eating the dish, one would come up with certain hopes such as…”Only if there was bit more salt”; “Only if the gravy was a bit more cooked”!!!

Unfortunately, this is exactly what has happened with Veer. A Perfect recipe (the basic idea – an epic love story of a patriotic warrior who also has a strong bonding with his father). Then there were some excellent quality ingredients (some highly competent actors, great music and a grand canvas to work on). But somehow the chef (Anil Sharma( confuses the proportion of these ingredients. Just like the out of proportion dish i mentioned above, when i finished watching “Veer”, i was thinking exactly the same…”Man! the idea was perfect; the music was wonderful; a few performances were great; the opportunity of making a historic movie with such a great hype was there, and one of the most loved stars of recent times (Salman Khan) was also there….then what went wrong? why was i feeling that the movie is never going to end|? And after a little thinking I got my answers…The bad taste in my mouth was because of the following reasons…

    1. The direction was very inconsistent; some scenes were simply brilliant and some were highly pathetic.

    2. The recipe was highly over-cooked, yet the chef finished it and garnished it in an extreme hurry. The build up for the climax was way over-cooked and the actual finishing was nowhere near the expectations. Its like climbing a huge mountain in hope of watching the sun go down and when you reach there, actually the sun had already gone down.

3, A few ingredients were really bad in quality; Sohail Khan tops the list, he is as irritating as ever. Jakie Shrof’s role has no meat at all…All the britishers acted extremely poorly…they all seemed so artificial. The Soimbar sequence with the Hunk caled Rhino and the way Salman twists his neck was simply pathetic and was out of cartoon network.

Well its not all that bad though. There are some hints of very nice taste in this dish as well. Mithun was the best of all…this is his best work after Guru. Although I found my favorite star Salman Khan’s performance to be much better in Wanted and London Dreams, yet he is in total control over here. A few weak scenes in the beginning though, but he is too good when he is furious.

The basic story was very good but the screenplay lacked power, dialogues lacked the punch which is highly required for a movie of this nature.

Music was soulful and beautiful, but this is where the chef Sharma really messed things up. He made a mess of his best ingredient and the songs, in spite of being beautiful visually and sounding great, prove to be hindrances and cause the movie to gain the unrequested extra running time.

Zarine is beautiful, but i dont know why i’m feeling that she is going to find it difficult to have a long life in indian cinema.

In a nut-shell, i am highly no totally disappointed with Veer, but it could’ve been much much better if the chef sharma had paid more interest on mixing up the contents in the right proportion.

or maybe the choice of the chef was not right all together. I cant find anyone else to blame but the director for this mediocre attempt which could actually have been a classic.

My Rating (only because of Salman, Mithun, Songs and a few good scenes…

    2.5/5

  • one typing error in the second last paragraph of my review..so am posting it again with correction…

n a nut-shell, “i am not totally” disappointed with Veer, but it could’ve been much much better if the chef sharma had paid more interest on mixing up the contents in the right proportion.

(the words in inverted comas got mistyped earlier)

And when thing i want to express..Although i haven’t liked the film that much, yet i will be extremely happy to see this dream project of Salman to be a super success. As the guy deserves a monumental hit, (specially when one of the best movies last year, London Dreams flopped). This is his dream project and i really like him too much ever since the “Meine Pyar Kiya” days. I cant express how much i still wish that the director and the dialogue writer had done more justice to Veer.

Ok guys now i’m feeling really drowsy. See u tomorrow.

  • So you really think that this movie is on par with 3 Idiots? you have given it the same rating!!
its strange how your expectations were tuned down for this movie –
considering it has a successful director, actor (same as 3i) plus a magnum opus setting.
have the salman fans actually scared you in giving a more favourable review?
while you go all out to bring aamir down no matter how sincere and dedicated his efforts are?
i think you don’t judge the movies on the same criteria and that is totally unfair.
set your ethics right before judging anyone else.

  • So Sallu Fans…..
look Akhlaq’s review now u will find that there was only Nauman and Indicine who gave maximum rating….
now i am sure that Veer gona only avarage fair. may be 1st day’s collections are near to 7 Cr , but is 7 Cr enough for this type of movie ???
doesnt matter single screne or double screne. overall movie should get atleast 23 cr for this weekend. and i dont think so it will cross 20 cr in its 1st weekend and 35 cr in 1st week.
and make sure Veer has only one week for work because next week 2 big releases are also coming.
best of luck with sallu baba….
btw Akhlaq again i will say that ur reviews are batter then me and indicine like CPD….
    keep it up

  • Every film has a lack of direction..no movie can be perfect..Nauman u r trying to pull down this movie..u can give only ur opinion but u r trying to make it down..I know that u r the biggest fan of akshay kumar but u r not enemy of salman khan so u should playing a role in fair…movie never get hit or flop by review it depends on audience..we are few people those are visiting this kind of side those are highly biased..bcoz their aim is to earn money..but they r making huge loss for indian film industry..I am from bangladesh and I proud to be a Bangladeshi bcoz we dont have any biased critics as india and pakistan. we cant watch indian film in a theater so I cant tell u how audience react after watching this movie..but i know it would be much better than karzz, kI and Blue but these movie got 4 star out of 5 by taran..how was that possible? I should recommend nauman and akhlaq dont try to become a critics try to become a director like james cameron who became director being truck driver..I know my english is not good..so forgive me for that..wish u all the best

  • Kaiqum Bhai
    listen:
if u wana talk abt me then listen:
most of the time i am the first one who put his review before any other reviews even before release in india. and when u will analyze my reviews with other critics who have more than 10 – 15 yrs experience in bollywood then u wont find me far from them.
that thing shows that my reviews, my ratings , my analyze about movie is similar to other good critics.
it also shows that i have guts to be a good critic.
as far as concern abt direction , so let u know i have 3 complete scripts for movies and one of them i sent to indicine 2 months ago but they didnt read yet they didnt respond me yet, i dont know aht is wrong with them. i sent that story to Amish , Sudeep , Hina and Usman and all those people said that it is deffrent and unique idea which never happened in indian cinema , i am not sure abt hallywood because i am not great fan of hollywood.
and writing is 1st step of direction, if any one can write a good screen play then it means he can direct a good movie as well because if director knows abt script very well he / she can make good movie.
and i didnt pull down Veer , i am the one who gave maximum rating…..

  • Nauman bhai..
thanks for replying me..if u have already made a good story then why u sent it to others..u should contact with any producer or director or keep it with urself. as far i know that u have a good idea about film so u know better who can give u the chance to make ur dream come true..I hope that one day u will make a movie and we will give our good review..if u find bad things of movie then u should recommend to the audience that some how they should watch the movie so that they can judge the film…..
I recommend to u to watch some hollywood flicks…..
    The shwashank redemption
    city of god—-brazilian movie
    Blow
    Memento
    Remember the titans
    The fight club
    Se7en
    The green mile
    Perfume the story of murderer

I want ur review about these movies..hope that i will get soon..my email address is md_kaiyum@yahoo.com..u can catch me on facebook. looking forward to hear u

  • Nav you back from cinema yet am sure veer should be finished its 2:10 am in uk here am sure he will come on the site to post some comments if he’s watched the film wana know what his reaction is

  • @ Naveed UK

yeah i went to watch da 21:30 show. finished just past midnight. dere were quite a lot of people. i enjoyed da film but it could have been better in all honesty. Akhlaq is spot on. Anil Sharma messes up. Salman was better in LD and WANTED. hez also good in dis azwell.

but am happy and slightly disappointed at da same time. However, every1 should still watch it in theatres. its well worth da money.

    my rating 3.5/5

  • i take back what i said earlier in another thread about this movie.

actually the movie is really good. ‘awesome’ is the best way to describe it from start to finish. after a long time we get to see an epic movie from bollywood. the ending could have been a bit better. nonetheless the movie is one of the best in the action genre. and definately the best movie this year so far.

worth a watch. its an action movie.

i will be dissapointed if the movie doesn’t at least become a hit.

    my revised rating 8/10.

  • i still think its shameful da way most critics r trying to bring da film down. its way better dan films like APKGK, DDD etc. at least wen u leave da hall ur talkin bout da film and singing da songs. i have to say dat i loved Taali on da big screen. amazing.

  • my comment were i said it could have been better in all honesty. i meant to say dat it could have been better in certain places. sorry for da typin error. am extremely tired. so am gonna go to sleep and will carry on da discussion later.

    tc

P.S plz make sure u see da film guyz.

  • i thing i want to mention is dat no1 could have played VEER better dan Salman. he owns da role and makes it hiz own. da relationship between Mithun and Salman is really touching. especially da fight. i had tears in my eyes for some strange reason.

guyz dis is just my opinon. go watch it and form ur own opinion.

  • ANOTHER THING GUYS.

JUST TO LET YOU ALL KNOW, VEER IS ACTUALLY A PARTIAL COPY OF THE 1960’S HOLLYWOOD MOVIE ”TARAS BULBA” – STARRING TONY CURTIS AND YUL BRYNNER.

  • Spiderman:
i think u r right because just watched trailer of Taras Bulba on u tube it is russian movie i think and so many scenes look like same , but all periodical movies look same in trailers.

  • B.O. update: ‘Veer’ starts very well at single screens, plexes dull
    – By Taran Adarsh, January 23, 2010 – 08:12 IST

Veer Salman Khan’s VEER opened exactly like WANTED. The film opened very well at single screens of North India specifically [Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan single screens were excellent], but the response at multiplexes was a contrast, in 30% to 40% range at several screens. At places, the occupancy was even lower.

The two factors that went in favour of WANTED were [i] superb reviews, with most critics loving the film and [ii] the all-round entertainment that WANTED had to offer. In this case [VEER], the reviews have been outright negative and the public response ranges from good to average to terrible. Meaning, the word of mouth is very, very mixed. Also, the entertainment quotient is lower than WANTED.

VEER has to perform exceedingly well in its first two weeks to recover its huge investment. Let’s wait and watch if the business shows a big jump in the coming days and the big-budget film maintains its pace at the ticket window for two complete weeks.

  • King:
i cant disclose the name of that site yet because it is not ready yet . that site is underconstruction. ones it lauch i will inform u.
and if indicine and that site will give me permission that i will put my reviews on both sites.

  • spiderman what happend to you suddenly first you said veers a boring film same as yuvraaj where you cant compare veer to yuvraaj because veer is in a different genre its action and yuvraaj was a romantic film, did you watch the film again probably enjoyed it the 2nd time and sayin its good now, its a bit weird isnt it

  • @ Nauman– In Dance India Dance show on Zee Tv yday salman had come. der he said it s one of d costliest films( epic movie) made so far. so d cost s really high so to recover it s a big task, not like wanted wer it was just some 30 cr.

And is der a scene in d movie like Mithun says- Ma angrazon ka khoon pijaunga..? bcoz in public reaction a guy was sayin that n laughin..;) Dharamji ki aathma guss gayi mithunda ke andar…;)
