Rakesh Roshan’s Statement on Krrish 3 Collections

Rakesh RoshanRight from the day Krrish 3 released in theatres, the producers of the film have been accused of ‘over-reporting’ the domestic box office collections of Krrish 3.

In a statement, producer-director Rakesh Roshan has said that most in the trade only go by assumptions and only know about 70% of the box office.

The veteran filmmaker said “Till Tuesday the all India net collection was Rs 237 crore (actuals till Tuesday Rs 236.52) while the international gross collections was Rs 54 crore. I don’t know about Krrish 3 breaking the records of Chennai Express but I know my figures and I feel elated.”

“We have put in so much of honesty and sincerity in the film. I am sure other films will break our records, but that doesn’t matter. It gives me an incentive to make better films, that’s all.”

“I’m not in a position to fudge the figures by Rs 40-50 crore. People don’t know the exact figures but I get all the figures from all over India in the morning. People just go by assumptions and know only 70% of box office while I know 100%. We opened at 4300 screens”

Do read our article on the controversial box office collections of Krrish 3.

UPDATE: Rakesh Roshan has also spoken to Bollywood Hungama about the controversy.

I really don’t know what their intentions were, but when they asked me for the figures, I willingly gave them the same. Now they say that the figure of Rs. 237.15 crores is gross and not nett.

I don’t know where this buzz about fake figures has emerged from, but I feel that there are some people who really don’t bother to go to the interiors and other sectors in a more detailed way to find out the actual numbers. I know the real figures; I have been getting updates from all my distributors, exhibitors and from places where my film is running right from the first day itself. So, I don’t really care about this line of thinking

How can I fudge Rs. 40-50 crore? Is it really that simple or is it a joke to change and pump up the collections? Besides they say that the figures I have shared are gross figures. In fact if I look at the gross figures that include the entertainment tax, and everything else, then Krrish 3’s collection has crossed Rs. 500 crores. I think they really need to go back and learn the difference between gross and nett figures first.

There is a definite disparity between the figures trade analysts are talking about and the overblown numbers claimed by the makers of the superhero movie. So what is the truth in this matter? Has Hrithik Roshan’s latest film really made that much money?
Numbers are supposed to be absolute, right? But not always, we find, not in the movie business, at least. That reminds us of the famousSiddhuism(the pearls of wisdom invented by former cricketer Navjot Singh Siddhu): statistics are like bikinis – what they reveal is glorious, but what they hide is essential!
And essential it is indeed to have some secrets as far as box office numbers are concerned. In an industry where you are rated by the glorious amount of moolah you rake in at the collection centres with your last film, the numbers game becomes a must-play part of the business. So when it was reported that Krrish 3entered the prestigious Rs 200 crore club recently with it’s ‘heroic’ box office collections, it raised many a starry eyebrow, particularly of the Khan kind.
The makers ofKrrish 3– the year’s hugely anticipated superhero flick that has bagged mixed reviews – started tomtomming the news that the movie had netted Rs 250 crore plus (some claimed that the business had reached the unbelievable Rs 500 crore mark!) soon after its release. But according to someone we know who knows Rakesh Roshan and the business, “The overblown and exaggerated figures are laughable. While it is understood that the movie has done good business irrespective of the fact that it has also received stinging criticism for its not-so-flattering special effects and the lack of a concrete plot, the movie has not exactly netted as much as the makers are claiming. It has certainly not broken the3 Idiotsrecord set by Aamir Khan, Raju Hirani and gang, and has not come even close to SRK’sChennai Expressprofits. The collections shown in the newspapers are gross numbers and not the net amount,” said our source.
“ I think the figures are healthy, but they are further boosted by striking a smart balance between the overseas numbers and the collections in India. Either of these collections is being mentioned as the net figure. Clearly, the makers are taking the liberty of adding the gross amount of the remaining collections without clarifying that it is not the NET amount. This has pushed the collection further up by another Rs 30 crore at least and that has madeKrrish 3stand tall and strong at the box office,” he added.
We also learned that some critics and trade analysts have been ‘taken care of’ so that they do not give clear numbers toKrrish 3collections. Some even refused to comment, keeping in mind the Roshans’ good reputation in the industry. Rakesh has his take on the whole issue. “I’m not in a position to fudge the figures by Rs 40-50 crore. People don’t know the exact figures, but I get all the figures from all over India in the morning. People just go by assumptions and know only 70 percent box-office information, while I know 100 percent. We opened at 4,300 screens,” he said in an interview.
Now we atBollywoodLifewonder what the real, honest and unbiased report card ofKrrish 3looks like. The box office collections at the moment are revealing the glory of the superhero, but are they still hiding the essentials he owns, all to look super cool?

  • @hrithiklover,dude which answer of indicine are you talking about? As far as i know indicine also mentioned that producers over report the figures in a previous article.. If you have faith in producer’s datas then its fine.. But even if k3 crosses 300 crs in india as per producer then also it will not a universal biggest grosser ever, like hahk, gadar, dhoom2, 3idiots, chennai express which were universal biggest grossers ever. I never beleived in producer’s datas and also will never beleive in future also.. For me still BOI is the best source for boxoffice, its may be because i do not have any favourite star like you people have, so i don’t have any problem when boi gives lower figure than producers..

  • Box Office column discontinued :
You and us thrive on our films and our film stars. We were the first paper to have started reporting box office numbers, but despite our best efforts in wanting to report accurate numbers, we have decided to discontinue this column. The stakes of filmmakers have increased so much that they are willing to go any distance to manipulate and jack up their numbers to beat each other’s records. While there is not much incentive for small films to report false numbers, big filmmakers happily report hiked up numbers. Their need for breaking records surpasses all their other needs. TOI being the largest and the most respected medium in the space of Entertainment, affects them when we report numbers that do not match their hiked numbers. Some common manias that we have observed:

Interestingly, while filmmakers have no hesitation in picking up the phone and trying to convince us about their false data, they will not send formal emails confirming the data as they are scared of subsequent expose. They know that they have achieved their purpose by media reporting ‘so and so beats so and so’. We will continue to love films and our stars but for the sake of you the reader, who bestow trust on us giving us a part of your life everyday, we cannot cheat you and report numbers knowing that they are inaccurate.

As a nation progresses, its industries evolve, mature, become more organised, more responsible, more accountable. Bollywood and software are two of India’s only truly global industries. The software industry, with companies like TCS, Infosys, Wipro and Cognizant, is today recognised and respected not just for the work it produces, but also for the corporate standards it has set. Why can’t Bollywood do the same?

Yes, any such transition will be difficult, even painful — because old habits are always difficult to shed, especially in an industry driven by personal egos. But, in the long run, the benefits that will accrue from genuine corporatisation will far outweigh the losses, if any. Banks will be more willing to lend to the industry, bringing down interest costs which are at present very high. Investors will be more open to acquiring equity if they are confident that the numbers aren’t cooked up. The stock market has time and again placed a premium on companies with high ethical and accounting standards, and discounted those that are known to take short-cuts. It’s time

Bollywood asked itself, why can’t we be as respected as we are popular? It will, over time, discover that ‘coming clean’ serves its own interest as much as it does everyone else’s.

Opening day record mania: Big films star thiking numbers from day one itself as big stars want to beat each other’s opening day records.

Highest weekend mania: Hiked up weekend numbers to show their supremacy over one another

`100 crore club mania: Films that have not reached the `100 crore mark but are close will insist that they have reached the `100 crore figure as they can’t resist being in the `100 crore club.

`200 crore club mania: This is the biggest club and we believe all our top stars are in this club. But it is not enough for them to be in the club. What is important is who is the biggest.

  • The collections used to match before because BOI was giving distributors/producers numbers directly. So, there was no controversy for films like 3 Idiots, Dabangg, Ready, Bodyguard, MNIK etc. But BOI started giving their own numbers in the name of independent tracking for films like Ra.One, Don 2, JTHJ, ETT, YJHD and now Krrish 3 just to increase the site views because if they keep reporting matching numbers then no one would bother to look at their site which is already outdated with old articles. SRK fans are pointing fingers towards producers numbers in case of Krrish 3 but not in case of SRK movies mentioned above because according to them the difference is minor in case of SRK movies but too big in case of Krrish 3. Reaaly, why double standards? Also, you can argue that Producers know exactly how their films are collecting as they get info from distributors/exhibitors directly. So, BOI is intentionally underreporting the numbers to get more views. Instead of saying that figures are manipulated from producers side, I can counter argument saying that it is manipulated from BOI side.

CE: 227 cr according to producer
    208 cr according to BOI
Krrish 3: 240 cr according to producer
    176 cr according to BO

If you say that producers are overreporting then the reverse is also true in this case- BOI is underreporting. The true figure should be above 208 cr according to BOI in case of Krrish 3 otherwise CE collections are also manipulated. The maximum number of movies with the difference in collections are of SRK.

SRK: Ra.One (Hit according to BOI- this reason alone is a proof how reliable BOI is), JTHJ, Don 2 (again it is not a clean hit but is according to BOI), CE
    Salman: ETT
    Ranbir: YJHD
    Hrithik: Krrish 3

No need to say anything more.

  • its not about any star or movie its hard for hr fans to accept but for k3 around 60 cr diff just unacceptable and for Raone and don 2 called hit due to their boxofficollection and if u c 2011 top hits u get your ans and u get their dub version in to acc as for ce then both hv to count in bb as raone 116+8 and don 2 106+7 apprx bcoz @120 cr ready is bb and in same year 12 sos and jthj diff is same 17 cr
    Jthj 121 and 105 and sos 105 & 88

  • That is utter gibberish. With the plethora of Superhero movies and special affects in Hollywood a movie like Krissh 3 stands no chance. It is amazing that it has even collected $2.3 million in the US. The domestic collections have been unprecedented and record breaking (and that is a fact not a hypotheses is as posted by many including the despicable BOI).
Personally special effects aside I found Krissh3 to as entertaining as any IronMan movies. On the contrary Chennai Express was nauseating and unbearable.

  • This 50-60 cr difference in collections is created by boi and not Rakesh Roshan. So, ask boi about this and not RR. As he himself is surprised saying that I don’t know what their intentions were when quoting 237 cr figure as gross instead of net. This sentence alone is a proof of the fact that it’s a manufactured controversy made by boi.

15 cr first day for Krrish 3???
16.5 cr first day for Ram Leela? Are they trying to fool people except for SRK fans?

  • @DRS I m not saying boi is right but as you say for K3 1st day is 15 cr then you are totally wrong you can chech that for K3 first day is 20.5(18.8 hindi only ) cr and by RR 25.5 all version ok check on wiki

  • KRISHH 3
    176+53=229+13=242
176 NETT 242 GROSS 13 DUBBED JUST JOKING
RELAX MAN IF TARAN CAN MAKE RECORD HE CAN BREAK ALSO BUT SAY MR ROSHAN 500 CR HOW BCOZ FOR GROSS ONLY THEATRICAL REVENUE NOT OTHERS RIGHT INDICINE

  • BOI reduced their own figures every week to keep its collection below YJHD.
first week earlier report 123.47crore( reduced to 122.07)
second week 45.06 crore( reduced to 42.15 ). After two weeks BOI figure was 168.5…
According to them K3 collected 7+ crores in its third weekend but they shown their figures after 15 days as 172 crores…(3 cr less).. BOI is fake

  • According to BOI first weekend collection is 49.5 crore only, which is only 33% occupancy… even if it was pre dewali period, occupancy was around 60%. BOI itself said k3 had a good start, then how come such low collection??? According to producer figure 72.8 cr, which is 60% occupancy over the weekend. we have to believe producers figure which looks realistic…
