  • My Name is Sami and I am impressed with the film

Not many times do we get to see a film as subtely researched as this, Karan Johar has always been the NRI loving director who to me could only produce soppy movies. His last film Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna, was an unqualified debacle. With My Name is Khan, his directing career has truly taken off.

My name is Khan starts off being a documentary, and ends as an experience.

Rizvaan Khan, an Indian autistic man from Bohlivali, moves to San Francisco after his mothers death. Here he meet he meets Mandia, he falls in love with her and they get married. All is well until 9/11 and tragedy strikes. Rizvaan then sets out on a journey to meet the USA president and inform him that he, Rizvaan, is not a terrorist.

    The perfromaces:

SRK is what the film hinges on, no understatement given the films name. SRK stands out from the rest in the film and carries the narrative, however he is not exceptional, but I will give credit where it is due, this is the best performace of his career.
The performace is by an actor who is not who is not known for great acting, he is more of a unique superstar and has taken the solo title of one for many years bar Swades and Chak De! India in recent times. But his performance here will go some way into making him into a blend of both superstar and versatile acting qualities, titles which have only ever been held by Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan currently. Its clear that SRK has observed Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man, nothing wrong in this as Hoffman is an oscar winning actor.
SRK has done obvious research into his role, the stilleto like delivery of lines and repitition of words, the fascination of one particular toy (in this case stones), the fear of new places, angry people and sounds and in particular the constant fear of yellow are all conveyed well by him. All in all an award winning performace by the lead actor and he may get some awards he ACTUALLY DESERVES next year.

Kajol is good but a bit predictable, however she plays her role well, her pain when tragedy strikes is exceptional.

The young boy playing Sameer is a bit fake, his accent goes from being Indian to American (like Jamal in Slumdog, replace American with British) his performance is acceptable though.

Zarina Wahab: is what every Muslim mother should be, completely religous but also secular in her beliefs.

Jimmy Shergill: Acceptable, essays the role of a non extermist but religous Muslim, the younger brother of Rizwan Khan.

Vinay Pathak: Does very well to convey the plight of Hindus that suffer on a daily basis because of there same skin colour to radical muslims.

Why it works: It is neither Anti-American nor is it a form of Islamic propoganda, rather it delivers a unique blend of all the global viewpoints on terrorism (a hindu who suffers racism due to ignorance, black people who are secular after 9/11, a sikh man who no longer wears his turban due to similarities to Afghanis etc) and also shows that Americans are not purposefully ignorant, they react like any other human beings to what is around them, they too have humane feelings.
Rizvan is not someone who cares about what others do around him, a biproduct of being an autistic, the film is seen through his eyes, and you feel compelled to share his worries, trials and happiness. I myself shed a tear when he talks about his son in a Church.

    Scenes to watch out for:

The mosque scene: this brought tears to my eyes in the way in which it realistically portrayed what SOME Muslim clerics are like today, as a muslim myself this was a scene i identifed with.

The restaurant scene: In which Rizvaan Khan meets a non-religous muslim couple, the man is conservative and when Rizwan talks about praying namaaz, the man backs off saying “Namaaz? here? mate you should know that certain things arent done around others”, to wich Rizvaan replies in a very simple minded way “Namaaz should not be prayed according to how other perceive it, it should be prayed as an intention to praise god and therefore you should not care what other think”. The same goes for all other religions and there prayers.

Rizvans speech in the Church: that fact that language is no barrier in expressing your love for someone else.

A touching scene in which Rizvan asks why Mandira is staring at him.

    The climax.

    Scenes to have 40 winks:

The scene where Rizvaan gives Zakhat to 9/11 victims, factually incorrect, Zakhat can only be given to MUSLIMS who are not blood related, victims of 9/11 are from every religion.

Hurricane scene: The scene involving the hurricane and the church being destroyed does nothing for the film other than increase the length.

    Cinematography: Brilliant

Dialogue : Acceptable, some cheesy with some exceptional, evens out.

Script: Well written, will commend Shibani for her coverage of all the global viewpoints, exactly what Kurbaan and New York didn’t do.

So is the movie like New York and Kurbaan?: No, the only common aspect, and I’ll echo Nauman here, is that Johar is involved in the film. Kurbaan and New York where about Radical Muslims and the treatment they RIGHTLY receive by American authorities, My name is Khan is not.

Whats sad about this film is that it takes a disabled man to see what normal people cannot, that humanity should stick together in the these harsh times rather than go against each other on the grounds of race, religion and physical disabilites.

4/5…..See it, the film is a subtle message on how humanity should bind together in times of adversity, ironically what the Shiv Sena are against. You will also be enterntained by the antics of Rizvan thoughout the film.

p.s @ hina: the film is defintely not anti-Islam, where the hell have u got this from??? The Islamic nature of the film is precisely why the Shiv Sena are currently against it, they are anti muslim and it is being clealry shown, my worry is that India will reduced to the divide it one was because of these mini hitlers.

  • The movie itself was worth waiting for ..especially if you have seen KKHH a million times and couldn’t wait to see the chemistry between SRK and Kajol. Karan Johar is known to make great movies so one will not be disappointed when watching the movie..However this depends on what mood one is in..If you watch it with the sole purpose of being entertained..yes it is worth a one time watch. If you go expecting it to be another Kurbaan or New York then your whole perspective can hinder your judgement of MNIK. Like it or not we have heard this story before.

The story itself is pretty basic and has a few subplots. It is the way the story is told and the way it has been directed superbly by Karan Johar that makes it interesting. The first half in my opinion is better than the second as I found the second to be a little long and drawn.

What made the movie worthwhile: The acting by the stars SRK and Kajol..and the rest of the crew. I honestly didn’t think SRK could pull it off but he did. Overacting in just certain scenes but on the whole good. Kajol was her usual self..great. Karan Johar’s direction, scenery, and background music..all good.

What didn’t work for me: Some silly scenes like the church scene. The floods etc..Too much melodrama which is ok in some movies but if SRK and Karan Johar are counting on submitting this to the Oscars then this could work against it. I only watch movies again and again if the movie is good BUT the music is excellent.. in this case I will be watching it only once. Also found it too westernised….(Being NRI’s.. there are days when doesn’t feel like watching a hollywood movie ..and would rather watch something like Welcome to Sajjanpur.)..

The audience reaction in Fiji: Cinema was half full like Dulhaa mil gaya..I expected it to be full. This will probably change in the next few days as people love SRK here.

People laughed and didn’t walk out of the theatre .However some seemed to find a comical aspect to SRK’s disorder ( always a risk when you make a movie like this). Funnily…the most applause was heard at our intermission when the trailer of Kites was shown…

I would give it 3 out of five ..not more…Pardon me for being an idiot ….but theres no way this will beat 3 idiots..and………. honestly… believe it or not MNIK!!!

  • I will watch mnik tommorow , hopefully i will like the movie and rate it 5 out of 5.

well , SRK is also VEER as he stands firmly.

  • as you know i was not very fond of srk and karan and said a lot of negative things but i am getting a feeling that we should not post fake reviews without watching the film the film may or may not be very entertaining but 2stars i dont think so. i will watch 12.30 show in delhi then will just put forward my ratings because i am not a critic so no review. tell you things from the point of audiencs reaction

The Shiv Sena activists went on a rampage in Delhi, by vandalising the Satyam Theatre in Janakpuri, Delhi, where SRK’s movie, ‘My Name Is Khan’ was slated for a release today. The Bajrang Dal activists in Ahmedabad tore up the posters of the movie.

Vandalism was also reported from the Akshardham area of east Delhi, Prashant Vihar and Sarita Vihar where protestors reportedly shouted anti-Shahrukh slogans and burnt movie posters.

This came as a rude shock to Delhiites as the cash registers were ringing in the capital for the Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol starrer throughout Wednesday. Most cinema halls and multiplex chains had opened their ticket windows for the film on Monday and have been receiving a positive response ever since despite the brouhaha in Mumbai over the film’s release.

The Delhi Police have decided to tighten the security across all theatres in Delhi in the wake of protest by Shiv Sena.

  • In a jolt to Karan Johar and Shah Rukh Khan, all theaters and multiplexes in Gujarat have decided not to screen Shahrukh Khan’s film ‘My name is Khan at the behest of the Bajrang Dal and VHP.

All theaters and multiplexes in Gujarat have decided not to book any ticket of Shahrukh Khan’s film ‘My name is Khan’ in advance.

According to reports coming out, Shri Ashiwn Patel, Ahmedabad based leader of Vishwa Hindu Parishad in Gujarat, when contacted by the media, pointed out that Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad have stopped screening of films even in past successfully. “Even this time, the film: My name is Khan would not be allowed to be screened in Gujarat.”

Umesh Engineer, leader of Shiv Sena in Gujarat, on Thursday thanked Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal to join the agitation against Shahrukh Khan’s pro-Pakistan stand and his film. Umesh said the Shiv Sainiks would obey Shri Bala Saheb Thakrey’s order and would stop screening of My name is Khan with whatever strength they have in Gujarat.

  • @Mn ..I dun like SRK as a person.N I am not that kind of a person who brings personal disliking into gud cinema.N I although work wid Nauman my point of view is always different 4 him.MNIK has got gud reviews but I know i won’t like this movie m just curious y this movie is so over-hyped.M still crazy about Veer.

Even if i have choice today I will go 4 Veer instead of MNIK.But SRK fanz bashed Veer all over Salman fanz need to behave in a better manner. After all we are fanz of a man with Golden Heart. If MNIK is a good movie let it do well.Even if it becomes BB i still won’t like shahrukh coz of his diplomacy but I will like the movie….

  • I am going to watch it on Saturday. I hope it does well, and exceed everyone’s expectations!
I will pray, that it becomes a super duper hit and break the records of 3 idiots too!
    Love U, SRK!

  • @ Hina
I think srk and salman both are very good human beings. I like both srk and salman but srk more. Srk is the real veer see how he stands firmly and bravely infront of that idiot shive sina. Why the hell r u saying this is anti islam, I think this is purely giving nice image of islam. I hope u will agree with me and start thinking from ur brain not from heart.
    @ Sami
Nice review. Infact very good. I agree with u whatever u said about humanity nd mnik.

  • hina thats a salman fan
but still srk never succeed in this movie

I will suggest SRK to have new movie
    “”MY GROUP IS SENA””
no doubt all time blockbuster no need publicity believe me )

    Dipin Sen where ru ????

  • @Ar ..I do things 4m heart like Salman Bahe..N it is Anti-Islamic I am a muslim I know my religion better.I dun wana comment more on religion here.Well Veer tu Salman hai coz he came outside n blasted critics can SRK come outside if he is dat Veer y he wants security?Tell me if he is dat afraid y he wants audience to risk life?Best thing would have been he should have shifted release date.N MPKK also suffered 4m this.Even Veer was stopped in Rajhastan.Dun mind if Shahrukh had used his heart today ppl would have respected him more. But he is a diplomat.

    @Mn …Yes Pure Salman fan…

  • lol…the thread is regarding mnik but here too people want to bring in the defeated warrior ..how silly..!!! arre that film is gone begone but such has been the failure of veer that the fans arein a pitiable state of shock!!!

  • Mind blowing film, nobody can be dreamt of in the role of shahrukh, he is awesome. Far better movie than 3 idiots including the idiot aamir

  • First ever Biggest opening of Karan’s & Srk’s MNIK till today:

Even at these situation film has made to collect apprx 2.75 cr all over india
from multiplex is possible to have 2 Cr and rest of 75 lakhs from single screen in one day

so srk fans time to make party after a huge opening of MNIK
it is clean to break a record of his last film Dulha Mil Gaya, Billu, ,,,,
    dont worry guys
badi badi desho me aisi choti choti bathein hoti hai ..
    Hmhhmmmhhmm…

  • MNIK is good film. After the previous KANK it is good run for KJ. But it is not that time what it was expected. there are some negative part which does not make it outstanding. OK it can be recomonded, but not waaooo..

  • well well well no doubt the media loves SRK but the truth is this film is a drag n it will not be as huge as 3idiots never ever ever …..no one can be AAmir Khan …SRK still has to learn a lot all he does is the repeating roles with the same set of directors and who ever calls him sabka baap is a complete idiot ….no body is kisi ka baap there are good actors and there are outstanding actors aamir belongs to the later group …srk is ok not a bad actor but can not be compared to actors like Kamal Hasan and Aamir khan or Naseeruddin Shah …the dedication which aamir puts has it been seen ever i dont think so ….so lets not even go there who is a better actor….

  • its CRAPPPPPPPPPP… i dont understand y u guys are promoting this stupid muvi……
there is nothing real in this stroy.. 0-5% entertainment and 90-95% drama…. hahahahahahahaha…
boaring hai yaar… totally time waste… isse better option hai 3 idiots dobara dekh lo…
dont waste yr time & money.. & shahrukh hakloo deserve that panic.. he is over smart now a days… ;)
