One of the most anticipated trailers of the year was launched yesterday. There was no launch event or media interaction, but the makers decided to launch the trailer on the Star TV Network, followed by the internet (both at 8:57 PM yesterday).
The response, like every other ’much-awaited biggie’, was mixed. When the expectations are high, the chances of disappointing the audience is higher – and that seems to be the case with Ashutosh Gowarikar’s Mohenjo Daro too.
We asked 20 people in the trade (including theatre owners, distributors, trade veterans etc) for their feedback on the trailer. The response was mixed to negative – 5 of them said the trailer was ‘good’, 13 said it was average (under-whelming, disappointing, something missing were the words used) and the remaining 2 said poor. It needs to be pointed out that none of these people were in any which way associated with UTV, Hrithik Roshan or Ashutosh Gowariker. Opinions were from known and unbiased sources.
The audience response falls in mixed to good category. In our poll on Twitter, 36% people voted for ‘outstanding’, 20% voted for ‘good’, 25% voted for ‘average’ and 19% voted for ‘poor’. On Youtube, the percentage of people who have ‘liked’ the trailer is around 85% which is average. Usually, films that score 95% or more likes against dislikes is considered to be excellent, 90% or more is good, while anything less than 85% is average. (Read article: Trailer rating of 2016 films)
These are not the only two ways that we categorise the ‘audience response’. It’s a combination of many things which includes Twitter polls, Youtube likes vs dislikes ratio, feedback from real audience and even our own comments section (feedback from the known ‘neutral’ people is obviously given more importance).
For our own rating, we’d go with 7 on 10 for the trailer.
IndicineFBO: We start with 15.4 crore as the first day prediction for Mohenjo Daro. The film needed a strong trailer – which would’ve probably also made the makers of ‘Rustom’ think of averting a clash, but the response so far hasn’t really been overwhelmingly positive. Certainly not in the ‘Bajirao Mastani’ league, the trailer of which shifted the pre-release balance from a one-sided clash to an interesting one with Shah Rukh Khan’s Dilwale.
NOTE: The final IndicineFBO prediction is only made on the day before the release of the film (August 11th in Mohenjo Daro’s case). The FBO will change depending on the response to the music, song promos and other promotional activities. The music and the promos that follow will now be the key for Mohenjo Daro.

now that the trailer is out it is very clear that MD neither has the grandeur nor the story.. if poor vfx n fake n soulless sets were not enough u are put off by typical bollywood cliched love story as its main story.. n casting kabir bedi as the villian is a casting blunder.. the sets, the characters, the dialogues, the costumes, the body language u name it nothing makes u believe it is MD era.. if u call ur movie MD n fail to depict the era convincingly u have failed in the most important test n rest then fall like pieces.. for some my comment may seem harsh but I have said exactly wat I felt like seeing the trailer.. the trailer just didn’t deliver.. no goosebumps, no impact, no intriguing story.. it felt flat

I believe it will collect 18 cr on opening day.They should have put a war sequence and some powerful dialogue to make it universally appealing. Actually watched Games of Thrones Season 6 Episode 9 last day and it was best episode of 6 seasons with some top quality war scenes.Kamaal scenes the.Right after completing the episode I watched trailer thats why missed badly the scale and grandeur and battle scenes.
Completely agree with trailer rating but I think first day collection should be more compare to your fbo.I found first 60 sec pretty ordinary nd next 120sec was superb so overall my raring also lie around 7/10.
The best trailer in recent times were Fan and Bajirao Mastani. They were brilliant. I would rate them 9/10. I still remember that I was not impressed with almost anything from BM until the trailer came and it confirmed that BM is going to be a success.

Everybody calm down. Consider this 15+ crore opening prediction is just initial prediction and it will only go up as we approach to Aug 12th. It is just their prediction, they have also said it’s impossible to predict BO, especially before watching the movie. Maybe, they are underrating Hrithik’s stardom, but that doesn’t mean they are being biased against him, as they are only humans, too. Let’s be honest here, Bang Bang was released on a holiday, which usually adds up to 7 crore for big movies featuring top 4 superstar, and Haider was a smaller movie compared to Rustom. They have also taken opinions of small amount of trade experts, I’m seeing many distributors/trades posting great things about it on Twitter, but maybe Indicine couldn’t reach out to them.
If Bang Bang did 25 crore on holiday, then 18+ crore opening is very much possible for MohenjoDaro. Remember BM did 180 crore with 12 crore opening, then we can still expect 200 crore if it gets similar response. If Rustom gets postponed, then 25+ crore opening is possible on non holiday, which would be similar to Aamir and Raju’s ‘PK’, which went on to become highest grosser of all time. It will only come down to content and response, all the negativity will be vanished once the movie releases like BM last year, which had to face massive pre release negative campaign.
I’m sure they will increase the prediction if music is well received. Krrish 3 did 25 crore during pre Diwali period with the worst music response in last 10 years and did 35+ crore on its 4th day which is enough to prove Hrithik’s stardom, but it was a solo release and had enough screen size. At the end of the day, I believe it’s opening will depend upon its screen size. If it gets 3000+ screens with higher number of shows compared to Bang Bang, then 20+ crore opening will be very likely.
My prediction: 18+ crore in current scenario, 20+ crore if music is well received, 25+ crore as solo release. I know Dilwale was huge, but MohenjoDaro isn’t a small film either.

I can understand disappointment of some hrithik’s fans with this prediction. I was also expecting more. But I think Indicine has done an honest analysis here. It is not about what Indicine wishes the figures to be but what they expect it to earn keeping in view the initial reactions of the trailer.
Ironically many people in social media accuse Indicine to be a pro Hrithik website and here some are accusing it to be anti Hrithik. At times I feel theirs is a thankless job.
And finally this FBO will definitely go up. I remember Fan’s initial FBO was below 16 cr which if I remember correctly went up to 21 cr plus just before release date. So MD’s FBO will surely move up too. I am hoping the music becomes a big hit as its role gets important even more now.
At those who are saying recovery will be difficult. Budget of MohenjoDaro isn’t that big if you exclude Hrithik’s fee which usually happens with every Khan movies. Sometimes, they take profit share, sometimes amount of satellite rights.
If we suppose amount of satellite+music rights were given to Hrithik, which is 60 crore. Then, cost of rest of production will be around 70 crore. Which (along with cost of P&A), I believe, will be easily recovered from its overseas business alone. It can do 100+ crore overseas if Bang Bang did 80 crore. Now, its domestic collections will be only bonus as far as recovery is concerned. So, it’s already on profit.
Indicine has done good analysis.hritik fan its clashing with another superatar n akshay will rarely fail with rustom as he is best in this genre.15cr is quite fair on non holiday n clash.movie can collect max 25cr on non holiday 15(md) 10(rustom)
Yesterday when I said that the trailer is poor, Hrithik fans said I am jealous, but trust me guys I am not that was my honest and unbiased reaction…..I like the Mohanjodaro Poster very much so I appreciate that, but this trailer is really very poor, I give 6/10

Now a days big opening is not a key for a film to be a success…a buzz can give the boost to movies for first weekend and after that its all about the content to work which decides the fate of a film…i think MD will have an opening of 17-18 crores and a weekend of around 55-60 crores…Now lets see the trailer of rustom and songs of both the films…i think a week before we will have a clear picture..
