Mohenjo Daro Trailer: Trade, Audience Response and IndicineFBO

One of the most anticipated trailers of the year was launched yesterday. There was no launch event or media interaction, but the makers decided to launch the trailer on the Star TV Network, followed by the internet (both at 8:57 PM yesterday).

The response, like every other ’much-awaited biggie’, was mixed. When the expectations are high, the chances of disappointing the audience is higher – and that seems to be the case with Ashutosh Gowarikar’s Mohenjo Daro too.

We asked 20 people in the trade (including theatre owners, distributors, trade veterans etc) for their feedback on the trailer. The response was mixed to negative – 5 of them said the trailer was ‘good’, 13 said it was average (under-whelming, disappointing, something missing were the words used) and the remaining 2 said poor. It needs to be pointed out that none of these people were in any which way associated with UTV, Hrithik Roshan or Ashutosh Gowariker. Opinions were from known and unbiased sources.

The audience response falls in mixed to good category. In our poll on Twitter, 36% people voted for ‘outstanding’, 20% voted for ‘good’, 25% voted for ‘average’ and 19% voted for ‘poor’. On Youtube, the percentage of people who have ‘liked’ the trailer is around 85% which is average. Usually, films that score 95% or more likes against dislikes is considered to be excellent, 90% or more is good, while anything less than 85% is average. (Read article: Trailer rating of 2016 films)

These are not the only two ways that we categorise the ‘audience response’. It’s a combination of many things which includes Twitter polls, Youtube likes vs dislikes ratio, feedback from real audience and even our own comments section (feedback from the known ‘neutral’ people is obviously given more importance).

For our own rating, we’d go with 7 on 10 for the trailer.

IndicineFBO: We start with 15.4 crore as the first day prediction for Mohenjo Daro. The film needed a strong trailer – which would’ve probably also made the makers of ‘Rustom’ think of averting a clash, but the response so far hasn’t really been overwhelmingly positive. Certainly not in the ‘Bajirao Mastani’ league, the trailer of which shifted the pre-release balance from a one-sided clash to an interesting one with Shah Rukh Khan’s Dilwale.

NOTE: The final IndicineFBO prediction is only made on the day before the release of the film (August 11th in Mohenjo Daro’s case). The FBO will change depending on the response to the music, song promos and other promotional activities. The music and the promos that follow will now be the key for Mohenjo Daro.

  • even though i didnt like the trailer i want the movie to be a success (and rustom too) because i want more movies like this and more directors to take a chance to make something as big ( doesnt need to be historical). best of luck
im sure indicine will change the prediction after music and one more trailer is released. so keep calm lol

  • btw @indicine what was the response to jodha akbar trailer and how was its opening??? just want 2 know because its a quite similar situation for hritik

  • i love the analysis indicine, balanced! Although m a huge Akshay kumar fan, I had made a point that i would see both in theatre ,after watching the trailer i wont want to waste my money, average trailer, average movie!

  • @Babaji you chamaleon finally showed your true colors because joker boy is clashing with HR. Shame on you. Wasn’t you tye one who used to bark things like hrithik is your favorite along with joker boy and bla bla bla? What happened now? Actually your true colors were exposed 2 months ago when you tried to show joker boy bigger star than hrithis in Mohenjo daro stills article. Shame on you old man!!!

  • @indicine u got it wrong this time….it ll b 20cr+ with or without clash n i know u ll b very glad if ur prediction goes wrong n hope u guys change it prior to release?

  • One suggestion for you….you should predict your so called FBO after the music release of every movie…don’t u think that songs can boost the opening day collection?

  • @indicine no need to be harsh to abhishek hrithikian. He perfectly makes sense. If you really want to be neutral and fair than why did you praise crappy Sultan trailer over the top and did the chamchagiri of salman fans? All those fake over the top huppla like 4 days to go for the biggest trailer, then 2 days and then 4 hours and bla bla bla none sense. At least MD trailer is still not as crap as crappy torturous Sultan trailer which was fake and over the top nonsensical trailer.

  • @rocky…I’m actually calculating how much money you have wasted already(If you’re a true akki fan)…Boss, It’s Entertainment, Houseful 3, Singh is bling,Joker….my only point is that don’t try to show your so called “neutrality”

  • 15+ crore opening on a working day while also clashing with a movie featuring a ‘superstar’ won’t be bad. 20+ crore was the cards if Aug 12th was holiday despite clash.

  • BANG BANG ! :: 27 Cr+
(Clash, Shaahid fans are against Hrithik, Crap songs, Nil promotion, All Khans fans unit and support Shaahid film to put down Hrithik films, trailer not liked due to clash negativity)

    MOHENJO DARO :: 30 Cr+
(Clash, Akshay fans are against Hrithik, All Khans fans unit and support Akshay film to put down Hrithik again, Trailer not liked due to clash again, if songs turn melodious)

  • Baahubali comparison made me write this comment….
    Flaws Of Baahubali…
    1) How can a lady flow in water for long time with same hand position lifting baby. (oops no logic found)
    2) Mountain Climbing scenes were so laughable.. Many will agree with me. (Must be spirit of Baahubali helped him)
    3) Tatoos on Tammana and prabhas body… Painting under water(seriously??)
    4) Snowstorm sequence was poorly shown(oops no one is complaining)
    5) One small rock saves baahubali and another man from falling ( when bhallaldev leave rope to kill baahubali.)
    6) that cutter of Bhallaldeva used in War as well as that Gada spring lol.. …

All these factors make movie childish and illogical according to so called intellectuals but still movie worked and did huge business bcz of Directors vision was great… He believed in product, he shiwn some over the top scenes but that got neglected in thw the end bcz of greatly shot war scenes… So

In the same manner Mohenjo Daro director has a vision in his mind abt Indus valley Civilization world and he simply set his story there… For gid sake he is not making Documentary on Mohenjodaro or Super hero movie full of CGI and VFx…
He simply want to show story of Revenge drama with action and romance with Indus vally as a backdrop.
So please Respect his vision, wait till movie release, go watch movie after great reviews and witness story of a Man set in Mohenjo Daro Era.

Hussshhh…. I was always a silent Indicine visitor but these comparisons and Hates made me comment this stuff.
(By the way I had watched Baahubali 3 times in theaters and I lovedd itt….)

  • Plus this is the initial FBO prediction and I am expecting it to go up as release date approaches. Music will have to play a big role.

@ Indicine: When is the Rustom trailer expected to release?

  • Saying ‘something was missing’ is exactly result of sky high expectations, I’m actually surprised by number of people who are comparing it with Baahubali and think it has to have Baahubali like VFX to be good. I don’t expect any unbiased critic/fan to find it ‘bad’.

I’m actually happy by the trailer that it was simple (did not reveal important scenes) and does not have heavy VFX, which would have pushed its story to 2nd place.

Teasers and trailers of Krrish 3, ETT, Bang Bang, Dhoom 3, were all amazing and showed probably way too much, and result was audience missed that ‘surprise factor’ in the movie after leaving the cinema hall, result was mixed response by audience despite big box office numbers thanks to curiosity and star power.

Meanwhile, teaser/trailers of PK, Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Lagaan, Jodhaa Akbar were simple, there was nothing extraordinary in them, yet we all know how much audience loved those movies in theater. MohenjoDaro trailer falls in this category. Some people were expecting it to like Baahubali, they found something was missing. I expected it to be on the lines of Jodhaa Akbar and Lagaan, and I wasn’t disappointed at all.

Clash or no clash, this movie will have a big opening with high occupancy (collections will depend on screen count & no. of shows), but the main thing will be public response, the word-of-mouth publicity. I have faith in Ashutosh Gowariker and Hrithik Roshan, especially in this genre.

  • Hrithik fans better worry about the content of the film not the 3 minute trailer.
If the content clicks, then it will do huge biz
But if it doesn’t click then it will only recover costs.
And never trust indicine for predicting only 15 crore lol
Indicine had also predicted 24 crore for housefull 3 and everyone knows the result.

  • @ Indicine…. Balanced prediction though you hv underrated HR stardom a bit… Still due to negatively thanx to our so called intellectuals prediction looks ok…
All Hrithikians please don’t get disappointed… Don’t loose hopes…I think its good to be underdog now than High Expectations.
So just be calm don’t abuse any fans, just promote our movie in good way. Just ignore trolls.

  • Dear indicine…if hope you’ll reply to my comment….What were you expecting from the trailer?….and What did you like and didn’t like in the trailer…..forget the trade and audience…give your own review

  • Very good analysis of #Indicine. This article is a big lesson for all those idiots who have been going gaga over Jaadooboy’s shivering!!!

  • I just hope the movie turns out to be good . I have huge expectations from it . The disappointment is mostly because of comparison from Baahubali which has set the bar too high . But i guess Baahubali also didnt had huge hype before its release , so anything can happen .

  • If promos and music/songs are well received, it can do close to 20+ crore with clash on a working Friday. It’s all about building hype at the time of release. I think 15 crore is minimum it should do on Aug 12th, music will decide how much it could add to it. It won’t have any chartbuster, though, music should be similar to Jodhaa Akbar as well, i.e., mostly soulful tracks with 1 or 2 powerful tracks.

  • Nice article, once again indicine. And quite agreeable analysis. Honestly, when I started watching the trailer it seemed that the background and the way the houses were made was like that of Egypt during the Pharaoh era. It certainly does not look like the way historians have described it could be in mohenjo daro. Also, a major thing to point out is that sewing needles were in scarcity during that period and only the kings and his royal subjects had a few dresses which were sewn. Almost everyone back then just wrap themselves with clothes or animal skin. There is no authenticity in this movie and not much thought has been put by the makers on how Mohenjo daro actually was. I think Ashutosh Gowarikar is a kind of a guy who either gets it so good that he makes a masterpiece or go so bad that he ends up as a disaster. Lagaan, Swadesh and Jodhaa Akbar was amazing and Khele him jee Jaan se and what’s your rashee were quite pathetic. Let’s hope that the story of the movie (which feels inspired from the ten commandments) and acting of hrithik bring this movie in the league of lagaan and others.

  • Some people are predicting HGOTY, ATHG, 400cr, 500cr and blah blah blah for MD. After reading this article I can say that the only hope is papa’s calculator to be fulfilled their dreams!!!

  • ashutosh is good in storytelling so thats not a problem if content finds appreciation then its a sure shot 200 crore member.if failed to find apppreciation then it will be wrapped up between 120 to 150 crore.fingers crossed

  • @indicine What was the opening of JA in 2008 and the screen count. If we extrapolate that linearly would it be 15.4 as you are saying or more?

  • Indicine 15.4 cr really i mean really…. it will be near about double to this And don’t spread negativety by influecing people by counting only negatives against so many positives. if u count only negatives it will be countless in everything forget about movies only . you have given sultan trailer rating 8 which has no sense at all whats special in it can u plz tell us . it seems u have some problem with Hrithik when it comes to Khans vs Hrithik. This article breaches d trust i have with ur website.

  • @Indicine team
    very good analysis.
How will u compare it with Sultan.
has Sultan buzz decreased in the last week?
How much are the chances of increase in buzz?waiting

  • It is really pathetic to see a trailer like Sultan getting too good responses and Mohenjodaro getting mixed to good responses!!
@indicine:Did you seriously find Sultan trailer better than MohenjoDaro?

Well, those who found it average or good come under the category of sensible people!!

How can someone use a word like pathetic, crap, bad etc? Obviously it was not!
Look at the guy @Rangil! Lol.. Hrithik’s voice is pathetic? Heroine is pathetic? Kabir Bedi is pathetic? Lol.. Kuch toh sensibly analyse karo yaar!

Pooja Hegde is looking so beautiful and HR is looking quite impressive with his performance! Even what’s wrong with Kabir Bedi as the villain? He is roaring in the movie like a tiger, looking very powerful.

And vfx?? ROFL!! Vfx is never a huge concern when it comes to a movie like MohenjoDaro. It is neither a fiction nor a superhero a movie. U will find vfx in 3-4 scenes. Such films can be made even without vfx.
