Krrish 3 beats Chennai Express, sets single day record

Krrish 3With Krrish 3, the odds were stacked heavily against the Roshans. The music was the biggest disaster in recent times for any big-budget film, the song promos weren’t really impressive and the release date wasn’t ideal either. The inevitable and unfair comparisons with Hollywood superhero films meant that Krrish 3, made on a humongous budget, was one of the riskiest films ever produced.

But like with their earlier films like Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai, Koi Mil Gaya and Krrish.. the Roshans have reigned  supreme at the box office yet again!

Krrish 3 has destroyed the opening day business of Shahrukh Khan’s Chennai Express, thereby setting a new single day record. The film has collected Rs 35.91 crore on Monday, surpassing the previous record of Rs 33.12 crore set by Chennai Express on 9th August 2013.

In just 4 days, the Hrithik Roshan starrer has also joined the 100 crore club, the second fastest for any film. This is a massive achievement, considering the fact that Krrish 3 released during the pre-Diwali period. The record for the highest single day collections was set on the 4th day of release, when lakhs of people had already watched the film in theatre!

  • Friday – 25.2 crore
  • Saturday – 23.2 crore
  • Sunday – 24.3 crore
  • Monday – 35.91 crore (holiday)
  • Weekend Total – 108.61 crore (including Tamil and Telugu versions)

  • I dont have words, how happy i am today for hrithik roshan and krrish 3…….this the movie will break many more records in days to come…..hrithik is the no.1 actor in india now…..

  • @Zeeshan aka SRK Fanatic aka Crybaby : This one’s for you from your beloved site boxofficeindia.com

Krrish 3 set a new record for the highest single day collection ever as it collected around 31.50 crore nett in its Hindi version. The film set new daily collection highs in Delhi/UP, East Punjab, Rajasthan, CI and Bihar.

The other films to collect over 30 crore nett in a day are Ek Tha Tiger and Chennai Express and the record of Ek Tha Tiger in Mumbai remained intact as did the records of Chennai Express in Nizam/Andhra, Mysore and TNK.

The film scored better in North and Central markets because these areas underperformed over the Diwali period. Krrish 3 has now collected around 80.50 crore nett in its Hindi version and with a holiday in parts today it should have another big day today.

The first week of the film can be around 120-125 crore nett and the film now has a chance of crossing the 200 crore nett mark.

  • @zeeshan

I dont know what you believe and frankly, i dont care. But i believe in MAJORITY. When each and every news channel, each and every website, each and every trade analyst is quoting the exact figures as mentioned in this article, I believe them.

And trust me, Im not a Roshan fan.

The one exception is BOI, which is a shitty outdated website, where the figures are different in case of each and every movie. Im sorry boss, but in this case, one rotten apple cannot be allowed to spoil the entire bunch.

My heartiest cograts to the entire team of Krrish 3.

  • For all SRK fanatics and crybabies who have been whining crocodile tears about manipulation since day 1(funny that SRK fans are now speaking of manipulation),this one’s in fond memory of your favorite manipulative star :

“Krrish 3 set a new record for the highest single day collection ever as it collected around 31.50 crore nett in its Hindi version. The film set new daily collection highs in Delhi/UP, East Punjab, Rajasthan, CI and Bihar.

Now go ahead and cry some more…or wait for the k-k-k kon artist’s next fake, manipulative aka (b)Ra.1,Con-2 etc

  • my final gift to hr fans please read this amazing true review of k3 u all will love it

MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD … DONT READ IF HAVENT WATHCHED D MOVIE make ur day great by watching it first …….n then read d review…..enjoy hr fans…

    The Preamble:

Watching Krrish 3 turned out to be quite a different experience than one would anticipate. Krrish (2006) had hardly worked as a film overall, in-spite of some entertaining and adrenaline-pumping action sequences. Hrithik Roshan was impressive in the avatar of a masked superhero; primarily due to his physicality and body language [[ even though he was supported by some atrocious special effects ]].

This time around, Rakesh Roshan has redeemed himself beyond all expectations. While the film is visually stunning, it is also a rare, true-blue Superhero movie from Bollywood. At the same time, there is also a lot more beneath the cosmetics.

The movie is a definitive fusion; a multi-layered amalgamation at various levels. Analyzing it feels liking peeling off onion rings – layer by layer – to get to the core. Fortunately, the exercise is a helluva fun-ride, just like the movie is …

The Skin – An Amalgamation of Superhero Ideologies

Krrish 3 is an unique combination of various superhero ideologies – admirably Indianized by Rakesh Roshan in a confluent manner.

When artist/writer John Bryne relaunched Superman for DC in the mid-eighties, the redefining story arc (titled Man Of Steel) witnessed Clark Kent leaving Smallville to spend some years traveling around the world – helping mankind. The recent Man Of Steel (2013) movie briefly touched upon this – but Rakesh Roshan does a better job at executing this idea. In the first act of the movie, Krrish is using his superpowers to help civilians in Mumbai from accidents, natural calamities and criminals. Krrish 3 successfully establishes our superhero as equivalent to the idea of helping-those-in-need.

Bryne later landed Clark in Metropolis, where he met Lois Lane for the first time while saving a plane from crash landing due to technical malfunction. In an introductory scene of Krrish 3, our superhero pays homage to that incident – he saves a plane from crash landing by supporting the faulty suspension system on his broad shoulders.

The tribute to Superman does not end here. The climactic fight between Kaal and Krrish (superbly executed) reminds one of the Man of Steel (2013) movie climax. Since Krrish 3 was already shot and canned by the time Man Of Steel released, plagiarism is unlikely to be a valid charge here.

However, the duel is better conceptualized in Krrish 3. Zack Snyder went berserk and destroyed half of Metropolis during the insane fight between Supes and Zod. Here, it is refreshing to see Krrish being more concerned about preventing such devastation than fighting the villain – even when Kaal takes the advantage of such noble intentions to beat the pulp out of him.

Also, Roshan does not shy away from displaying the tricky down-side of such a moral stance. Krishna Mehra gets repeatedly fired from his odd jobs as a consequence of his vigilantism. Yet, he takes it in his stride and keeps helping others. Krrish does not even hesitate to let few storeys of a building collapse on top of him – in order to save an infant’s life.

Krishna perhaps represents the labors of the urban, working middle-class much better than Clark does. Superman has a convenient day job of being a reporter, allowing him to simultaneously do his vigilantism and yet keep his job. But Roshan has fortunately leaned more towards the Marvel school-of-thought about humanizing the alter-ego of the superhero, ala Spiderman. But unlike Spidie, Krrish already had his love life sorted out in the previous installment. Sam Riami’s Spiderman trilogy wasted too much screen time on Peter Parker’s romantic inclinations.

The main ideology behind Superman is about an immigrant’s struggle to adapt in a foreign land. Quite difficult a proposition – since he comes from an immensely superior and advanced planet of Krypton ( thanks to the ego of of his Jewish creators). He is often referred to as the ‘Son of God’ – conforming to the popular sci-fi notion that Gods are Aliens. On the other hand, Krrish believes that being human is his primary strength.

The Krrish lineage has an enhanced DNA, thanks to the blessings of an alien (The Blue God?) who was showcased in Koi Mil Gaya (2003). The continuous appearance of Lord Krishna’s idol in this franchise, hints at the Indian mythology of Vishnu’s cyclic avatars – born in different eras in order to save mankind. The story-line has Krishna Mehra being born when the evil scientist Dr Arya was plotting large-scale devastation by building a time-traveling computer in Krrish (2006) and commiting more evil acts (as revealed in this movie). Apart from the obvious name, the mask of Krrish is also designed after Lord Krishna’s sudarshan chakra.

Roshan also fuses some of the ideology behind Batman into Krrish 3. The orphaned Bruce Wayne has quite a few father figures to guide him – Alfred Pennyworth, Lucius Fox and Jim Gordon. The father-son relationship between Rohit and Krishna Mehra forms the backbone of Krrish 3, which successfully strikes the right emotional chords.

The Batman ideology propagates the power of scientific innovations and mental deductions. This is also a recurring theme in Krrish 3 – making it more of a science-fiction movie than a superhero one. Almost every main character here is a scientist – be it Rohit Mehra or Kaal. More screen time is spent inside labs than in action sequences. The science is over simplified for the masses to an extent of making it banal – although it deals with complex ideas like genetic engineering and bio-energy conversion. Overall, Krrish 3 is a shout-out for scientific advancement more than anything else.

The film also smoothly amalgamates anti-racist and anti-fascist tones from the X-Men franchise. Kaal – a genetically enhanced supervillain, believes that manvaars (mutants) are superior to humans. He aims to eliminate mankind and to establish a Fascist regime of his own. Vivek Oberoi simply nails this young Magneto-like role and performs even better than Michael Fassbender in First Class ( this is coming from a Fassbender fan).

Roshan surely got the Superhero basics well covered here. But that is only the superficial skin of this movie. Lets advance to the next layer …

  • indicine do u think chennai express record will be broken because next week ram leela is coming out and will affect a movie a lot and plus tommorow is non holiday so collections will drop more then 50 percent

  • @ Hatred New Year: I know, your BP has gone high. This is the beginning 1,2,3,4 get on the dance floor on the super success of Krissh, smashed the highest day record of CE by 10%.

  • Whoever doubted the stardom of hrithik should think twice.

Congrats once again for no one but Rakesh Roshan to be so bold to take such huge risk.

I saw the movie yesterday and here is my view

    Story – Average
    Music – ok
Perf – Hro and Kangana outstanding, esp. Kangana, from the first scene itself she keeps your attention fixed :), Priyanka has limited role, but did justice to it and looked surprisingly fresh. Vivek is cool

Vfx – the most imp asp of the movie is top notch, esp the aeroplane scene is stunning. Only disappointment is the Kaal’s suit made of scrap in the end and all the rhino man, cheetah women are simply waste. Again here graphics of Kangna’s transformation is top notch.

what i missed most was no light moments like koi mil gaya…

to sum it up, it cannot match the jadoo of koi mil gaya, but worth a watch for the effort.

as to record, k3 overall is better than ce any day, and with already in 100 cr looks all set to enter 200 cr, which is good news to the film industry business wise after a string of flops lately.

whether it breaks ce record or not, the biggest news is Superhero Movies have found acceptance in Bollywood and we see better and bigger movies in future.

  • That’s not a big deal its a favour of DIWALI as Indicine said 80% are hindus in India they will watch it anyhow they have nothing to do it. JUST A 2 CRORE…. WITH 4000 SCREENS… LoL.
Chennai express itself was a good record….. Far better from Cartoon Kids film…

  • at the time of ra.one, u considered only hindi ver. but for krissh 3 why r u including tamil/ telugu!!! if we take out tamil/telugu collections still krrish3 hasnt cross 100crore!! n by going through boi k3 will cross 100cr by end of week 1! plus there is something wrong with producers collection. how can diff. come with 25+ cr. after k3 complete its theatrical run, there will be diff of nearly 75cr!!!!
n btw CE would have collected 40cr with 4K screens with no PP!!!

  • congrats hro fans.k3 deserves it.but night and day is not a good movie and indian audience will reject this hollywood remake film.there is no chance for bang bang to remain in top 3 list next year.salman and srk ruled for 20 yrs and they will rule this decade also.

  • @Nilesh : That 10% added to Krish 3 because of Shah rukh Khan words go and watch krish 3 on his brith day and his company work favoured it. otherwise you can easily see the result of Hrithik up coming movies. Now all eyes are on big records if they do they will be NO.1
    7 days
    7 days overseas
    lifetime collection… PROFIT MARGIN…. lol….
Even indicine can’t save KRISH 3, whatever indicine DOSE between hrithink and srk fans…. Nothing gonna work…

  • The film has to make 150+ to breakeven and to be considered a hit. I do not buy the idea of hybrid Hollywood movies been touted as an Indian Superhero movie. Is there no hero in Indian mythology than can be created in SC-FI BW movies?

  • @nilesh which records?
Ce 1st day, 2nd day, 3rd day, weekned records are safe. 1st week records looks also safe. Highest single day 36cr easily broken by dhoom3 n jai ho, just wait n watch.

  • Amazing! Lived up to expectations. Congratulations HR and all his fans!
But please, refrain from using derogatory terms for SRK.
After all, Red Chillies created the vfx for Krrish:3,
And this merely is HR’s 2nd movie into the 100cr club, SRK has 4, one of which holds the record for the highest lifetime collections, no doubt Krrish:3 could break that record too, but it might not, and if it doesn’t a lot of HR fans will be disheartened. So enjoy the success and cease the comparisons. Have faith. :)

  • @indicine, what about its overseas collection? I think it should collect more than ce in overseas as ce was a typical bollywood masala movie where as krrish 3 has the grand look of a hollywood movie..
