Shahrukh Khan’s Happy New Year has fallen short of the lifetime collections of Salman Khan’s Kick, which remains the highest grosser in India this year. While Happy New Year was expected to beat Kick after a record-breaking opening day of Rs 44.97 cr, the film failed to show enough growth on its first Sunday and the drop on Monday meant that the Farah Khan film was always going to find it difficult to cross the 233 crore business of Kick.
In hindsight, the battle for the top grosser of the year could have been a lot closer if Shahrukh Khan had decided to release his film on the Diwali holiday (23rd October). The film lost out on business in the South and other parts of India which do well even on Diwali puja day because of holidays. Last year, Krrish 3 released 3 days before Diwali and still managed to set a record on the day after Diwali – which is considered to be the best day for business. The Post-Diwali holiday collections would have probably been a little lower than Rs 44.97 crore, but the previous day business could have been anywhere between 20-25 cr, which isn’t a bad start considering Diwali pooja.
While Diwali is still a great period to release films, Eid and Christmas weekends are probably better for film business as films tend to sustain better after a good opening.
Overall, the Kick vs Happy New Year comparison once again proves that star-power is judged based on the opening that a film gets. After the initial hype subsides, the content completely takes over. Kick found more appreciation amongst the masses, which is the reason why it sustained well even after a good opening week. In fact, the second week business makes it obvious – Happy New Year collected Rs 35.87 crore with 3 holidays (including Sunday), whereas Kick collected Rs 51.01 crore with just one holiday on Sunday – a difference of Rs 15.14 crore in week 2! Pretty much sums it up, doesn’t it?

First of all don’t judge just the indian collection of the films. If you look at international collection, Happy new year beats Kick by a distance too. Srk don’t get much appreciation in India but still managed to break the opening day record by a distance. And Kick was released before Eid so was bound to do well and collect more in its 2nd week due to that fact. Also worldwide collection Happy new year is set to bet kick worldwides lifetime collection. But some media and indian people who just hate SRK just come up with collection in just India. Farah Khan whose last directed movie was Tees Mar Khan one of the crappest and biggest flop and not a lot of of people expected this to do any wonders even when trailer was released their was negativity and word of bad mouth by so many people. And when movie released same think it had so much negative bad of mouth but most audience did enjoy it but media and some critics were criticising it. But who would expected a Farah Khan movie after debacle Tees Mar Khan to comeback with a 200crore movie. Salman all these years having been making such trash masala movies dabang, wanted, ready, bodyguard, ek tha tiger, jai ho and kick. All mindless masala movies and never gets criticised by media, critics and most Indians but as soon as Srk made 2 masala movies everyone abusing him. In India only masala movies work expect 3 idiots which was indeed a great movie and the only deserved 200 crore movie. Srk showed with chennai express how even he can break records by making a masala movie which indians love. Just full of nonsense. Now Happy new year making over 200 crore and so much internationally despite it’s director who made a crap movie previously. I seriously myself didn’t expect it to make 200 crore as it was directed by farah and after tees mar Khan really thought it would do average business as no one likes her type movies but this one was quite entertaining.
And I’m not a srk fan or a Salman hater. I like both actors and amir Khan too but some people go well overboard with some comments and come up with crap just because they done like a actor.
Dhoom 3. Kick. Chennai express and all the 200 crore club films are average movies except 3 idiots. But indians make average masala movies record breaking and don’t bother to go watch films that are good.
Srk needs to stop these crappy old masala movies and go back and make serious movies. Let Salman carry on with this masala crap. Time for roles as devdas, chak de, swades, baazigar, ddlj, kkhh, khkh, veer zaara, my name is Khan. Such films where great acting skills are required and for which he has got recognition and awards for and for which has made him a superstar internationally as they were decent movies and in which excellent acting skills were required. No wonder he hasn’t been winning any major awards for a while now with this masala crap as these movies just requires actors to act stupid nothing more.
Kick released a week before Eid. So it used the full weekend and then the 2 holidays on Tuesday & Wednesday. Happy New Year released a day after diwali and had a mind blowing weekend. Yes, it did fall on the weekdays but that’s normal for any big film.
Where were Salman fans when Jai Ho was knocked out in couple of weeks. Ask Salman to release films without Eid and we will see how much stardom he enjoys.
All being said…. lets wait for Fan & Raaes and you all will know what SRK is worth….
Salman entered in to 200 crore club just few months back..whereas SRK has been there since last year. SRK did 2 back to back 200 crores films which is a milestone.
Salman’s Jai Ho did 115 crores lifetime which was even less than Jab tak hai Jaan & Ra.One which released with Son of Sardar.
we all enjoyed happy new year… we knew this is a typical bollywood masala entertainer. We all have seen om shanti om and we kind of know what farah khan makes. I agree SRK is not doing the same kind of cinema he used to do years back but that’s how the industry has changed. Its all about who makes more money at the box office. We have seen every big actor be it salman, akshay,hrithik or aamir doing movies for masses and not the critics. We have this 100 crore club now which we never heard of back in the years of ddlj and kuch kuch hota hai. If you have to entertain the masses… this is what you got to do. I will still say that I loved the movie not only because of SRK but because of pure entertainment.
Jai ho was a slap on Salman’s face but then he has a backup plan to release films in Eid to guarantee good earnings. big loser.
Lets wait for the Worldwide collections which will be out very soon.

Happy New Year was the year’s most anticipated film. With an ensemble star cast and of course being Shah Rukh Khan’s Diwali release, there were high expectations from it. In terms of business, even though the film has made it to the 200 crore club domestically, the performance has been much lower than expected. A Koimoi reader tells us what worked for Happy New Year in terms of marketing but why the film could not perform that well.
It was a new way of promoting the movie by going every corners of the country and almost covering the globe. It was the producer who played the lead role who took the initiative and the strategy was a novel one to make sure the audience irrespective of his fans or not were made aware of the release of a big budgeted movie in terms of production as well as promotion costs. The trick worked very well on the first release day by collecting a mammoth total around 44 crores that not even any Bollywood movie had ever thought about.
Now, the movie on its 20th day after the release is standing at a total domestic collection of 200.50 crores. If we are deducting the first day, it could only gather around 156 crores in 18 days. Movies like 3 Idiots, Kick, Chennai Express, Krrish 3and the reigning topper Dhoom 3were able to collect much better collections, among which only3 Idiotscan only claim a well-crafted script and story.
So it clearly says that the movie was disappointing to the viewers and also to the distributor (YRF) which they have to compensate with the movies like Kill Dilwhich is releasing on November 2014. The producer stays happy as he got the ROI before the release itself. So he can celebrate the New Year happily.
Coming to the roles of other actors like Boman, Sonu, Abhishek, Vivaan, Deepika, and the director. Rather than acting or directing, their main role was like sales executives of the company trying to impress a customer to buy their product. They proved to be good at their jobs and it was only the product which made the customer dissatisfied. They might have also travelled more for promotion and spend more time compared with the actual shooting schedule. Hope they have compensated well also.
As a suggestion to the producer, who is one of the top actor in India, in terms of the fan following around the globe, he could make some good movies which can be commercially successful likeKal Ho Na Ho,Veer Zaaraetc which has the caliber to collect more than 300 crores in the present circumstances and can take the industry to a higher level which we all are expecting from him

If there is any comparision let us compare the collections of 3 idiots and HNY in a sector – China, where we have true international audience, and not NRIs.

Most of you guys think that international or global collections means movie did business with international audiences. That’s absolutely not true. What it means is that majority of its business came from sectors that have NRIs and not purely international audiences.
srk went for a world tour in places where they have more Indian crowds as he has a good reputation among majority of the NRIs.
Still HNY could not collect similar to D3, which only means that his popularity is on the wane in this sector too.
NRIs also doesn’t mean people who only love class movies. That is again a misconception.
Majority of NRIs love Indian films that are family based and cliched romantic types. They don’t go for action movies, as they connect more of action to Hollywood rather than bollywood.
Here is where Kjo scored the brownie points with these audience using srk for all that kind of movies that mixed romance and family values.
Kjo is not currently working with srk, reason is that he knows the saturation point has passed for those movies with these NRIs, who are now looking for different kind of Movies.
This has led to movies of Aamir being more appreciated overseas than others, and Kjo is signing Aamir to tap these markets and signing Salman to appease the Indian market.
Oh yes. Our king finally took the revenge to salman. Salman broke our king’s last year’s ATBB chennai express record by a very small margin of 5 crores difference so, our king took the revenge and broke salman’s 2 years old ek tha tiger’s record by even smaller margin than that of just 1 or 2 crores difference. We are very proud of our king.
It is very shocking that south copy kick collected more than an original happy new year. It is again proved that not content, peoples choice is the king. kick has zero content wheres hny has a strong content. but what can we do when people choose a wrong film like dhoom3, kick over right film like hny.

Guys pls dont just make fake facts. Though HNY was 5000 screens, the shows were less or equal to kick as HNY had long running time. Also kick had better reviews than HNY. Considering that HNY has done a lot better. See the fate of JAI HO which had 3900 screens. A Die hard Aamir fan but facts are facts. Had HNY got a good plot and reviews, Kick would have been history by far distance
