Shahrukh Khan’s Happy New Year has fallen short of the lifetime collections of Salman Khan’s Kick, which remains the highest grosser in India this year. While Happy New Year was expected to beat Kick after a record-breaking opening day of Rs 44.97 cr, the film failed to show enough growth on its first Sunday and the drop on Monday meant that the Farah Khan film was always going to find it difficult to cross the 233 crore business of Kick.
In hindsight, the battle for the top grosser of the year could have been a lot closer if Shahrukh Khan had decided to release his film on the Diwali holiday (23rd October). The film lost out on business in the South and other parts of India which do well even on Diwali puja day because of holidays. Last year, Krrish 3 released 3 days before Diwali and still managed to set a record on the day after Diwali – which is considered to be the best day for business. The Post-Diwali holiday collections would have probably been a little lower than Rs 44.97 crore, but the previous day business could have been anywhere between 20-25 cr, which isn’t a bad start considering Diwali pooja.
While Diwali is still a great period to release films, Eid and Christmas weekends are probably better for film business as films tend to sustain better after a good opening.
Overall, the Kick vs Happy New Year comparison once again proves that star-power is judged based on the opening that a film gets. After the initial hype subsides, the content completely takes over. Kick found more appreciation amongst the masses, which is the reason why it sustained well even after a good opening week. In fact, the second week business makes it obvious – Happy New Year collected Rs 35.87 crore with 3 holidays (including Sunday), whereas Kick collected Rs 51.01 crore with just one holiday on Sunday – a difference of Rs 15.14 crore in week 2! Pretty much sums it up, doesn’t it?

For me diwali is the best period for a film to release….people have a mentality of spending money during diwali season…there are always multiple holidays like bhai dooj, govardhan pooja, gurunanak’s bday and sometimes muharram as well as was the case this time…..there could be some other holidays around the diwali season as well….
plus not to forget diwali comes with the best weather of the year……….with eid there could be heavy rains sometimes and with christmas north india is really cold and foggy…..historically christmas was never a good weekend to release a film….things have changed in the multiplex era but still the weather is extreme in north india which is a big contributor for hindi films……….people who travel on two/three wheelers or who come in hordes using public transport in north india will definitely stay away for evening/night shows
as far as films sustaining is concerned, its obviously to do with content and also when the big holiday is coming…..with kick, eid came after 5 days or do…..with dhoom 3 christmas came after 5 days….so that helps…..as with the top stars , the first weekend will be huge even if its working as was seen with dhoom 3……..releasing the film on 20th dec was a master stroke by aditya chopra and aamir!
but yes it can safely be concluded that dhoom 3 and kick were better films that HNY ……and hence have better trending

Obviously Kick is a straight winner and that’s not because of the star power of Salman or SRK. As indicine stated earlier, star power can pull the audiences to the theatre on the opening day and opening weekend, but lifetime depends upon the content and the runtime of movie. Though HNY was nowhere less than Kick in terms of entertainment but its runtime completely ruined the movie and made it a bit boring. 3 hrs runtime is just unbearable in todays era that too with a less compact storyline.

Kick is a winner here. I just watched HNY again and I didn’t find it spectacular. No doubt that if the content was better and the runtime was shorter, HNY would have crushed Kick and Krrish:3 quite easily. SRK made an incredible comeback last year. With one movie, SRK accomplished what Salman failed to do with five. There is no question about starpower here, SRK just needed to maintain his streak of good movies.
And there is no point in criticizing SRK, the movie still managed to cross 200cr, SRK still created a few records. HNY is an underperformance in terms of expectations. It all boils down to stature, a King is always expected to deliver the best and break every record (which can’t always happen), whilst, Salman is only expected to do good, he hasn’t ever had the highest grosser (not even domestically) in the past few glory years. Kick was an underperformance itself, couldn’t even manage to beat the worldwide collections of 3 idiots. Let’s not even mention Jai Ho.
