Shahrukh Khan’s Happy New Year has fallen short of the lifetime collections of Salman Khan’s Kick, which remains the highest grosser in India this year. While Happy New Year was expected to beat Kick after a record-breaking opening day of Rs 44.97 cr, the film failed to show enough growth on its first Sunday and the drop on Monday meant that the Farah Khan film was always going to find it difficult to cross the 233 crore business of Kick.
In hindsight, the battle for the top grosser of the year could have been a lot closer if Shahrukh Khan had decided to release his film on the Diwali holiday (23rd October). The film lost out on business in the South and other parts of India which do well even on Diwali puja day because of holidays. Last year, Krrish 3 released 3 days before Diwali and still managed to set a record on the day after Diwali – which is considered to be the best day for business. The Post-Diwali holiday collections would have probably been a little lower than Rs 44.97 crore, but the previous day business could have been anywhere between 20-25 cr, which isn’t a bad start considering Diwali pooja.
While Diwali is still a great period to release films, Eid and Christmas weekends are probably better for film business as films tend to sustain better after a good opening.
Overall, the Kick vs Happy New Year comparison once again proves that star-power is judged based on the opening that a film gets. After the initial hype subsides, the content completely takes over. Kick found more appreciation amongst the masses, which is the reason why it sustained well even after a good opening week. In fact, the second week business makes it obvious – Happy New Year collected Rs 35.87 crore with 3 holidays (including Sunday), whereas Kick collected Rs 51.01 crore with just one holiday on Sunday – a difference of Rs 15.14 crore in week 2! Pretty much sums it up, doesn’t it?

Salman and Amir fans relax. Did anyone really except a Farah Khan movie to make 300 crores. Seriously anyone that thought that is deluded after he disaster of tees mar Khan. All the negativity HNY got it done excellent business. And all you saying it under performed, well it has beaten Kicks worldwide collection. So it has officially made more then Kick. Just because Kick made more in India don’t mean it made more money then HNY overall. Think by making 200+ crores in India HNY over achieved as a Farah Khan film thanks to SRKs stardom.
Thing is Indians watch any trash movies. And love Salman as he acts stupid just like they are. Films like ready, bodyguard, ek tha tiger and kick are crap but still they love such crap.
HNY is crap too and that too directed by one of the crappest directors but still it beated Kicks worldwide collection.
Salmans masala movies no matter how crap they are get good reviews everywhere so more people go watch it but SRK 2 masala movies he’sade everyone just spread negativity as they don’t like SRK but still they done well a 44 crore opening was something unheard of and shattered previous opening day record by a distance that’s only due to SRK. Everyone that saying that it was to do with Abisheks acting, well did anyone know how Abisheks acting will be before it even released. So due to SRK stardom it had a record opening. Also see how Abishek who has always been critised for his acting and as soon as he has to be all stupid and act all dumb which anyone can do he gets hailed as a great actor by everyone in India. salman is basically living of movies that are hits down south, kick was a huge hit in telugu, infact his come back movie “wanted” was a remake of a bb telugu movie “pokiri”…every movie that is a bb in south either salman or akshay or ajay remakes that movie…it is only srk that is making original(crappy) movies…he should learn to play to his strengths…he is a good actor and if he learns to make movies which are a second time watch he can definitely cross the 300 crore domestic mark…he should make movies which has a little bit more substance than stupid goofy comedy…
