We have received several mails in the last few days, asking if Shahrukh Khan’s My Name Is Khan is a FLOP in India. The mere fact that, even with a 45- 48 crore opening in India, the film is being called a “flop” by a few, shows the high-expectations that people have from a SRK release.
Back to the question, the answer is NO. Here is why
- The opening of the film is better than all films ever released, except Ghajini and 3 Idiots. If MNIK had released a couple of years ago, the opening would be considered great, if not record-breaking. But the bar has been set so high by a certain Aamir Khan that, even a 45 crore nett week pales in comparison to the unbelievably high figures of Aamir’s last two releases.
- Since Fox Studios has acquired the worldwide rights of the film, an India-only verdict by the distributors is unlikely. And as we all know by now, overseas the film has smashed all records.
- Even with a huge crash in week 2, MNIK is expected to finish with around 65 crores. While this could be termed ‘very disappointing’ – as the film was expected to easily beat Om Shanti Om and Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi – it certainly cannot be written off as a Flop.
So as things stand at the moment, worst case scenario would be ‘Above Average’ in India. Add overseas to it and the film is easily a HIT – Superhit.

it should flop ideally ..cos it is a mish mash of rainman and forrest gump.. and as such should flop ..the word of mouth publicity is adverse and the repeat value isnt there except for hard core srk fans …the acting also isnt that great..
But I thought that u were the guys who were declaring or very keen on declaring kambhaqt Ishq a flop when it collected more then 40 crores in the 1st week. what do u guys have to say about that????

Kambhakkt Ishq only grossed 19.5 crore LIFETIME overseas. It was an AVERAGE grosser overseas, not a hit, add that to its india total and it IS a flop.
By comparison MNIK has got roughly 50 crore in only 10 days of release. A vast differece, almost 2.5 times as much, given that MNIK has grossed more then KI in its first week in India aswell, it will be a hit. Like Indicine said if you break this down, In India, MNIK is likely to be above average. In overseas, it is likely to be a blockbuster/all time blockbuster, add these togther and you end up with hit/superhit.
Well, don’t think we ever called Kambakht Ishq a flop. It recovered its investment in India overall, although a few distributors lost money – Average.
Quite a few may not like this, but the reason we feel SRK and Hrithik are in a different league is because each of their films are considered not-so-successful if they don’t make 75 crores+ at the Indian box office. Not mentioned Aamir here, because he is incomparable at the moment.

Frankly speaking, for Kambakht Ishq, much like My Name Is Khan, each source has different figures. Actual box office figures is still a mystery.

I couldn’t agree more. I am not Akshays biggest fan, but I applaud him that for the last couple of years he is delivering 4 films a year. Again this year he has 4- 5 films. (Most of them look good).
SRK appeared in a film (If you want to exclude BILLU and DMG) after 18 months or so. Hrithink’s next film (If you want to exclude LBC) is again after 15 months or so. Ive loved Amir since AAA days. Yes Salman is my favourite but I also like Amir. He makes one film a year. Prior to 3 Idiots, LD and PKTDK were my fvourite films. They still are but 3 Idiots is also up there for me. Great film.
So, Salman still a mega mega star, has lost his following with multiplexes. Fair enough. Am convinced his upcoming films will fare well at multiplexes, because they will rock at single screens. Me being from overseas, I’ve realised that many Salman fans have stopped watching his films in the theatres. They just purchase it from the video shop four five days later. The reason for this is that his own fans don’t associate good films with Salman, which is unfortunate because he was excellent in LD in particular. For me he is an inspiration, says it how it is and my aim is to have a body like him. LOL. On the other hand people over here, England will watch a Amir and SRK film, irrespective of being there fan or not.
Salman really needs to stop appearing in ‘bad’ films. MAMK in particular. I still watched it first show but I wasn’t happy. I want to watch a film where Salman is the main lead, not Sohail.
I went to watch MNIK the day it came out, Thursday. Whilst I was watching it I was loving it especially ‘Rizwan Khan’. The problem for me was that it dragged in the second half and it holds no repeat value whatsoever. I personally don’t care how it fares but considering the hype, costs etc it did not meet my expectations.
Also, I want to see SRK and Hrithik moving out of there ‘comfort zone’. SRK attemted that in MNIK, suceeded for me. But for me he needs to make films with other directors/producers. Hrithik makes most of his films with his father, those that are successful anyway. Am happy about GUZAARISH. Not too keen on KITES.
Lastly, what makes me love Salman. Apart from one or two good songs, not the biggest actress, first time director in Bollywood. He single handedly made WANTED a big film. The film was a standard film of the 80’s and 90’s but Salman made it into something which is thoroughly enjoyable. Thats what makes me like Salman as much as I do.
@ Indicine….U declared KI a flop…I donno Y…even at the time when KI was the biggest opening movie Ghajini (later on 3I,LAK and MNIK surpassed it but u vr the fist one to declare KI a flop…I donno wot problem you have with AKKI….as per me Akshay & Salmaan r the biggest stars of Bolliwood…they have biggest fan folowing….
about MNIK i donno how it will fare at box office but surely…It a Sad and Boring movie and really it does not have any enterainment…I wud say it is the most overated movie i ever saw…..

one thing i wanted to ask;; when srk says we should not see for place for namaz its from heart ( niyyath) ok i agree with that but one thing from sartting there is nothing shown of namaz even once atleast but suddenly in restaurant he remembers to do namaz and once in jail that too with wearing shorts below knee length which is haraam .. while prying namaz dress should be below knee lenght

but the film is good and it will never going to be said as flop ….it wil be below average or average or above average in some territories like veer till yet verdict and will easily get blockbuster or hit staus in others territories in india and overseas as i say like veer

I feel mnik wil most certainly b a hit.Even if u go by BOI’s claim that it made 45 crore net, which are actually third highest collections after ghajini and 3 idiots.
My prediction for the next week would b 20 crores as the advance booking is pretty good and its holding very strong in high end multiplexes.Moreover there’s no real competition in this week frm other films..
3rd week wud b a issue though..with kck and teen patti releasing,collections wud fall drastically and movie could end up collctin mere 5-8 crore..
I think MNIK WIL END UP AT 70-75 Crores in india..in the overseas market it has already thrashed every other record set by othr films..As far as I see it wud easily beat overall run f 3idiots which made 75 crore overseas..moreover Fox r planning to release mnik in other international centres by next month which can easily fetch them 10-15 crores..
Ultimately my prediction on film’s fate-
India 75 crores and overseas 100 crore in its entire run..so it wud com to 175 crores…so mnik at its worst wud also be a hit…:-)

i went yesterday to watch this movie with my frnds…multiplex was half empty in evevning show..and after interval me and my frnds left the multiplex and went back to home..

being a college goer i dont recommend this kind of movie..
we want to spend money where we get entertainment..dats d reason v like Akshay kumar’s movie…no story,no script but still fully entertainment…
