Initial MNIK Reviews

The initial reviews of My Name Is Khan from those who managed to watch it, is out. The film has been loved by folks from the industry, most critics weren’t invited to the premiere.

Here are some of the initial reactions

Farhan Akhtar (director): MNIK is an amazing film. Full power to Karan, Shahrukh, Kajol, Ravi K Chandran (DOP), Deepa Bhatia (editor) and the rest! Outstanding! – Shahrukh’s best performance till date. Karan’s best film. What else can you ask for? –  Kajol is very good as always, reached in and plucked my heart out in some moments…. but SRK blows you away. MUST WATCH!

Preity Zinta : Jut saw My Name Is Khan and it is MINDBLOWING ! Everyone who has a heart should watch it .. Again and Again and Again ! Am so proud of SRK ! – Karan Johar has shown his superiority as a director ! I am so proud of him ! My name is Zinta and I have loved the film – Kajol is also amazing in the film ! Its SRK’s role that is really tough though and he deserves a standing ovation :-)

Sonam Kapoor : Saw mnik, loved the purity of khan and the intentions of the film. its a tear jerker with a message of love and hope. Power to kjo!

Arjun Rampal : A brave and powerful film. Proud of them (Karan, SRK and MNIK team).

Any negatives reviews, you may ask. Yes, there is one from Sagarika Ghose- a popular CNN IBN journalist and wife of one of India’s most respected journalist Rajdeep Sardesai. Here is what she had to say about the film on twitter.

  • Just came back from special screening of MINK–after all the hype, sorry the movie just didn’t work for me.
  • Love shahrukh, total solidarity on ss, but his performance in MINK fell badly short, made autism look comical, as if he was sending it up.
  • Why could the same film not have been set in India: muslim-as-terrorist dilemma equally potent here..MINK totally american film
  • MNIK too contrived, not real, tackily made ..Three Idiots far far better
  • On Kajol : she bounced around perkily and wept well, but not a big deal. am afraid..
  • I love shahrukh, think he has great energy and is very good looking, but his acting in MNIK is most disappointing..
  • In my view a movie entitled MNIK should be raw, gut wrenching, in your face–this was neither here nor there..

  • farhan, prety .arjun all are da close frnd of srk and thats why they acclaim this movie!!! but critics did not like this movie. MNIK is most likely going to VEER row…. good luck srk hope people will love this movie!!!!!!

  • Expect my review on thursday, will be watching after Uni.

As for the review by Rajdeep Saredesai’s wifes review…..hmmmmmm!

I had a feeling that the film would be received with a mixed responseso im fully expecting quite a few negative reviews, but I have a few issues about her review:
Why compare it to 3 idiots? Two films based on different subject, its almost as if she playing on the Aamir-SRK rivalry, which both try to downplay, but the media hypes. If shes Rajdeeps (Who is hand in hand with SRK) wife, then why is she trying to create a rift? Even the director stated that it was near enough impossible to reach the level of 3 idiots.
From the looks of it, she seems to hold a grudge over why it is set in America, maybe because 9/11 happened in America and it is the heart of Islamic unawareness.
Also being a psychologist myself (bsc in Psychology). One of the defining features of Autism is that they appear comical, they lack emotion and therefore are funny to observe, so i dont get where she is coming from!!!!
I agree with her over Kajol though, she looks like a wreck in the trailers.
I also agree with the tackily made part even without watching, Karan Johar is the director! nuff said.

Anywayz, will closely look at the Autism side of the film when i watch it. Expect an honest review from me , so long as the film doesnt star Hritik Roshan!

  • Here are a few videos on Aspergers Syndrome, i think people need to be fully aware of what it is before they can comment on someones portrayal of it. child (ideally watch this, as Rizvan Khan is an adult, note the long sentences and the almost comical expressions)

(Just like to add that Aspergers symptoms become more apparent as the child gets older)

  • Watch Indicine, as all the SRK detractors/Salman lovers on this site will use just 1 negative review (as of yet) to suggest that My Name is Khan is going to be the biggest flop ever.

Im waiting for the comments to begin!!!!:D:D:D:D, should be fun to see people write off a film based on 1 review….even before its released.

And the aged old, formula, Rampal, Zinta, Farhan are all srks friends. Well you know they are allowed opinions you know!!!!

  • Would just like to add for SRK fanatics (Fathiya most likely)
that Sagarika Ghose is not a film critic and neither are those film personalities, so i would take all of these guys opinions with a pinch of salt (yes Fathiya even the positive ones).

  • Sagarika Ghose is journalist not a critcs. so wait for citics openion. ithink critics will give mostly between 2+1/5 to 4 star but not more than 4 star.
hope movie will not get any negative reviews.

  • Well,

negative critic luk like serious and honest one, i don’t go ffor critics like Taran adarsh blah blha blah cos they are professionals and they work for money……. the journalist gave fair and honest critic ere… so… luk like MNIK is ordinary film….

  • Hey guys have u watched the movie “Rain man”…there was a austic charecter was played by Dustin hoffman..

Watchin the initial promo it seems to me that SRK’s acting is inspired by the legendery act of Dustin…

  • taran adarsh gave this film 4 and a half stars…..he also gave 3 idiots the same rating….can’t wait for other reviewers….

  • Hey guys have u watched the movie “Rain man”…there was a austic charecter was played by Dustin hoffman..

Watchin the initial promo it seems to me that SRK’s acting is quite simmilar to
    the legendery act of Dustin…

  • taran has already given his review and its 4 1/2 stars

but i will believe only in Indicines Review please post it ASAP

  • Shamry
i never like indicine review coz they gave 3 stars to 3 idiots.
ever critics needs to give review according to audiances point of view not own..
thts why i love taran adrsh , he always give the review according to audience point of view. he is god of all critics.
i like the review of mnik by taran
    wait for other critics review.

  • BTW,indicine remember that u gave 3 stars to 3 idiots for high i m expecting an honest review from u………:)

  • Sagarika is dead right!!! So what if she is not a film critic – in fact, she is totally unbiased and that is why her review tells the truth unlike what we can expect from lobbyists like Anupama Chopra of NDTV, Kaveree Bamzai of India Today/Headlines Today etc. Even in the trailer, Shah Rukh head nodding autist looks silly. As for the so-called Kajol-SRK chemistry, let us assure you that the public is not dying to see them after a gap of 15 years despite the false Chopra/Johar hype. Even sillier is the obsession with Umrika!!!! Look at those whose comments you have carried – Javed Akhtar, Preity Zinta and Arjun Rampal. All these fellows are known SRK groupies, and chamchas of the Chopra/Johar/SRK camp. Let us also tell you that the whole controversy about Pak players was an engineered stunt by SRK/Johar to ensure a good opening. One other thing – there is a new trend to talk about overseas collections especially when a film flopa at home. This is totally misleading – the overseas market for Indian films is very very small. Moreover, it is not the goras but NRIs who see such films. But for Johars and Chopras it is a clever ploy for deflecting attention if the film is a flop in India which continues to be the biggest market for Hindi films. You will also see these same felows planting a news in the press soon about how the film’s script has entered the Hollywood film archives – which Hollywood do they talk about??? And for God’s sake stop calling SRK King Khan – he is not and this IS the biggest self-proclaimed lie ever perpetrated. Luckily, you cannot fool all the people all the time!!

  • this film is not going to create any BB
it is story mixed of new york and Kurbaan if both film did not do big collection how it will do in this film
one option ,,all the credit will goes to Kajol not for sharukh
dont sounds to be big hit

  • Indicine Team
dont be partiality i know ur rating this movie upto 4/5 or 4.5/5
this will not be fair as u rated for brilliant movie 3I only 3
    what do u say

  • Adiii if u never like indicine y are u here then please go out and y did he give 1 1/2 star to veer y didnt he give it according to audience point of view

  • but whatever the reviews r,it will open may surpass 3i weekend minimum it will be hit in india n superhit in overseas.but can’t go close to 3i collection for sure.let’s see….:)

  • Movie Review: My Name is Khan

    By Taran Adarsh, February 8, 2010 – 10:52 IST

MY NAME IS KHAN makes two strong statements…

The first: B.C. and A.D. are designations used to label years in the Julian and Gregorian calendars. There’s a third designation now – 9/11. Post September 11, the world stands divided. Terrorist outfits continue to strike in the name of religion and the common man, not even remotely associated with these groups, is bearing the brunt. The world is not a safe place anymore.

The second statement: There’re two sets of people in this world – the good and the bad. No matter how strong the evil forces are, good always triumphs.

Write your own movie review of My Name Is Khan
MY NAME IS KHAN mirrors the era we live in. Not a day goes by when you haven’t heard/read/watched news of terror attacks and innocents being killed. We live in turbulent times. Also, the movie states – and states very strongly, without mincing words – Not all Muslims are terrorists.

Karan Johar’s cinema got more real from KABHI ALVIDA NAA KEHNA onwards. In MY NAME IS KHAN, the storyteller attempts to make a social statement and succeeds completely. At the same time, it takes no sides. If the protagonist says ‘My name is Khan and I am not a terrorist’, it also exposes those who misadvise the youth with inflammatory and rabble-rousing speeches.

Karan’s take on the issue deserves the highest praise, since a subject like this is difficult to attempt. Final word? MY NAME IS KHAN is Karan, SRK and Kajol’s best outing to date. Do I need to add anything more?

Rizvan Khan [Shah Rukh Khan moves to San Francisco and lives with his brother [Jimmy Shergill] and sister-in-law [Sonya Jehan]. Rizvan, who has Asperger’s syndrome, falls in love with Mandira [Kajol]. Despite protests from his brother, they get married and start a small business together. They are happy until September 11, when attitudes towards Muslims undergo a sea-change.

When tragedy strikes, Mandira is devastated and they split. Rizvan is confused and upset that the love of his life has left him. To win her back, he embarks on a touching and inspiring journey across America.

Let me alert you. The story unfolds feverishly from the very start itself. So if you miss a scene or two, chances are you would’ve missed some vital links in the story. The fact is, there’s too much happening in the first half. Although the narrative tends to get leisurely-paced at times, the wheels continue to move from one episode to another.

A number of sequences are endearing. For instance, the romance between SRK and Kajol is subtle, yet charming. But it’s SRK’s relationship with Kajol and their kid that’s one of the best parts of the movie. Your heart bleeds when an accident occurs and their lives are torn apart. Kajol’s outburst – first, when her son meets with a catastrophe and second, when she confronts SRK – are truly shattering.

MY NAME IS KHAN’s strength lies in the fact that you root for Khan all through. At the same time, you are weighed down when he’s in a vulnerable situation, especially when he’s labelled a terrorist and thrown behind bars. You don’t realize it, but the fact is that you, as a spectator, have already got entwined in Rizvan and Mandira’s lives.

There’s a slight hitch in the second hour, when SRK returns to Georgia to save a hurricane-ravaged hamlet. Also, the media exercise tends to add to the length of the film. Nonetheless, it’s a minor hiccup that doesn’t rob the film of its punch.

There’s just one word to illustrate Karan’s direction – exemplary. One of the finest storytellers of our generation, he deserves brownie points for deviating from ‘Karan Johar brand of cinema’ and attempting a film that knocks on your heart and stimulates your mind. With MY NAME IS KHAN, Karan takes rapid strides as a storyteller.

Shibani Bathija’s screenplay is truly arresting. Shibani and Niranjan Iyengar’s dialogues are noteworthy and many a times, applaud-worthy. Ravi K. Chandran’s cinematography is awe-inspiring. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy’s music gels well with the nature of the film.

When a film stars two of the finest talents of the country, you expect nothing but the best. SRK, well, how does one describe his performance? To state that this is his best work so far would be cutting short the praise he truly deserves. In fact, no amount of praise can do sufficient justice to his portrayal of Rizvan Khan, who has Asperger’s syndrome. His latest work is several notches above anything he has done before. The only compliment that I can think of is, SRK has a new screen-name now. Raj is passe, Rizvan it is.

Kajol is pure dynamite and casting her for this character was the most appropriate decision. No other actress could’ve matched SRK in histrionics the way Kajol has. In fact, SRK and Kajol compliment each other wonderfully well and this film only proves it yet again. It’s a powerhouse performance from this supremely talented actress.

The film boasts of a number of capable actors, but the ones who leave a rock-solid impact are – in this order – Zarina Wahab, Sonya Jehan, Jimmy Shergill, Arjun Mathur, Parvin Dabas and Arif Zakaria. Sugandha Garg is confident. Navneet Nishan supports well. Vinay Pathak leaves a mark in a brief role. Tanay Chheda [young SRK] and Yuvaan Makaar [SRK and Kajol’s son Sameer] are excellent. The American actors, especially the kid who plays Sameer’s friend, deserves mention.

On the whole, MY NAME IS KHAN is a fascinating love story, has an angle of religion and a world-shaking incident as a backdrop. It not only entertains, but also mesmerises, enthrals and captivates the viewer in those 2.40 hours. At the same time, a film like MY NAME IS KHAN is sure to have a far-reaching influence due to its noble theme. I strongly advocate, don’t miss this one!
