Shah Rukh Khan’s FAN has flopped at the domestic box office, as the film has dropped by 5% on a holiday for ‘Mahavir Jayanti’. It was clear from the trend over the first weekend itself, that the drop over the weekdays was inevitable. But there was hope that FAN would sustain to reasonably good levels on Monday and then show decent growth on Tuesday (partial holiday). Both of those expectations weren’t met and the film crashed both on Monday and Tuesday.
The first week business of FAN will be around 72 crore, which will be poor for a film starring a major superstar like Shah Rukh Khan. More so when it was given a big release of 3500 screens. The film could finish with lifetime business of around 85 crore, which will make it the lowest grossing SRK film since My Name Is Khan in 2010.
The overseas box office too isn’t sustaining as well as it was expected to. A few countries like Pakistan and UAE are holding up well, but others have shown bigger than expected drops.
Overall, FAN has disappointed at the box office because the film was expected to perform at multiplexes. It was never a film that was meant to do well in the heartland of India, like Shah Rukh himself said, but even he would agree that it’s the target audience (read moviegoers at multiplexes at Urban centres) who have rejected the film Saturday evening onwards.

Wow Indicine great you reply so fast to @Piyush even he didn’t ask you anything but you correct him immediately why because that comment was showing Salman and Amir above Srk (Budget point of view), I know he is wrong and what you are saying is true, but here there is no need to reply because so many times Srk fans project wrong fig too but you never correct them.

As per KRK YRF is the factory of flop films since maha crap dhoom3(2013) all YRF film floped at boxoffice not only in domestic but also in oversease too because people lost trust in YRF like before was. Last 3year YRF failed to earn profit then decided to cast srk n salman next project, so called big banner YRF yet to give 100cr without khans where Young actor with other banners gave many time. Even YRF failed to profit with SRK now 1big film sultan left with salman, YRF bad luck continues if SRK decide to clash Raees with Sultan then YRF was made and destroyed by SRK and Finally what KRK said YRF me sirf star bhikte hai a66i kahani/film nehi.
@Indicine – I agree with a previous comment, it’s way too premature to declare this movie a flop. Based on what criteria is it a flop..? You say it hasn’t recovered 50% of it’s budget and how did you come up with that conclusion when it hasn’t even ended it’s run at the cinemas yet..? jumping the gun a little too fast don’t you think. Typical though. You’re articles about Fan’s box office performance have been negatively worded and themed from day one.
@Wazza, our reports need to reflect exactly how the film is performing at the box office. We cannot be more lenient just because a film stars Shah Rukh Khan. There is nothing personal here. To recover 50% from domestic, the film has to do 100-110 crore of business, which is impossible now. A lot of people don’t understand that out of the collections, the producers / distributors only get about 50%. The rest goes to the exhibitors (theatre owners).
So if the budget is 105 crore, a film has to do around 200-220 crore to recover 100% from domestic business. Of course, this doesn’t include overseas share etc.
Indicine please make an article on collection of A list stars in non holiday releases.

Very good@ indicine. I like this bold and factual side of indicine. Say it like it is FAN is a half baked film out together in the name of doing something different and the so called srk acting comes across as desperate and overrated. It deserves to flop!
The last time he delivered a flop (Paheli) was way back in June 2005 i.e. around 11 years back. Such a long period that I had stop imagining a flop will ever be again written in front of any of his movie. So due credit goes to him for that consistency.
But all that will look past to many people and he will be put to pressure to deliver a biggie. Thats what box office pressures do. Even a living legend (and I consider the other 2 Khans as living legends too) has to bear that pressure and naturally thats the cost u have to pay if u want to remain in the top 3.
I know he will be feeling quite low since he put so much efforts in this movie and after quite a long time a movie of bis will be scoring below 100cr. But he is a tough character and have full faith in him that he will bounce back with Raees.
Was quite disturbed for a few days due to this movies underperformance. But feeling relaxed now. May be coz realised that he is a human after all and such highs and lows remain part of life. There was a time when he was at top and now (a bit) down and so will go on.
Waiting for Raees and Anand Rai movie.

@Damn, never in a hurry. We call a film only after we are 100% convinced about its trend. We are completing 10 years, where is the question of shutting it down?
The film might have been better accepted if another actor had played the protagonist or antagonist, rather than have SRK play both roles. It gets rather boring when one actor is playing both roles.
Fan proves that only malayalam and tamil industry can make good films make it big hits.. (Big example : Dhrishyam (Orginal dhrishyam was all time blockbuster in malayalam industry). Traffic, udayananu tharam (Short cut- hindi), Manichithrathaazhu ( bhool bhulayya ) etc…..

One of the worst days of my life.
First Flop from my superstar after a decade which is more than a shock and nightmare for me.
On the other hand, I came across the sad demise of one of my close relative.
Worst day. Not liking anything around me.
May be I need a break from indicine and social media before I recover myself from this trauma.
I had not imagined FAN to be a “Flop” even in my worst nightmare. :-(
