Dilwale Hit or Flop: Box Office Prediction

Shah Rukh Khan returns a year and two months after Happy New Year, with one of the biggest films of his career. Dilwale has a hugely popular star cast, immensely successful director in Rohit Shetty and the film has been made on a lavish budget.

More often than not, a commercial mass entertainer like Dilwale starring a superstar in the lead, guarantees a big grosser at the box office. But the release of Bajirao Mastani on the same day and the response that film gets, will eventually make a big difference to the lifetime collections of Dilwale.

The odds are in favour of Dilwale, because Bajirao Mastani would have to be a great film if it has to challenge the SRK starrer in the long run. The scenario was similar when Bhansali’s Saawariya released on the same day as Om Shanti Om. The fate of Saawariya was sealed on the first day itself and Om Shanti Om went on to be a box office blockbuster.

OSO wasn’t a great film, it was nothing more than a ‘timepass’ entertainer, but the advantage for films like Dilwale is that they don’t have to be extraordinary films to be successful. As long as the word-of-mouth is not negative, it’ll be advantage Dilwale.

Dilwale Business Economics

  • Total Costs: ? 145 crore (i.e Cost of Production ? 90 crore + Marketing ? 25 crore + producer Shah Rukh Khan’s acting fee assumed to be 30 crore)
  • Recovery from Satellite rights: ? 60 crore
  • Recovery from various other rights: ? 25 crore
  • Total recovery from non-theatrical: ? 85 crore
  • Total amount to be recover from theatrical revenue (India and Overseas): ? 60 crore

Since Shah Rukh Khan is the producer of Dilwale, the makers of the film have already recovered a huge chunk of their investment. It’ll be about delivering a big grosser, taking the lead against Bajirao Mastani and living upto trade expectations.

Advance Booking: The response has been terrific. Ticket sales for Day 1 is in the Rs 9-10 crore range, say trade sources. For the weekend, ticket sales have crossed the 15 crore mark.

Screen count: There isn’t too much clarity on the screen count yet, because theatres haven’t yet been completely finalised. Court cases, dispute over show ratio at multiplexes.. have also delayed and affected the advance booking. One of many reasons why two films should never clash on the same day. It was thought to be a good thing for the exhibitors, but looking at the hassles, even they would prefer solo releases for big films. A Bang Bang vs Haider isn’t a problem, but when two films that need 3000 plus screens each and have budgets of 100 crore plus, it’s a war for screens and getting the best shows at multiplexes. The expected screen count of Dilwale is around the 3000 – 3100 range.

IndicineFBO: We expect Dilwale to collect Rs 25.2 crore on its opening day at the box office. If the collections are in this range, it’ll be humongous for Dilwale because it would be achieving a number similar to Bang Bang (holiday) and Kick (solo release). We have got most FBO predictions right this year, fingers crossed for the last two films of the year.

  • @Indicine : That was rude !!!!!! Why are you behaving like this towards a visitor who has been loyal with you for so many years ? Where is your funda of non-sense comments goes while reading @sss @I am AKN @Romance comments ? It seems the writer of this particular comment is a SRK fanatic. I felt like a Fanatic Srkian replying to @Tiger. You will only lose the faith and credibility in long run if you go on this way, we may get 100s of sites for Bollywood news and you may get 1000s of visitors for your site but there is something called credibility and accountability which you often fails to show up and behave like a bias site. I am hoping for another rude comment from your side.

    • @Hrithik, you need to get over your own bias first. Would you have seen it as a rude reply, if the same reply was for a Shah Rukh fan? The very fact that we approved his comment and took the effort to write a detailed reply to him, shows that we value our readers. We could have easily deleted his comment and saved 10 minutes.

We have better things to do, that too during the release of two big films. And yes, we stick to what was said in the last comment. Please don’t visit and comment if you don’t believe our numbers, don’t like our analysis or feel we are biased.

  • Srk movie is a festival for srk fans. I m going to celebrate it tomorrow. God bless srk. Dilwale will be a blockbuster.

  • @hritik challege accepted Dilwale LT 300cr sure as reviews of the film positive or one word reviews not matter rohit shetty films and BM reviews are disappointing

  • OSO v/s Swariya clash 9th nov 2007 Dilwale v/s Bajirao Mastani clash 18th dec 2015 18=1+8=9 history repeated itself

  • @indicine:
For Salman you had added huge 60cr as acting fee (satellite right) and for srk only the fee is only 30cr!!! Why??? I also considerer srk a smaller star than Salman but the acting fee should be 50cr minimum for srk.

According to you, you are not at all biased. Fine, see this is your own prediction of Bajrangi Bhaijaan http://www.indicine.com/movies/bollywood/bajrangi-bhaijaan-hit-or-flop-box-office-prediction/.
According to your prediction Bajrangi Bhaijaan needed to collect over 250cr to become blockbuster. The budget was only 80-90cr. Salman himself was the producer hence no question for any acting fee…
But cost of Dilwale is little more than Bajrangi Bhaijaan (without srk acting fee). But according to you it needs to collect 230cr (20cr less than what you predicted for BB) to become blockbuster. Any explanation???

    ### hope you will post the comment..

    • @Tiger, that argument doesn’t make any sense either. Bajrangi Bhaijaan was sold to Eros International, they have to recover their investment. Even there Satellite was pre sold. And there is no acting fee for SRK, he is the producer himself. Salman kept satellite as his fee for PRDP, because he pre-sold it. So his fee and satellite recovery cancelled itself.

The difference between most SRK and Salman films is.. SRK is the producer and now he’s distributing too. If you get someone to just distribute, you have to pay commission – which was the case with Happy New Year. Now even that’s not there, the cost is with establishing the network, but that’s a long term investment, not film specific.

  • @indicine this site is only for srk fans bcz, u r promoting dilwale 1000 times a day but u haven’t promoted BB or PRDP, Today srk said that aamir and Salman r better than him but u have not posted that, today google announced their reports of most searched people and salman topped the charts that’s why u have not posted final u have not given review for Dilwale today bcz of negativity.

  • @Indicine……..collections…..film will be hit/flop will depend upon millions of viewers liking……not by your shitty SRK fans and your nonsense article……

Dilwale has SRK/Kajol/Varun ….it does not mean that each film like CE will be blockbuster(all holidays in a month/shitty Akshay movie OUATIM 2)……

Every time same old romance, stunts, cheap vulgar jokes……nowadays people like to watch sensible movies more rather than nonsense movies…….

may be four/five days collection will be huge…..but as everyone knows it’s only about great script after weekends……..

  • @hrithik:
    Thanks dude..

    @indicine:
We are not going to leave your site because we have to return the all investments of tax CHOR’s fans with interests they invested for Bajrangi Bhaijaan & PRDP. BTW, it seems you don’t want to see anyone bashing your favourite star…

  • @ Indicine – Before welcoming the big tomorrow, could you please tell us the advance booking response of Dilwale and BM both so far?? if Dilwale is leading then how big is the lead? Pls reply.

    • @Dabrat, no point talking about advance booking. BM didn’t even start at 50% screens where it’ll release and rest started late. Dilwale also was limited advance, but response has been excellent. Lead is quite big, at small centres, huge.

  • @Indicine : As expected and predicted the reply came. Thanks !!! People are watching everyone including how you respond to its users. Yes, I am bias if defending our Megastar and replying in same language as the haters understands then you are right !!!!

    @ Tiger : Anytime bro !!! :-)

  • @ Indicine Thanks !!! And let me tell you, you are doing a fantastic job…yours is the only website I visit on a daily basis. Its no secret I am a Shahrukh Khan Fan, and became a fan of your website in the process of checking BO updates!!

  • @indicine:
I have seen many regular users complaining on your posts/articles but never seen them to get advice from you to leave the site. You could have simply replied us (me & hrithik) as you always do rather advised us to leave the site..

  • BM would be a better film than Dilwale. Dilwale collection would be in a higher side due to SRK but overall BM would be a great film

  • @Indicine.. I am noone to advice you, but you should avoid arguing with these Salman fans.. No matter how well you explain, they are dumb.

You can see on Twitter or any other place.. they rule when it comes to filthy language and nonsensical comments.

  • Indicine team , I admire your professionalism, and I love your classy unbiased views without any tabloid tone. My honest request is to give us more details about economics and trade reports even if you consider it to be your secret.

I also hope you can avoid using aggressive tone when you replay to readers to keep your classy image. Keep the good works, I will always be fan .

    love from Saudi Arabia.

  • @Indicine im a reguler vister of u no matter i do comment or not but i really like ur site ur efforts Thankyou

  • Guyz @Tiger @ hrithik

  • And some idiots will say it cant match record of bb.pk etc…. Somebody tell them idiots …screen count is in 3000 range… Which was about 4500 in bb n pk case…. I dont how can sm1 be so idiotic hw is comparing these…… Come next ur buddies … When srk v/s sallu happen…. N got the result…. Till then. .. U can spread negativity tht all….

  • Watching Dilwale first show at AMC southfield, Michigan, USA, ticket price $22 only… :)

okay re bhai, bahot bekaar hongi movie, to kya karna???

Hum dekhte hi dekhte… Dilwale will be a block buster…

Jo review karna hai karle.. SRK rocks..

  • @Hrithik : That’s why I feel that you are the most double standard fanatic available on this website. If I remember, just couple of weeks back, indicine had quoted me with a link saying “Victim family don’t want Salman to be imprisoned, but they want financial help instead”. That was just a mere reply and you started dancing saying ” Indicine slapped me”. So I can imagine what would have been your reaction when indicine would have addressed that reply of chuha to me. So when indicine says, “Would you have seen it as a rude reply, if the same reply was for a Shah Rukh fan?”. They are perfectly right.
Hence, before giving big lecture on credibility etc, first see what’s your own credibility.

@Tiger – The real king (yes, I’ll pronounce it correctly as at this point of time, you need sympathy than anything else) : We all are having difference in opinions as we support different stars. At the same time, we don’t agree with indicine at times when we feel they are not reporting in the way we want. You have all the rights to register your disagreement, but questioning someone’s loyalty saying ” SRK has bought this site. They are biased etc” is childish.
So the response you got is a consequence of your contentious bogus rant. Still time is there, get well soon.

  • @Tiger : problem with you people is, you can’t bear anything related to SRK. When indicine used to publish multiple articles related to PRDP, you were enjoying but once they started publishing SRK related articles with Dilwale release. They suddenly became biased for you.
If you are so very interested in “Only Salman related” news, you can switch to those blogs run by his fans. Like SRKuniverse run a blog dedicated to SRK related news. In the same way, Salman and his fans too, would have some blog.
But if you are here at Bollywood news website, be open to accept the news related to other actors as well.

  • it will be a bluckcuster sanjaya leela and deepika does not know what the value of SRK kajol in bollywood , so they will know now

  • Srkians are crying badly every where, despite of bigger commercial director, varun dhawan (who is bigger than bm lead actor) , favourable genre.
With all these plus it is not difficult to give good opening.
But the main goal is Lifetime which is out of equation for srk in present and future.
